Probably long before we got it.

Hot exhast is hot exhaust. IIRC the fire hazard is D-Jet, which has more
rubber fuel hosery to break down. If you treat
it like a classic VW, and stay on top of the fuel line maintenance, I don't
think it's any more hazardous than anything else.
The 76 SL was K-Jet, the 75 was D-Jet. Both had underhood cats. I know
little about W116, never had one.

Hmm. Could be. I have no idea. Maybe the amount of air that could get through
the grille was higher on the W116, so it ran cooler?

The problem wasn’t really the catalytic converters directly, it was the fuel
lines that broke down from the excessive heat the “cats” produced. They break
down, split, leak, whatever, and that gasoline vaporizes and catches fire. Boom!

Re: [MBZ] Sweet Interior

2023-02-12 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
That point was brought out by the paint supply people I spoke with. EPA
mandated no more paint that used VOC's and the paint companies scrambled to
formulate new systems that could meet the new EPA rules... What they
produced was paints that could meet the "No VOC emissions" rules, but the
new paints do not hold up to the test of time.
Apparently non VOC paints all came out as "low gloss" or "no gloss" so the
new production paint processes all now use a clear coat over the color base
coat... clear paint does not resist sunlight well, so now, after 3 to 5
years, it fails, and your "new car" looks bad and needs a $15,000 paint
job. [$29.95 for the paint, and $14,971.00 in labor to strip the failed
paint.]
To date, no genius has come up with a way to remove the clear coat and
preserve the color coat...

When I was a kid that was one of my chores: wash and wax dad's car. He bought

You probably can’t get the gloss level achieved with a clear coat, I would
presume.

Re: [MBZ] Sweet Interior

2023-02-11 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
I've had numerous discussions with paint supply folks about the base coat /
clear coat systems currently being used vs the single stage paint that was
used on Mercedes for decades and the explanation given was this.
"The clear coat acts as a lens that allows sunlight in, which is reflected
by the base coat back through the clear coat, which is reflective on the
back side of its surface, like a mirror. The sunlight energy then bounces
back and forth between the undersurface of the clear coat and the upper
surface of the base coat trapping the radiant sun energy between the two
materials and superheating the clear coat, which causes it to self-destruct.
Which makes sense to me, when I see just how clear coat paint fails rather
quickly in Arizona.
It is a crap system that is impossible to repair without a complete strip
and repaint [in my case, I would only repaint with single stage paint.]

10 years? Seems like it takes less than that to get the “patina” from the cars
I’ve seen in northern AZ, but that may be for newer ones with more modern paint
that doesn’t seem to hold up as well.

You would think that with the progress in materials science there would be some
developments in a clear coat that had UV resistance???
