Re: [MBZ] extended cranking e320

2007-10-20 Thread Curt Raymond

A few years ago I had trouble with my Dodge Dakota like this. I got lots of
advice including it must just start hard that I didn't like.
Finally somebody decided to replace the fuel pump (this was right around
100,000 as I remember). Apparently theres a check valve inside the fuel pump on
that truck that keeps it from draining everything back into the tank.
After that its back the way it was starting as easy as could be.

Maybe try turning the key to on and leaving it for 15-20 seconds and see if
that makes it easier to start. AFAIK in many cars on will trigger the fuel pump
and pressurize the system.

My 1997 e320 is taking more cranking to start lately. Has 133K and I
 changed
the plugs a few hundred miles ago, old plugs looked good. Any ideas on
 what
may be causing it to take more cranks to start? This morning I turned
 it
over for about 10 seconds before it started.

Some ideas I had are fuel filter, as well as the security device in the
 key.
The car will not start with a valet key, needs to be the fob so I guess

there is a sensor near the ignition. Perhaps my fob battery is low,
 although
it opens/closes the doors just fine.

How's your spark plug wires? :-) Get spouse to start it in
full darkness with the hood up while you have a close look.

Car doesn't have typical wires - there are 3 coils, each run 2 plugs. Coils
mount on top of one plug, and there is a short wire to other plug. I will
check though.

I changed the plugs about 4 months ago (which equals maybe 200 miles on the
car since then, only drive a mile or two a day)

I thought of your sl this morning when it happened, as it was very
misty/foggy this morning.

Don't know if this would apply in your case on the MB, but my b-in-l who is a
mechanic says that if and when I
change the spark plugs in my F150 I should also get the boots that go onto the
plugs under the coils. He says they
cause troubles if they get old and leak electricity.

Re: [MBZ] extended cranking e320

2007-10-18 Thread Gary Thompson
This is absolutely true. The plug boots that sit below each coil pack
absorb a lot of heat and moving them around while changing the plugs
has caused more than one to fail. The wires that go out the side of
the coil pack to the other spark plug bank tend to fail less often.

Most often the failure mode is such that you will feel an occaisional
miss ant idle, but engine will run fine at speed. Guess a hard start
could occue as well, but I hadn't heard that one.
