The weather is unusual right now. The average temperature here in Ky.
should be in the 30's. It's about 65 right now. I think we must have swapped

Well everyone. It has been nice knowing you, but I
am now unsubscribing from the meteorite central list.
It has been a great 7 years, but now it is time to
cut loose of this medium. It seems to have degenerated into a freakshow house of
idle gossip. Rarely does anything meteorite related come up any more. I am tired
of the gossip. People allow this sort of lies without question. I will continue
my work with meteorites as usual, just not here. Ron, please add me to your
mailing list, I will truly miss you great imput.
I wish to leave now before I get driven over the
edge. I stand up for myself Dean and because of that I need to be off this list,
where submission seems to be the order of the day. How dare you call me a
crybaby. Ill see you here.

That is none of your business. Why dont you call Whitehorse Geologicel
Survey, where I spent many of my days and donated about $1000 in meteorites,
I worked with them to come to any type of aggreement on that meteorite. We
failed to reach one, I went home empty handed. That story is now 2 years
old. So Dean, why dont you stop trying to imagine what i would or would not
do and say only things that have been done.

Dean, give us ALL the name of the policeman. This is BULLSHIT, I am now
getting pissed off, your comments are not true and if you continue then I
can actually take legal actions against you. Normally I could care less
about rumors, but this one is absolutely bogus and VERY SERIOUS. I know that
you truly believe that you know everyone and everything in Africa, but I
assure you that you do not. If you have been given poor information then
that is not your fault, but spreading lies publicly can get you sued very
easy here. I am telling you now to apologize to me right now, OR I WILL get
VERY UGLY in Tucson when you get here. I am no longer amused. I never spoke
to any policeman in Morocco, never had any problem there, so what you are
saying is BULLSHIT. Get you goddammed information in a new place I suggest,
because what you think you know is not true, and is defamatory and getting
really to the point of dafamation of character. .
You may say what you like or think about me or my business, but DO NOT tell
people outright lies.
Dean, again, I want an apology right now.

I am confused. Is this a comment that you are making about casper or a
comment that you are quoting from a nomad about how he feels about you? You
are even using the same word in your email. When amouri went to the police
when you were recently were in morocco his comment was "He's screwing me". I
guess that you talked your way out of it with the police because you never
actually broke any law. Just a slimy businessmen. What more proof do you
want? I gave specific names. I am not making idle vague comments here that
somebody cannot independently verify. And if somebody wants to go over I can
give him names of police officers in morocco who spoke to you although I
wont post that publicly. But I am sure that anybody could easily get that
information from Amouri. And your only response was "He drinks a lot". From
your postings it would appear that all of your competation "drinks a lot".
Is that the best that you can come up with? Anybody who dont roll over for
the cry baby "Drinks a lot".
As far as your illegal meteorite exports go why dont you post us all copies
of your export permits? You know that you dont have them.
I would also like to respond to your casper posting accusing him of not
being reflective of the meteorite community. What about you? Are you
reflective? True Casper might get enjoyment out of harrassing you more than
other dealers sometimes but he would never sell illegally exported
meteorites. Most dealers would avoid known illegal meteorites. You are not
reflective of the meteorite dealing community. You are an outright fraud.
What about your Tagish lake trip? Are you going to tell us all that if you
actually got some that you would not have illegally brought tham back to the
United States with you when you returned?
I know that you are going to say that yes you would have gave them to the
Canadian Government and went through the practically impossible to get
export permit process but I am sure that list members can think for
themselves about what you would have done with any Tagish Lake that you
would have gotten your hands on.
So where are they farmer? Show us your Moroccan export permits. Everybody

[meteorite-list] Gilbert Ray Campground in Tucson

Hello all,
Unfortunately I will have to experience Tucson from afar this year. But I

want to pass along a place I stayed at last year that was a wonderful

bargain and a nice way to experience the fantastic desert environment.

My first night was spent in the Rodeway Inn for a mere $99 ;-). As I lay

in bed listening to traffic I vowed it would be my last night for that
price.
In the morning I contacted the kind folks at Gilbert Ray Campgrounds in

Tucson Mountain Park (about 20 minutes from downtown Tucson just
off Gates Pass Road). For $7 a night I got a quiet campsite near some

very pretty hiking trails. My time at Gilbert Ray was at least as
memorable as the show itself. The sky was dark, the stars spectacular.

