RE: [meteorite-list] large, radioactive ebay brahins from chenobyl area

2004-10-22 Thread mark ford

Harlan,

Ive often wondered about this too!

If someone has measured an 'increase over background' then clearly the potential at
least exists for a serious health issue..

I am an engineer in the nuclear industry, so I have access to Geiger counters and
MCA's etc and I have extensively checked my Brahin but found no abnormal
contamination, but that's not to say it isn't a potential issue.

As far as I know the Brahin strewn field extends reasonably far into the restricted
zone, much of the land has never been surveyed, so the levels are unknown, I doubt
much contamination would have penetrated deep into the metal, more likely most danger
would be from any residual surface soil/moisture, that is still on the outer surface
of the metal.

What would worry me more is the workshops that are cutting the stuff, airborne
radioactive dust being an even more serious issue!

Just goes to show, every home should have a Geiger counter imho...

In fact I'm glad, that I still found some places in a nearby location

Pampa(c), free field and a new errected city quarter, which isn't ready yet,

Next year I can plan it better and earlier. Perhaps it's a good idea then to

[meteorite-list] A 6 kg DIOGENITE TO FUND NEXT WINTER EXPEDITIONS !

2004-10-22 Thread Michel Franco
Dear List (s),

After several years prospecting, I need to try to stabilize my balance and I
have decided that I should take off my collection a museum quality
meteorite, in order to fund my next winter expeditions in the Sahara and to
feed my family. One of my nicest pieces is probably the meteorite I am
offering today.

It will be the center piece of many meteorite collection.
It happened that last year I recovered a massive 6.760 kg achondrite in the
Sahara. When I first saw it, I already thought: my God, a big DIO!.

It is a very compact meteorite less fragile than average diogenites. It
shows a well preserved fusion crust with regmaglypts and flow lines, primary
and secondary crust. ( see photos). Where the crust is gone, say on half of
the meteorite surface, ( achondrite crusts are very fragile) very impressive
centimetric wide light green pyroxene cristals are present. ( see photos)

Since I brought it back, this meteorite has been examined by several
specialists and first MEB analyses has shown that this achondrite is at
least a Diogenite, confirming my guesses. Investigations should had been
finished by this fall but more material was requested to fullfill the
knowledge of this Diogenite. Isotope Oxygene ratios are not known today.

But the best prospecting season approaches and I really need to fly to the
bare and dry desert sands.

That 's why I am offering this master piece for sale today.

Photos can be seen on http://www.caillou-noir.com/Molay.htm

Serious proposals welcome off list.

I will go to Munich Show ( 29/31 nov) and can bring it with me if the case
occurs. Even if it is not sold, I have stiil some for beer ( I should
write Euros but I have not the font in my computer )

Thank you for having read this message. If you are not a potential buyer,
please have look. It deserves a the visit.

AW: AW: [meteorite-list] There are no silly questions? Wait until youhaveread that :-)

2004-10-22 Thread Jörn Koblitz
Dear Eric,

A good question which I don't have an answer to. In terms of orbital evolution and
probabilities to be catched up the larger solar system bodies, I do not se a reason,
why iron meteoroids shall survive longer than stony meteoroids. May be, the
differences in CRE ages are a result of cosmic-ray shielding effects. Does someone
else has a good idea to explain these differences?

Cheers,
Jörn / MetBase

If all ungrouped iron meteorites are derived from the cores
 of differentiated
 bodies, the question is:
where is all the crust gone? Why don't we have many more (at
 least 92) different
types of achondrites in our meteorite collections?

From Mittlefehldt et al, chapter 4 p4-15 Planetary
Materials Reviews in Mineralogy Vol 36

cosmic ray exposure ages of iron meteorites are typically in
the range of 200 to 1000 Ma, some 5 to 50 times longer than
typical for stony meteorites. Tight clusters in exposure
ages for groups IIIAB and IVA suggest discrete breakup events
 for their parent bodies 650 +/- 75 and 420 +/- 70 Ma ago,
respectively (Voshage and Feldmann 1979). No other clusters
have been observed. The highest 41K/40K exposure age
measured for an iron meteorite is 2.3 Ga, or half the age of
the solar system, for the ungrouped Deep Springs iron.

