[meteorite-list] Sikhote-alin question
Greetings Last night I listed a bunch of auctions one of which was a Sikhote-alin with a 2.5x2 cm circular feature in it. It is kind of like what you would expect of a large troilite except the surface (about 1-2mm lower than the surrounding surface) appears to be solid metal like the schrapnel. This morning I had an email from someone who said he had a piece with the same feature and was wondering what it was. Anyone want to take a stab at what it might be. I have no good explanations. Here is a link to the auction. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemcategory=3239item=230002162891 -- Eric Olson http://www.star-bits.com __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

[meteorite-list] Fraudulent Trade
Dear Michael Blood, I couldn't disagree with you more on this issue. When transactions take place between members of the meteorite community there is a high degree of mutual trust involved. I trust the people I'm dealing with because I'm sure that the vast majority of them are intrinsically honest persons. I also trust members of the meteorite community I've NEVER DEALT WITH BEFORE, because the meteorite community is very small and I know that a dishonest person would not last long, because in a small community, bad news travels fast. I think McCartney Taylor did the right thing to bring this to a public forum because: 1) It gives all of us a heads up about a possible rotten apple in our midst. 2) It gives the other party a chance to state his case and correct the facts, or pay up as the case may be. I think this is much better than a bunch of private emails where the accused has no chance to respond, or even know he is being besmirched. My future trust in members of the meteorite community would be considerably reduced if I thought that cooks would not be exposed publicly. Sincerely, Mike Fowler Comment to all: I was very sad to see the original post regarding this private issue. As is almost always the case, it would also appear there is more than one side to the story, as Bob indicates below. This is an example of why private issues should not be brought up on the list and why people should be very hesitant about taking sides when they are. If the accusations have merit, they should have gone directly to the board of the IMCA, and I encourage both parties to pursue that action now. While it appears there may be significant other issues in this case, it is none of my business - nor anyone else's on the list, other than board members of the IMCA, if this issue is presented to them. I have had multiple interactions with both parties involved and found each of them to be, in every instance, honest, open and above board. Whatever there differences are - they are between the two of them and I hope they are able to resolve them. In any event, I hope we are not exposed to the issue further on this list. If it does go before the board of the IMCA, then, perhaps there will be action taken of which we will be made aware. As I said, however, even then, I would hope rather for an amicable resolution being reached leaving all parties satisfied, but in any event, off the list. If it is NOT one of those impact-produced surface craters that McHone and M. Killgore describe in Impact-produced surface craters on Sikhote-Alin irons (cp. MAPS 33-4, Supplement, 1998, p. A101), it might be troilite surrounded by schreibersite + swathing kamacite. Buchwald wrote about Sikhote-Alin: Troilite occurs in minor amounts, mostly associated with the schreibersite skeleton crystals which in many instances may have nucleated upon the troilite. The troilite forms 1-10 mm nodules and lenticular bodies. In most cases it forms the central part of cm-sized, intricate, lace-like textures where schreibersite filaments and hieroglyphs radiate from the troilite in structures that suggest coarse-grained eutectics (+). Similar structures are present in, e.g., Sao Juliao, Sandia Mountains and S a n t a L u z i a*. .., and on p. 1074, Buchwald wrote about Santa Luzia*: BUCHWALD V.F. (1975) Iron Meteorites (Univ. of California, 1975, Vol.3, excerpts from p. 1074): Not only is the troilite elongated parallel to the present exterior surface, but the schreibersite-metal eutectics (+) associated with it also appear to have formed parallel cylinders 10-40 mm in diameter. Later, swathing kamacite has grown around these cylinders in the solid state to form concentric shells, 5-15 mm thick. Troilite forms the central part of the cylinders, but, since it pinches and swells irregularly, it may or may not be present in a given section perpendicular to the cylinders. (+) McSWEEN H.Y. [meteorite-list] NASA's Cassini Spacecraft Marks Mission Halfway Point
MEDIA RELATIONS OFFICE JET PROPULSION LABORATORY CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY NATIONAL AERONAUTICS AND SPACE ADMINISTRATION PASADENA, CALIF. 91109 TELEPHONE (818) 354-5011 http://www.jpl.nasa.gov Carolina Martinez 818-354-9382 Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. News Release: 2006-088 June 27, 2006 NASA's Cassini Spacecraft Marks Mission Halfway Point As the Cassini spacecraft reaches the halfway mark in its four-year tour of the Saturn system, discoveries made during the first half of the mission have scientists revved up to find out what's in store for the second act. Cassini has been orbiting Saturn since June 30, 2004, studying the planet, its rings and moons. The spacecraft has spent a considerable amount of time studying the moon Titan during 15 separate flybys so far. In the second half of its prime mission, ending June 2008, Cassini will swing by Titan 30 more times, said Robert T. Mitchell, Cassini program manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. The past two years have been just like a warm-up. We especially focused on Titan because we thought it could tell us something about the early Earth, said Dr. Toby Owen, Cassini interdisciplinary scientist at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Owen added, Examining this world frozen in time, we find evidence that Earth may have begun with the same methane-ammonia