[meteorite-list] The Macovich Room

2002-02-06 Thread meteorites

Folks, and all...

I am in the Macovich Room again at InnSuites room 404
and what a display Darryl has set up!

You MUST see it! It is eye candy!

And really the pieces to bid on, many without reserve!

The Shergotty...

The Lunars...

Mocs...

Rare finds, and classic falls...

The pallasites...

Stop by, say hi and register to bid for these and other
pieces. And if you can't come to Tucson check out the
auction page at:

http://www.macovich.com

The last of the Glorieta is here, too. Such beautiful
slices! And one is in the auction.

(But I really like the endpiece which is not in the
auction, the piece that I first touched as I dug it up)

[meteorite-list] Telescope given to Andre Bordeleau

2002-02-06 Thread Rick Nowak

This was not easy at all:( I got alot of emails. I
thought giving it to a family with the most people
would be the greatest benefit. Instead I gave it to
one child because I felt family members could lean on
each other. I hope to pick up more scopes and
merteorites in the future and make them avaible for
others that requested them. Thank you all for your
replys. I felt EVERYONE was serious and genuie in
their emails. Rick

The following email

 I would offer the
telescope to a 9 year old girl on our street. She is
a bright girl but
quite lonely. No one her own age to play with. She
comes to our place
often to play with our dogs (we are childless) and
often asks about the
sky. I have taken her to see several of my shows at
the Planetarium.
I
think she would thouroughly enjoy the telescope.

Thanks for reading

Not to put a wet blanket on anyone's exploration of the universe and their

I come here to read/learn about my favorite Rocks from Space. An

Randi's latest hoax-busting, and News of the Weird. I'd like to keep this

[meteorite-list] OT: the Big questions

Actually, the chicken/egg question
is far simpler to answer.  Egg
came
first -- warm-blooded reptile
egg.  Chickens (birds in general)
trace their
evolution back to
dinosaurs.

They are useful labels for
perceived physical properties (position
and
velocity).  Whether they have
any objective reality (or for that
matter
whether anything does) is an
interesting philosophical question --
one that
may ultimately be
answerable by science.

42.  (Douglas Adams fans will
know what I mean).  Your decision
is
logically sound:  if there is
indeed a God, you can ask away.
Of
course, He may not choose to
oblige you with answers.  ;-)
On
the
other hand, if
there is no God or whatever you choose to
call
a Supreme Intelligence, then you
won't be around in the hereafter
to pose such questions or care
about the answers.

Hello everyone, just a quick Tucson show report.
The show is in full swing and very busy.
Lots of nice stuff here but meteorites are
scarcer than ever before! There are more dealers but not so many meteorites to
choose from. Allende and Gibeon are virtually non-existant for a change.
Surprisingly there is also not so many NWA's here either. Marvin Kilgore has
many nice rare meteorites, Pitt also has alot of beautiful things. Blaine Reed
has his usual nice assortment of all kinds of stuff.
We are having a blast, snow is gone, warm days
  and cool nights are back.
I am now also sold out of the hardback
autographed Rocks from Space books, so Casper can now get some action on
  ebay.
I also have many items ending tonight, most
  started at one penny!
  Check them out.

[meteorite-list] Meteors Go Pop In The Night

Meteors go pop in the night

Recordings of sounds from shooting stars defy explanation.

Nature Science Update
Philip Ball
February 6, 2002

Scientists camping out in the Mongolian snow at minus 30 degrees C have made the
first recordings of an elusive sound: the crackle and pop of a meteor
shower[1]. Their observations defy all current explanations of what happens
when debris burns up on entry to the Earth's atmosphere.

"Basically, we are back to the drawing-board," says expedition member Dejan
Vinkovic of the University of Kentucky.

Some meteor booms are simply acoustic waves like those from supersonic
aircraft. But for centuries there have been rumours of more baffling
'electrophonic' noises occurring at the same time as meteors become visible.

Because light travels much faster than sound, there should be a delay
between the appearance of a meteor and its sound - just as thunder generally
comes seconds after a lightning flash. In fact, meteors burn up so high in
the atmosphere that this time delay ought to be a few minutes.

Yet many observers report hearing pops, buzzes and whistles while sighting a
meteor for the first time. The Italian Geminiano Montanari was the first to
note this discrepancy in 1676. Reviewing such reports in 1714, the
astronomer Edmond Halley concluded that they were merely figments of the
imagination. Until now, many other scientists thought so too.

Fireball survey

Vinkovic was not so sure. He has collected about 700 accounts of meteor
noise, and is pursuing dozens of recent claims. The phenomenon was
particularly well documented during the spectacular Leonid shower of 1833,
when people described sounds resembling "the noise of a child's popgun".
Similar reports accompanied two more recent Leonid storms.

In 2000, Vinkovic and others established the Global Electrophonic Fireball
Survey, to collate such reports worldwide.

Next Vinkovic and researchers from the Croatian Physical Society journeyed
to a "remote desert-like plain" 20 kilometres from Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia
to observe the 1998 Leonid shower. As this area is virtually free from
background noise and radio interference, the researchers measured audio and
low radio-frequency signals that the meteors triggered.

On the radio

Why radio signals? Because one of the leading candidate theories is that
electrically charged particles streaming behind meteors interact with the
Earth's magnetic field and produce radio waves, which cause the
electrophonic noises. These radio waves are broadcast to an observer at the
speed of light. They could be converted to sound by exciting vibrations in
objects at ground level.