The longest CRE exposure age I know of for a non-iron is
Soko-Banja at 71.1 Ma although there may be others I don't
know of. This does exclude lunars which do have CRE ages of
 up to a billion years.
So if the non-irons are swept clean in 100,000 years or
less and the irons hang around for a up to a billion or more
that would explain why we see more variety in iron parent bodies.

[meteorite-list] NPA 01-15-1970 Scientists Agog over (Lost City) Meteorite

Paper: News Journal
City: Mansfield, Ohio
Date: Thursday, January 15, 1970

Scientists Agog over Meteorite
By VICTOR COHN
WASHINGTON (PTS) Space watchers have rushed to Washington for study of
what a Aeronautics and Space Administration official calls the freshest
meteorite ever examined.
Studying a meteorite quickly is especially important to biologists,
looking for chemical forms that might reveal the beginning of life elsewhere
in the solar system. Meteorites lying on the ground quickly become
contaminated by earthly molecules.
The new meteorite was spotted falling in the mid west sky Jan. 3 by
some of the 16 automatic telescopes of the seven-state Prairie Network, a
joint NASA-Smithsonian astrophysical observatory operation.
Six days later the remnant of the Jan, 3 falling star was found near
Lost City, Okla. - the first ever found by the network though thousands have
been photographed.
It weighs 22.6 pounds and is said to be slightly magnetic. Eight
billion meteors strike the earth's atmosphere everyday, but all but five to
10 burn out before reaching the ground. And only a few of these are
discovered, usually too late for some kinds of study.
The Prairie Network was established in 1962 and started operating in
1964, both to photograph meteorites and to try to find them.
Its telescopes operate nightly in Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Missouri,
Nebraska, Oklahoma and South Dakota. Operations are directed from the
astrophysical laboratory's Cambridge, Mass. headquarters.

Meteorite Fragments Fall On Oklahoma
WASHINGTON (UPI) - Excited scientist Wednesday were studying a 21.6
pound star which fell in Oklahoma 11 days ago for clues to the creation of
the planets and perhaps of the universe itself.
The star a stony meteorite, was the first ever found soon after its
fall as the result of a deliberate attempt by man to plot the impact point
of a visitor from space with photographs.
Even so, recovery of the meteorite was described as a fantastic event
for which exceedingly lucky would be weak understatement. Had the space
rock bounced a small distance from where it was found, it might never have
been discovered.
Scientists concerned with how the solar system and its planets came
into being are eager to get hold of meteorites as soon as possible after
they land.
This is because radioactivity induced in these fragments of space
debris by millions of years of exposure to cosmic rays, which may be clues
to how the universe was created, quickly fades after a meteorite plunges
through the protective blanket of the earth's atmosphere.
It was the first dramatic triumph of the Prairie Network, a system of
16 automatic camera stations operated since 1964 in seven Midwestern states
by the Smithsonian Institution's Astrophysical Observatory (SAO),
Cambridge, Mass., under a grant from the National Aeronautics and Space
Administration (NASA).

[meteorite-list] NPA 01-16-1970 Freshly-fallen (Lost City) meteorite found by US scientists

