where is this 900 kg. of this pallasite, for the
moment I have seen only 3-4 slices for salein
Munich many have say not have seen any piece of this
 pallasite.

 Matteo

this time I must agree with Matteo.
I not see any piece of Fukang in Munich. Some of people I know also first
time hear about this fact from this list emails. So or this pieces was
under table material not for our eyes or we should look for meteorites
also on non marrocan-tables.
But if there is 900kg and Tucson will be swamped with it so why Munich was
not swamped with it ?
So who saw any Fukang in Munich ? Any photos ? How much pieces was there ?

Re: [meteorite-list] dong qinqin je and fukang

2005-12-28 Thread Michael Farmer
I saw many pieces in Munich, there was at least 10 kilos of chunks sitting
right across from Karl Sprich's table. I don't know who the seller was, but
it was a jewelry table. It is not surprising that people in Munich would not
all see it. I saw Vachislav, and for four more days I could not find him and
he had a table! Munich is busy, crowded, and large. Tucson is the same.
Every year people come into my room, asking about something they saw
somewhere and they want to go back and buy it but don't remember which hotel
or room it was in.

Bud Eisler had some kilos of it in Japan as well.
(I am sure Matteo will comment that a spy of his in Tokyo didn't see any).
That guy is amazing, the CIA should hire him for all his investigative
skills all over the world.

Re: AW: [meteorite-list] dong qinqin je and fukang

2005-12-28 Thread Kashuba, Ontario, California

Mark, Michael and List,

It was Lot 8084, 910 grams with an estimate of $18,000 to $22,000.

http://www.bonhams.com/cgi-bin/public.sh/pubweb/publicSite.r?sContinent=USAscreen=lotdetailsNoFlashiSaleItemNo=2651951iSaleNo=13327sServer=http://images2.bonhams.com/sPath=2005-10/10/7153424-48-1.jpg#

It does not show on the Sale Results page.

http://www.bonhams.com/cgi-bin/public.sh/pubweb/publicSite.r?sContinent=USAscreen=ResultsXMLiSaleNo=13327

Bob Jackson and I handled the slice at the preview. It was very heavily
coated. On the back side at one edge there was a small area of
discoloration that might have been rust creeping along under the clear coat.
Do we know yet if this is a ruster?

[meteorite-list] Fukang and Canadians in Tokyo.

2005-12-28 Thread Michael Farmer
It is a ruster, several people who bought pieces in Tucson last year have
complained about rust. I will pass on this one. If the Chinese get froggy
and decide to repatriate their stolen treasure, they will come after it.
Lest you all forget, the just conducted raids all over Australia with the
Australian and Chinese government, confiscating stolen fossils from China.
This is the largest pallasite in the world. That is a treasure, not some old
chondrite that nobody cares about. It is being said that the Chinese already
know about it.

On another note, two representatives from the Royal Ontario Museum were sent
to the Tokyo show to look for and report anything being sold that was from
Canada. They harassed several people, including George Heslop, for selling
Canadian fossils without paperwork, they threatened him, and made the show
owner force him to remove them from his table. It is clear that governments
are getting serious about their stuff (with or without cause).

It does not show on the Sale Results page.

Bob Jackson and I handled the slice at the preview. It was very heavily
coated. On the back side at one edge there was a small area of
discoloration that might have been rust creeping along under the clear
coat. Do we know yet if this is a ruster?

[meteorite-list] Asteroid Vesta A Speck in Space, But It's Visible

2005-12-28 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/science/20051228--1c28star.html

Asteroid Vesta a speck in space, but it's visible
San Diego Unon-Tribune
December 28, 2005

In the void between Mars and Jupiter lie millions - perhaps billions -
of rocks known as asteroids. Most range in size from tiny pebbles to
chunks the size of mountains. The largest of these, known as Ceres, is a
mere 600 miles across, yet contains nearly half the mass of all
asteroids combined. It was also the first such body to be found - on New
Year's Day, 1801.

