2005-11-15 Thread Carl Saconn

Geoff,

Hello. Thanks for keeping us posted about Steve's awesome find. Just had a
few questions that you might or might not be able to answer.

Can you post some close up shots of it? Just wondering about it's
condition. Is there much rust on it's surface? Any cracks? How is it
adjusting to the enviroment now that it's out of the ground? Was if found
completely intact or were there smaller fragments surrounding it? Any way of
determing if there was a crater? How far was it found from the other main
piece? Any info on the metal detector used? Are you searching for other
pieces? Any serious purchase offers? Any chance it might be displayed in
Tucson?

Steve did a great job on the Today show!

Thanks again. - Carl

Jeff K. posted:

I have also found it quite amazing that this find seems to have generated
such a vast interest across the US. Maybe even more than Park Forest.

Dear Jeff and List:

You've made a very interesting observation Jeff. I also believe the press
coverage on this is much greater than Park Forest. We know of print/TV
stories in Canada, England, Germany, and in your home country of Australia
too (Melbourne Times) in addition to close to 100 news stories here in
the U.S.

I think the reasons for this are two-fold:

1) Park Forest was a random Act of God-type event. Once the story has been
written, there isn't a lot that can be done in terms of a follow-up,
except for those of us with specialized interest (i.e. How can I get a
piece?). The Brenham story has human interest: here is a professional
meteorite hunter and his partner who came up with a good strategy -- after
ten years of thinking about Brenham -- and were then tremendously
successful. Newspapers love big success stories, *and* treasure hunts,
*and* local interest -- Steve was born in Kansas, so we have all three.

2) There was no sustained effort to promote the Park Forest story as far
as I know, and why should there be? Phil and I have written press
releases, sent emails, faxes, and photos all over the country. I hired a
P.R. expert as my media advisor; we also have a new website under
construction. Steve has done multiple interviews (even I did two
interviews) and has staged public events: the big pallasite was on display
at the Afton Observatory near Wichita on Saturday evening, and local TV
and papers were there to see it.

This is a great story, and a fun one, and we've worked really hard at
promoting it. These things don't happen by themselves. Glad to see it's
working!

What's really interesting to me is how a story like this galvanizes the
public, and suddenly people are finding meteorites under their beds and
scouring the internet for more information about them. I bet all this
media attention will generate more than one new meteorite hunter. When
people hear about a Million Dollar Rock being found in a farmer's field,
a lot of them want to get in on the action : )

My website has been hammered with nearly 2000 hits this weekend (about
300%

extra) with people searching for Pallasites, Brenham, etc, etc. I've also
had a plethora of emails from people wanting to know how much their
meteorites (aka Normal Rocks) are worth.

Same here. I've also had several crackpot phone calls from people who have
found meteorites. One of the was really scary. The guy said he'd found a
6 by 10 ft. meteorite that looked just like dolomite. D'ya know what
dolomite lerks like? he bellowed.

He then went on to tell me he'd like me to help him with his book on the
other side of evolution which shows that feller Darwin's ideas was based
on a load 'o waffles. At that point I excused myself.

For our friends in Canada, Discovery Channel Canada will be airing a new
piece on Steve and the big Brenham either tonight or tomorrow night on
their Daily Planet segment. We believe that it will be shown in the U.S.
next week, and will try to get exact showtimes for you.

Steve is finally on his way home, so hopefully he'll be able to post to
the List soon. Thanks to everyone who sent emails of congratulations. I
have been keeping him up-to-date, and we've saved copies off all of your
posts.

Finally:

PLEASE don't forget to send your Joel Schiff gifts to our friend Maria at:
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

We've heard from a lot of people, but hope to hear from a lot more. If
you've enjoyed reading Meteorite magazine please send something to the
fund so we can acquire a really nice thank you for Joel during his
recovery. Also, write to me off-List if you'd like your remaining
subscription for M to be put towards our fund.

Thank you, best wishes, to all,

Geoff N.

Hi Steve (Chicago) and List Members,

Thank you Steve for the kind words.

These last couple weeks have certainly been in recognition for Steve
(Arkansas) and Phil's monumental find. A lot of work and time went into
this, along with believing in a dream. Way to go all of you guys that put so
much into your accomplishment (not to mention their wives for letting them
'do their thing'). I have learned quite a bit hearing a small part of your
dream and realization of the moment.

The last month shows that no matter who you are, how you collect, deal, or
travel; stay on course of your dream, be determined and you will reach your
goal(s)!

Best regards and happy hunting to all (My early Christmas wish for all...),
Greg

Hello all. We are please to announce another
spectacular new achondrite-NWA 3368(prov.). This is a
particularly showy and beautiful Eucrite, having
diogenite clasts and extremely fine grained basaltic
clasts embedded in a light matrix having a pink hue!
Many of the larger slices also have sizeable pieces of
metal showing! This is a visually striking eucrite,
and the scientists that classified it dubbed it the
pink eucrite.