2004-10-22 Thread MARK BOSTICK
Paper: Daily Gleaner
City: Kingston, Surrey, Jamaica
Date: Friday, January 16, 1970
Page: 11
Freshly-fallen meteorite found by US scientists
WASHINGTON, January 14, (Reuters): American scientists today proudly
displayed a meteorite that they said could prove as scientifically valuable
as moon samples brought back by Apollo astronauts.
The 22-pound lump of grey rock was found on a snowy cart track in
Oklahoma last week after automatic cameras picked up its fiery trail through
the earth's atmosphere.
It is the first meteorite, the name given to a fallen meteor, whose
orbit is accurately known and which has been recovered promptly after it
crashed to earth, scientists said.
With the aid of 16 unmanned tracking stations scattered across the
mid-western states, American scientists have been trying for five years to
pinpoint a meteorite's landing so that the object can be recovered and
examined before becoming contaminated by earth's molecules. Until this
month, all efforts failed.
The meteorite, about the size of a volley ball, came down January 3.
Within a few days it was calculated that impact occurred in an area half a
mile across near the tiny community of Lost City, Okla.

Hysterical
The man who recovered the rock January 9, was Gunther Schwartz, project
field manager, who had gone to Lost City to gather information from anyone
who saw the falling star.
Schwartz told a Press conference, I was driving along a dirt track
when I suddenly saw it in the road. I was hysterical, I couldn't believe my
luck.
Scientists now have begun preliminary examination of the meteorite
which came from beyond Mars.
Meteorites have been examined sooner after falling to earth - for
instance, after crashing into a building. But Dr. Richard McCrosky scientist
in charge of the project, said What is unique about this is we know the
orbit. There is only one other case where this was so, and that meteorite
was not analyzed early.
Scientists wanted what they call a fresh meteorite for analysis of
radioactivity caused by cosmic ray bombardment during the trip through
space.
There radioactive fingerprints provide valuable clues to the
composition and history of the universe, officials explained.
The rock could even give a clue to whether life exists elsewhere in the
universe, the officials added. Since the meteorite has only just fallen to
earth, it has probably not had time to become contaminated.

[meteorite-list] NPA 04-25-1970 (Lost City) Meteorite Provided New Information About Space

2004-10-22 Thread MARK BOSTICK
Paper: Daily Gleaner
City: Kingston, Surrey, Jamaica
Date: Saturday, April 25, 1970
Page: 11
Meteorite provides new information about space
WASHINGTON, April 24 (AP): Scientists reported that a 35-pound
meteorite that fell near Lost City, Okla., last January has provided
valuable new information about space.
They said it has yielded the firmest evidence yet concerning the
intensity of cosmic rays far beyond the sun - raising the possibility that
manned spaceshopes venturing to planets beyond Mars might have to be
armoured against swarms of high-energy space bullets.
Come from beyond Mars, the meteorite struck the earth in three pieces,
the largest about 20 pounds.
It is estimated to have weighed about 500 pounds originally, and is
presumed to have been a fragment of an explosive collision between two huge
objects some six million years ago. This theory, the scientists said, comes
from calculations of the object's exposure to cosmic rays.

Accuracy
The meteorite was found by one of the scientists on a snow-covered road
outside Lost City on January 10, six days after it reportedly flashed rather
spectacularly as a fireball streaming down through the winder atmosphere.
It is the first meteorite in history for which the original orbit in
space - and trajectory to the earth - has been computed with high accuracy.
Indeed it is only the second much meteorite for which even an estimated
orbital and trajectory cmputation has been possible.
This is so because it is the first to have been photographed in flight
by a special American meteor-tracking network set up only a few years ago.
The only other recovered meteorite that was photographed in flight was one
that fell in Czechoslovakia in 1959, but scientists said this was an
accidental sighting using cameras designedfor another purpose. And they
said that meteorite's pathway to the earth is still uncertain.
Scientists of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory have calculated
that the meteorite whissed earthward from an orbit some 65 million miles
beyond the planet Mars. Dr. Philip J. Cressey of the Goddard Spaceflight
Centre, Greenbelt, Md., chairman of the session told a newsman:
It's a known space probe...we know exactly its trajectory through the
earth's atmosphere and we have a good orbit on where it came from. And
right now, we do not have any earth-launched space probe that has gone
beyond the orbit of Mars.