The only catch is that you cannot reserve a camp site on the phone.

You have to be there in the morning when they open (they open about 8

or 9 a.m. as I recall) and ask for a spot in person. The good news is
that
you can have that spot for a number of days without needing to renew.

When I went it was no problem -- there were a bunch of openings. The

modest campground is run by a couple of the friendliest people I met.

And the people in camp -- some tent campers like myself, others with

RVs -- were quiet at night. I wish I could give you the phone number but

I can't find it in all the stuff I brought back. Just call the Tucson

Chamber of Commerce or directory assistance.
Happy lodgings!

[meteorite-list] EUVE satellite reentry

2002-01-29 Thread Matson, Robert

Hi All,

I've done a quick and dirty analysis of the upcoming EUVE decay to
assess probabilities for the reentry impacting particular locations.
For the sake of this analysis, I've assumed a reentry date/time of
1/31 06:00 UTC +/- 12 hours. Here are the probabilities I came
up with for a number of locations (some general, some specific):

Africa: 11.5%
Australia:3.8%
Brazil: 3.4%
Saudi Arabia: 1.9%
India:1.8%
Mexico: 1.1%
Peru: 0.9%
Argentina:0.8%
Chile:0.6%
Texas:0.5%
Venezuela:0.5%
Nicaragua:0.3%
Cuba: 0.3%
Bahamas: 0.1%
Hawaii: 0.1%
Belize: 0.1%

One large country I forgot to compute was southern China, which
has a probability in the same ballpark as Saudi Arabia. Pakistan,
Iran, southernmost Afghanistan, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam,
Indonesia, and the Philippines all have non-zero probabilities of
impact. However, there is a better than 60% chance that reentry
will occur over the Pacific, Atlantic or Indian Ocean.

Cheers,
Rob

2002-01-29 Thread Dave Mouat

Dear Listees
I used to agree with what Norbert requested (i.e., leave mud slinging
out of the list), but I find that some of what is said is worthwhile
(and besides, it adds a bit of humor to a stressful job) and much more
importantly, I have a pretty fast delete key. If the keeper of the list
finds it objectionable, that person can delete either the messages or
the people who write them. But I don't think we need to exercise
(exorcise?) a behavior code. If the folks in question wish to be rude
let them; if the readers of the list are offended, don't read it.

Hello,
I'm posted 3 weeks ago  some photos with a black stone  found in south of Sahara during a travel.  I'm received more than 70 responses. I thank you for your ideas!!
For 70 % of people (numerous dealers and collectors), this black stone isn't  meteorite.  What's?  Ventifact was the major idea.  Also Jade and Dorite was very interesting  ideas.  Thank you for your numerous photos of meteorite-wrong.  One dealer wish purchase it... "just for the nice aspect of this meteorite wrong"...mc
Ok, 20% of people don't say what's it. I'm observed that the majority of desert hunters don't say that's or that's not meteorite: just interesting stone.
And 10% people ( mainly collectors) think that's a meteorite.   From very old chondrite to...   lunar...It's crazy... 100% of collectors and dealers  of meteorites are in doubt.  (also me during 2 months).
I'm received today a  preliminary study based on the oxygen:  ME08   IS A METEORITE    I'm my own idea about the possible class. Sorry Bernd, it's not a lunar :-) , it's not a chondrite, not martian, and it's not ureilite.  It's other known type.

[meteorite-list] A Better Day for Everyone

2002-01-29 Thread MARSROX

List members may recall that last week I publicly renounced Ron Baalke. I am
not a subtle person by nature and it was a harsh act of finality. Ron took
the time to write me a note explaining his intent. I am satisfied with his
explanation. I am again reminded of the wisdom of waiting 24 hours before
venting.

The true victims of my angst are the good people of this list who are not
entertained by anger but are here, like me, only to seek information about
meteorites. My apologies to them.