atmosphere that marked the birth of Titan. Because of our world's closeness to the Sun, Earth has oceans of liquid water, which Titan lacks. The resulting chemistry in Earth's warm environment ultimately led to the origin of life, whereas on Titan we find only a frozen echo of early Earth: methane, nitrogen, and a suite of small organic molecules. Our planet's carefully balanced, warm global climate is the underlying reason that we are investigating Titan, instead of Titanians investigating Earth. Cassini's tour of the Saturnian system is about to take on a new pace. This summer we will begin our express-ticket ride. That's 11 months with 17 Titan encounters and 51 spacecraft maneuvers to adjust the flight path, more than one maneuver per week, said Jerry Jones, Cassini chief navigator at JPL. The first of these encounters will be a Titan flyby on July 2, followed by the closest Titan encounter yet on July 22, at 950 kilometers (590 miles) above the surface. Later in July, navigators will begin to flip the spacecraft's orbit orientation with respect to the sun by nearly 180 degrees, resulting in a bird's-eye view of Saturn's glorious rings. This gradual transfer will take about one year. One of the biggest mysteries confronting Cassini is the changes we've seen in Saturn's radio emissions said Dr. Bill Kurth, Cassini scientist at the University of Iowa, Iowa City. We've seen the radio period, the frequency of emissions that tell scientists how fast or slow the planet is rotating, change by as much as one percent (or a few minutes) over just 10 years, and we don't know why. Pinning down how long the day is on Saturn is key to understanding other things, such as wind speed. Cassini has quite a job to do during the second half of the mission to match the potpourri of discoveries in its first half. The wealth of information from the Cassini spacecraft and the European Space Agency's Huygens probe, which descended through Titan's murky atmosphere to its surface, shows that Titan is remarkably Earth-like. There is evidence for methane rain, erosion, drainage channels, dry lake beds, possible volcanoes and vast dune fields that run for miles. In addition to the Titan findings, Cassini also discovered three new moons, and some of the previously-known moons provided surprises. One of the most bizarre discoveries is a giant mountain range that runs the full length around the equator of Saturn's moon Iapetus. The mountains rival Olympus Mons on Mars, which is nearly three times the height of Mt. Everest. Other moons look like rubble piles. Cassini also acquired the highest resolution images ever taken of the planet's rings. Strange structures in the rings became apparent on the first day of the tour. Waves rip through the rings, while knots and banded structures shape them. Clumps of ice several kilometers wide are now appearing. Scientists also witnessed moons influencing the rings. The moon Prometheus was caught stealing particles from the F-ring, while Enceladus seems to be contributing particles to Saturn's expansive E-ring. A whole new class of small moonlets may lie within Saturn's rings. New rings have also appeared, which may indicate the presence of tiny moonlets. The true showstopper was the discovery of giant, icy geysers gushing from the surface of Enceladus. This evidence leads some scientists to believe there may be liquid water close to the surface. With all these discoveries in the first two years, it's little

One of the booths open to the public is sponsored by the Haviland Postal Service for the purpose of providing a cancellation stamp that features the festival event. The stamp contains an elongated outline of the state of Kansas with the phrase Ab Astris - From the Stars and shows the Haviland crater in the south central part of the state. Three stars adorn the upper left hand portion. Beneath are the words The Rock Stops Here! and Brenham Meteorite. Haviland Postmaster Anita Kendall says festival-goers should look for her booth in Hocket on the Barclay campus all day on Saturday. Kendall encourages collectors to bring stamped envelopes or cards with them to be cancelled for mailing to friends or to themselves. She plans to have stamped cards and stamps available for purchase as well. According to Kendall, it is common for communities to have cancellation stamps made for local events. Application must be made to the U.S. Postal Service and the stamp must contain certain information including the town, date, and state to be approved. In this case, Haviland artist, Marlene Lofgren, who designed the stamp, made sure it would pass inspection. __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Hi, Dean, and all, Yes - that video was posted a while ago, but definitely worth another look! One question I have about it, though: when you watch it in the larger video mode, you see the flash, then the fade, and then there is a slight, single pulse of brightening again before it fades out completely. It seems that there is also an increase of light at the tail end of the article's included Impact Light graph. The dynamics of the impact? Or could that little increase simply be attributed to atmospheric influence on the earthbound video surveillance? Since the payload is going into a Molniya-type orbit, the launch direction is to the south-southeast -- perfect for viewing from southern California. The launch may also be visible from Nevada and Arizona. The timing is excellent for backlighting of the exhaust plume since the sun will set (in SoCal) shortly before launch. [meteorite-list] Find spot-Fall spot-Google Earth-Mystery-Questions
