[meteorite-list] H-chondrite or mesosiderite?

2003-10-26 Thread Graham Christensen

Question for all you experts at visual
assesments...

I got this one meteoritein a bag of
unclassified NWAs.I thought it was an H-chondrite but it doesn't seem to
have much for chondrulesand it has more metal than most chondrites I've
seen and I was wondering if it could possibly be a mesosiderite? (I posted
something about this a lng time ago but I didn't have a photo then) Anyways,
here's the pic:

[meteorite-list] Brenham Meteorode Collector Indentification, Help

2003-10-26 Thread Zelimir Gabelica
Hello Mark,

Your Brenham meteorode most probably stems from the Monnig collection. I
have quite a few of such meteorites with similar collection numbers painted,
thus an M between numbers.
However, to be absolutely sure, I suggest you contact Arthur Ehlmann from
TCU. I believe that, knowing the whole number, he could tell you that it is
a Brenham even if you don't specify in advance.

Good luck,

Zelimir

10M225

Looks almost Monnig like lettering and could be from his collection as the
letters are about 4mm tall and very clearly written in block letters,
simular to Nininger numbered meteorites. (Abby could write some small
numbers sometimes...which my understanding is that she numbered the
collection). Any, it weighs 95 grams.

Also, I put a new logo on my website. If your not busy, let me know what

[meteorite-list] Ad: Dho908 - New Moon Rock CHARITY auction is ending soon!!

2003-10-26 Thread Martin Altmann

Dearlist,

today in a few hours (12:30 PST) the charity

or www.ebay.com
search for: Moon
rock
orinsert the item
number: 2197271212

Yesterday (what a timing!) the official Dhofar
number arrived! It's now:
DHOFAR 908

My experiences in selling meteorites showed, that
especially collectors from the U.S. have doubts to order from Europe, because
they fear complications.
I can ensure, that there are no problems, all the
overseas transactions I made, were smooth fast.
I will send the piece immediately after the
auction, as soon as I will have the shipping address, with registered airmail on
my costs, which took always not longer than5 - 10 days.
So don't be shy, bid high and often, it's
easy.

Other donations are of course gratefully
welcomed!!

I will leave for Romania on 9th of
November.

Let's have a great finale !!

Re: [meteorite-list] California Burning

2003-10-26 Thread Michael L Blood
For those who may not be aware of the latest:
I awoke at a VERY atypical 6:45 AM to a HOT room - got up and closed
the bedroom window and went around the house to close the doors
windows and turn off the fans which HAD BEEN blowing cool air through
the house. This is VERY unusual, as even on the hottest of days, it usually
stays cool until at least 7:30 AM.
However, I noticed something strange in the sky as I was going
around and looked out to see the entire northern half of the sky a DARK,
dark cloud but not a cloud...this was clearly a HUGE fire in the north.
I turned on the TV and, sure enough, there were multiple fires in
the LA back country areas.
I went about my business, but as time has gone on, it started
raining ash and the sky had become very sci-fi movie looking
I checked the news again and fires had broken out ALL AROUND
San Diego and the LA fires had already raced this far!
Now, what had been 6 homes destroyed at 6:45 AM has become
countless homes destroyed, hundreds more in eminent danger,
humongus numbers of areas have had REQUIRED evacuation, many
freeways and highways have been closed, everyone has been asked
to turn off all but one TV and use no electricity or water, as they are
needed to fight the fires.
I live IN San Diego, so it would have to become one of the greatest
national catastrophes on record to burn my home, but thousands are
being effected right now and many more are on alert and asked to have
all bags packed and ready to evacuate at a moment's notice.
So, if you believe in God, your prayers would be appreciated. If you
don't, your holding an image of abatement of the fires and safety of
home and body in this part of the world would be appreciated.
As I look out my office window it is SO strange to see huge snow
flake like ashes drifting down, a wind blowing and a truly eerie sky.
Best wishes, Michael

[meteorite-list] Introduction and coments on collecting habits.

2003-10-26 Thread mike miller

Hello everyone I just wanted to introduce my self,
my name Is Mike Miller. On E-bay I am known as Flattoprocks. I started out by
getting the idea in my head that I could actually go out in the desert ( I live
in Arizona) and find a "shooting star". I was able to do that in the Gold Basin
strewn field and since I have hunted the Holbrook, Glorieta Mountain and also
found a couple of meteorites on Red Lake.
That is how my collecting got started, I kept
( in my opinion) the best pieces I found of a particular meteorite. Now they
have grown to collecting any outstanding specimen that I might have the chance
to purchase or trade for.
I also wanted to let everyone know I have for
sale or trade Glorieta Mountain Pallasite slices in the 60 to 120 gram range. At
the reasonable price of $25.00 per gram. If you have any questions you can
contact me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

[meteorite-list] Meteors From Hermes?

