I should also thank Don for the same thing. I have had a lot of fun with the distros he sent me. On second thought maybe I shouldn't thank you so much Don. Those penguins in Mapis are going to get me into trouble if I don't stop playing with them. That and those tile games. I haven't played games on the computer for quite a few years now and here I am starting all over again. OY I'm lost! Finally suspected the 9 pin serial port might be bad, so I hooked the 9 pin plug from the ext serial modem to the 25 pin serial port using an adapter and it worked. This is being sent using PuppyLinux which is (to me) the simplest and easiest to understand of the distros. Now, if I can manage to save the modem settings using the ntfs file. The first attempt was not successful. Would also like to install PuppyLinux on this computer but haven't yet figured out how to do that. You are welcome. For the record, my distro of choice now for low-end machines (like my laptop) is PCFluxBoxOS. All the benefits of PCLinuxOS 2007 w/out the memory requirements. Screams on a low-end Pentium II w/ 160 mb RAM. Still like antiX (Mepis) but PCFlux is slightly more user friendly due to the incorporated Mandriva GUI scripts. http://www.pclinuxos.com/index.php?option=com_contenttask=viewid=37Itemid=89 On Feb 1, 2008 6:33 PM, MG [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I should also thank Don for the same thing. I used to use Linux on my main desktop machine, but sort of lost interest in keeping up with the distro scene when all the distributions started to try to ape Windows with their window managers, and added associated cruft like graphical configuration frontends and the like. The screenshots of TinyFlux remind me very much of the 100 MHz Pentium with 16 Mb of RAM that I used quite happily with the 2.x kernel and fvwm back in 1997. I'll have to try it on the Win98 box I have kicking around here---think it's a 233 MHz P3 with 256 Mb or so. Re: [MBZ] OT Success! Online with PuppyLinuxOS
My apologies to everyone thinking this should be on the Linux list -- I agree but wanted to answer on the list where the question was asked. TinyFlux is nice but is pretty bare bones. MidiFlux / PCFluxOS runs just as quickly but has more programs (and configs) preloaded. Try Midi and if things are slow then try Tiny. My laptop is a 266. If Tiny/Midi won't run on a P-100 then try Puppy ver. 3. Or antiX (Mepis 7.0 remaster). Apps to add: XMMS and Streamtuner, Opera. Easily grabbed via Synaptic. I've just loaded the Puppy linux, actually the Seamonkey 3.1 version which is running in RAM as I write this. Seems to be quite fast and found my wireless card and connected in secondsnice and easy(Not the haircolour) Could do with some tweaking but pretty good for 4 minutes worth of effort! Think I'll install it and add it to my Linux collection. Try the antix distro (fluxbox: right click on desktop to get menu). Guy who does the distro has spent lots of time on it -- and incorporating Streamtuner was my idea. :-) (I was a beta tester.) http://antix.mepis.org/index.php/Main_Page D. However, the difference between the distributions is really like cars with different options. Often it sounds like there are thousands of different models to choose from. But really there are only about half a dozen. Or less. The big differences tend to follow the lines draw by the package management tool. RPM, apt, emerge, or none. Beyond that, the difference is no greater than a 240D with/without power windows, or sunroof, or automatic transmission. -- Philip ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
