[meteorite-list] Chassigny missing mass

2005-04-04 Thread Sabine Valange
Hello List,

Here is a message from Zelimir Gabelica that apparently can not send from
his computer.
Best wishes,
Sabine

---
Hi Pierre-Marie, Michael, list,

Yes, we all here appreciated Pierre's April fool about Chassigny.

I also felt very very concerned for a fraction of a secondbecause (and
here Pierre is right again), with a friend here in Mulhouse, we had the same
idea, thus that some 4+ kg of Chassigny (missing mass) could stay hidden within
some attic in the Chassigny village or nearby.
We also had the same idea to start a search...since 1998!

It happens that my friend has close parents in that area and we then go there
at least 2 times a year for inquiries (Chassigny is about 200 km distant from
Mulhouse), while the local inhabitants have been alerted for our search
through various posters, anouncements and...rumor.

Even the Mayor of Chassigny (who happened to become a friend of mine as we
plan to have some joint meteorite-venture with Ensisheim) knows about our
quest, is feeling concerned and offered us his best help.

However since then...just nothing!
No response, not a single micro fragment, from any side.

We don't stop our search as one never knowsbut chances are seriously
decreasing since 7 years of our constant search to get the Holly Grail
with a consequent possible Chassigny market bankrupt in case of a
success???...
(hey, this could be a nice consideration for Michael to speculate in his
next Market trends in Meteorite Times ?)

However this must not discourage you and I believe everybody can start the same
kind of search so just...good luck!!

And we can help you by giving you our numerous tips, patiently collected over
the years...but only the day we decide to give up and stop definitely our
search!

This story is definitely NOT an April fool, just facts.

Cheers to everybody,

Zelimir

Selon Pelé Pierre-Marie [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

  Hello to the List,

Sorry that Michael took this news as an important one
and not a (possible) joke on this day before looking
  at the date of post.

Proof that I posted it on April 1st is that it appears
on April meteorite-list archive (Fri Apr 1 00:54:29
EST 2005) (and it was April 1st in France)...

I think that most of you, the List members, found it
was a joke and have the sense of humour ; I received
  some emails in that way.

I apologize if I've hurt anyone with my April fool...

Anyway, it's always interesting to learn that about
4kg of Chassigny stones may sleep in an attic, and I'm
serious when I say this. It could be a great idea to
do some search in the Chassigny village.

Best regards and the finding of this remain stone will
be the dream and Holly Grail of every meteorite hunter
  for sure.

[meteorite-list] posters all gone

2005-04-04 Thread Jeffrey Shallit
I have now sent out free meteorite posters to 11 people, and am holding
3 for 3 people who did not send me their address.

Unfortunately there were a lot of people who did not follow my
instructions and sent their request to the wrong e-address; none of those
people got posters because their request went to my address for mailing
lists, which I only read every other day.

Thanks for all the interest in these posters. I am now trying to see

[meteorite-list] Lockheed Martin Delivers Atlas V to Cape Canveral for NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter Mission

2005-04-04 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.lockheedmartin.com/wms/findPage.do?dsp=fecci=16692rsbci=0fti=111ti=0sc=400

LOCKHEED MARTIN DELIVERS ATLAS V TO CAPE CANAVERAL FOR NASA'S MARS
RECONNAISSANCE ORBITER MISSION

Atlas Launch Team Begins Preparations for the Next Mission to Mars
in August

Denver, CO, April 4, 2005 -- The National Aeronautics and Space
Administration (NASA), Jet Propulsion Laboratory and Lockheed Martin
mark another significant milestone in the Mars space exploration program
as .Lockheed Martin delivered the vehicle that will launch the Mars
Reconnaissance Orbiter mission to Mars. The Atlas V, designated AV-007,
arrived at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla., where the launch team
will now begin preparations for the August 10 liftoff.

The AV-007 Atlas V launch vehicle, built by Lockheed Martin Space
Systems at its facilities near Denver, Colo., was shipped from Denver to
Cape Canaveral in two stages. The Centaur upper stage was shipped out
first on March 29, aboard an Antonov AN-124 cargo aircraft and arrived
at Cape Canaveral that afternoon. Two days later, the Atlas V's booster
stage was shipped from Denver to Cape Canaveral March 31. The Atlas
launch team will now begin horizontal processing of the Atlas V booster
and Centaur upper stage in the high bay facility at the Atlas
Spaceflight Operations Center at Launch Complex 41. The vehicle will
undergo a series of subsystem and systems testing to verify flight
readiness for the August 10 launch. The testing includes launch vehicle
flight control testing, electrical system verifications, propulsion and
pneumatic verifications, and interface checks between the booster and
upper stage. When fully stacked, the Atlas V AV-007 launch vehicle with
the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter safely contained inside the payload
fairing will stand almost 19 stories tall at a height of 188 feet.

