RE: [meteorite-list] Need some help with chondrite preparation.
Gday Mike, probably what you want, is the same as what I want, a flat lap, this is a disc that rotates like an old vinyl LP. You can get them from eBay in various grades of diamond grit, you of course need the flat lap machine to drive them, or make your own. When you are done grinding out all the cutting and other marks down to say a 3000 grit, then change to a polishing lap and use tin oxide or cerium oxide powder, or use a special diamond polish lap pre impregnated with diamond dust. Failing having a flat lap machine, try what I use at the moment. I used to have jars of loose grit and use them on a sheet of thick glass, start with the coarse first and work your way finer and finer, every time you change grits, everything must be scrubbed like in a hospital to make sure NO coarse grains are left to scratch your next stage finer grind or polish, otherwise its, back one step and then continue. Scrub the stone you are polishinng, the glass and your finger nails too. I ran out of loose grit a while ago, I am unable to source any more, so, I am using at the moment, Wet and Dry paper with the sheet of glass underneath, I don't know if it has the same name overseas, grit paper maybe, it comes with all the various sized grits impregnated onto it. Used mainly in the automotive paint industry. Sizes of grit, e.g. 80, 120, 240, 300, 600, 800, 1200, 1600, 2400, 3200 etc, etc 80 is very, very coarse, 3200 is super fine, pre polish size grit. Try not to jump too far between grades as it will take longer to polish out the scratches from the previous step. If you can't find tin oxide or cerium oxide from any lapidary suppliers (rock polishers) try good old toothpaste, for a polish paste, or a substance known as rouge, which is basically Iron Oxide. When moving the stone over the glass with the grit or polish. Also, when moving the stone over the grinding medium, move it in a figure eight (8) otherwise you will end up with bevels on your supposeddly flat stone. If you move it in figure eights, it will come out dead flat. One more thing, while doing it all manually, put some elbow grease into it, press hard, make sure it is wet. Some people use oil instead of water, up to your preferences. I hope that has been of some help mate. Good luck. Yours faithfully, Kevin Forbes. VK3UKF. The 2006 Tucson Show EZ-Guide, a pocket book of their almost phone book sized show guide, was of interest to meteorite collectors this year. Hi Mark: Thanks for the nice comments on that. I worked closely with Xpo Press on the EZ-Guide. This was the first year the guide was published, and it seemed very popular with show attendees. As well as writing the short piece on Steve's Brenham, and designing his ad, I designed the cover and provided the photos. You might be interested to know that the meteorite slice, center left, is the Huckitta from the Oscar Monnig Gallery's collection, and the center photo was taken at the old Ramada Inn University, outside Blaine Reed's room at night. [meteorite-list] Researchers Describe Discovery of Pluto's New Moons
The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory Office of Communications and Public Affairs Laurel, Maryland Media Contact: Michael Buckley (240) 228-7536 or (443) 778-7536 [EMAIL PROTECTED] February 22, 2006 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE RESEARCHERS DESCRIBE DISCOVERY OF PLUTO'S NEW MOONS New Hubble Images Offer Best View yet of Distant Planet and its Three Satellites In the Feb. 23 issue of the journal Nature, a team led by Dr. Hal Weaver of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, Md., describes its discovery of two new moons around Pluto - a finding that made the ninth planet the first Kuiper Belt object known to have multiple satellites. In a companion paper, discovery team members led by Dr. Alan Stern of the Southwest Research Institute, Boulder, Colo., conclude that the two small moons were very likely born in the same giant impact that gave birth to Charon. They also argue that large binary Kuiper Belt objects like Pluto-Charon may also have small moons accompanying them, and that Pluto's small moons may generate debris rings that orbit the planet. The Kuiper Belt is a band of icy, rocky objects and dwarf planets that orbit the Sun in the outer region of our solar system, beyond the orbit of Neptune. It has been known since 1992; Pluto is its most prominent member. Using the Hubble Space Telescope's Advanced Camera for Surveys, the team originally discovered the moons in two sets of Pluto observations in May 2005. Their discovery was confirmed in new Hubble images taken Feb. 15 and released today. We used Hubble's exceptional resolution to peer close to Pluto and pick out two small moons that had eluded detection for more than 75 years, says Weaver, who also serves as project scientist for NASA's New Horizons mission, which is on track to make the first close-up reconnaissance of the Pluto system in 2015. Pluto's previously known moon, Charon, was discovered in 1978, nearly half a century after Pluto's discovery in 1930. With