[meteorite-list] Mars Exploration Rover Update - September 29, 2004

2004-09-30 Thread Ron Baalke

http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status.html

SPIRIT UPDATE: Spirit back to normal operations - sol 243-262,
September 29, 2004

Spirit has successfully transitioned back to normal operations from
conjunction operations, when Mars and Earth were on opposite sides of
the Sun. During conjunction (sols 244 through 255), engineers and
scientists did not attempt normal operations due to the low probability
of successful communications. From sols 244 to 249, the rover team did
transmit several no operation commands to test the communications
link. On Spirit's sol 249, Opportunity experienced an unexpected
software reset, apparently triggered by a corrupted no operation
command. As a result of that problem, engineers ceased all commanding on
Spirit from sol 250 until sol 256, at which time the likelihood of
receiving corrupted commands was once again very low.

From sols 244 through 255, pre-loaded sequences performed daily science,
which included atmospheric studies (using the miniature thermal emission
spectrometer and the panoramic camera) and Mössbauer spectrometer
integration on the filter magnet, which is one of two dust-collecting
magnets on Spirit's main deck. Spirit relayed data to the Mars Odyssey
orbiter every afternoon throughout conjunction. Odyssey in turn
attempted to relay that data back to Earth with limited success due to
solar conjunction. As a result of the difficulties getting data off of
the rover, the memory available for science data storage shrunk to
roughly 100 megabits by sol 261, but has recovered as of sol 262 to
roughly 400 megabits.

Sol highlights:

Sol 243 was the last sol of normal commanding for Spirit before
conjunction. The rover team successfully re-transmitted four conjunction
sequences that had not made it on-board during the sol 242 uplink. The
team saw no transmission errors (but commanded everything twice just in
case), and the rovers performed the commanded remote sensing science.

On sol 244, the rover team transitioned into conjunction operations and
did the first no-op commanding tests during midday to see how
effective the command link was as Mars moved further behind the Sun. The
team received data from the Odyssey orbiter indicating that Spirit was
healthy and proceeding normally with on-board conjunction sequences.

Sols 245 through 255 were the solar conjunction quiet period. No
commanding was done. Spirit automatically took daily atmospheric science
measurements and made filter magnet observations with the Mössbauer
spectrometer.

During sols 256 through 257, Spirit took 48 more hours of Mössbauer
observations on the filter magnet. A dirt clod from a previous Mössbauer
soil touch was inadvertently placed on the perimeter of the filter
magnet on sol 240. As a result, engineers believed this could have been
the rover team's last best chance to collect Mössbauer data on the
uncontaminated dust sample from that magnet. This is because when the
Mössbauer instrument was removed, there was a chance that dirt from the
clod would sprinkle or spread to the center area of the magnet.

On sol 258, the team removed the Mössbauer instrument from the filter
magnet and took microscopic images of the both magnets. From the image
thumbnails, the team could see that some dirt from the clod was indeed
deposited on the outer area of the filter magnet. Front hazard-avoidance
camera images taken after the Mössbauer spectrometer was removed clearly
showed dirt still attached to the Mössbauer contact plate.

After finishing with the magnets, engineers moved the rover arm back
down to the soil, to the same spot that had been touched by the
Mössbauer instrument on sol 240. The rover team then repeated a
microscopic imager sequence of that soil to see if winds had deposited
anything there during conjunction. The team then centered the alpha
particle X-ray spectrometer on the same soil and started an integration
later that night.

On sol 259, Spirit changed tools to the Mössbauer spectrometer and
started a 24-hour integration on the same disturbed soil spot. Spirit
also started a three-sol thermal investigation, using panoramic camera
and miniature thermal emission spectrometer observations of soil targets
several times during each sol.

On sol 260, Spirit completed the Mössbauer integration of the disturbed
soil.

On sol 261, Spirit stowed its arm then drove backwards 1.5 meters (4.9
feet) to take post-conjunction panoramic camera pictures of the soil
underneath the rover as part of the conjunction wind experiment. Spirit
also took navigation camera images of the road ahead in preparation for
future drives.