Meteorites Returns For Oklahoma Tours, Exhibitions
WASHINGTON (AP) - The meteorite that made Lost City, Okla., famous in
January will return to Oklahoma this summer and autumn for a series of
exhibits, the head of the Smithsonian Institution said Tuesday.
Roy Clark also confirmed that a fourth fragment had been found on a
farm near the tiny Delaware County community, and that the institution has
arranged to examine it.
He said one of the fragments and information scientists have gleaned
from it will be sent within the next two weeks to Oklahoma Science and Arts
Foundation in Oklahoma City. No date has been set for the display.
The meteorite lighted up much of Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri and
Kansas when it fell on Jan. 3 and it was photographed by a nationwide
tracking system of cameras. The meteorite became the first in history to be
tracked so completely.
Analysis of the photographs permitted scientists to pinpoint its origin
several million miles beyond Mars, the first time in history for such close
tracking.
Clark said the latest fragment was located on a farm owned by Marvin

RE: [meteorite-list] large, radioactive ebay brahins from chenobyl area

2004-10-22 Thread JKGwilliam
List,
I suppose it was just a matter of time before radiation contaminated Brahin
started showing up on the market.

Several years ago, I talked with Ivan K. about the issues concerning the
Brahin strewn field including its overlapping the Chernobyl contamination
site. According to Ivan, there are large, highly visible monuments
surrounding the restricted area making it quite impossible for a meteorite
hunter to wander into the area by accident. Anyone who spent much time
inside this area would have to be a fool or desperate for money. Reputable
meteorite hunters would never knowingly sell contaminated meteorites.

And to further complicate the matter, this same area was the site of a
huge Russian/German battle(s) during World War II and a local cottage
industry exists where buried soldiers are located and repatriated to their
respective countries. If my memory is correct, the German government was
paying the equivalent of $200 apiece for the remains of their soldiers,
which makes detecting and digging in the restricted area a big temptation.

It could be possible that some of these folks are finding pieces of the
Brahin meteorite and finding a buyer for them. After all, who's going to
pass up the opportunity to make several hundreds, even thousands, of
dollars when the average monthly income in Russia is about $200.00?

I'm guessing that the only thing that's preventing more of the contaminated
Brahin from showing up on the meteorite market is the current price. If
this pallasite was still selling for $8.00 to $12.00 per gram, a lot of it
would be making its way to the collectors market.

Best,
JKGwilliam

[meteorite-list] Watery mail

2004-10-22 Thread bernd . pauli
Well, why watery? My four meteorite specimens from Mike Farmer
arrived today. Although I haven't had much time yet to welcome them,
I must say that what I saw knocked my socks off and made my mouth
water. That's why this mail may be a little watery :-)

The two Soledade specimens (#9 and #12) are breathtaking and one
look under the microscope assured me that Soledade does *in no way*
look like Odessa.

Number three is the thoroughly recrystallized NWA 2092 with absolutely
fresh, thick, black fusion crust (specimen #11) and an awesome light-
colored matrix with no chondrules visible - a real eye-catcher!

And, a roll of drums, please, ... Mike's new ureilite, Dhofar 979. The pics
on his website just don't do this gorgeous beauty justice. It is far more
beautiful when viewed under the microscope - golden, almost translucent
olivines (as if you were looking at Esquel crystals) and abundant finely
disseminated metallic particles ... something to die for. No, it is not a
pallasite - the numerous 120° triple junctions attest to it being a ureilite.

Best wishes,

Bernd

[meteorite-list] A Nininger Moment #23

2004-10-22 Thread almitt
Not All Of Nininger Hunts Are Smooth
The Trip To Loreto, Baja California

Often turning his travels, letters from various people, and talking
to farmers, ranchers and many other sources, Nininger would run
into stories about where a meteorite was thought to exist if he
would only go and check it out. Early on he often would make
special effort to check out such stories but in his later years of
experience, he would often ask questions and catalog an area
to investigate when it sounded reasonable. Such was the case
of the Loreto Meteorite which was mentioned to Nininger by
a oil man John B. Quinn.