Specimens are now up on the website.

2005-11-15 Thread Adam Hupe
Dean,

I do not appreciate your post the List before checking into the facts. You
are the one being asinine as you say for wrongfully bringing this up. I
posted once last week and once again this week. That makes one AD post per
week. I have observed this rule very carefully unlike a few members who
demonstrate disrespect for the rest of us by ignoring Art's wishes. If
everybody posted more than once a week the List would became clogged again
with advertisements. I personally think Art should throw off anybody who
abuses this rule including yourself who has posted multiple advertisements
in a single week since the rule was adapted.

Take care and show some respect for the rest of us,

Adam

I realize that the new rule was only put there to
prevent maximun abuse by certain people but when you
guys are going to be assanine about it when other

Dean...

Adam posted once on 11 Nov (Saturday) and again today 15 Nov (Tuesday).
Given the common convention that a week begins on Sunday and end on
Saturday, he seems to have met the criteria for once a week.

From what I've seen in my limited time here, you have a good rep and you're
respected by the community at large. Don't stoop to this type of bashing.
It doesn't do you credit.

Theoretically it can be from Saturday to Tuesday continously, can't it?
But then not before next week on Monday.
Once per week means to me, once per week and not once every 8th day.

take it always at the same hour.

[meteorite-list] RE: Ad - 77 Auctions Ending, Great Stuff!

2005-11-15 Thread Christian Anger

Oh man, oh man

I do not want to treat anybody here.

Are that the real problems or the real subjects which we (should) discuss
here in this list ?

Are the hate tirades showing up again ?

Aren't we grown up enough to let that kinds of subjects go ?

Oh guys, why to discriminate other members ?

I recall the subject when I started a discussion some months ago about a
carbonaceous Chondrite versus a Rumuritiite ?

The first reaction we got was like hey shout your mouth, don't have doubts
about a written word in the list

What was the result ? The problem was solved in a very fair way - although
I was told not to discuss it in the list - I was told to do this in private
mail.

I accepted this and we solved this case and the opponent was a very
honourable man and I pulled of my hat for that gracious guest.
That showed up, what the list is here for.

B U T I was told not to put differences to an open discussion to the
list.

I held my word so...why do we start again with this bullsh.

We are members here from Europe and we are not award, we don't practice this
way of life. I think I speak for many of the European guys.

Nobody, really nobody, and again really nobody of us is interested in this
stuff.

If somebody like Stefan (Ralew) or Svend Buhl or me or Hanno puts subjects
to the list, the interest and feedback is very low, but the feedback and the
rumour of subjects like this is like an explosion !!

How sad..

(to let all the good energy be wasted into nothing)

Let me know if we use this list to discuss the matter of meteorites or if we
use that list for fighting against each other ...

[meteorite-list] GREAT METEORITE HUNTERS

2005-11-15 Thread Steve Arnold, Chicago!!
Hello and good evening list.I guess I did fail to mention other meteorite
hunters. And yes I know that it is not exclusive to the USA.There are many
from all over the world.But to me,HAAG FARMER,STEVE ARNOLD,(IMB),THE
HUPES' to me are the best that I know.I guess that I should have made that
point more clear. For that I am sorry.I know that there are more from the
USA,but these are the names that get the most attention. And of course
NININGER is the best ever.He paved the way for all future hunters.Even
when park forest fell,I only found about 50 grams of the meteorite.I am no
meteorite hunter and I never will, but I did find park forest
specimens.Heck, the first piece I found was a 1.1 gram small fragment which
I donated to JOEL SCHIFF because of the great job he has done with
meteorite magazine. As far as I know, that is the only piece of park forest
he has received. But I will restate that there are many good meteorite
hunters out there worldwide. But to me,the names that I have mentioned are
the best in the world.I am not trying to take away anything from all the
other great hunters.I guess we all owe a debt of graditude to all the
hunters worldwide.

 Hi,

There is a huge difference between
 detecting and discriminating an INDIVIDUAL
radio signal from the Earth at interstellar
distances on the one hand and merely
detecting the totality of the Earth's
 radio signals at interstellar distances,
 on the other.

Surrounding the Earth is a shell of
EM transmissions out to a radius of 94
light years. At the outer edge of that
shell is Marconi's transmission of the
letter S in 1901. Faint. But at radii
of 84 light years and again at 57 light
years, quantum leaps in intensity occur.
(That's the onset of commercial radio
 and commercial television respectively.)