The fourth to be discovered was Vesta. With a diameter of 326 miles -
about the size of Arizona - Vesta appears to even the largest telescopes
as a speck of light the size of a dime seen from five miles away.

Astronomers have learned that Vesta reflects 25 percent of all sunlight
falling onto its surface, and this accounts for its brightness. (The
moon, by comparison, reflects only 12 percent.) Vesta holds the
distinction of being the brightest of all asteroids, occasionally
appearing to binoculars - even the unaided eye - from a dark rural site.
Right now is one of those times - a time known as Vesta's opposition.

Opposition, as regular readers might recall, is a time when a celestial
object appears opposite in the sky from the sun. It's during this time
that a body lies closest to Earth and reaches its brightest. Vesta
officially reaches this point Jan. 5, when it lies only 143,781,413
miles away.

Dedicated stargazers may wish to brave the cold winter evenings to scan
the eastern sky for Vesta. After dark, find Gemini, the twins, marked by
the bright stars Castor and Pollux. Below is a more-faint star known as
Kappa Geminorum. Aim binoculars toward this star, sliding them downward
so the star is near the top of your field of view. You should see a star
pattern like that in the accompanying illustration, with Vesta near the
center.

To be sure it's Vesta, make a sketch of the stars you see and return
night after night. You should soon notice that one of these stars is
moving through this stellar pattern.

This, of course, is no star. It's Vesta.

[meteorite-list] Genesis Crash Inquiry Helps Stardust Return

2005-12-28 Thread Ron Baalke

http://space.com/missionlaunches/051228_genesis_stardust.html

Genesis Crash Inquiry Helps Stardust Return
By Leonard David
space.com
28 December 2005

Back in 2004, when NASA's Genesis return sample capsule tumbled from the
sky and slammed into the Utah desert, scientists quite literally had to
pick up the pieces of the mission.

Delicate wafers holding precious samples of atoms and ions from puffs of
solar wind that Genesis accumulated while lingering at Lagrange Point
1 - an area in space between Earth and the Sun - were shattered to bits.

Since the crash landing, researchers have been hard at work pulling
science data from the fragments - but it's a far tougher task than
originally planned when the $260 million Genesis mission lifted off in
August of 2001.

Soon-to-be released findings from a study of the Genesis mishap have
brought to light several lessons learned - action items that NASA's next
sample return mission team for Stardust are embracing for that capsule's
upcoming January 15th Utah landing.

The $212 million Stardust mission blasted off in February 1999 - more than
two years earlier than the Genesis departure. It is coming home next
month after a nearly seven-year space trek.

Test, test, test, and test

The lesson learned from Genesis is straightforward, said space engineer
Michael Ryschkewitsch who chaired the Genesis Mishap Investigation Board
(MIB) and is now deputy center director of the NASA Goddard Space Flight
Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

It's the same motto that we've all had for years and years and years.
Test, test, test, and test - this business is very hard and you can never
be too careful. That's not to say that anybody in the process was not
careful. There were people that were trying very hard - and sometimes
things don't go the way you want them to, Ryschkewitsch told SPACE.com.

Ryschkewitsch said that the MIB findings are to appear in two volumes:
One, an engineering autopsy that looks at the causes for the Genesis
crash landing itself, the other volume focused on the ground recovery
procedures that took place on the capsule's plow-down in Utah on
September 8, 2004.

NASA's chief medical officer was not pleased with the initial stages of
the ground recovery actions that took place. An MIB subteam was formed
to look into this matter, as well as the overall training of personnel
and steps taken by post-landing ground teams.

There was not enough training by all of the people involved so that
everybody had the same knowledge, Ryschkewitsch said. In the minutes
following impact of the Genesis return sample capsule, he noted, there
was a conflict between ground units regarding what team was in charge
and what procedures they were operating to.

Then the people that had been intended to be in charge under the normal
operation 'took over' and from that point on everything was okay,
Ryschkewitsch added.

But what's the multi-million dollar answer to the question of why
Genesis took the fall in the first place?