diameters estimated to lie between 35 and 100 miles, the new moons, provisionally designated S/2005 P1 and S/2005 P2, are roughly 10 times smaller than Charon. They're also about 600 times fainter than Charon and 4,000 times fainter than Pluto, and hidden in the glare of nearby Pluto and Charon when viewed by ground-based optical telescopes. The scientists say this is the reason the moons evaded detection before Hubble looked for them. The Weaver team writes in Nature that the satellites were easy to see in the Hubble pictures. That was somewhat surprising because ground-based observers had been trying for more than a decade to find new satellites around Pluto, says Max Mutchler from the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, the first person to spot the moons in the May 2005 images. But I felt almost certain even when I first saw them that they were real objects -- not any sort of artifact -- and that they were exhibiting orbital motion around Pluto. That orbital motion -- inferred from the different locations of the moons in pictures taken May 15 and May 18 -- is what convinced scientists that they were indeed looking at moons and not stray light, cosmic rays or other Kuiper Belt objects that happened to be passing by. If we assumed the orbits were circular and in the same orbit plane as Charon, we could predict the exact positions of the objects on the second day, says Dr. William Merline, a co-author and discovery team member from Southwest Research Institute (SwRI). When the objects on the second day appeared almost exactly where we predicted, we were convinced -- no two artifacts could follow the rules of orbital physics that 'real' objects must obey. The presence of the new moons in orbits with so many similarities to Charon's sheds light on the formation and evolution of the Pluto system, as well as on the process by which satellites are formed in the Kuiper Belt, says SwRI's Stern, who is principal investigator of the New Horizons mission. The new moons will be important targets of New Horizons, which was launched Jan. 19 to provide the first detailed reconnaissance of Pluto and the Kuiper Belt. The New Horizons spacecraft will fly within several thousand miles of Pluto and its moons in July 2015. Weaver says the APL-built Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) telescopic camera on New Horizons should be able to probe the new moons and resolve surface features down to 600 yards wide. These observations build on primary mission science plans to characterize the global geology and geomorphology of Pluto and Charon, map their surface compositions and temperatures, and examine Pluto's atmospheric composition and structure. New Horizons also will map the two smaller satellites in color and black-and white, and map their surface compositions and temperatures. We're getting four fascinating targets for the price of two, says Weaver. The opportunity to
[meteorite-list] Pluto's New Moons Likely Born with Charon; Pluto May Even Have Rings
http://www.swri.org/9what/releases/2006/Pluto.htm Communications Department Southwest Research Institute PO Drawer 28510 San Antonio, Texas For more information contact: Maria Martinez, (210) 522-3305 or Dr. Alan Stern, (303) 324-5269 February 22, 2006 Pluto's New Moons Likely Born with Charon; Pluto May Even Have Rings Boulder, Colorado -- In a paper published today in Nature, a team of U.S. scientists led by Dr. S. Alan Stern of Southwest Research Institute® (SwRI®), concludes that two newly discovered small moons of Pluto were very likely born in the same giant impact that gave birth to Pluto's much larger moon, Charon. The team also argues that other, large binary Kuiper Belt Objects (KBOs) may also frequently harbor small moons, and that the small moons orbiting Pluto may generate debris rings around Pluto. The team making these findings included Drs. Bill Merline, John Spencer, Andrew Steffl, Eliot Young and Leslie Young of SwRI; Dr. Hal Weaver of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory; Max Mutchler of the Space Telescope Science Institute; and Dr. Marc Buie of the Lowell Observatory. This team discovered Pluto's two small moons in 2005 using sensitive images obtained by the Hubble Space Telescope, as reported by Weaver et al. in an accompanying paper in the February 23 issue of Nature. The evidence for the small satellites being born in the Charon-forming collision is strong; it is based around the facts that the small moons are in circular orbits in the same orbital plane as Charon, and that they are also in, or very near, orbital resonance with Charon, says lead author Stern, executive director of the SwRI Space Science and Engineering Division. Tests of this scenario will come from refined orbital data, from measuring the rotational periods of these moons, and from determinations of their densities and surface compositions, says co-author Weaver. Collisions, both large and small, are major processes that shaped many aspects of our solar system. Scientists use computer simulations to study the origin of planetary systems formed by impact events of a scale much