I think that is how it is here also. I have had cars that carfax showed out of 
state salvage title but has clear ok title.

I was suggesting a rebuilt title was worth about half of a car that hadn't been
totaled. 
A salvage title is a project car that can't be driven, the price dependent on
how much it will take to make it into a rebuilt title.

What's weird here is that Florida does not recognize salvage titles on out of 
state vehicles.  When I titled the S500 in Florida, the title from North 
Carolina was clearly marked as a salvage title.  When I got the Florida title 
it said nothing, in other words, it looked no different that a regular title.

Thinking they had made a mistake, I took it to the DMV (they have an office in 
my building, which makes it convenient) and pointed this out. Their response 
was that since the car came into the state as a "legitimate" vehicle, they 
couldn't mark it as a salvage vehicle. They also pointed out that if anyone 
bothered to check, this would come out as a result of a check of the VIN with 
the NTSB or whoever it is that keeps track of flood/salvage vehicles.

My SL500 has a state issued VIN tag that's taped to the inside of the A pillar 
between the door hinges stating that it's a rebuilt vehicle and has been 
inspected by the State.

Gotcha.

The S500 coupe had a salvage title.  Made it a lot cheaper, and I knew the 
reason why, which helped.

I haven’t been scared by salvage titles, but you certainly have to do your due 
diligence.  With our older cars it’s not uncommon to find them, as one hit in 
the supermarket and the insurance company wants the car off their books.  That 
was the case with Tarek’s S500 coupe.  He took the money, bought the car back 
and had it fixed.

My 1997 SL500 has a rebuilt title, which was the result of a insurance company 
total loss and the buyer not being the owner.  He bought it from the insurance 
company as a total loss, had it repaired and inspected by the state to get it 
back on the road.

Rebuilt titles are far more rare than salvage, but to be honest, probably 
better since the state usually gets involved in certifying their roadworthiness 
and the integrity of the repair work.

And yes, it does make for a substantial hit on value, retail or private sale.  
I paid probably half of what the SL500 would have been worth had it been an 
unmolested model with the same age and miles (78k) on it.
