[meteorite-list] Kaali Crater in Estonia
http://www.baltictimes.com/art.php?art_id=13029%3E Kaali crater: still having an impact By Steve Roman The Baltic Times July 6, 2005 TALLINN - It's kind of an unwritten rule in Estonia - if you want to see something weird, go to the islands. Chalk it up to geographic isolation or the celebrated beer brewing traditions of some islanders, but it's on these outlying patches of land that the nation keeps all the assorted bits that don't fit anywhere else - emu farms, mysterious clusters of stones, allegedly haunted manor houses and villages that appear stuck in time. One of the most famous of these curiosities is the Kaali meteor crater site on Estonia's largest island, Saaremaa, 18km from its capital Kuressaare. Now resembling a small, round lake, the main crater was formed sometime between 7,500 and 4,000 years ago when a 20-80 ton iron meteorite slammed into the Earth, carving out a hole 110m across. Pieces also broke off the meteor as it entered the atmosphere, spraying the land like a shotgun blast and creating eight smaller craters nearby. By itself this cluster of meteorite craters is already interesting enough to attract thousands of curious visitors each summer, but let's remember that this is an Estonian island phenomenon, so the X-Files factor gets cranked up a few notches. To the site's resume we can also add pagan worship, ritual animal sacrifice, appearances in the Finnish national epic, the possible origin of Jaanipaev traditions and connections to a former Estonian president. With a track record like this, it's no wonder the site's popularity as a tourist destination shows no sign of waning. On June 17, a brand new, 9 million kroon (575,000 euro) visitor center was inaugurated in Kaali to help provide for the hoards of visitors who flock here during the high season. Tuuli Partel, Project Leader of the non-profit organization that runs the center, isn't surprised that she and other employees in Kaali find themselves working 12 to 16-hour shifts. Scientists say that this is the most attractive crater in Eurasia. Here you can see the main crater and little craters all together, and see how the meteorite came down, she said. Apart from its museum of meteoritics and limestone, the 700 square-meter wood and dolomite facility features a souvenir shop, a food shop, a 60-person conference hall, a 10-room guesthouse and that most vital of Estonian creature comforts: wireless internet access. Despite all this public attention, the new high-tech facility and nearly a century of intense scientific scrutiny, there are many secrets that Kaali still isn't giving up, and it's those unknowns that make this place truly mysterious. Weird science Scientists are fairly sure they know how this story began: a meteor initially weighing some 400 - 10,000 tons sped in from the northeast moving 15 - 45 kilometers per second and entered the Earth's atmosphere at a 45-degree angle. After turning into a fireball and losing most of its mass, the meteor broke apart about 5 - 10 kilometers from the surface, then hit Saaremaa with a force that has been compared to that of a small atomic blast. What they still can't tell us is when this all happened. The evidence, at least for now, points in two different directions. We usually give two dates - '4,000 years' and 'older', said Reet Tiirmaa, a geologist with Tallinn Technological University who specializes in meteors. The age of the sediments of the lake in the main crater tell us that the [impact] was almost 4,000 years ago. But now we've studied the peat of the [nearby] swamp and in one layer we found very small impact spheres from the explosion. This layer was 7,500 years old, which says that the impact was 7,500 years ago, she said. Research continues, but the age contradiction shows no sign of being resolved. Scientists from France, Poland and Hungary have brought in more advanced testing equipment, but they're having the same problems, according to Tiirmaa. Nor is this the first headache that Kaali has caused for investigators. In 1927, the site's pioneer researcher, Ivan Reinwald, found evidence that the craters were meteoric in origin, but it took him an entire decade to find the first fragments of the actual meteor to prove it. While geologists are working on the question of when the meteor hit, archaeologists are trying to interpret the oddities they've dug up at the site. Excavations begun in the 1970s have uncovered many interesting things: remains of a 470 meter wall that surrounded the crater during the early iron age (600 BC to AD 100), evidence of a fortified settlement inhabited from the 5th to 7th century BC, a small hoard of silver jewelry from the 3rd to 5th centuries AD, and piles of domestic animal bones, some dating to as late as the 17th century. The wall, the silver and the bones have led to speculation that centuries after the catastrophic explosion took place, the crater took on the role of a pagan worship site. The practice of