Meanwhile, Ron and I are again working together behind the scenes to find
perfect words for the very important NASA website he administers to describe
the realities surrounding the story of the "Nakhla dog".

CONTOUR Spacecraft Shipped to Goddard for Prelaunch Testing;
Comet-Study Mission Reaches Milestone on Way to July 2002 Launch

The spacecraft set to provide the closest look ever at a comet nucleus was
shipped today from The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory
in Laurel, Maryland - where it was designed and built - to NASA's Goddard
Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, for its next round of prelaunch
testing.

Scheduled to launch July 1 from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida,
the Comet Nucleus Tour (CONTOUR) spacecraft spent the past 10 days in an APL
vibration test lab, where engineers checked the structural integrity of the
eight-sided, 6-by-6 foot craft aboard a large shake table.

"The vibration tests at APL went very well," says CONTOUR Project Manager
Mary C. Chiu of the Applied Physics Lab. "The spacecraft is in great shape
and we're ready to move on to the next stage."

At Goddard the spacecraft will undergo spin tests; acoustic tests, designed
to simulate the noise-induced vibrations of launch; and thermal vacuum
tests, which replicate the harsh conditions of deep space. In late April,
CONTOUR will be transported to Kennedy Space Center/Cape Canaveral and
prepared for launch aboard a three-stage, Boeing Delta II launch vehicle.

"By the time CONTOUR launches it will have been thoroughly tested," says
Michael J. Colby, CONTOUR lead integration and test engineer at APL. "You
have to be extremely confident that the spacecraft will be OK when it's
mounted on that Delta."

After launch, the solar-powered CONTOUR will visit at least two comets as
they travel through the inner solar system. From as close as 60 miles (100
kilometers), the spacecraft will take the most detailed pictures ever of a
comet's nucleus; map the types of rock and ice on the nucleus; and analyze
the composition of the surrounding gas and dust. CONTOUR's targets include
comet Encke in November 2003 and Schwassmann-Wachmann 3 in June 2006, though
the spacecraft can also be sent toward an as-yet-undiscovered comet. The
data will provide clues into the similarities and differences between
comets.

CONTOUR is the next launch in NASA's Discovery
Program of low-cost, scientifically focused missions. The Applied Physics
Laboratory manages the mission for NASA and will operate the spacecraft. Dr.
Joseph I. Veverka of Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, is CONTOUR's
principal investigator and heads a science team of experts from institutions
around the globe. APL, Goddard Space Flight Center and von Hoerner & Sulger,
Schwetzingen, Germany, built CONTOUR's scientific instruments; NASA's Jet
Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, California, will provide navigation
support.

[meteorite-list] Five Martian Meteorites Identified

2002-01-29 Thread Ron Baalke

Five Martian Meteorites Identified

Some rocks found in Earth's hot and cold regions originally came from Mars.

by Vanessa Thomas
astronomy.com
January 29, 2002

Meteorite hunters have discovered five more Mars rocks on Earth, bringing
the total number of known martian meteorites to 24.

Several teams of Japanese, Chinese, and French researchers will discuss the
finds at the March 2002 Lunar and Planetary Science Conference near Houston,
Texas. Research team members and other meteorite hunters spotted the pieces
of Mars in the frigid ice of the Antarctic and in the hot sands of Africa's
Sahara desert.

The teams actually discovered many new rocks, but some were located near
each other and are so similar that the scientists believe they are pieces of
the same meteorites. One of two matching pieces is the second-largest
martian meteorite found so far. (The largest is the Zagami meteorite which
landed about 10 feet away from a Nigerian farmer who was chasing crows from
his corn field on an October afternoon in 1962.) Called Y000593, Japanese
researchers found the 13.7-kilogram (30.2-pound) space rock in a bare ice
field near Antarctica's Yamato Mountains in late November 2000. A few days
later, they found a second 1.3-kg (2.8-lb) meteorite - Y000749 - nearby.
Both have a greenish interior and an outer ("fusion") crust blackened while
falling through Earth's atmosphere.