Very-long-frequency (VLF) radio signals have occasionally been detected
alongside meteors. The Croatian team recorded two electrophonic pops but no
simultaneous VLF signals.

If radio waves do create the pops (as the team still believes), these waves
must be of lower frequency than anticipated. No explanation so far proposed
explains the measurements made in the Mongolian plains.

[meteorite-list] To Antarctica And Beyond

To Antarctica and beyond

Geologist finds clues from space

By Lynette Kalsnes
Chicago Tribune
February 6, 2002

Planetary geologist Paul Sipiera squinted into his microscope at a rock that
looked like a charcoal briquette and gasped with pleasure.

"Bingo," he said. Then he broke into song.

After 26 days traveling to Antarctica recently, the Harper College professor
was hopeful that his expedition team had discovered at least two rare
meteorites among its cache of 33.

His first inspection last week at the Palatine college found that the black
lump was probably a stony meteorite from an asteroid discovered 200 years
ago and the other was a rare meteorite representing less than 1 percent of
the 25,000 found. More sophisticated testing must be done to confirm their
rarity.

"That's what I was hoping we would find in the field," said Sipiera, 53, of
Algonquin. "In this case it was a winner."

The journey to Antarctica was the geology and astronomy professor's fourth
expedition and his sixth trip there.

He and nine scientists, explorers, guides and a photographer traveled to the
Pecora Escarpment, 330 miles from the nearest human at the South Pole, to
collect meteorites and hardy microorganisms that can survive Antarctica's
extremes.

The group included adventurers David Butts of Algonquin, Elvira Butz of
Winnetka and James Pritzker of Chicago, who heads a private investment
company and is a member of the billionaire Pritzker family.

Meteorites are ancient chunks of the moon, planets and asteroids that have
fallen to Earth. They can provide clues about the birth of the solar system
and the origin of life, Sipiera said.

Sipiera will study his finds at Harper and the University of Illinois at
Chicago and will forward the rarest to Alabama's NASA Marshall Space Flight
Center, which has more sophisticated equipment. The meteorites will be
sliced as thin as an onion skin, analyzed for mineral makeup and added to
the books.

Sipiera, president and co-founder of the non-profit science education
organization Planetary Studies Foundation, was instrumental in building
Harper's observatory. He secured the James M. DuPont meteorite collection,
one of the world's largest, for the foundation.

A Northeastern Illinois University colleague compares Sipiera's treks to a
botanist searching for rare plants in a rain forest.

"The only way we can get evidence like this is have these very, very brave
souls go out into conditions like this," said Paul Poskozim, chairman of the
university's chemistry, earth science and physics department.

Antarctica is the most ideal place on Earth to find meteorites because it is
pristine, Sipiera said.

Meteorites fall from space into the deep freeze of Antarctica, where they
remain relatively uncontaminated and well-preserved, said astrophysics
professor Bruce Dod of Mercer University in Macon, Ga.

They lie on the snow, dark spots easily visible in the white landscape of
ice and rock. Finding meteorites is like an Easter egg hunt in subzero
temperatures.

"Paul has contributed tremendously by knowing where ideal places are to go
and look for meteorites," said NASA astrobiologist Richard Hoover, who has
journeyed to Antarctica and studied meteorites with him. "He can almost
smell them in the air."

Hoover said Sipiera has tremendous knowledge, has made significant finds and
carefully handles and precisely catalogs the specimens. Sipiera's foundation
follows scientific and treaty guidelines.

Sipiera took local schools on a virtual trek via e-mail and experiments. He
has written 28 children's books on scientific subjects.

Classes at Hanover Highlands Elementary School in Hanover Park and Elgin's
Hillcrest Elementary School charted Sipiera's latest expedition, read
journal entries and asked questions via the Internet.

The pupils packed snow into cups and predicted melting times, said Hanover
Highlands teacher Mary Ann Bilski. They compared the freezing rates of water
in a refrigerator's freezer and a chest freezer in the teachers' lounge.

"Antarctica is kind of a lost continent in most elementary schools, and now
we've learned so much about it," Bilski said.

Sipiera attributes his own interest in the physical world to his mother, who
would stare at the moon as a girl and marvel about what it was made of.

Sipiera got hooked on meteorites after reading children's astronomy books.
He took the "Stars" Golden Guide with him to the railroad tracks and found a
rock he was sure was a meteorite.

He kept the rock until he analyzed it as a graduate student and learned it
was just crud from the railroad. He discarded his childhood treasure but
kept his fascination.

"I really want to go into space, and I'll never have the chance," Sipiera
said. "This is the next best thing. I can work with bits and pieces from
space."

moon. Those craters really jump out at you! I do not
want to get into this branch of astromony. The scope
is in it's original box used by still a mint. I will
pick the best e mail in the most non bias fair way
possible. I will ship international if need be at my

It is true Farmer. They are cheaper in
  Tucson. But these people
are not going to Tucson. Perhaps you can
  advise everyone how much
a hardcover volume of "ROCKS FROM SPACE"
  signed by Richard and
  Dorothy should
really be. Perhaps you can supply some signed copies
Farmer? How much will you charge? Farmer
  you really are an idiot.
