Re: [meteorite-list] Re: Moon Rock Stolen in Malta
Bob, You said: I'll bet you my next year's personal earnings that it will fetch FAR more than a measly $5 million. I say: Don't tell me...you don't work and live off your partner's earnings? First off I did not say the raisin rock from Malta was a meteorite...I was just comparing the price of moon rock, regardless of where it was picked up. Assuming a raisin sized moon rock weighed a gram...the $5 million/gram versus $1,000/gram is 5000 times more costly. I'd bet you your next year's earnings that NASA would be on ebay selling moon rocks if they could get $5,000,000/g for it. Joking John, Reading, PA John, It is not a lunar METEORITE that was stolen. You mean to tell me that you sell material from the Apollo 17 Moon Mission for $1,000 per gram??? Hell, **I'LL** buy all of that you can get your hands on, provided you can provide free and clear title, documentation, and provenance for the specimens. It is a priceless piece of U.S. (indeed, HUMAN) history. A piece of the Moon as large as a raisin brought back by the Apollo 17 crew valued at _only_ $5 million? If such a thing is ever legally sold, I'll bet you my next year's personal earnings that it will fetch FAR more than a measly $5 million. Yes, John, I know you're joking, but I couldn't let that pass. $1,000 per gram indeed! :/ - Bob Martino, Tucson, AZ You're not going crazy. You're going sane in a crazy world! -The Tick $5 million in US dollars for a raisin size moon rock? That seems a bit inflated...even for a piece picked up on the moon. Re: [meteorite-list] Columbia Basin tektites?
Marc all, I have been corresponding with the eBay seller offering this material. He's an honest guy who was sold the material by a rockhound in good faith. Typical story. Local geologist looked at them and said they were tektites, etc, etc. There is currently no reason to think thay are real. The seller has offered to send some to me for exam, and is willing to pull the auctions if they're not tektites. (However, there's no way for the timing to work on this offer). For the moment, it is best (and probably--at 99.% level, correct---) to assume that this is not what is claimed. Norm Lehrman http://tektitesource.com --- Marc D. [meteorite-list] From the strewnfield of the newest meteorite fall.............
Hi everyone, I am writing from the strewnfield of the newest meteorite fall on Earth, aproaching 36 hours old right now. Not many people know about it, but I do, I am here now. I wonder if it will be public soon? It seems that only me and a very small handfull of people know about it even though it is in the USA. I was hunting with several famous meteorite hunters all day today and will be again monday. More info from me when I decide to let the other so-called meteorite hunters in on the secret or it breaks on the list. Anyway, lots of fun from the strewnfields. Mike Farmer Beautiful fireball videos of this one. Please do not call me until I write the list back, I am really busy. this will likely be the only email for a day or two, as you all know, this is a busy time at the beginning of a new fall. __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

It wasn't the brightest fireball I've ever seen, but it was by FAR the most spectacular. I've submitted a fireball report, as have some other members of my local astronomy club. If anyone can give me any additional details of reports, I'd love to hear them. We were approximately 60 miles north-northeast of Little Rock at 9:54pm Central time. I was driving my car following my wife home. We were fortunately headed south going uphill--which gave us a perfect view of the whole event. A bright, baby blue glow lit up the trees to my right and I immediately knew there was a fireball somewhere. It came overhead and washed out the rest of the sky with its -9 or -10 brightness. The velocity (in degrees/second) actually seemed to increase as it traveled. It originated from the north-northwest, and its direction was almost due south. At an angle of about 40 deg. to the ground, the color rapidly changed to a bright yellow and then to light red. Then it fragmented and dimmed to almost nothing. As it reached 25 deg. altitude, it flashed into a bright yellow terminal burst perhaps -12 or brighter. Just gorgeous! I've never seen one that colorful before. I was quite interested in a friend's report of a 3-second sonic boom! I figured with a flash that bright there would probably be sound sound, so I rushed home and jumped out of the car to hear it--which I never did. He says he heard it only 1 minute after the flash which would mean it was fairly close (~12 miles). This would put it well within our inner atmosphere and should mean a scattering of meteorites. Now if we can only find someone from OK or TX and someone from MS to accurately let us triangulate... :o) Just wishful thinking. [ed.