Two other meteorites were found in Antarctica. A second Japanese team
reports that the 55-gram (1.9-ounce) meteorite they call YA1075 is nearly
completely stony with a dark green interior and a shiny, black fusion crust.
A Chinese expedition discovered GRV9927 near Grove Hill and describe the
9.97-g (0.4-oz) rock as being partially covered with a black fusion crust
and having a rounded triangular cone shape with thin, clear sections and
brown crystals.

In the Saharan sands of Morocco, French meteorite hunters recovered several
pieces of rock totaling 654 g (about 1.4 lbs) which scientists believe are
all part of one meteorite. Called NWA 1068 (or sometimes "Louise Michel"),
the meteorite is greenish-brown with no fusion crust, containing fine
grains and large crystals with volcanic inclusions.

The fifth meteorite, called Dhofar 378, was uncovered in Oman. A third
Japanese team reports that the 15-g (0.5-oz) rock contains a type of glass
that was likely formed by the shock of a large impact.

After examining the content of the rocks, the various research teams
realized that all the samples belong to a category called SNC meteorites, a
group of space rocks believed to have been blasted from Mars. The
shergottites, nakhlites, and chassignites are named after the first martian
meteorites discovered: Shergotty, Nakhla, and Chassigny found in 1865, 1911,
and 1815, respectively.

RELEASE: 02-16

AGING NASA SPACECRAFT TO REENTER EARTH'S ATMOSPHERE

Engineers at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in
Greenbelt, Md., predict a 7,000-pound spacecraft could re-
enter the Earth's atmosphere as early as 10 p.m. EST on Jan.
30 or as late as 7 a.m. EST on Jan. 31.

NASA's Extreme Ultraviolet Explorer (EUVE) is currently 200
kilometers (124 miles) above the Earth with a descent rate of
25 kilometers (15.5 miles) a day. The estimated debris field
is expected to be 800 to 1,000 kilometers (500-625 miles).

"The probability of the few EUVE surviving pieces falling
into a populated area and hurting someone is very small. It
is more likely that the small pieces will fall into the ocean
or fall harmlessly to the ground," said Ronald E. Mahmot,
Project Manager for Space Science Mission Operations at
Goddard.

Unlike the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, which was safely
de-orbited June 4, 2000, EUVE does not have an on-board
propulsion system to allow engineers to control its re-entry.
Much of EUVE will burn up in the atmosphere before ever
reaching the ground. However, estimates show that up to nine
objects ranging from approximately four to 100 pounds may
survive re-entry. Much of this debris is made of titanium and
stainless steel.

EUVE will start to break up when it falls to within 80
kilometers (50 miles) of the Earth. At this point, EUVE will
have only four or five 90-minute orbits left before re-
entering the Earth's atmosphere. Engineers will not know the
re-entry point until approximately 12 hours prior to impact.

EUVE is in a 28.5-degree orbit and could re-enter in any
location within this orbit range. This ranges includes areas
as far north as Orlando, Fla., and as far south as Brisbane,
Australia.

EUVE was launched on June 7, 1992. Science operations ended
for the spacecraft in December 2001. During its early years,
EUVE was operated from Goddard. In 1997, control of EUVE was
transitioned from Goddard to the University of California,
Berkeley and remained there until the program's termination
in 2001. Slated for only three years, EUVE was operational
for eight. NASA twice extended its scientific mission.

During its eight years in orbit, EUVE successfully opened a
new window on the cosmos and helped to bridge the gap in our
understanding of the extreme ultraviolet spectrum. Rather
than seeing about 24 nearby objects as many predicted, EUVE
observed more than 1,000 nearby sources, including more than
three dozen objects outside our galaxy.

Additional background information about EUVE is available on
the Internet at:

[meteorite-list] Cheap lodging in Tucson

2002-01-29 Thread Bob King

Hello all,
Unfortunately I will have to experience Tucson from afar this year. But I
want to pass along a place I stayed at last year that was a wonderful
bargain and a nice way to experience the fantastic desert environment.
My first night was spent in the Rodeway Inn for a mere $99 ;-). As I lay
in bed listening to traffic I vowed it would be my last night for that price.
The good news is that
you can have that spot for a number of days without needing to renew.
Happy lodgings!