2003-10-26 Thread Ron Baalke

Forwarded from Robert Lunsford

On November 1, 2003, near 0930 Universal Time, the Earth will pass within
0.007 astronomical units from the orbit of rediscovered asteroid 1937 UB
Hermes. This particular time favors observers located in North and Central
America, where the radiant will be high in a dark sky. While chances for any
activity is remote, the skies should be monitored on that night for any
unusual activity. The radiant will be centered at 02:38 (039) +04, which is
located in northeastern Cetus, very close to the third magnitude star Gamma
Ceti. The radiant will be very large and will overlap the nearby Taurid
radiants. The possibility of Taurid meteors appearing as Cetids will be
quite high. On November 1, the center of the Taurid radiant will be located
five degrees southwest of the Pleiades star cluster. On this date an average
of five Taurid meteors are produced each hour. While the Taurid meteors are
slow, any activity from Hermes will be even slower. On that night (Oct
31/Nov 1) the first quarter moon will be located in the constellation of
Capricornus and will set near 2300 (11pm local standard time) allowing dark
skies for most observers.

Be sure to share your observations, either positive or negative, with me
([EMAIL PROTECTED]) and I will forward a summary to Sky Telescope and
to interested meteor groups.

Clear Skies!

Hello Everyone, Thanks to everyone that responded to my meteorode question. A couple list members are probley thinking, what is a meteorode? Meteorode is one of our many Nininger termed items. Theseare the weathered meteorites pulled out from "under and inside" of the brenham crater rim. Although Nininger found 1200 lbs of them, only one or two seem to make their way to the market every six months or so.Nininger also made the comment that these oxidized meteorites were so altered they could easily be mistaken for ordinary iron concretions. [meteorite-list] Europe Gears Up For Comet Chaser (Rosetta)

2003-10-26 Thread Ron Baalke

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/science/nature/3208804.stm

Europe gears up for comet chaser
By Helen Briggs
BBC News
October 24, 2003

Europe is stepping up its preparations for the launch of a space craft designed
to chase and land on a comet.

The Rosetta mission was scrubbed at the last minute in January because of
problems with the Ariane rocket system that would have launched it from Earth.

It will now lift off in February 2004, after a delay of more than a year.

Project engineers are about to enter the final launch campaign after a summer
spent modifying the space probe.

Scientists have had to choose a new target comet - a ball of ice and rock
known as Churyumov-Gerasimenko.

The new destination has posed some engineering challenges for the European
Space Agency (Esa), not least because the comet is three times larger than
Wirtanen, its original quarry.

When Rosetta reaches the comet, it will drop a 100-kilogram lander, the size of a
washing machine, which will descend at walking speed and harpoon itself to the
comet's surface.

Engineers were concerned that the lander, designed to touch down on a much
smaller body, could travel too fast and topple over because of the comet's
stronger gravitational pull.

To overcome this, they have fitted a
mechanical device to stop it tilting, in addition to the lander's existing three legs
which will unfold and absorb the energy of the impact.

We've had to look at all the mission elements and make sure this new mission
can be satisfied by the space craft that was ready to be launched in January 2003,
said John Ellwood, project manager at Esa.

I think we're very confident we've looked at all the mission aspects - Ariane is in
good shape and I think the space craft is ready to go.

Rocket modification

Rosetta is scheduled for launch on 26 February 2004 on an Ariane-5 G+ rocket
from Europe's spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana.

The booster has a similar configuration to the one used to shoot Europe's Smart 1
mission at the Moon in September.

Rosetta, which has been stored in a facility in Kourou for the past nine months,
will now go through the final testing programme.

Its communications system will be checked out; giant solar arrays - the
width of a football pitch when deployed - will be re-fitted; and, in January,
fuel will be pumped on board.

Stardust

The New Year promises to be an exciting time for cometary missions. The US
space agency (Nasa) will direct its Stardust space craft to fly by Comet Wild 2 at
the beginning of January.

The probe will capture up-close pictures of the icy heart of a comet for only the
third time ever. For the first time in history, it will then try to snatch a
sample of dust due for return to Earth in 2006.

Approaching at a speed of six kilometres per second (14,000 miles per hour),
Stardust will try to capture the tiny particles that make up the comet's tail.

Dr Mark Burchell, of the University of Kent in southern England, is a collaborator
on the mission.

We will have freshly emitted dust grains from a comet and we know which comet
they came from, he told BBC News Online, we'll know what that comet is made
of and we'll know what the early Solar System was made of.

[meteorite-list] Modeling Meteorite Impacts

Title:Modeling Meteorite Impacts: What we Know and What we Would

Journal: Results of the Workshop on Impact Cratering: Bridging the
  Gap Between Modeling and Observations
Published:20030101

Pages:2

Abstract: Meteorite impacts can be studied by computer simulation:
Large meteorite impacts are among those phenomena that are
either too large or too dangerous to study experimentally.
Although impacts have affected the formation and surfaces
of nearly every body in the solar system, we are limited to
observing the results of past events. Investigation of
impact processes is thus divided into observational studies
of the traces of past impacts, small-scale analogue
laboratory experiments and, most recently, detailed
computer modeling. Computer models offer the possibility of
studying craters at all scales, provided we completely
understand the physics of the process and possess enough
computer power to simulate the features of interest.

RE: [meteorite-list] The Nininger crapper

2003-10-26 Thread Charles Viau

Tim,

 That
was some really funny stuff. A porcelain crust with an interior red melt matrix. Nice Find!.

 I
think Harvey would be proud.

Whats wrong with
the rest of the list no sense of humor this month?