The TOTAL radio emissions of the Earth
are TWICE AS BRIGHT AS THE SUN. Every radio
astronomer within that inner 100 light year
sphere (if there ARE any radio astronomers
out there) is confronted with the paradox
of a normal type G star which has an optically
invisible companion which has twice the
luminosity in the radio spectrum as the
visible star! Studies of the motion of the
invisible companion would show it to be
in orbit around the normal star.

There is only one possible explanation
of an optico-radio binary star. That is, that
the normal star has a planet which is SCREAMING
its head off in the radio spectrum! And it's
only getting noisier with every passing year,
louder and louder! As for directed transmissions,
we already have interplanetary radar signals
that are 10,000,000,000 times brighter than
 the Sun!

As an interstellar neighbor, the Earth is
kind of like that guy on the subway toting
the 300 pound ghetto blaster! If you have any
hope that the aliens haven't noticed us yet,
you can forget all about them.

Which is why I find the beautiful dream of
SETI to be just that: a beautiful dream. A Kardashev
Level Two civilization (one which utlizes the full
energy resources of an entire solar system) should
be roughly the radio luminosity of a QUASAR! It
would be visible in the EM spectrum at 100,000
light years distant (if the civilization survived
 for that long).

In 300 to 500 years, WE will (I hope) be a
fledging Kardashev Level Two civilization. There
will be millions of powerful comet-hunting radars
in the Kuiper Belt and the Inner Oort Cloud, billions
of radar beacons on every rock in the system,
trillions of TV channels (how many re-runs of the
ancient classics like The Brady Bunch?), and an
inconceivable number of interplanetary cell phones
(most of them on hold and playing space elevator
music). Our solar system will probably be the
brightest radio source in the Milky Way Galaxy.

If there are any aliens out there, you know,
great wise space-traveling advanced aliens, WHERE
are their home systems and WHY are there no bright
artificial radio sources? If there is an interstellar
civilization or many such, you shouldn't be able
to point a radio detector to the heavens without
having your ears blown off. We should be awash in
a cacophony of re-runs of the Arcturian I Love
Lucy or the Tau Ceti Milton Berle.

I say this as a person who, for many years,
DONATED more money to SETI than I spent on, say,
buying meteorites, or even books, so I was not
without hope in that dream. But I have concluded
that it was just that... a dream.

I think that to be listed as a great meteorite hunter, you need to have
found a meteorite or two, there are some called meteorite hunters who

Speaking of the earliest meteorite hunters...

Actually, at Danebury England, in about 500 BC, iron age 'meteorite
hunters' buried a meteorite (an H5) in a pit in the iron age hill fort,
 does that count!?

Thanks to all the dozens (almost) list members
who came to my rescue and sent the proper spelling
of hors d'oeuvres even though I was a bad boy - but
my ONE excuse is that it IS a meteorite article! Ha! You
will have to wait until the next issue of the now ONLY
meteorite publication, METEORITE TIMES.
Dean, perhaps you are confused and do not know
that Greg and Adam, though they have the same last name,
are primarily operating independently of one another,
so, there may be weeks when they each advertise, but
that is as separate entities.
Anyway, it is much nicer with fewer ads - thanks
all.

The first reaction we got was like hey shout your mouth, don't have
 doubts
about a written word in the list

What was the result ? The problem was solved in a very fair way -
 although
I was told not to discuss it in the list - I was told to do this in
 private
 mail.

I accepted this and we solved this case and the opponent was a very
honourable man and I pulled of my hat for that gracious guest.
That showed up, what the list is here for.

B U T I was told not to put differences to an open discussion to the
 list.

I held my word so...why do we start again with this bullsh.

We are members here from Europe and we are not award, we don't practice
 this
way of life. I think I speak for many of the European guys.

Nobody, really nobody, and again really nobody of us is interested in this
 stuff.

If somebody like Stefan (Ralew) or Svend Buhl or me or Hanno puts subjects
to the list, the interest and feedback is very low, but the feedback and
 the
rumour of subjects like this is like an explosion !!

 How sad..

(to let all the good energy be wasted into nothing)

Let me know if we use this list to discuss the matter of meteorites or if
 we
use that list for fighting against each other ...

Please excuse this form letter, but I would appreciate your help in
locating a faculty member interested in the geochemistry of
extraterrestrial materials.

This is a position we were given to help us build up the Arkansas Center
for Space and Planetary Sciences, particularly as a center for
extraterrestrial sample analysis, tenable in the geosciences
department. We have also been given the funds to establish an analytical
laboratory consisting of low and high resolution ICPMS instruments, and
many other relevant analytical instruments are available elsewhere on the
campus or nearby. Details are provided in the attachment, and I would be
happy to answer any further questions. The center's website is
http://spacecenter.uark.edu.

