Re: [MBZ] wax and buffing, oh my!
Sorry for the tardy response. The spouse had a “discectomy” (back surgery) on Tuesday so I’m running really thin between caring for her, working, and running the house. Oy. Remind me to never, ever let a surgeon touch my back or spine! I have the following HF tools: http://www.harborfreight.com/7-in-10-amp-variable-speed-polisher-60626.html http://www.harborfreight.com/6-in-57-amp-heavy-duty-dual-action-variable-speed-polisher-69924.html The first one, which is really a rotary buffer, not a polisher, is what you would use for removing a lot of material or aggressive work to level a finish, say, after wet sanding or to remove orange peel. These things can do a lot of damage, and fast. I rarely use mine, as the existing finishes on my cars are all in pretty good shape. If any of you recall the toasted finish the S500 coupe had and how I recovered that, it was a candidate for the rotary buffer because I had to remove a really think layer of oxidized paint. If you have a clear coat I would not use this on it. The potential for burning through the clear coat is really high with this tool, unless the clear is new and think That being said, it would also need to have some serious damage to it before I got near it with this. One exception: 3M has a final surface polish that is used with a rotary buffer and their proprietary foam pad. This is a polish, and is not at all aggressive. Just remember that this is a direct drive machine and very powerful. Stay in one spot too long or tip the pad and run the edge against something and you risk doing damage. The second one is my go-to machine for most work. It’s a random orbital polisher, and it works at lower speeds than the rotary buffer does, using foam pads (the rotary buffer typically uses sheepskin pads.) Since these machines oscillate, they won’t cause swirls or holograms like a rotary buffer. This also allows them to be used for polishing, buffing, and applying waxes. Some things to be aware of when using an RO machine: Choose the pad for the material. While foam pads may appear to be alike, their composition is very important relative to the material (compound or wax) being used. If you’re compounding or polishing, place a number of dime-sized spots of material on the pad and work it in with your fingers before beginning so that the pad is saturated with the material evenly. If you don’t, the first material you apply will be soaked up by the pad and not applied to the paint surface. When using an RO for polishing, keep a spray bottle of distilled water on hand. As the material dries and begins to flash off, spritz the pad with a light film of water and begin polishing again util it dries and flashes off again. Don’t use the same pad for everything. Pads can be washed, but it’s difficult to get al the material out of them. Get some ZipLoc bags, label them, and keep your pads stored in them separate from each other. Never, ever run your buffer or polisher out of contact with the surface! If you’re flinging material off the pad, you’re using too much. As with either a buffer or polisher, always work your material from coarse to fine. That’s all I can think of for now. I’ve had my HF polisher and buffer for about 6-8 years, and while I do’t use them that often, they’ve served me well. The detailing community gets all moist about the Porter Cable RO polisher, which is a nice tool, but for the price you could buy a bunch of the HF ones which effectively do the same job…. Dan, hope your wife's surgery gives a good result. Whenever I suffer a little back pain, I know it is quite miserable for me, as I have to hold back a bit to give healing an opportunity, and getting good sleep can be challenging. -- Max Dillon Charleston SC '87 300TD '95 E300 ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Jaime, did you try to get a refund? I've never had to do that yet, but I've heard that getting a replacement is usually easy within the first thirty days or so, but I'm not sure if they offer refunds or in store credit. I bought the same saws-all that Rich has, used it to cut apart 124 front lower inner bushings, nasty job but with the right blades I managed to do that without mangling any toes or fingers. I managed to rip off my left thumb nail while using a saws-all, years ago. Very painful. -- Max Dillon Charleston SC '87 300TD '95 E300 On November 6, 2015 8:11:57 PM EST, Jaime Kopchinski via Mercedeswrote: >I bought one in 2006. I bought one in 2006. The plastic gear box started flying apart half way through the first panel. I bought a makita and never looked back. Re: [MBZ] wax and buffing
I can point out both a buffer and an RO polisher on HF when I get home today. If you're going to do aggressive stuff, you've got to have both, as some jobs and materials require a buffer, others an RO polisher. I think the two I bought at HF were collectively around $50.
