[meteorite-list] Franconia strewnfield map ?
Hello to the List I was wondering if anyone was making a real map of the Franconia strewnfield in a rational way, as did Jim Krieg for Gold Basin ? Franconia delivers several different meteorites (chondrites, irons) so it could be cool to make a map with all coordinates of finds for a scientifical study of the area. Maybe it is the little fact that there are over 100 kilograms of that meteorite. How many collectors do you think there are? Maybe the problem is the seller. Re: [meteorite-list] Franconia strewnfield map ?
Hello Pierre and list members, I am sure some of you know that Lora Bleacher requested such a map. Jim Smaller knew many more of the other hunters in the area, so I provided the information that Ruben and I had gathered about the area to him. I have seen the paper that Lora wrote on line perhaps some knows the link? I am not sure if the map is available on line (I doubt it) I know the people who contributed to it got a copy. And of course this information is in the hands of anyone wishing to study it through ASU. On the subject of several different meteorites, I can finally say that one of the four that Ruben and I submitted, has finally been approved. However this information is not official until you see it in a bulletin, The meteorite is named: Warm Springs Wilderness. Classification: H4-6 genomict breccia, S2, W1 ASU has paired two of these stones by doing thin sections and complete micro probe work ups. Then Lora has also visually paired another six stones (100 to 200 gram range) and another 6 that need to be cut or larger windows made to be sure. The others have been tentatively approved, however a name change and probable numbering system will be used for probably 4 of the others in the area. The main name will probably be Sacramento Wash and then 001 and 002 and so on. I hope you noticed how many time I overused the word PROBALLY, I did this because the information could change before it make it into the next bulletin. Re: [meteorite-list] Warning, Virus on meteorite emails
Matteo and List members, Just because the email states the sender is Arizona Skies and Mark Bostick doesn't mean the infected email actually came from them. Most viruses, worms, and trojans these days spoof the sender information by taking email addresses from the infected system and using those addresses as the sender information. Needless to say, you should all be using good current antivirus software and firewalls on your respective systems. If you are not using either of these, please contact me off line and I'll provide info on where you can get good freeware. [meteorite-list] Ibitira and the HED parent body Vesta (?)
Hello Ibitirarians, Eucritarians and Listoids :-) Ibitira is a basaltic eucrite, and, like all the other eucrites, was believed to have come from the HED parent body, the asteroid 4 Vesta, but ... according to an article by D.W. Mittlefehldt in MAPS 40-5, 2005, pp.665-677, there are (at least) 5 differentiated parent asteroids for the eucrites in our collections: 1. the HED parent body 2. the mesosiderite parent body 3. the angrite parent body 4. the NWA 011 parent body 5. the Ibitira parent body How does he know? Because there are differences in certain elemental ratios, oxygen isotopic compositions, alkali element contents. The differences are subtle but distinct. Reference: D.W. MITTLEFEHLDT (2005) Ibitira, a basaltic achondrite from a distinct parent asteroid and implications for the DAWN mission (MAPS 40-5, 2005, pp.665-677). Best wishes from Bernd, ... .. happy owner of 43 eucrites and 4 eucrite thin sections, among these, an Ibitira thin section from Cap'n Blood and a small but beautiful 0.21-gram partslice from M. Cottingham. Under crossed polars, Ibitira is a sparkling fireworks of colorful pyroxenes (pigeonite and augite), white plagioclase (An95 = almost pure anorthite), trydimite and ilmenite grains. My 0.21-gram partslice shows several of those vesicles that Ibitira is famous for. __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
[meteorite-list] How to recognise lunar, martian, other achondrites only by crust ?
Hello to the List. I was wondering how some meteorite hunters have the ability to recognise rare achondrites (lunar, martian, eucrites, diogenites) only by the look of the crust ? I'm really amazed how some lucky meteorite collectors found rare achondrites in a box of stones from morrocan dealers. What are the characteristics of martian, lunar or HED crusts ? Re: [meteorite-list] How to recognise lunar, martian, other achondrites only by crust ?
Hello to the List. I was wondering how some meteorite hunters have the ability to recognise rare achondrites (lunar, martian, eucrites, diogenites) only by the look of the crust ? I'm really amazed how some lucky meteorite collectors found rare achondrites in a box of stones from morrocan dealers. Its not soo difficult that its looks like. Im not specialist in that matter but when You have box full of crapy chondrites, recognize achondrite is not difficult. Usually I also use magnet and loupe. This helps. Crust can say You alot but more You will see inside broken fragments that most specimens have. If specimen have really weak magnetism then You are looking for chondruls on crust and inside broken fragments. If You really cant find any its Your decission to buy it or not. Its alvays chance that You will find achondrite or, if You have no luck amphoterite. With not magnetic specimens its more easy becouse this can be ordinary rock or achondrite. And I'm sure that everyone can recognize in 90% what is meteorite and what is not. OK, ok except martians and lunars. They are the most not-meteorite-like stones for me. Including colorfull Dho90x series from Mr Haberer. Without crust they looks like ordinary rocks. So its not only crust but many other things that decide about purchase. Ofcourse I not telling here about clear examples like diogenites or eucrites with shiny fresh black crust and white interior without magnetism. :)) But on finish its alvays Your decision, Your feelings and experience. Soon we can train ourselves. Lets go to Munich :)) PS. In Munich I will be pround to show You my new Urelite with quartz :) that I buy last year in Munich. Everyone from Haag, Farmer to ET and Hmani and many other people was wrong the same as me when they look at this stone. Urelite looking stone is ordinary urelite-like stone. I make one mistake, I not make glass test. But no pain, I will find this funny maroccan dealer this year and someone else get chance to buy this importand new urelite this year in Munich. So its sometimes gamble. When You play You can win or You can lose. But on market we see only winners, but never loosers. -[ MARCIN CIMALA ]-[ I.M.C.A.#3667 ]- http://www.Meteoryt.net [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.PolandMET.com [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.Gao-Guenie.com GSM +48(607)535 195 [ Member of Polish Meteoritical Society ] __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Hello List, Just caught the end of The Earths Core on the national Geographic channel. There was an interview with the owner of the Auckland meteorite as well as footage showing the impact hole and the incredible oriented meteorite. Like I said, I seen the end of the show so you may have to wait till the last 15 minutes of the show to see anything meteorite related. But, its always nice to watch shows featuring great meteorites... and believe me Id give up quite a few collection pieces to get the oriented Auckland meteorite. The show will air tomorrow all evening repetitiously from 4to 9 pm on the National Geographic channel. For my neighbors here in the Midwest that have Comcast cable that's channel 273 Enjoy! Hi Peter, I will say that your stone looks like a Djermaia. Next time we meet, ( Ensisheim 2006 probably ) please bring it, there are some lines which are caracteristics on the crust. Mine was cut and checked by the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris, where are the Type specimen. Djermaia is xenolithic. My 2.9 kg individual has been declared last year in the Met Bull. Bob's is still unreferenced. Best regards. Michel FRANCO, PS I will let this beauty go.
