Re: [meteorite-list] AD - meteorite sale - fresh new black crusted NWA
Hello Darren and all, It is true that it looks very much the same... but NWA 1584 was declared to be found in 2002 and shown in MB87 in July 2003... Of course, those new individuals can have been kept somewhere for 3 years or even found later. I don't know how oxydation could have been after 3 more years in the Sahara for such a fresh meteorite, which depends on WHERE in the Sahara. Comparing slices' pictures of both meteorites does not show any difference on that point of view. Just a comment... [meteorite-list] Sunshine on Comets: Part I (Deep Impact)
http://www.astrobio.net/news/article1731.html Sunshine on Comets: Part I Astrobiology Magazine October 3, 2005 Summary (Oct 03, 2005): Jessica Sunshine is the Deep Impact mission scientist responsible for the onboard infrared spectrometer. In the first half of this two-part interview, she discusses what the comet's nucleus looked like before and after impact, and explains why it's so difficult to piece together the spectroscopic data. Sunshine on Comets Part 1 On July 4th of this year, NASA sent a spacecraft into the path of the comet Tempel 1. When the comet hit the spacecraft, the resulting explosion sent out a huge cloud of dust and gas. Meanwhile, the Deep Impact mothership, which had flown safely past the comet nucleus, turned back around to watch the fireworks. The onboard spectrometer focused on the impact debris cloud in order to determine what materials were blown out by the blast. Jessica Sunshine, of the Science Applications International Corporation, is the member of the Deep Impact science team responsible for the spacecraft's infrared spectrometer. She recently sat down with Astrobiology Magazine's Leslie Mullen to discuss why it's so difficult to untangle the spectroscopic data, and what the mission has taught us so far about how comets are constructed. Astrobiology Magazine (AM): What was the spectral signature of the comet before impact? Jessica Sunshine (JS): The nucleus is darker than charcoal, so it has very low reflectivity. What we mostly saw was a little bit of reflected sunlight, plus emission in the thermal. The spectrum of the nucleus is relatively smooth, but you expect the features to be subtle because the nucleus is so dark. The only real feature that stands out is the ambient coma between us and the nucleus. So we saw trace amounts of water and carbon dioxide, and also faint amounts of organics. The smooth spectral curve http://deepimpact.jpl.nasa.gov/images/spectrometer2.jpg of the nucleus provided an incredibly dramatic contrast, because it instantaneously changed from the impact. It was amazing when it happened, and it still amazes me. AM: But weren't you expecting a lot of material to come out of the comet's nucleus from the impact? JS: Well, expecting and seeing are two different things. We also didn't know where the spectrometer was going to be relative to the impact. The pointing was always an issue. We had biased it to be downrange, but you never know, and in fact it took us a while to figure out where the spectrometer was. We could've been up-range of the impact, and it would not have been as spectacular. AM: Why did you want the spectrometer to be downrange of the impact, rather than up-range or dead-center? JS: We wanted to be downrange so that we could see changes in the material flowing out from the impact ejecta. If you're dead-on, it would be very hard to see changes. We would've loved to have been dead-on afterwards, when the spacecraft had passed the nucleus and then turned back around to look at it. But we would've had to have incredible luck for the spectrometer to have gone over the impact site at that point, because we were moving so quickly and the spectrometer's field of view is very small. AM: So after the impact, the spectrometer detected more water and carbon dioxide? JS: What's really exciting is it's not just more, it literally became glowing. If you were in a darkened room, the hot gases would've lit up the room. The vapor cloud was just phenomenal - it saturated some of our pixels. But the cloud also was moving very quickly, because by the next integration it was gone. AM: How long is an integration? JS: 720 milliseconds, at that point. The other thing was the organics. We knew organics were going to be vaporized, and we were expecting to see each organic material have a peak at a specific wavelength, depending on what it was. But what we saw was that anything that had a carbon-hydrogen bond was vaporized, and we got a conglomerate peak. That means there were a lot of organics, and a lot of different kinds, but we couldn't tell what any of it was. AM: Are you now working on separating out all those lines? JS: I don't think there is a way to separate it out. But if we stand back and use the ground-based observations of the coma before and after impact, we can see specific features, and we're still working on trying to interpret what they are. The difference between 10 minutes before and 5 to 10 minutes after impact is that both the water and the carbon dioxide went up by factors of 10, and the organics went up by factors of 20. AM: What kinds of organics were seen before impact? JS: The best you can say is they're probably consistent with what we expect to see in a coma - formaldehyde, methanol. AM: And the organics that were seen after impact - probably more of the same, plus some others? JS: There were things we hadn't seen