larger than could be simulated in a laboratory. Another large collision, like the one thought to have created Charon and Pluto's small moons, is believed responsible for the formation of the Earth-moon pair. The idea that Pluto's small moons and Charon resulted from a giant impact now seems compelling. Future simulations to determine the characteristics of the impact required to produce all three satellites should provide improved constraints on the early dynamical history of the Kuiper Belt, adds Dr. Robin Canup, director of SwRI's Space Studies Department, who in 2005 produced the most comprehensive models to date of the Charon-forming impact. Based on the growing realization that binary ice dwarf pairs like Pluto-Charon are common in the Kuiper Belt, the Pluto satellite discovery team concludes that numerous triple, quadruple and even higher-order systems may be discovered across the Kuiper Belt in years to come. Finding small satellites around KBOs is difficult because their large distance from the Sun makes them appear very faint. As a result, we don't really know how common it is for KBOs to have multiple satellites, adds co-author Steffl. One good way to test this is to search around objects that have been ejected from the Kuiper Belt into orbits that bring them much closer to the Sun. So far, about 160 of these objects, called Centaurs, have been discovered. We hope to use Hubble to search for faint moons around some of them. Co-author Merline adds, If Pluto's small moons generate debris rings from impacts on their surfaces, as we predict, it would open up a whole new class of study because it would constitute the first ring system seen around a solid body rather than a gas giant planet. The Pluto system never fails to reward us when we look at it in new ways, concludes Stern. What a bonanza and an illustration of the richness of nature Pluto has consistently proved to be. Our discovery of its two new moons reinforces that lesson yet again. The paper, A Giant Impact Origin for Pluto's Small Moons and Satellite Multiplicity in the Kuiper Belt, by Stern et al. is available in the February 23 issue of Nature. NASA funded this work. First of all, I think it is very unprofessional spreading rumors around about having planetary pieces. To me, this is no joking matter. My brother and I have spent a fortune putting together a planetary collection consisting of five unpaired Martian and three unpaired Lunar meteorite main masses. This was by no means an easy collection to put together and to have somebody falsely claiming to have two new planetary main masses is irresponsible. I think it is best to wait for lab results and do your bragging later. Second of all, I heard about the two planetary pieces while enjoying myself at the Reed's room. [meteorite-list] [AD] Post-Tucson Sale Goodies
Dear Listees: Greetings all. Well, as has been much discussed on the List, it was a great Tucson show this year, and very long! I acquired some good material, and have added new items to my website, including the best sculptural baby Campos I've seen (Campitos as my South American friends call them); a few hard-to-find super nice Gibeons; and some Sikhotes, Seymchan slices, etc. New irons are here: http://www.aerolite.org/iron-meteorites.htm Don't miss The Campo Twins. I find them very entertaining: http://www.aerolite.org/catalogue/campo-twins.htm I've also put together a new Historic Meteorites catalogue, with some Nininger material, including a fine Henbury end cut with hand painted Nininger number; some vintage Canyon Diablos with numbers from the Eugene Cornelius Collection (H.O. Stockwell's hunting buddy); some American Meteorite Lab pieces with labels, etc.: http://www.aerolite.org/historic-meteorites.htm Main sale page is here: http://www.aerolite.org/meteorites-for-sale.htm Thanks for looking . . . and . . . [meteorite-list] identifying irons
Hello list: I recently received two iron meteorites without documentation. The original owner died leaving disheveled records, with nothing about two whole irons (approximately 3-4 lbs--I don't have a scale handy). One looks a great deal like Canyon Diablo and has a small corner polished off to reveal the iron (on a point). It is roughly 5 inches x 3 inches x 3 inches and has a number written on a white paint background. The number is 34.47 . I'm wondering if this is an American Museum/Nininger number (as several Canyon Diablo samples from there start with 34). I suspect the other is a Toluca. It is about 4 inches x 3.5 inches x 3 inches and has the remnants of a handwritten number on a white paint background. The number is 1-?,P The dash in the previous number represents either one or two missing numbers. The ? represents a partial number with loops. It could be a 3, a 6, or an 8. In addition to this number, there is a typed label glued nearby that says 1982 . If anyone can definitively identify these two meteorites, I would appreciate it if you'd e-mail me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] Thanks. __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Re: [meteorite-list] A reply to all involved ...
