[meteorite-list] Slow list, time for study, planning new season and zones of suspect meteorite locations.

2004-12-30 Thread David Freeman
Dear List;
During these times of slow list correspondence, and during times of
heavy rains and snows in the western deserts of the U.S., this would be
an excellent time to be gathering information, making plans for the
rapidly approaching meteorite recovery season.
The states of California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado,
Oregon, Washington have been receiving rains and snows that will alter
the surfaces of playa lakes, errosional zones of possible investigation,
former strewnfields with new errosional effects, sand dunes, all those
places you wanted to hunt but didn't have time to investigate with your
pre trip field home work last season.
Maps, GPS numbers coordinated on your maps, compass check and
starting/adding to your field log book, order up your new scale cubes to
replace the ones you misplaced~left next to test rocks, service that
field expedition vehicle, study topo maps of places to try ones luck at.

BLMBureau of Land Management, Department of the Interior has for
most areas of the public lands in the west, maps that show surface
contour, vegetation status, soils types (this one is very handy), a
wealth of information can be hand for minimal charge. Now's the time to
contact the BLM for your research maps BEFORE you head afield. State
BLM offices can be google searched and there is a BLM link by going to
my mjwy ebay about me page, searching for the chamber of commerce
link for Rock Springs and there is a link there for the Wyoming BLM and
can be probed for other western states' BLM offices for information.

For those of you in other climes, the opportunity to drive around and
visit with farmers and gain access now for spring field trips to private
lands is at hand. Farmers tend to be easier to make contact with as this
is their slower season and they may be found near the dwellings rather
than in the back 40 with a tractor. Now is when they appreciate the
contact. Be sure to educate them to meteorites and your sincerity and
honesty before you start tramping around knocking down the crops and
chasing the livestock. County governments have plat maps that show land
ownership to make contact with land owners a little easier.

Plenty of research time now, especially those who aren't gearing up for
the big show coming up soon. For those lucky dogsthe rest of us
hope your lust for Tucson catches you behind when the Spring collecting
season starts up, you are all caught behind at gathering up your homework.
Hope the dog eats yours,
Best,
Dave Freeman

The report said most of the meteor had already been broken up and taken away

Now that sounds like a comment I could believe is about a real meteorite.

[meteorite-list] NASA Events Commemorate Rover Anniversary on Mars

2004-12-30 Thread Ron Baalke

Dolores Beasley
Headquarters, Washington Dec. 30, 2004
(Phone: 202/358-1753)

Guy Webster
Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif.
(Phone: 818/354-6278)

MEDIA ADVISORY: M04-213

NASA EVENTS COMMEMORATE ROVER ANNIVERSARY ON MARS

On Jan. 3, 2004, cheers erupted from mission control at NASA's Jet
Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), when the first robotic rover successfully
landed on Mars. Three weeks later, the second rover successfully landed
on the opposite side of Mars.

One year later rovers Spirit and Opportunity have exceeded all mission
expectations and continue to make discoveries. The goal of NASA's Mars
Exploration Rover (MER) mission was to explore for a minimum of 90 days
to search for evidence of past water activity.

One Year on Mars, a special two-hour live event to commemorate the
mission, will be presented at JPL on Monday, Jan. 3, 2005, from 2 p.m.
to 4 p.m. EST. The live event, along with additional taped programming
and live-shot opportunities, will be aired on NASA-TV.

At 2 p.m. EST, a news briefing will detail discoveries made in 2004,
and the rover's outlook for 2005. Panelists:

-- NASA Administrator Sean O'Keefe
-- Dr. Charles Elachi, Director, JPL
-- Jim Erickson, MER Project Manager, JPL
-- Dr. Steve Squyres, MER Principal Investigator, Cornell University,
   Ithaca, N.Y.
-- Dr. Firouz Naderi, MER Program Manager, JPL
-- Dr. Jim Garvin, Chief Scientist, NASA Headquarters, Washington.

At 3 p.m. EST, the MER team will present Mars Stories We've Never
Told. This 60-minute live program will feature members recounting
personal experiences of the past year. The program will end with the
cutting of a rover birthday cake.

Two additional rover programs will air on NASA TV on Monday. Twelve
Wheels on Mars airs at 1 p.m. EST. This 60-minute program features
professional storyteller Syd Lieberman, who spent several months with
the MER team. Two for Two a 20-minute program about the rovers airs
at 4 p.m. EST.