The third nation to launch a man into space has lofty space ambitions that include putting two astronauts into orbit this September and eventually sending up a space station and even a manned mission to the moon. Actually, our country has its own Deep Impact plans, it's just we've never revealed them to the public before, the Beijing News quoted Chinese astronomer Zhao Haibin as saying. Right now, our focus is on a moon probe, but once that's successful, we will immediately start pursuing this plan. The main goal of NASA's Deep Impact mission was to knock free primordial materials from the nucleus of comet Tempel 1 that could unlock the secret of how life formed on Earth. China's mission would instead be mainly aimed at protecting the planet from being hit by a comet or asteroid, Zhao said, referring to the kind of doomsday scenario shown in the 1998 film Deep Impact, for which the U.S. spacecraft was named. As opposed to NASA's impacting method, China would use a more clever method that could be called pasting, he said, explaining the plan was to soft-land a craft with an engine capable of pushing a comet or asteroid off a collision course. Zhao said he and other astronomers at the Nanjing Zijinshan Observatory in eastern China had tracked more than 700 space rocks potentially on track to hit the Earth by the end of June. But China still had to overcome technical obstacles before it could send a comet collider into space, Xinhua news agency quoted Huang Chunping, the lead engineer behind the rocket that sent China's first man into space in 2003, as saying. We still need to make sure that scientific data could be successfully transmitted back to the Earth via the impactor's mothership, Huang said. __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
[meteorite-list] History's Greatest Comet Hunter Approaches Major Milestone (SOHO)
Dolores Beasley Headquarters, Washington July 6, 2005 (Phone: 202/358-1753) Bill Steigerwald Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md. (Phone: 301/286-5017) RELEASE: 05-173 HISTORY'S GREATEST COMET HUNTER APPROACHES MAJOR MILESTONE The Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) spacecraft is expected to discover its 1,000TH comet this summer. The SOHO spacecraft is a joint effort between NASA and the European Space Agency. It has accounted for approximately one-half of all comet discoveries with computed orbits in the history of astronomy. Before SOHO was launched, only 16 sun grazing comets had been discovered by space observatories. Based on that experience, who could have predicted SOHO would discover more than 60 times that number, and in only nine years, said Dr. Chris St. Cyr. He is senior project scientist for NASA's Living With a Star program at the agency's Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md. This is truly a remarkable achievement! About 85 percent of the comets SOHO discovered belongs to the Kreutz group of sun grazing comets, so named because their orbits take them very close to Earth's star. The Kreutz sun grazers pass within 500,000 miles of the star's visible surface. Mercury, the planet closest to the sun, is about 36 million miles from the solar surface. SOHO has also been used to discover three other well-populated comet groups: the Meyer, with at least 55 members; Marsden, with at least 21 members; and the Kracht, with 24 members. These groups are named after the astronomers who suggested the comets are related, because they have similar orbits. Many comet discoveries were made by amateurs using SOHO images on the Internet. SOHO comet hunters come from all over the world. The United States, United Kingdom, China, Japan, Taiwan, Russia, Ukraine, France, Germany, and Lithuania are among the many countries whose citizens have used SOHO to chase comets. Almost all of SOHO's comets are discovered using images from its Large Angle and Spectrometric Coronagraph (LASCO) instrument. LASCO is used to observe the faint, multimillion-degree outer atmosphere of the sun, called the corona. A disk in the instrument is used to make an artificial eclipse, blocking direct light from the sun, so the much fainter corona can be seen. Sun grazing comets are discovered when they enter LASCO's field of view as they pass close by the star. Building coronagraphs like LASCO is still more art than science, because the light we are trying to detect is very faint, said Dr. Joe Gurman, U.S. project scientist for SOHO at Goddard. Any imperfections in the optics or dust in the instrument will scatter the light, making the images too noisy to be useful. Discovering almost 1,000 comets since SOHO's launch on December 2, 1995 is a testament to the skill of the LASCO team. SOHO successfully completed its primary mission in April 1998. It has enough fuel to remain on station to keep hunting comets for decades if the LASCO continues to function. Dear List, Somebody asked if olivine gabbro and norite are interchangeable terms. The chart on the Washington University in St. Louis site clearly shows that they are not in the case of NWA 773. NWA 773 was proven not to be a Norite and I feel it is fraudulent to sell recent pairings as being Noritic ignoring the work of the best scientists in world. We have Fabien saying his material is not paired to any other lunar meteorite yet there is not a single document stating what his material really is. It looks to be paired to NWA 773 but I do not use visuals anymore because they are not an accurate means to determine classifications. As a matter of fact, he copied data from NWA 773, word-for-word, even the promotional clause. Calling it a Norite is irresponsible in my opinion. I would be all over it at $1000.00 a gram, the most recent selling price, if I was convinced it was a true Norite. http://www.gtherald.com/herald/2005/jul/06mars.htm Exhibit out of this world Children's Museum interactive display showcases Mars By LISA PERKINS Grand Travers Herald (Michigan) July 6, 2005 Five-year-old Ryan Mondalek of Dearborn, who frequently visits his aunt in Northport, always includes a visit to the Great Lakes Children's Museum in his local itinerary. This time he was thrilled to find the Museum's latest exhibit - Destination Mars. This is really cool, said Mondalek, as he created a dust devil with one of the hands-on displays. Destination Mars, on exhibit throughout the summer, has hands-on components that provide visitors with an opportunity to discover the science behind planetary exploration through a variety of interactive exhibits and displays. Visitors can lift two identical soda cans that have different weights, demonstrating the differences in gravity on the two planets. Photos of Mars and Earth are on display, and not that easy to tell apart. A one-third scale model of the twin Mars Exploration Rovers, currently exploring Mars surface, on loan from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, includes a computer station where visitors can try their skill in driving a virtual rover and witness a detailed animation of a Mars mission from lift-off to the rover's exploration of the surface. An actual rock from Mars - a thin slice of the Zagami meteorite - is on display under a microscope with a polarizing light source that reveals its crystalline structure. An audio presentation tells the story of the rock's extraordinary journey from Mars to Earth. He loves to come here, said Mondalek's grandmother Pat Aldgrand, we don't have anything like this in Dearborn. There is the Henry Ford Museum but this is different. It's just for kids. Destination Mars was created by the Space Science Institute in Bolder, Colo. and funded primarily by the National Science Foundation and NASA. It's main purpose is to integrate scientific research with education and public outreach. Research programs include Earth science, space physics, planetary science and astrophysics. Support for the exhibit's display at the Great Lakes Children's Museum was funded, in large part, by a leadership gift from the DTE Energy Foundation. The museum is located at 336 W. Front St., at the corner of Front and Hall, two blocks west of downtown Traverse City. Hours of operation are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m., Sunday and Monday. __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

http://www.journalstar.com/articles/2005/06/30/top_story/extras/doc42c3529782b8d302103789.txt Sky falls on Fairbury man By JONNIE TAT'E FINN Lincoln Journal Star July 6, 2005 FAIRBURY - Brad Kinzie made a wish on a falling star last week. Actually, he made two - after a close encounter with what he believes is a meteorite. It swooshed right over my head, Kinzie, 50, said Wednesday at his home in Fairbury. I shut my eyes when I felt its wind push past me. I knew right away it was a falling star. That was at 1:30 a.m. Friday. Kinzie was watering his front lawn. It's been so hot, he explained. The grass gets more water when you do it at night. The quarter-pound object, which hasn't yet been analyzed by experts, fell at about a 45-degree angle from the southwest and landed about 65 feet from Kinzie, he said. He marked off his position with a pinwheel and planted a fake red flower where the specimen fell. The rock, with its darkly colored pitted surface, is about 2.5 inches long and 1.5 inches across. It still had a silver and reddish-orange glow to it when I checked it out, Kinzie said. So I left it where it was overnight - I wasn't going to touch it. But I didn't sleep a wink. That weekend, Kinzie told his two grandchildren about the close encounter. Michael said, 'Grandpa, you need to get a hold of those people at the university,' Kinzie recalled. In a little hick town, you don't know what to do with something like this. On Monday, Kinzie called Martin Gaskell, an astronomy professor at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. This is an extremely rare case, Gaskell said. There are only a handful of cases of this kind of close encounter. A chance of this happening to any one individual is maybe one in 10 million or one in 100 million. Without examining the specimen, Gaskell said it's hard to be 100 percent sure if what Kinzie found was, in fact, a meteorite. But there is strong evidence for it, the professor said. Well, it was a witnessed fall, though I doubt it was still glowing when he found it. That was probably more psychological, I think, Gaskell said. Meteorites stop burning about 10 miles up in the atmosphere but are still hot when they land. The object also has a strong magnetic pull and the physical characteristics of a meteorite. I imagine it's probably an iron meteorite, he said. Sam Treves, professor emeritus at UNL who Gaskell described as an expert in meteors, will study the object. Treves was unavailable for comment Wednesday. In the lab, the rock will be sliced and etched with acid, which - if it's a meteorite - will create crystalline structures, Gaskell said. It all has to do with the slowness at which the metals condense, he added. In space, this happens slowly. If it is a meteorite, it could be worth a few thousand dollars, said Erik Hubl, chairman of the Hyde Memorial Observatory Board. Hubl has collected meteorites since the mid-1980s. Meteorites are definitely valuable and collecting them is for sure a rare and obscure hobby, Hubl said. Kinzie's first wish on the falling star - a wish about his family - has already been granted, he