Bernd, As you might see, I wrote that Mark innocently reported about Edwin's fake moon rock, Mark was not attacked at all. He was simply the catalyst that started the fire. As I said yesterday, I had let this go all during Tucson, but when Mark continued the lie, it was time to stop it. Do you agree that misinformation should be squashed immediately? It harms everyone involved when people report large moon meteorites that do not exist. Mark had nothing to do with this other than reporting what he saw in Edwin's room, and by the simple fact that he reported this 1.5 kilo moon rock, proves that Edwin was telling everyone that BS story. Edwin then had the nerve to claim I had dealer envy which is pretty pathetic considering the amount of real, confirmed planetary material in my display case. Let's revue, one had 11 Lunar and 10 Martian meteorites, one had a large fake Lunar, who should have the dealer envy? Anyway, this was an unfortunate series of events that led to this, and I stand by all of our attempts to set the meteorite world back on track with the truth of the matter. Re: [meteorite-list] identifying irons
Hi ? As you mentioned Nininger used 34.### for Canyon Diablos. So it is probably a CD. If you could post a picture that would be most helpful. According to the Catalog of MeteoritesASU (1986) for Toluca he used 128 plus a letter or with the usual decimal plus a number. I guess the 128 could match with your 1-8P example. Again a photo would be most helpful. My guess is for the 1982 to be the weight of the specimen in grams. Re: [meteorite-list] a reply to Hupe and Farmer
But: To claim a Lunar or Martian is a better piece than the mysterious world of Vesta, that Diogenites, Eucrites and by extension Howardites are not on par with planetary specimens than those more common ones from the Moon which isn't a planet by definition, that maybe they do not offer equally or more clues to the genesis of the Solar system...Finally, quality examples of those classes are probably more rare on Earth, and further away to get - over 400 kg of moon rocks are available to study. Awww come on Doug. what would you rather crash through the roof of your house right now - a 100 kg nose cone orientated lunar / planetary or an HED? even if you like HEds better that 100 kg of moon rock could buy you a TON of HEDs - literally speaking ofcourse. I like HEDs to, but there is no question that the planetary stuff is better to have! :) __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Indeed, but the story goes deeper, Edwin had been told by myself and others (including scientists) that the 2.5 kilo stone was a Diogenite, I have some of the same stone sitting in my office and have seen many kilos of it in Morocco and some at the show in other dealers rooms. That did not stop Edwin from still saying it was a Martian meteorite. The Lunar piece is not even a meteorite. He had numerous pieces in that case, a lot of NWA 1929. It was Edwin's first or second trip to Morocco, so I understand if he does not know the dynamics there of just how many stones are out there. Again, this started as a joke, and you see Edwin did not deny that, of course I can get Ted Bunch in on it since he helped play the joke on Jim Strope and I. He knew those stones were not planetary, but decided to keep saying it afterwards. That is a huge difference. And that's why I think that Ensisheim and Munich are the more pleasant fairs. There all is concentrated in 1 and 3 halls and the dealers aren't scattered through a whole town, so that such an occurrence never could happen, nor would a dealer have an idea to tell stories to lure some audience to his stall. If there would be a doubtable stone, all would take a look and especially in Ensisheim, where after 7 o'clock only meteorite people are on the streets, they would discuss it in the only 2-3 places, to stay in the evening, at a good beer and some ciche... Huh, can't wait the summer! Got so sentimental today, that I bought an engraving of the Ensisheim town hall on ebay... Zelimir, we still need your confirmation! You guys arent thinking big enough - if we get to choose the kind of meteorite that crashes down on our own house - i'd like my 100 kg orientated martian to have 2 little bumbs sticking out of the (bubbly) crusted back side of the stone. when excavated those bumps will turn out to be the eye stalks of one of those nifty spiney trilobites. in comparison a piece of mercury is just another rock! :) From: David Weir [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] CC: meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com, [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] If I can choose.! I believe Xpo Press plans to continue producing the EZ-Guide in the future. I found it a very useful resource during the show. CHONDRULES! ANY chondrite with LOTS of sharply defined, wide variety of size and colours chondrules over any comparatively plain looking basalt lunar! They capture my imagination, and I look at them through my microscope whenever I have some free time, and cruise the internet looking for pictures. Legend has it that they are almost semi-orgasmic. You can send pictures, texts, add-on to improve the database 5 Advertising system which allows dealer to put on advertising for low prices I need your ideas to improve the system, I would like also the price you are ready to pay for an annual fee... Re: [meteorite-list] Poll : Online Encyclopedia of Meteorites
Bonjour List, Hello Pierre-Marie, This is indeed a very ambitious project... For me the word encyclopedia is now somehow connected to the word Wikipedia... Wouldn't it be a good idea to start there and make the meteoritics entries a little bit less thin? It would be a good idea for the meteorites discoverers/recovers to write there an article about their meteorites... just an idea...