This is an exciting time in space and planetary sciences at Arkansas. The
center is growing rapidly, and the university is experiencing extraordinary
inputs of private money as the region grows in population and
importance. Recently, the university received the largest ever private
gift to a public university, the fifth largest to any university, when the
Walton family donated $300M. A recent fund drive netted $1B. Such a large
sum for a small university means that the funds are affecting all units.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

That is an interesting point Jerry made! Now if they'd said Meteorite
Finder instead of Meteorite Hunter, then there would be cause for
complaint if the title were applied to someone who'd never found a meteorite
before.

So ... under that definition, I can say I am a hunter of the perfect
woman, Loch Ness Monster, Atlantis, and the 6 elusive numbers for the next
drawing of the Powerball Lottery. Even though I have never found any of
those before, I can truthfully say I have hunted for them.

I have found two meteorites before so, sad though that low number may
be, I am actually a finder of meteorites and I can even use the plural
because I found more than one ... therefore, in spite of what my first wife
said, two times definitely count!

Re: [meteorite-list] AD: Olivine Diogenite at $4.58 gram right now!

2005-11-15 Thread Adam Hupe
I did not engage in an argument today. Somebody wrongly accused me in public
of what you have been doing and I responded once with facts and then left it
alone. I will only make one more comment. Art made this rule because he was
tired of all of the Spam tying up the List.

Please show everybody who follows the rules the same respect is all I am
asking.

Adam

Adam, bout time you jumped in. I did it just to see what you would say.
Everyone is getting tired of your act, your constant reminders of just how
good you are on the list, every ad telling how you go by the rules and
 others don't.
Spare me the crying game, you broke the rules already today by fighting
with
 dean on the list.
Get over yourself. Stop telling everyone what to do, or open your own
list
 so you can.
I have not said a word to you or about you so please leave me alone

This Advertisement demonstrates a serious lack of respect for other List
members and Art's rules. Didn't an argument just erupt today over
breaking
the once a week Advertisement rule? If everybody posted as many ads per
  day
or a week to the List as you do, it would become a mess again. Mike,
have
some respect. You have broken this rule every week. What right do you
have
  to Spam the List?

Re: [meteorite-list] AD: Olivine Diogenite at $4.58 gram right now!

2005-11-15 Thread Michael Farmer

Yes daddy, I will be good.
Adam, you fought with Dean, then you started a fight with me.
I think you are just mad that the meteorite you were selling for several
hundred dollars per gram now sells for less than some chondrites. How much
would this piece have cost your customers? $30,000, $50,000?

Again, leave me alone, and I will leave you alone, and all will be happy.
Play with your new company ran by your girlfriend (out of your home) and
keep telling everyone about the board members all over the world. It makes
for a nice concept.

[meteorite-list] Natures Quest

2005-11-15 Thread Michael Farmer
I retract my statements about the un named company I accused Adam of
running. I was informed that Natures Quest could be mistaken for my topic
and wish to say I know little about that company and do not wish to make any
statements against it.
I have not fought with anyone in a long while (Matteo doesnt count, he is
too easy) and want to keep it that way. There must be something in the
water today that got people all over the world up in arms on this list.
Perhaps the full moon has something to do with it.

Adam and I will keep our disputes off list.
Sorry and thanks to all.

Re: [meteorite-list] AD: Olivine Diogenite at $4.58 gram right now!

2005-11-15 Thread dean bessey
Adam did you buy this list or did art make you
policemenn?
When you attacked me last week it had nothing to do
with the holier than thau I should be policemen
attaitude that you would have everybody belive (Some
list members were even taken in - the same as when you
try and sell your rusted L6s as the most important
meteorite ever - basically a fraud overstating
importance).
If your intention was actually save the list, you
would have quitely emailed me or the actual list owner
complaining rather than spamming the list with more
personal attacks.
You basically dont like competation and are in the
same boat as the pellisons.
Leave everybody alone. The list would be a much nicer
place without you constantly starting attacks. Nobody
(Not even you guys) have been abusing the list or
sending to many harassing ads lately.
Stop prentending to somehow be better than everybody
else and leave everybody alone. Or at least complain
in private to art to see if he has a problem rather
than getting everybody involved in a sludge match that
nobody wins.
I wont keep you from your next beer any longer mow.

[meteorite-list] Stones From The Stars: The Unsolved Mysteries of Meteorites

2005-11-15 Thread Darren Garrison
Anyone else read this book? I found a copy on Amazon for 50 cents, and I'm not
sure if I got my
money's worth. I'm only about half-way through, but the author is consistantly
married to the idea
that there are these mysterious reasons that stone meteorites choose to land
in specific areas of
the world, while iron meteorites choose to land in other areas, among other
weird ideas.

Dean,

My brother and I are two different people. His name is Greg. He lives 3000
miles away from me. I never made a post about you last week so please get
the facts straight.

A beer and an apology from you would be nice,