Proximate cause

Back in October of 2004, the MIB had quickly identified a likely direct
cause of the failure of Genesis' parachute system to open.

The MIB - analyzing the badly crunched Genesis capsule - said the likely
cause was a design error that involved the orientation of gravity-switch
devices. Those tiny switches sense the deceleration caused by the
craft's high-speed entry into the atmosphere - switches that were then to
initiate the timing sequence that deployed the capsule's drogue
parachute, followed by release of a parafoil, followed by an in-the-air
helicopter capture.

That critical sequence did not happen. The capsule smacked into a
pre-determined landing site at the Utah Test and Training Range (UTTR),
a vast and unoccupied salt flat controlled by the U.S. Army and Air Force.

The inappropriate positioning of the gravity-switch devices
(g-switches) - upside down - led to the Genesis capsule's less-than-soft
touchdown. That wrongly placed piece of hardware was installed in 1998.

The g-switch problem has been identified by the Genesis MIB as the
proximate cause, Ryschkewitsch said. That most immediate cause
spurred the MIB team to dig back and trace how that happened and how the
problem was not addressed prior to launch.

Installation error

Lockheed Martin Space Systems of Denver, Colorado designed, built and
operated the Genesis spacecraft, as well as the Stardust probe now en
route to Earth.

While the fundamental structures between Genesis and Stardust are
different, Ryschkewitsch said a great deal of commonality exists in the
avionics within the two systems, as well as procedural handling of the
entry capsule. Therefore, in some ways, Genesis is a technological
look-alike of Stardust, but in other avenues they are dissimilar.

That is why lessons learned from Genesis became a heads-up in some ways
for those dealing with the incoming Stardust spacecraft and its prized
catch of interstellar and comet particles.

Ryschkewitsch said that Genesis

kilo's of the fukang pallasite, with reports of stones totalling 700 and
1400 kilo's.To me that equals 2100 kilo's.So then where is all of it?With
reports at munich several kilo's were spotted, the main mass is at ASU, and
some here and there through out the world. For something that was found
last year, there is alot of it,but it seems that no one knows where it all
resides.I just hope some resides in tucson. Also what about DONG UJIMQIN
QI?The only place I ever see any is from mike farmer on ebay.I hear that
it is a really nice pallasite. Is there going to be any in tucson? These 2
are just really neat sounding meteorite names.Anymore thoughts on this

Hi list.I think I got the dong right this time. There must be more than 900
kilo's of the fukang pallasite, with reports of stones totalling 700 and
1400 kilo's.To me that equals 2100 kilo's.So then where is all of it?With
reports at munich several kilo's were spotted, the main mass is at ASU, and
some here and there through out the world.
These 2
are just really neat sounding meteorite names.Anymore thoughts on this
enique thread?

Re: [meteorite-list] Dong UJIMQIN qi and fukang

2005-12-28 Thread Arizona Skies Meteorites
Steve! You've really got to pay attention. The Fukang
pallasite weighed ~1000kg, not 900kg, not 1400kg and
not 2100kg. We've already been over where it is now
located the last time you asked, so please look back
through the list archives to answer that question.
Dong UJIMQIN qi is a mesosiderite. We were recently
offered over 3 kilos of it, which we declined, so I
would bet more is on its way, and it may make it to
Tucson. As a consideration to list members could you
please do not keep asking the same questions over and
over and again, ok?

Thanks so much see you in Tucson!

[meteorite-list] Plagerism and Thievery

2005-12-28 Thread Impactika

Greg and List,
Ron jailbird Ferrell continues to amaze! In his latest catalog he has
plagiarized your work and paper. Also in the same catalog he is offering to
sell
Xerox copies of my copyrighted hand colored block print of the Fall of the
Ensisheim Thunderstone.
How is that for unmitigated Gall and Thievery! I have previously notified
him by registered mail of my intent to protect my copyrighted work. He
previously said he would not sell them anymore, but here is again. He is a
scourge on
this planet.