Two years after hearing about a 150 lb meteorite that laid in a
man's yard, Nininger and Addie his wife made a trip down to
Guaymas on the Mexican mainland and from there Nininger
would fly across to the Baja peninsula to Santa Rosalia. The
trip to Loreto he was assisted by Quinn's friend a superintendent
of a large cooper mine named Peter Mahieux. On the commute
by cargo plane to Santa Rosalia, Nininger and Mr. Mahieux had
time to talk and Mahieux himself had a small meteorite he gave to
Nininger as a gift which turned up to be the Pallasite variety from
the village of Ignacio

The following day Mr. Mahieux drove Nininger by truck, 20 miles
south to where a young Mexican maintain a machine shop. The
young man had been employed by the cooper mine in the past but
had been let go which Nininger would be told of later. The young
man had been a pilot flying the plane they had flew on to commute
from the peninsula to the mainland. Mr. Mahieux explained to
Nininger that he would be flown in a plane that the young Mexican
had built himself out of crashed airplanes and auto parts but he
was the best pilot Mr. Mahieux knew. Nininger expressed concern
over this but because Mr. Mahieux had gone so far out of his way
and assured Nininger of the young Mexican's qualifications, Nininger
accepted his hosts words.

On inquiring about why the young man had been let go Mr. Mahieux
told Nininger that the young Mexican had on several occasions
played a very disturbing trick with the passengers he flew. He
would take off with a group of people then when out in the middle
of the 100 mile wide gulf he would topple over and pretend to be
unconscious, until all the passengers were all near hysterics. The
young Mexican seem to derive great fun from this activity. It would
be this young man and Nininger who would fly to Loreto along with
a retired navy captain and a young geologist who accompanied them
on other business.

The trip down was uneventful and upon arrival Nininger contacted
a padre who spoke some broken english and helped him to contact
one of Mahieux former employees who guided Nininger to a Senor
Davis, whose yard the meteorite rested. It was a true meteorite
and was heavier than Nininger had been told, weighing out at
209 lbs. A price was reached and arrangements were made to
ship the large meteorite back to Nininger's home. Nininger soon
returned to the flying field at a time that was agreed upon by the
parties flying back. All were there except for the pilot who was
last seen in a bar about an hour ago. After many uncomplimentary
comments about the pilot, the group went and retrieved the young
Mexican from the bar and they noted he seemed to be in fair shape.
He was taken to lunch an only allowed to drink coffee.

After the lunch the group went back promptly to the plane where
the young Mexican took off without a hitch. While in the air he
instructed the geologist to take over the wheel while he rolled
himself a cigarette. The geologist refused and the young Mexican
simply shifted the wheel over to him. Nininger and the navy captain
had a good view of the back of the geologists head and neck,
noting that the neck had turned beet red. Nininger stated that he
had never so strongly wanted to hit a man over the head as he
did the young Mexican but as he told the navy captain, what good
would that do? Mean while while the plane wavered, the young
Mexican leaned back and enjoyed the cigarette he had rolled,
reaching over to right the plane at the hand of the protesting
geologist. Nininger stated that the flight was only 35 or 40 minutes
but the three passengers during the flight lived as many days. Upon
arrival a perfect landing was made but none of the passengers felt
incline to thank their young pilot.

The Loreto meteorite was said to have been found from the
site in the mountains about 6 hours ride by mules from the
nearest ranch on the gulf shore. It was also told that a larger
iron, too heavy to move was also at that site. Nininger said
that from the Loreto specimen he bought, it was obvious that
it had been torn from a larger mass and that the story of a
larger mass seem to make sense. Enough sense that later in
1964 and 1965 that Nininger tried to track down the larger
mass of Loreto. As with other meteorite hunts, the larger
mass was never located. Nininger felt that someday maybe
erosion or someone knowledgeable would