This is a very exciting week for all of us on the Atlas program and the
Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter team said James V. Sponnick, Lockheed
Martin Atlas program vice president. Atlas is taking us back to Mars
and this year, in particular, holds a very special place in history for
NASA and the exploration of our solar system. Atlas launched the
Mariner missions to Mars in the 1960s, including Mariner 4, the first
successful mission to Mars launched on an Atlas in November 1964.
Mariner 4 provided the first ever close-up images of another planet in
our solar system during its Mars flyby in 1965. We are extremely proud
of the partnership we have shared with NASA that extends over four
decades as we continue the journey of space exploration.

The AV-007 vehicle uses the basic 401 configuration, with a
4-meter-diameter fairing and no solid rocket boosters. NASA selected
Lockheed Martin and International Launch Services for the Atlas V launch
service as well as the design, build and integration of the spacecraft,
launch support and mission operations. This will be the third Atlas
mission of the year. The Atlas series has achieved a record 76
successful flights in a row.

The MRO spacecraft, which will be the largest spacecraft to orbit Mars
weighing 4,796 lbs (2,180 kg) at liftoff, is also being built by
Lockheed Martin at its facilities near Denver, Colo. The spacecraft is
undergoing final testing and will be shipped to Kennedy Space Center at
the end of April for final processing and launch aboard the Atlas V.

JPL, a division of the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena,
manages the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter for the NASA Science Mission
Directorate, Washington. Lockheed Martin Space Systems is the prime
contractor for the project.

Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company, headquartered near Denver, Colo.,
is one of the major operating units of Lockheed Martin Corporation.
Space Systems Company designs, develops, tests and manufactures a
variety of advanced technology systems for space and defense. Chief
products include space launch systems, defense systems, interplanetary
and science spacecraft, spacecraft for commercial and government
customers, fleet ballistic missiles and missile defense systems.

For images of delivery of the Atlas V launch vehicle for the Mars
Reconnaissance Orbiter mission, go to:
http://mediaarchive.ksc.nasa.gov/search.cfm

Headquartered in Bethesda, Md., Lockheed Martin employs about 130,000
people worldwide and is principally engaged in the research, design,
development, manufacture and integration of advanced technology systems,
products and services. The corporation reported 2004 sales of $35.5 billion.

[meteorite-list] Mars Rover Mission Could Last 1, 000 Days if NASA Agrees

2005-04-04 Thread Ron Baalke

http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2005/04/04/MNGBNC2S9B1.DTL

Scientists push to keep scouting Mars Rovers' 90-day mission, now in its
15th month, could last 1,000 days if NASA agrees

David Perlman
San Francisco Chronicle
April 4, 2005

Fifteen eventful months after the start of their scheduled three- month
mission, the twin Mars rovers are still hard at it, functioning superbly
as they wheel across the sands and past the rocks of a Martian landscape
where evidence of ancient water seems undeniable.

Now the Earthbound leaders of the robotic expedition -- using radio and
sophisticated software to control every maneuver of the six-wheeled
explorers and every deployment of their onboard instruments, and
confronted from time to time with technical problems that could have
spelled the mission's end -- are asking NASA to keep Spirit and
Opportunity working for at least 18 more months, a request likely to be
approved.

We were good to go for 90 sols when we landed, said Jacob Matijevic,
the mission's team chief for engineering, but at this stage it looks
like 1, 000 sols -- that's our goal. Engineering-wise, we're in terrific
shape.

A sol is a full Martian day, somewhat longer than an Earth day at
precisely 24 hours, 39 minutes and 35 seconds -- a difference that
forces scientists and engineers at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in
Pasadena to endure some awkward sleeping times trying to keep up with
sunny days and dark nights on Mars.

These days, the rovers are on the move every day. Spirit is climbing
high in the Columbia Hills, and Opportunity is heading for a mysterious
patch of etched terrain.

But it's not always clear sailing. From the beginning, the mission's
engineering teams have performed extraordinary feats whenever
emergencies threatened -- and nature even stepped in recently to
accomplish one repair job without human intervention.

