[meteorite-list] Sonic Boom in England?

2004-09-22 Thread Ron Baalke

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/wales/north_east/3679238.stm

Sonic boom theory for 'explosion'
BBC News
September 22, 2004

A loud explosion which sent residents running for cover has been heard
in Wales for the second time in less than a week.

Windows and homes shook in areas of Denbighshire and Conwy at around
17.50BST on Tuesday.

North Wales Police received calls from worried residents who thought
there had been an earthquake.

Last week people living in Llandrindod Wells in Powys reported a similar
incident.

An official from the British Geological Survey in Edinburgh said the
signal they had picked up from both reports was consistent with being of
sonic origin rather than an earthquake - possibly from an aircraft over
the sea.

I ran out of the house with my husband and we thought the explosion
store in the quarry had blown
Sue Coleman

The loud bang was heard from Rhyl in the east to Conwy in the west, and
several miles inland from Abergele.

Chris Roberts from Prestatyn said she had been out walking her dog when
she heard the explosion.

My poor dog nearly jumped out of his skin, she said.

I was walking the dog at about 10 to six and I heard this almighty boom.

It was loud and I wondered if there'd been an accident.

Sue Coleman lives a few miles away near Llysfaen quarry in Colwyn Bay,
she said the noise was so loud she thought the quarry had exploded.

Everyday we have explosions at the quarry but this was the biggest
explosion I have ever heard, she said.

Sonic boom

I ran out of the house with my husband and we thought the explosion
store in the quarry had blown.

The house shook worse than I've ever known, she added.

Glenn Ford, a seismologist with the British Geological Survey in
Edinburgh, said they had had no signals consistent with an earthquake
in the area.

The small earthquakes are very similar to effects observed by sonic
booms, he said.

It could have been caused by an aircraft, they can do fast turns and
the wing can go supersonic, he added.

However, Lois Demack said she regularly attends air shows and the noise
did not sound like a sonic boom to her.

I was visiting a doctor's in Meliden and there was a big bang...I was
expecting the mountain to come down behind us, she said.

I go to air shows so I didn't think it was a sonic boom, she added.

[meteorite-list] Mysterious Boom Shakes South Carolina Homes

2004-09-22 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.charleston.net/stories/092204/loc_22boom.shtml

Unknown noise shakes James Island homes
BY STEVE REEVES
The Post and Courier (South Carolina)
September 22, 2004

The cause of a mysterious boom that rattled windows and shook houses on
James Island late Tuesday morning remains unknown.

Dozens of people called authorities about 10:30 a.m. when the sound
reverberated across James Island.

Officers were dispatched to determine whether the source of the noise
might have been some sort of explosion, but the investigation turned up
no clues.

We still don't know what it was, Charleston Police spokesman Charles
Francis said.

No severe weather was in the area at the time of the booming sound, and
no earthquake activity was reported in the Lowcountry.

Some people speculated that the sound was a sonic boom, perhaps caused
by a military jet on a training mission.

But military officials at the Charleston Air Force Base said no planes
flying from that facility at the time of the noise would have made a
sonic boom, which requires a plane to travel at more than 700 mph to
break the sound barrier.

Other nearby military facilities, such as the Marine Corps Air Station
in Beaufort, also said their aircraft weren't responsible.

A spokesman for the FAA in Atlanta said no civilian aircraft would have
produced a sonic boom.

A similar sound rocked the Lowcountry in August 2003. No cause was ever
found, though some opined that it could have been Seneca Guns, a folk
explanation used to describe unexplained booms dating back to the
18th-century.

Some theorize that so-called Seneca Guns could be caused by gases being
released from the ocean floor or a sudden rush of cold air hitting the
Gulf Stream.

Re: [meteorite-list] Mysterious Boom Shakes South Carolina Homes

2004-09-22 Thread VeIocity
I'm surprised that nobody in South Carolina offered a seismic explanation for the
booming and house-rattling. It's not widely publicized, but South Carolina is the
most likely site in the country for a catastrophic earthquake (forget California).
Charleston has been flattened a couple of times in the last 200 years by big quakes,
and the Seismic Survey has determined that there's sufficient tectonic stress right
now for another really big one.

[meteorite-list] Seymchan and Suizhou sale

2004-09-22 Thread Michael Farmer
Hello everyone, I have just listed on my website some new pieces of Suizhou
that I got from a scientist in China, pristine fragments picked up the day
they fell.
I also have some small etched pieces of the new Seymchan (IIE)
iron/Pallasite from Russia.
I bought 6 kilos of it and cut up a few of the very small individuals.
I have etched them and some are just iron, some are silicated, very nice
small pieces. I have sent out the large specimens for cutting, and will have
2.5 mm slices in a couple weeks. I am off to Panama on Friday, so email me
ASAP for any of these pieces.