I have received a negative feedback for the first time out about 450 some transactions. The negative feed back came as a result of my negative feed back to them for not paying for and item they won after four weeks and three days. I am interested in sharing the name of this ebay buyer for others to avoid. Their complaint with me was I don't except paypal BUT in my listing I always state that I don't except paypal. Had they asked me to simply cancel the transaction since they didn't realize I didn't take paypal I would have been glad to do so. Instead they lead me to believe (several times) that a payment had been sent. I'd be glad to share my dispute information with people for some verification. I do accept credit cards and they could have paid for it that way but didn't. I believe I bent over backwards for them to bring the sell to a successful conclusion. Three other items I sold to this person were also ultra slow in getting payments (three weeks or longer) They keep their feedback (private) which indicates less than desirable feedback. I feel that this should be brought before other sellers so they have the option to avoid this unfair buyer. Having a real good feedback rating I am not concern with one blemish but will pursue this as far as I can. Ebay wants you to pay to settle the problem, dispute!! Re: [meteorite-list] Ebay Negative Feed back
Hi Al and all, The eBay feedback system is so transparently flawed I give it nearly zero credibility. If someone has multiple complaints, only then does it matter to me. I never use it unless a buyer directly pleads with me and I don't give a damn if anyone uses it with me. Since this whole rating thing is based on the whims of a huge population peppered here and there with sickos, I consider any rating over 97%+ excellent and 100% nothing short of miraculous. Al, it is clearly unfair that you got dinged but that is the nature of this eBay set up. It should always be viewed as generally reflecting the business practices of an individual. Anyone within the 97%+ range indicates only whackos have a problem with him/her. While a perfect 100% is what all dealers should strive for, it is unrealistic to believe any of us could maintain it because there ARE people who will try to cheat you and when you don't let them they will strike back with a negative feedback. Your one defense is a responding feedback - but even then, eBay screws you again by limiting you to like 25 words! Even so, you can clarify (within obvious limits) what really occurred. Then, since your rating is like 99% anyone looking into the single negative feedback can trace your response and read it. It ends up hurting the original complainer far more than you, as they inevitably have multiple complaints and you have one. Who's most believable in a such a he said - she said scenario? I know it is frustrating when one works for years attempting to be entirely fair in every way in every deal. You start to take a good deal of pride in being a 100% honest and fair dealer under every circumstance. Then comes the time someone tries to cheat you and you won't let them - and they ding YOUR reputation! But, remember, while pride, when properly aligned can be a good thing, it can also be destructive if we become obsessed. So, word your negative feedback carefully and rationally and anyone so inclined can trace your negative feedback and check out your response. But, do you think anyone will be concerned if you have a 99.7% positive rating? Unfair, yes. Damaging? - not really. Only the most naive people could possibly think someone with hundreds of deals should have a perfect rating when the rating is based on the whims of a public that includes all manor of whackos and deviants. It is good you care about your reputation. It wouldn't be good to obsess about it. 99% makes you A # 1 in any sane person's book. http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status.html#opportunity OPPORTUNITY UPDATE: Slight Hiccup Before Getting to 'Erebus Crater' - sol 592-598, Oct 03, 2005: Opportunity suffered a warm reboot last week. After the flight computer rebooted, the spacecraft went into 'safe mode'. This error caused the team to miss two Odyssey passes. The evening pass was missed because the reboot occurred during the Odyssey pass. The morning pass was missed because safe mode enforces the deep sleep behavior. Real-time commands were sent on sol 597 in order to access the state of the vehicle. Opportunity was healthy and the team regained control of the vehicle. A lite master sequence was loaded and sol 597 became a stand down day. On sol 598, the initial system recovery steps were taken and subsystems were tested. All subsystems look good. This week Opportunity will continue with nominal operations. The rover will continue to move west around Erebus Crater.