proof, or are you just talking out of your other end. Show me, how do you know

Enemies in Morocco? I dont htink so, Ive been there 13 times and never been

Commisions from both I and Jim. What he did with it is not my concern. You know
Amouri, he drank for months, not my problem. You say in your email that I never
broke any laws, then why do you say I illegally export meteorites? Get your
statements correct, then post them. Dean, I have NOTHING to hide, so I welcome
any and I mean ANY information you wish to place here.
I never attacked Bruno, we had arguments, but we
resolved them in person in Europe. We are not the best of friends but we see
that all are entitled to success or failure in this business. I leave him alone,
he leave me alone. No problems any more. Dean, I do not care what you do, I just

I guess that we are going to regularly get exposed to the Mike Farmer Pre
Tucson freak show every year now as he attacks other dealers buying NWA
meteorites. I guess that it will be a Tucson ritual from now on. I would like
to refer everybody to last years list archaives where he started attacking
Bruno and accusing him somehow interfering with his meteorite buying (Although
nobody has actually figured out how Bruno was doing this). Looks like you had
a problem at the airport once with your meteorites and accused Bruno of
causing problems for you with customs (Its in the list archaives - go
find them). Bruno was quite happy tp point out how to get the export permits
needed to legally export meteorites from Morocco. Unlike you, most other
people like Bruno are helpful. He willingly pointed out to you what
most sane business people would have done and did research on the local laws
where he was doing business before he lined up "investors". For everybodys
information Morocco has meteorite export laws. You need an export permit to
export meteorites from morocco. It is a day and a half process at the
moroccan ministry of mines to get one. But you never ever got one did you?
Thats right every one of your customers that you have sold NWA meteorites to
has an illegal meteorite. EVERY SINGLE METEORITE FROM NWA THAT YOU HAVE SOLD
TO YOUR CUSTOMERS WAS ILLEGALLY EXPORTED. They are in the same catagory as if
you found some Tagish Lake in your search in Canada and illegally carried it
out and sold it.You know its true. You dont have export permits and that you
have sold all of your customers illegal meteorites.
Likely you wont have the moroccan government coming after you with the H5s
but with the rare stuff like your lunar you just had better hope that
your customers dont get exposed to some future US government agreement with
the moroccans to return all illegal meteorites (Dont think that this is not a
possibility - the US government is quite willing to confiscate and return
illegally exported artifacts from certain latin american countries that they
have agreements with to do so).
But lets talk about the Lunar a little more. How happy is the person who
you bought it from? You had a little run in with the police last week in
Morocco didnt you? You never broke any law I guess as you didnt end up in jail
but your past dealings in morocco have gotten you some bad enemies in Morocco.
Any some will try to cause legal problems for you. I dont know if they
are justified or not but you seem to have had some bad business dealings and
when you were recently in morocco got some personal threats from people that
you bought meteorites from in the past didnt you farmer. You can bet that they
would cause you more trouble if they could. Your investors just had better
hope that nobody in morocco tips off the customs people that you illegally
export meteorites and get them all confiscated on you. I doubt that you have
money to pay all of your investors back. Just goes to show how you treat the
people that you deal with over there and how happy they are. Maybe let the
buyers of your Lunar know  exactly how the moroccans like your ha

BRAVO! Bernd...Bravo.
I am personally sick of all this bickering about the price of this or the
availability of that. Seems like the combatants should meet in a cage match
in Tucson and decide the outcomeIf they are going to bicker like the
losers in the WWF then maybe they should just start painting their faces,
dressing in tights and pretend to beat the hell out of each other like they
do on TV. It sure would be more entertaining than reading this childish
pissing match.

Can we just get on with the normal course of business on the list and quit
worrying about this nonsense?

I was going to ride the 2 hours down to Tucson to see the show.I am not
sure if it is going to be worth it nowthis just seems so silly.