On sol 262, due to the limited amount of available science data storage,
planned activities were limited to a Mössbauer spectrometer integration
on a rock, limited remote sensing, and routine atmospheric observations.
That plan did not make it on board due to a problem during the
communications uplink session. The deep space network antenna was
pointed a few degrees below its

Steve, when I buy two items from you and you just send me one, I get a
little bit disturbed. When I tell you that one is missing and you tell
me you sent both, although my girl friend has seen me unpacking your
mail and finding just one piece, I get more disturbed. But when you then
ignore all my emails that ask you to resolve that matter, I get angry.
And I am very angry now.

It's not about the loss of $20 for me. It's about lack of character,
betrayal and a CONTINUED story of playing foul.

May I remind you of the tricks you played with your sale lately? When
you offered bigger and bigger discounts, but at the same time raised
base prices so the items became more expensive in reality? You ducked
and covered when I found out your malpractice. You can't duck and cover
now.

Steve, either send me the missing NWA 067, refund my money or lose one
of your few remaining friends. It's up to you. Choose wisely.

Bernhard

[meteorite-list] Genesis Mission Status Report - September 30, 2004

News Release: 2004-245 September 30, 2004

Genesis Mission Status Report

The Genesis team is preparing to ship its samples of the Sun from the
mission's temporary cleanroom at the U.S. Army Proving Ground, Dugway,
Utah, to NASA's Johnson Space Center, Houston.

We have essentially completed the recovery and documentation process
and now are in the business of preparing everything for transport,
said Eileen Stansbery, Johnson Space Center assistant director of
astromaterials research and exploration science. We still have a way
to go before we can quantify our recovery of the solar sample. I can
tell you we have come a long way from September 8, and things are
looking very, very good.

A major milestone in the process was the recovery of the Genesis
mission's four separate segments of the concentrator target. Designed
to measure the isotopic ratios of oxygen and nitrogen, the segments
contain within their structure the samples that are the mission's most
important science goal.

Retrieving the concentrator target was our number one priority,
Stansbery said. When I first saw three of the four target segments
were intact, and the fourth was mostly intact, my heart leapt. Inside
those segments are three years of the solar samples, which to the
scientific community, means eons worth of history of the birth of our
solar system. I saw those, and I knew we had just overcome a major
hurdle.

Other milestones in the recovery process included the discovery that
the gold foil collector was undamaged and in excellent condition. The
gold foil, which is expected to contain almost a million billion atoms
of solar wind, was considered the number two priority for science
recovery. The polished aluminum collector was misshapen by the impact.
However, it is intact and expected to also yield secrets about the
Sun. Another occurred when the cleanroom team disassembled the
collector arrays. They revealed, among large amounts of useable array
material, some almost whole sapphire and coated sapphire collectors
and a metallic glass collector.

Packing solar samples for transport is a little different than packing
a house-worth of belongings for a cross-country move. After the
meticulous process of inspection and documentation, each segment of
collector gets its own ID number, photograph and carrying case. The
samples and shipping containers fill the space of about two full size
refrigerators. The Genesis material will probably move to the Johnson
Space Center within the next week.

If you had told me September 8 that we would be ready to move Genesis
samples to Houston within the month I would have replied, 'no way,'
said Genesis Project Manager Don Sweetnam of NASA's Jet Propulsion
Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. But here we are, with an opportunity to
fulfill our major science objectives. It is a great day for Genesis,
and I expect many more to come.

Bernhard,
Welcome to the Wide Wacky World of Steve (Captain Chicago) Arnold
and his goofy meteorite antics.
If you will continue emailing him requesting either a clarification of
one of
his dippy sales offers, or (as in your case) for him to comply with the
assumed
commitment for him to actually send to you everything that was bought -
then-
eventually you can expect an email from him that will ask Why are you
picking
on me? And that, my friend, will be the last you are likely to hear
from him.

Sorry you had to learn about the true character of good ole Steve the
hard way.

