on that car it has 2 boxes, one is the blower control, the other is the acc
relay, they are both located behind the glove box.

2010-02-18 Thread Jim Cathey
The Porcupine is a resistor array changing voltage to the blower
motor, thus
changing speed. The controller box selects input to the various
resistors.

No, the porcupine is the heavily finned (with circular cross-section
heat-dissipation 'spines') blower speed regulator that lives in the
air plenum by the blower motor. It's solid-state, and is likely just
a power transistor or three. (I've never chiseled one open.) They
are found in the '86+ ACCII's, the ones with the large black AUTO
button and with non-discrete blower speed steps. There is no separate
speed controller box, they take an output directly from the PBU, which
also contains the brain. The porcupines are, sadly, not immune from
failure.

The controller box (full of relays) is associated with an old-style
box full of dropping resistors, usually on the fender or in the air
intake under the grille. It does the same job the manual switch used
to do, but under automatic control. It's separate from the PBU, and
from the cabin temperature regulator box. They are not failure-prone.

Have you the ACC with the little translucent AUTO switch, or
the big square AUTO switch? They're different. The former
(older) has three main components, plus a vacuum valve block.
Temperature regulator, blower speed regulator, and the pushbutton
array. The latter has the three parts integrated into the
pushbutton array. The problems lie 90% in the pushbutton
array, at least so I've seen.

To which you add all the vacuum pods, the monovalve, auxiliary
water pump and AC compressor, etc.

I would assume he means the servo? If so, dont have one. Best to get a
new metal one from Rusty, or go with the conversion kit.

on that car it has 2 boxes, one is the blower control, the other is the
acc relay, they are both located behind the glove box.

Re: [MBZ] Parts request for Kaleb or anyone else that has this

2010-02-17 Thread Dieselhead
Nope, it is the circulation system, that little bypass hose on older
engines (OM615/616/617, M180 etc.) that gets the first warm water to
your heater, rather than having to wait until the radiator is warm
and the thermostat opens.

The Aux heater pump only helps to circulate water to a heater that is
not substantially higher than the head of the engine. Older cars
like 110/111/112/108 have the heater positioned so that the coolant
circulates to the heater by the engine WP and convection.

Isn't it the aux water pump that gives us heat so fast on cold days? (faster
than any other car I've driven).

If it's the auxiliary water pump, you don't really need
it. Unless you spend a lot of time at idle in the cold
climates. Bypass it, or at least just unplug it.

No. It only speeds the waterflow through the heater
core when the engine's main water pump isn't spinning
fast enough to keep enough heat flowing in. When idling,
that is to say.