I once asked this list if meteorites were a worthwhile investment for people
who were tired of the stock market and had money to burn. Almost EVERYONE at
that time said NO, the price fluctuates, the supply is limited and that it
just wasn't a good idea. I bought 400 grams of Brahin from Ivan when it was
a deal to get it around $3-4 a gram. I sold some of itI also have half
of it sitting hereI haven't yelled or complained to or about IVAN as he
routinely dumps specimens on ebay for less than a dollar. I know that
someday it will go upmaybe not.
Seems to me if you spend a dollar on a meteorite, you may make more, you may
make less, JUST LIKE ANY OTHER INVESTMENT. I do not think that anyone cares
what anyone says the price should be on any particular meteorite, IF SOMEONE
WANTS TO PAY TOO MUCH THAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN ANYWAY.
My wife and I sell collectibles on Ebay, we routinely have bidders pay way
too much for items and we routinely buy items that barely make any money
when they should sell for hundreds. That my friends is free market and
capitalism at its best. Do we tell those people that pay too much for an
item that they didOF COURSE NOT, do we whine when we lose our ass on an
itemOF COURSE NOT.

I guess I am rambling and I apologize. It just seems to me that everyone
should realize that we will not all always agree. If someone wants to say
that something should cost more...so be it. If someone wants to say that
there are none of a particular specimen left...so be it.

Please lets just get on with the regular business of the list.

Thanks for reading this farif it doesn't make any sense, I apologize,
but at least it is consistent with what has been here lately.

Dear Mikey,
You'll do what? Answer my questions? Really, I've not seen that so far.
Bilanga is exactly as I stated. You were blasting Farmer for having high
prices on Bilanga and bragging that you had a bunch of small pieces for way
less. I emailed you off list saying I wanted some and you said you didn't
have any. I couldn't care less what kind of a deal you give me Mikey. If
you can get such wonderful deals on stuff like you say you can then let's
see it. Why don't you put some NWA 482 up on eBay for everyone to see?
Also, why don't you answer the question of why you continue to continue to
post on this list and give us all more proof that you're a fool Mikey? And
exactly how does running your ridiculous METEORITE auction help your COIN
business?
Come on Mikey, answer the questions.

OK, I'll do that since you're such a big baby. Now what's this about the
Bilanga?
I had the main mass of Bilanga. Farmer ahd Haag were flying to Africa and my
20kgs
was on a plane passing them on it merry way to me. You didn't get any
cause you didn't come up with the MONEY!
And stop calling me Mikey! It's Mr. Casper for you. Now if youe a good
little fella and
apologise to Mr. Casper, maybe, just maybe I'll let you in on a real good
deal...Don't ever say
that I didn't give you a chance Now let's have it. First call me Mr.
Casper, and then apologise. It
all better sound very convincing or the deal's off.

Dear List and Michael;
Here's the link to the old or maybe even current list. I visited it
yesterday and noticed that many of the dealers had a business link but
did not have a location to find them at the show.
Would anyone have a link to a Tucson city map that could be down loaded
and printed for the folks like me who haven't been to Tucson in 30
years?Link has written directions to meteorite events but a map,
like a picture, would "speak thousands of words".

[meteorite-list] Meteorite Book Review - Part 1

2002-01-29 Thread Mark Bostick

Hello Everybody
I have been slowly...really slow this last two weeks
pushing things for Tuscon...working on a meteorite website I will someday have
up.  Meteoritecollection.com.
One of the things I have been writing up is meteorite
book reviews.  Here is an example of two of them.  Thought the list
could use a little change of subject from the flood our boxes have recieved
lately:-)
I plan to have weight, size, key photos listings, IBSN
numbers, dust jacket comments as well as my own.  All the information you
always see on books...plus several lines that may be of help.
I look foward to seeing Carion's and Norton's new book
and will provide reviews for them shortly after Tuscon.  See
everybodyokay part of youin Tuscon next week!
Mark Bostick "The Big Collector"
Meteorites: A Photographic Study of Surface Features Part 1. Shapes