Spirit faced that newest crisis only a few weeks ago, when electric
current from its solar panels dropped dangerously low. The panels on
each rover normally provide 900 watt-hours of electricity to keep the
vehicle moving and its instruments performing, but on sol 416 -- March 5
-- Matijevic and his team saw that Spirit's power levels had dropped by
nearly two-thirds, down to 350 watt-hours.

Its panoramic camera, focused on a calibration target aboard the
vehicle, revealed that Martian dust had coated the target, and the
engineers deduced that fine dust from abraded sand grains was also
obscuring the solar panels. With so little power, Spirit and its
instruments would soon be crippled.

At that time, Spirit was driving up the slopes of the Columbia Hills, a
major feature of the broad Gusev Crater where the rover landed in
January 2004.

It's a gusty place up there where we're climbing, said Steven W.
Squyres, the Cornell astronomer who is the mission's science chief, and
then our cameras detected several dust devils crossing over -- they were
wind cleaning events, and the gusts apparently swept the dust off the
panels, because a few mornings later the power levels jumped up to 800
watt-hours, and now we're safely back to 830.

Last summer, Spirit challenged the engineers with a really tough and
long- lasting problem when its right-front wheel began binding, as if
something were obstructing its gear box. Each of the six wheels on the
rovers operates independently, and each can be run individually by the
engineers at Mission Control.

We found the wheel was drawing more current than its limit, Matijevic
said, and that it could possibly burn out the motor as well.

The engineers turned then to the full-size model rover standing ready to
move in the sand-covered test bed at the laboratory -- the hangar
queen, as the team calls it -- where even the smallest part of the Mars
rovers is duplicated. There they took the same wheel and the same gear
box apart again and again, and tested them under every conceivable
condition.

Believe me, we did some very hard thinking and selective heating and
ran that wheel in the test bed back and forth over and over again, and
finally decided to have Spirit itself drive on only five wheels for a
time and then drive backward some of the time, Matijevic said.

It took months, but we finally found that lubricant wasn't flowing into
the gear box properly. After giving the wheel on Mars some rest time,
and taking time out between drives, and using that balky wheel only once
a week and driving half the time forward and half the time backward --
we've now finally got the lubricant to flow properly again.

Since then, he said, all they've needed to do is pay continued close
attention to driving conditions, and the wheel is fully back in the
family.

But the engineers can't fix all the problems. One of the instruments on
Spirit is in trouble now -- the Rock Abrasion Tool, better known as the
RAT. The RAT is used to grind away the surface of rocks encountered by a
rover, so the rover's spectrometers can identify the minerals and
analyze

Geoff, Excuse my piggybacking. I'm unable to post directly.
Is our current information sufficient to completely rule out the existence
of a ring system for EARTH?
Reading Harry McSween's Stardust to Planets brought back memories of John

exclaiming at one point about firefly like particles streaming past his
capsule, a comment that as far as I know was never publically addressed.
The fact that rings exist in relation to so many of the planets which unlike
Saturn, defied observation until relatively recently, gives me pause.
Excuse my curiosity if it lacks sophistication. As a recent amateur
meteoricist, I cannot dampen my enthusiasm for all the potential connections
no matter how far fetched and unfounded they may be. An ring system
consisting of extremely fine, yet undetected, particles could provide a
constant source of dibris which slowed by contact with the atmosphere
eventually deccelerates and plummet to earth, a constant source of IPDP
[inter or intra].
My hope is that my recent memberships allows the priveledge of asking these
kinds questions and getting responses from reliable sources. A decisive no

[meteorite-list] Does this rectify negative feedback?

2005-04-04 Thread ROCKS ON FIRE
Hello, Folks,
may I ask your opinion:
I listed 2 items (Haig irons) on ebay and forgot to take out Posts to
Worldwide, leaving only Posts to Australia, but mentioned in the
describtion Sorry, Australia only!

One wellknown meteorite collector/dealer from Chicago accquired both
with Buy it now option and paid straight way for them via PayPal.

Now I realised the mistake, as I do not have an export permit for this
meteorite and wrote this gentleman an apologetic letter and refunded the
money straight away.

It hit me a bit hard when I got his reply (strange wordings, read below,
if you want) and saw that he had given me 2 negative feedbacks for that.

I always thought we are some sort of a family and would try to sort

punished with a severe penalty? You don't seem to be so stupid, so I
assume you will take my point.