said. So he'll likely keep the rock around rather than take the money. His other wish - which he wouldn't reveal - hasn't come true yet. I'm lucky it didn't hit my noggin, he said. Gemini Observatory Hilo, Hawaii Tuesday, 5 July 2005 Deep Impact Captured by Gemini The Gemini North telescope on Mauna Kea successfully captured the dramatic fireworks display produced by the collision of NASA's Deep Impact probe with Comet 9P/Tempel 1. Researchers in two control rooms on Hawaii¹s Big Island (on the Mauna Kea and in Hilo) were able to keep enough composure amid an almost giddy excitement to perform a preliminary analysis of the data. They concluded from the mid-infrared spectroscopic observations that there was strong evidence for silicates or rocky material exposed by the impact. Little doubt remains that the unprecedented quality of the Gemini data will keep astronomers busy for years. The properties of the mid-infrared light were completely transformed after impact, said David Harker of the University of San Diego, co-investigator for the research team. In addition to brightening by a factor of about 4, the characteristics of the mid-infrared light was like a chameleon and within five minutes of the collision it looked like an entirely new object. Harker¹s research partner Chick Woodward of the University of Minnesota speculated further, We are possibly seeing crystalline silicates which might even be similar to the beach sand here in Hawaii! This data will keep us busy trying to figure out the size and composition of these grains to better understand the similarities and differences between the material contained within comets and other bodies in the solar system. In addition to the spectroscopic observations, before-and-after images were also obtained by the Gemini telescope in thermal infrared light and can be seen in Figure 1. Gemini monitored the comet for several weeks prior to the impact and will continue to watch it through the end of July. The Gemini observations were part of a coordinated effort between the W.M. Keck, Subaru and Gemini Observatories so that each could concentrate on different observations and provide a complete, complementary picture of the impact. Astronomers anticipate that the data gathered from the largest and most sophisticated set of telescopes positioned to see the impact will add considerably to our understanding of comets as dynamic probes of our solar system¹s early evolution some 4.5-5 billion years ago. The Gemini observations were made using Michelle, the facility mid-infrared imager/spectrograph built at the Royal Observatory of Edinburgh (ROE) in the UK. The instrument has unique capabilities in the mid-infrared especially at Gemini which uses protected silver coatings on main mirrors to provide exceptional performance in the thermal or mid-infrared part of the spectrum. Gemini is an international partnership managed by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy under a cooperative agreement with the National Science Foundation. The Gemini Observatory provides the astronomical communities in each partner country with state-of-the-art astronomical facilities that allocate observing time in proportion to each country's contribution. In addition to financial support, each country also contributes significant scientific and technical resources. The national research agencies that form the Gemini partnership include: the US National Science Foundation (NSF), the UK Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (PPARC), the Canadian National Research Council (NRC), the Chilean Comisión Nacional de Investigación Cientifica y Tecnológica (CONICYT), the Australian Research Council (ARC), the Argentinean Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas (CONICET) and the Brazilian Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico (CNPq). The Observatory is managed by the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy, Inc. (AURA) under a cooperative agreement with the NSF. The NSF also serves as the executive agency for the international partnership. Hi Steve (the undisputed #1), I remember STUART ATKINSON from a small town in the northern coastal part of Great Britain (was it in Scotland?), as having been one of the very engaged contributors to this list, especially regarding the education of young pupils, a few years ago. [Hi Stu, still out there and all going well with you?]. I know, Steve, you wanted an off-list answer, but anyway: I am posting this via the list since I don´t have Stu´s mail address at hands any more, and I am sure some of the other list oldies can help in this respect, and make this address available to you. Alex Berlin/Germany Hello List, I was curious who on the list has done extensive speaking about meteorites in schools? Please contact me off list if you have experience in this area. Further to the previous post. This seller (abusalem1) has about 20 items up at the moment most of which were pulled by ebay for the shill bidding or were won by this gentleman with his own shill bids. He used 3 buyer ids to push the bids up to a couple of bucks above the current bids and then followed up the auction with private after sale offers. Fortunately in my case anyway no money changed hands and in fact he would not even acknowledge my requests for a total after the event but only came back with requests for a higher offer. The other legit buyer did send money but did end up getting most of it back.