(c) 1977 Arizona University. Harvey H. Nininger. 148pgs. Paperbound,
water damaged
From the foreword inside by Carleton B. Moore, Center of Meteorite
Studies:
"Throughout a lifetime of meteorite investigation, Dr. H.H. Nininger
has built up not only a large store of knowledge about meteorites, but a large
file of meteorite pitchures. He has brought these pictures together in order to
illustate the features of meteorites needed to find new meteorites in the field
and to provide interested meteoriticist with a source of information on
meteorite shapes, fusion crusts, pitting and furrowing, orientation, weathering,
sizes and impact effects. Such information has not been collectd in one source
and some has never been published before"
Mark Bostick's comments: Nininger studied surface features of
meteorites for many years and had a display on the topic at the American
Meteorite Musuem in Arizonia. Before Nininger this topic was for the most part
overlooked in meteorite study. This book features literally hundreds of
meteorites photos. From plow marks to weathering. Each photo also has a Nininger
writeup describing the meteorites shape. An example of this as follows, from
page 81 of the book. "Ottawa, Kansas. An amphoterite which was the only recovery
from a fall witnessed in 1896. It shows a well-developed crust with two breaks
and numerous contraction cracks and incipient pitting. It also shows clear
evidence of being a fragment from a large parental mass." All Nininger books are
must reads if possible (Note: I am Nininger bias..:) The first book of a two
book set.

Book Measures: 10 15/16" x 8 3/8" x 5/16" or 212mm x 279mm x
9mm
Book Weighs: 378 grams or 13.3 oz.
Photos include: Brenham Meteorite whole speciman at the Field Museum
of Natural History, Chicago (page 59), Brenham Meteorite Slice at the American
Museum of Natural History, New York (page 59), Brenham meteorite specimans found
on the alter of an ancient indian burial mound in Ohio (page 65), Three photos
featuring excavating the crater with Harvey Nininger (pages 88 and 89), Nininger
with son and Brenham meteorites recovered from Crater (page 91), Raising the
largest Brenham speciman in 1949 (page 101), H.O. Stockwell with his 1,000 pound
meteorite he discovered, Two Brenham Meteorites slices at the American Meteorite
Laboratory in Denver, Colorado (page 107), Brenham Meteorite slice at the
Smithsonian Institution (page 108), Brenham Meteorite slice at the Cranbrook
Institute of Sciencesm Bloomfield Hills, Michigan (page 108).
Mark Bostick's comments: All your ever wanted to know about the
Brenham pallasite and more. This book features two stories. The modern story of
the meteorite complete with economical and social impact of the find and a made
up story of a Native tribe when the meteorite fell. Book interweaves between the
two storys. Nicely put together and very well researched make this a great read.
The writers personal knowledge of the Kansas area bleeds through the pages. Lots
of photos and illustrations.

[meteorite-list] Somewhat interesting and quirky beginner meteor-wrong story!

2002-01-29 Thread Jeff K.

Here's a "somewhat" interesting story of my own little
meteor-wrong! A few months back I heard something
quite small and hard hit my house roof, which is tin
so it was pretty obvious. I suspected it may have been
a cherry-pip that a bird had dropped from a nearby
orchard.

Turns out that's exactly what it was!!! Only, when I
was up there getting my extraordinarily rare meteorite
in the new classification, 'cherrypipite'; I actually
found around 5-10 very small, dark brown-black stones.
This intrigued me as they didn't seem to fit into the
surounding geology. Although I was 99% sure they were
not of meteoritic origin, I decided to email an
expert. He thought as I did; that a bird had also
probably dropped them onto the roof!!!

They were some form of everyday common 'Buckshot
gravel'. (Largely composed of iron oxides. Typically
the mineral maghemite is present making them strongly
magnetic.) When I went and had a closer look at the
surrounding ground, I was able to find some of this
material. But it probably only make up around 0.1% (if
that) of the surface stones. So how is it that these
less common stones were the only type on the roof???

WELL! My Theory! Some birds actually swallow small
stones to aid in their digestion. All these Buckshot
gravel stones (both roof and on the ground) are a
similar small size, quite rounded with no sharp edges
and their very dark colour stands out against the
other pale clay-based rocks. I believe these birds
have learnt to go for these tasty little buckshots!!!

Has anyone else ever heard of this or know anything
about it?

Hope this has provided a bit of light refreshment from
some of the current postings and if anyone else has a
funny or quirky story about meteorite related stuff,
I'm sure quite a few on the list wouldn't mind hearing
it! After all; that's what it's all about!

Have fun,

Jeff K.