Yes, Steve, you paid straight away for these pieces via PayPal, which
you always do and what I always appreciated. And I refunded you the
money via PayPal straight away and asked you, if I can do anything for
you, as I reckoned I would owe you one. I guess this straighten this out.

I still have to obey to the law here in Australia, and if you are
suggesting that the meteorite community in America bluntly can ignore
the law over there, I believe you are very much mistaken. I am also sure
that most Americans uphold the law.
I still believe that we can solve this little dispute between us. But if

I don't believe there is any way a ring system could be stable in a binary
planet system (which is really what the Earth/Moon is). Theories of ring
system formation seem to require a fairly large system of moons to capture
and shepherd debris.

Also, the effects of even a sparse ring system probably would not have gone
unnoticed given all the satellites in orbit- particularly geostationary
ones.

They were water ice crystals which had formed on the outside of the

eBay clearly states in its rules that you can put conditions
(restrictions) on your sell items and those looking at the items on ebay
have to abide by your description. I guess the only question I would
raise is why not just put the item solely on ebay Australia's site and
not the general site where other bidders from other parts of the world
would see it and want to buy it?

I clearly state in my ebay auctions that I don't ship to Italy and if
someone bids on the item from Italy then they have violated the
conditions of my sale not the other way around.

No you don't deserve the negative feedback that Steve gave you. I keep
thinking that perhaps Steve is coming around and then he does something
like this that make me not to want to have anything to do with him ever

The only way to look at this is if you drive enough miles you'll get an
insect on the windshield. You have enough bidee's on your items and
sooner or later someone will leave you a bad feedback even if you don't
deserve it. One negative feedback on 100 positive ones or a 1000 in your
case, shouldn't tarnish your reputation at all. I'd put Steve on my bid

send-straight-to-the-delete-basket list.

You need to remove those negatives and then learn
(1) manners and (2) respect for the law.

After reading that, you wonder why the entire world hates Americans.
Steve, be a man and remove those feedbacks from him.

Subject: [meteorite-list] Does this rectify negative feedback?

  Hello, Folks,

  may I ask your opinion:

I listed 2 items (Haig irons) on ebay and forgot to take out Posts to
Worldwide, leaving only Posts to Australia, but mentioned in the
  describtion Sorry, Australia only!

One wellknown meteorite collector/dealer from Chicago accquired both
with
Buy it now option and paid straight way for them via PayPal.

I always thought we are some sort of a family and would try to sort
things
  out - I have tried!

I would very much appreciate your honest opinion in this matter, as this
is the very first negative feedback on our proud 1000+ positive record.
( If you are bored you can go throught the correspondense following.)

  Thanks for your advise and

  Best regards from DOWN-UNDER,

  Dear Steve,

I am very sorry that you are taking this mishap so hard.
I was always under the impression that you are a gentleman and would
understand that we all are only human and can make mistakes.

This was a honest listing mistake and my describtion also clearly stated
Sorry, Australia only! I do understand that this is not much comfort
for you, and I can only offer you my humble apologies, and I am sorry to
loosing you as a good customer. But I am also sorry to having you
mistakenly categorised as collector-buddy and friend.
If you take a deep breeze and put yourself into my position, Would you
take the risk for some $ 30 bucks to having the Fed's snooping through
every corner of your property, getting dragged to court and being
punished
with a severe penalty? You don't seem to be so stupid, so I assume you
  will take my point.

Yes, Steve, you paid straight away for these pieces via PayPal, which
you
always do and what I always appreciated. And I refunded you the money
via
PayPal straight away and asked you, if I can do anything for you, as I
reckoned I would owe you one. I guess this straighten this out.

I still have to obey to the law here in Australia, and if you are
suggesting that the meteorite community in America bluntly can ignore
the
law over there, I believe you are very much mistaken. I am also sure
that
  most Americans uphold the law.
I still believe that we can solve this little dispute between us. But if
you prefer to put it onto the billboard, to the list or where ever, I
  can't stop you, feel free!

At last: I will not take your expression of your phony selling
technikes. For this you will give me an explanation and take it back.
If you want to do anything with eBay, that's fine with me, go ahead!

I apologised to you for having made a honest mistake and thought you
would
  take it as a gentleman.
But if you reckon that you are the only unfailable man in the world and
that the law is only there when it suits you, when you cannot see a
genuine mistake, Sorry, Mate, you then certainly lost me!

  Best regards from DOWN-UNDER,