Café Soleil
Where: Markušovského 509, Štrba
When: Monday-Sunday 16:00-24:00
Reservations: No
English menu:Yes
Contact: (Božena Neuhausová) 0903/619-959

TUCKED AWAY under the foothills of the majestic High
Tatras lies the village of Štrba. Blink your eyes and
you'll probably miss it. Rest up awhile and you are
quite likely to come across the tiny Café Soleil. From
the outside there seems nothing remarkable about the
place, or anything particularly different from many
other Slovak hostelries. That is, until you enter.
What is immediately apparent is the rather peculiar
atmosphere it conjures, derived from a sort of visual
disorientation. Then as your eyes become accustomed to
the surroundings, you begin to see why. The place is a
clutter of oddly interesting objects. And none less so
than its owner Friedrich W Neuhaus. Originally from
Germany Herr Neuhaus is a collector, or more to the
point, a hoarder with a penchant for historical
artefacts and anything that falls out of the sky.
Everything in his cafe, from an 83-year-old mineral
water bottle, to his prized chunk of meteorite,
provides a constant talking point among the curious
locals, and anyone else who happens to stray inside.

Neuhaus arrived in Slovakia by chance. Being a keen
hunter his original plan was to go on an expedition in
deepest Africa, but fate intervened and he was
sidetracked to Czechoslovakia.

At first I was scared about coming to a communist
country, but soon found the people very nice and
hospitable, he said.

So taken was he with the Slovaks that he eventually
married one, and off they went to start their married
life in Germany. But after a couple of years in his
homeland they decided to return to Slovakia, bringing
with them the Neuhaus collection of rare artefacts.
They set up home under the Tatras and two years ago,
in keeping with his wife's family background, they
bought the Café Soleil.

I come from a gastronomic family, Božena Neuhausová
explained. My grandpa built a tavern and pension in
Štrba during World War II that was the first of its
kind in the region. Even though I studied languages, I
have always been inclined towards gastronomy. But the
café was built and furnished by my husband, it's all
his work.

And her spouse is extremely proud of his collection of
rare oddities. Each article has its own unique value.
It's hard to tell which one is the most precious, he
said, adding that one item in particular generates the
most curiosity among his customers - his cosmic rock.
The 100-kilogram meteorite, almost half a metre in
diameter, was found in the Westerwald region of
Germany in 1930.

When my family were working in their fields they
ploughed up this weird stone. At first glance it was
immediately different than other stones, recounted
Neuhaus. They analysed it at the Justus Liebig
University in Gießen and proved that it really was a
rock from outer space. It's a mixture of various
metals, that's why it is so heavy. And it is black
because it got burned when entering the earth's
atmosphere.

The meteorite happens to be allegedly invested with
other metaphysical properties - luck.

We get locals and foreigners who come here, and they
all want to touch the meteorite for luck. We also
touched it, and everything worked out well,
proclaimed the happy couple.

Elsewhere in the café his other numerous earthly
objects attract much attention, ranging from a
pre-historical carving tool to an early radio.
Alongside ancient Celtic receptacles there is a 19th
century tin cup with a glass base through which
mariners used to spy on their mistresses. A measuring
decanter from the Austro-Hungarian period looks
decidedly out of place next to a set of slave's
manacles.

Patrons can also donate their own possessions to the
café providing they meet with the proprietors'
approval. It has to be interesting, curious and old.
I have newer things too, but these are not attractive
because they lack any story or history, Neuhaus said
with the air of a museum custodian.

[meteorite-list] Two Slow moving meteors over NE Pennsylvania

2004-09-30 Thread E. L. Jones
Any de-orbit/decay expected tonight Sep 30, 2004 over Eastern North America?
Perhaps there is a swarm in orbit-- both fireballs were very similar in
look and trajectory.

Interesting greenish color, low incandescant fireballs tonight at 8:21
and 8:27 Observed along Rt 209 in Carbon County Pennsylvania. They
were slow moving, falling east to west. The first one glowed on two
spots on the body itself after the fireball extinguished. This glow
remained visible for almost as long as the fireball portion of flight.
The observations were about 4-5 miles apart along the east west
roadway. Didn't hear any sonic booms.

(yeah ok ok I'll get around to a fireball report in time) I am
announcing this now in the event that there is a stream and someone else
gets to checkout their section of the sky.

Regards,
Elton
