Hi List. I purchased a 15 gm piece of Miles (which I think is one of the prettiest meteorites visually internally when sliced) I of course inspected all surfaces and edges for rust. Looked very clean. Buying from a reputable collector/dealer I assumed this specimen was treated or at the very least passed USDA inspection, sort a speak! Anyways about 3 years later I noticed my white cotton in my gem jar to have a discoloration. Upon inspection when I opened the gem jar and inspected the Miles on the backside it had cracked and was rusting like a severed vain!! All I could think was maybe it had Lawrencite disease. Since this is not covered under my Health coverage, Miles remains in my collection until I can replace it. This is the only piece of over 220 specimens in my collection to show any signs of deterioration. I even have a 300 gm complete stone of Nantan that looks fresh as the day I bought it over 5 years ago.Just my 2 cents worth is all. Hello Don and list members. Just my two cents here. In my opinion you are risking rust on any iron meteorite if you just let it sit on display for years. I recommend taking them out and inspecting them every couple of months. If you notice any discoloration. Use a little CLR on a Q tip and wash it off, then a thin coating of a good quality oil. The same is true of a gun, it is treated to resist rust, but if you just sit it in the closet and forget about it, it too will rust. [meteorite-list] purple inclusion in Pete's meteorite
Howdy, all I just finished a quick Raman analysis of Pete's meteorite, the one with the purple inclusion in a sulfide. The short version - it's an oxide weathering rind in a void in the sulfide. I don't recall who raised that possibility, but you win the cigar. The long version is that the sulfide appears to be pentlandite or at least fairly nickel-rich for troilite. The Raman spectrum is fairly odd, but that probably has to do with the very little information available on Raman spectra of sulfides rather than anything truly bizarre about the sample. Examination under a light microscope shows that the purple bit isn't an inclusion at all but an optical illusion of one - it's a void space in the sulfide that is coated on all surfaces with the reflective purple coating. A Raman spectrum shows that it contains the sulfide along with both hematite and magnetite. In other words, the sulfide is in the initial stages of rusting. Shiny. RE: [meteorite-list] RE: POLL: rustiest most unstable known
The way I see it is there are two issues with rusting: 1) water/chlorine oxygen that is in the meteorite when you buy it, Often due to etching in water based etchants or rain damage when it was in the ground - This causes rusting even if you coat it in varnish since it is just using up contaminants inside the matrix. To over come this type of rusting you need to dry the metal very well and maybe even use sodium hydroxide solution to neutralize any acid. 2) External sources of water vapor, chlorine and such: This can be prevented by using appropriate VCI and dessicant or dehumidification and keeping the specimens in a closed cabinet away from draughts and sources of water or contaminats. And this means not using bear fingers when you pick up irons! Some Irons do seem to rust no matter what you do to them, but I have succsfully stabilized 6 kilos of campo and it is as fresh as the day it was cut over a year on. The best stuff I have found is 'Lithium Grease', just spread a smear on iron slices all over on and then wipe off the excess it protects for at least 6 months... [meteorite-list] Mars Exploration Rover Update - October 10, 2005
http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status.html SPIRIT UPDATE: Spirit Preparing for Robotic Arm Work - sol 620-626, Oct 10, 2005: Spirit is healthy and still performing science in the summit area of Husband Hill. The rover has acquired a 360-degree panorama from the top of Husband Hill, and has performed remote sensing of other targets of interest. Spirit drove back down to the clean face of the rock outcrop called Hillary to find a good position to perform work with the robotic arm. Sol-by-sol summaries: Sol 620 to 622 (Sept. 30 to Oct. 2, 2005): While perched on the summit of Husband Hill, Spirit spent the weekend acquiring a 360-degree color mosaic. Team members took this opportunity to place the Moessbauer spectrometer on Spirit's compositional calibration target for a three-sol integration. The compositional calibration target provides an independent, external reference source for calibrating the alpha particle X-ray spectrometer and Moessbauer spectrometer. Both instruments also have their own internal calibration reference targets. The compositional calibration target is made of a piece of magnetite rock from Earth, bonded to an aluminum base plate and covered by a protective coating that the Moessbauer spectrometer cannot detect. The science team also wanted new measurements of the compositional calibration target with the alpha particle X-ray spectrometer to supplement measurements from sols 614 to 619, but rover planners saw a rock under the rover. If the alpha particle X-ray spectrometer were on the compositional calibration target, the rock abrasion tool would be too close to this hazard. The resolution was to do only a Moessbauer spectrometer integration. Sol 623: There is a fascinating outcrop at the summit called Hillary. From the panoramic camera position on top of the summit, Spirit could access only very dusty areas of Hillary. On sol 623, Spirit began the approach to the clean face. However, the drive did not take place due to a sequencing error. Sol 624: The second approach attempt succeeded, with a 12-meter (39-foot) drive. From the new location, Spirit imaged potential workspace for the robotic arm. The images allowed rover planners to determine the best way to bump into position for robotic arm work. Sol 625: A 3.4-meter (11.15-foot) bump put the desired target into the work space. However, the left front wheel is perched upon a small rock and not in full contact with the ground. Sol 626: Since engineers could not tell if the rover was 100-percent stable, the team decided not to deploy the robotic arm. Instead, the plan is for Spirit to perform small maneuvers. The hazard-avoidance cameras will take images at every step to stabilize the rover and confirm that it is in a safe position to perform robotic arm work. As of the end of sol 626, (Oct. 6, 2005), Spirit has driven 4,993 meters (3.10 miles). __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

[meteorite-list] Wild Horse, Colorado Meteorite Classification Note
Hello All, Re: The Wild Horse Meteorite http://www.meteoritearticles.com/files/wild_horse_crust_side_photo_1__35.2kb_.jpg Wild Horse Meteorite, cut surface: http://www.meteoritearticles.com/files/wild_horse_light_chondrules__37.8kb_.jpg Wild Horse Meteorite Thin Section in light from my photo lights. Pure white light. http://www.meteoritearticles.com/Wild_Horse_TS00a.jpg After cutting the Wild Horse meteorite, shown above, a little. Me, and fellow Kansas Met. Soc. member Jerry Calvert, thought the H5 unusual for the meteorite, due to it's abundance of chondrules. A type specimen and a (covered) thin section, was sent to Alan Rubin (UCLA) to get his thoughts. The following are Rubin's thoughts. I looked at the thin section of Wild Horse today and, as you suspect, it is not an H5. The chondrules are only a little recrystallized and there is low-Ca clinopyorxene in the chondrules. This phase is abundant in type-3, present in type-4 and absent in type-5 and -6 chondrites. From the degree of recrystallization and the abundance of low-Ca clinopyroxene, it looks like type-4 to me. Because the section is not a doubly polished one for the probe, I cannot analyze the grains to make sure it is an H chondrite (or look at the abundance of metal to make the same determination), but the chondrule sizes seem to fit the H group. So, my guess is that it is an H4. RE: [meteorite-list] New meteorite website
Hi Sara and list, this IS a wonderful, educational website! Thank you and all the people who helped collaborated. I loved to hear the sonic boom! My first! ;-) If I had seen the image of the dust trail left by the passage of the stony meteoroid at Tagish Lake, I would have known how one looks like when I asked the list about it a few weeks ago and it was the Minotaur launch out of Vandenberg. I will gladly refer to it and will refer the site to other people.