Live shot opportunities with Squyres are available from 4:20 to 7:00
p.m. EST. To book a window for a live shot, contact Jack Dawson at:
818/354-0040. News media must contact the JPL media relations' office
in advance at: 818/ 354-5011 to arrange access to events.

NASA TV is available on the Web and via satellite in the continental
U.S. on AMC-6, Transponder 9C, C-Band, at 72 degrees west longitude.
The frequency is 3880.0 MHz. Polarization is vertical, and audio is
monaural at 6.80 MHz. In Alaska and Hawaii, NASA TV is available on
AMC-7, Transponder 18C, C-Band, at 137 degrees west longitude. The
frequency is 4060.0 MHz. Polarization is vertical, and audio is
monaural at 6.80 MHz. For NASA TV information and schedules on the

[meteorite-list] Hayabusa's Ion Engines Achieve 20, 000 Hours of Operation

2004-12-30 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.isas.ac.jp/e/snews/2004/1209.shtml

HAYABUSA's ion engines achieved 20,000 hour Space Operation
Hitoshi Kuninaka
Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency
December 9, 2004

The microwave discharge ion engines onboard HAYABUSA asteroid
explorer have marked space operation of twenty thousands hour and unit
as the accumulated operational time on December 9th.

HAYABUSA spacecraft, which was launched on May 2003, succeeded the Earth
swing-by on May this year and continues to transfer into the asteroid
using the acceleration by the ion engines.

They generated 1,300m/s delta-V consuming 20kg propellant up to now.
After September the space maneuver using three ion engines was throttled
down in order to adapt power reduction of the solar array panels due to
enlargement of solar distance.

Furthermore one of three engines was turned off in the middle of October.
The spacecraft stays in deep space 1.3 astronautical unit apart from Earth.
The communication time lag exceeds twenty minutes, which is the time
duration between sending commands and confirming answers on Earth.
The telemetry bit rate is also gradually falling, so that the operation
team feels helpless.

HAYABUSA spacecraft, which is executing the maneuver operation
diligently and automatically in the lonely deep space, is sturdy and
dependable rather than us.

Hello everyone, I am not even sure how Monig is spelled. But I have just
purchased some meteorites and they are numbered. I know that someone on the
list knows how to tell if these are real collection numbers and if they have
any signifance. The numbers are printed on the meteorite with a fine white
paint. The meteorites in question are all Toluca's and here are some
examples. M8.35, M8.109, M8.41. I have several others but this should be
enough to tell if they mean anything. Thanks for your help.

Dear Mike and List:
Good evening.
Well done Mike, you've acquired specimens from Oscar Monnig's meteorite
collection. Oscar Monnig (1902 - 1999) was a native of Ft. Worth,
Texas, a contemporary (and sometime colleague and competitor) of
Nininger's, and one of America's great meteorite collectors.

You can read all about him here: http://monnigmuseum.tcu.edu/oscar.htm
Oscar donated his very extensive meteorite collection to Texas
Christian University in Ft. Worth, and the highlights of that
collection are now on display in the fabulous Monnig Gallery of
Meteorites at TCU. Both the Curator and Director of the gallery are
List members. As you may know, I designed the Monnig Gallery's website.

Glenn Huss (Nininger's son-in-law), of the American Meteorite Lab,
cataloged Oscar's collection (I think in the 1980s? Can someone help me
here?), and he is almost certainly the one who painted the numbers on
each of your specimens. M8.xxx is indeed the notation that Glenn used
for Oscar's Toluca specimens. M1 represented Deport, M13 represented
Canyon Diablo, M137 represented Allende, and so on through the
collection. So the numbers on your specimens show that you have the
35th Toluca that Glenn cataloged (M for Monnig + 8 for Toluca +
specimen #35), and the 109th, etc.

I think it's safe to say that most collectors consider Monnig specimens
-- or any specimens with historic numbers -- to be very collectable,
and they're certainly worth more (both historically and monetarily)
than ordinary Tolucas.

You can search a database of Oscar's entire collection here:
http://monnigmuseum.tcu.edu/Search.html

I hope this helps!
Best wishes,
Geoff N.