Hi all Walter the Newbie here again. The other night, I was looking over the Meteoritical Bulletin Database for meteorites discovered in Colorado (I live in Golden, Co. which is west of Denver right in the foothills of the Rockies). I was looking over the Colorado list that I pulled up from the database and I saw a listing for the APEX find (6.1 grams, Type L6, found 1938). I had never heard of a place named APEX. I clicked on the globe which was part of the legend, and wow, my Google Earth booted up, and a bookmark for APEX Colorado was placed in the Google Earth place list and then Google Earth took me to the location. I didn't know it could do that. My second surprise. The APEX location was about 5 miles from my apartment. It was just up my street, off a dirt road that meandered through the foothills just northwest of my place. A mystery. I Goggled the web to find out something about Apex Colorado. Apex Colorado was a town developed during the Colorado gold boom. It is now one of Colorado's surviving ghost towns. The mystery for me is this. The actual physical location of Apex is about 15 miles directly west of the find spot above my apartment location, into the Rocky Mountains. Why would the find be named after a town 15 miles away when the find is a (excuse the pun), a rocks throw from my town of Golden? And there are many other places nearby that could have been used to name the find. Another mystery. This Apex find behind my location was only one small 6.1 gram stone. Why only one very small stone. Where are the others? Further investigation into this spot near my apartment was interesting. This spot was, at one time, a plains Indian encampment. Archeological studies have been done of this site. The Indians called this spot Magic Mountain (getting creepy now). The locals whites called it APEX GULCH. How come the name of the find is not Apex Gulch or Magic Mountain, instead of just plain Apex? I surmised that the meteorite found here probably came from the medicine bag of one of these Indians who lived at the site. Can a find spot only indicate that a meteorite was found at that spot, even though a fall never happened there? If I'm tramping around the foothills and my meteorite pocket piece falls out of my pocket and 50 years from now someone finds it, would it be possible that that piece could be give a name for the find? This find spot is now all private property, but I wonder. Just one stone, or is there more up there waiting to be found. And one afterthought. If you all go rushing up there, someone stop at my apartment and pick me up, I'd like to get to meet you all. Walter L. Re: [meteorite-list] Fraudulent Trade?
Michael, I don't often comment on this list, but I will this time to disagree. In this dispute the two sides are McCartney's detailed complaint and Bob Evans' email basically telling McCartney to stuff it. That's not what I or most people would consider two sides to a dispute. That's an abuse that people should know about and condemn. And what does the IMCA have to do with this. So far as I can see Bob Evans isn't a member--and perhaps the reason why is evident. Eric Twelker Hi Mike and all, Well, it just goes to demonstrate once more how there are more than one side to every issue and each side can be right in its own way and that doesn't necessarily make the other side wrong. Best wishes, Michael on 6/27/06 12:40 PM, Mike Fowler at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Dear Michael Blood, I couldn't disagree with you more on this issue. I think McCartney Taylor did the right thing to bring this to a public forum because: 1)It gives all of us a heads up about a possible rotten apple in our midst. Excellent Bernd!! That sounds just like what it is. There is no obvious troilite showing so maybe it was part of the half that split off this piece. If it is NOT one of those impact-produced surface craters that McHone and M. Killgore describe in Impact-produced surface craters on Sikhote-Alin irons (cp. MAPS 33-4, Supplement, 1998, p. This is the first launch of a Delta 4 out of California. Skies will of course be darker for those in Arizona and Nevada, so I expect a large number of meteor and/or UFO sightings this evening. --Rob __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
Re: [meteorite-list] Find spot-Fall spot-Google Earth-Mystery-Questions
Hi, Walter, List The Catalog gives the find location as Apex Gulch. It goes on, A single, crusted mass weighing 6.1g was found during the excavation of an ancient Indian camping site in the foothills west of Denver, five miles N of Morrison. This site subsequently became known as the Magic Mountain site. Though found in September of 1938, it was not noticed that it was a meteorite until 1983. Sharp-eyed guys, those anthropolgists... It's in the Denver Museum. There is definitely something spooky about visiting an old one-stone fall site. I live very near (eight miles) from Benld, Illinois, where on the nicely coincident date of Sept. 29, 1938, the 1770.5 grams of the BENLD (H6) meteorite smashed through a garage roof, a car roof, its back seat, floorboards, and ended up, intact, sitting on the cracked concrete floor of the garage. It was the first recorded meteorite to hit a car, even if the rock from the heavens did have to chase it into the garage and nail it there! Good way to break into the Biz, though; it's now a star resident of the Field Museum. I been to the old town newspaper in Benld, read the article on the now yellowed front page of the next morning's newspaper, and tried to find the address of the house where it fell. I was only able to laboriously pin it down to a 2-3 block square, still... I stood there on a hot summer afternoon and looked at all those small neat plots of grass surrounding the little 1920-30's 4- or 5-room bungalow houses. With all the fuss of having your car perforated by a meteorite -- it must have created a furor among the neighbors -- do you suppose anybody thought to look any OTHER stones? I thought about an H6 going fast enough to puncture roofs (garage and car). Why, if it hit grass and dirt, it would be a foot deep or more (depending on how wet or dry the soil). I wondered how much these folks would mind a sort of neighbor (only eight miles away) going over their yards with a metal detector? Hmm... Reality always has its little tricks up its sleeve. When I struck up a conversation with the oldest still cognitive resident I could find, I discovered that the New South Subdivision, as it was called, had been built on a gulch filled with the bulldozed remains of a burned-out and bankrupt IRONWORKS! Why, he said, you can't even put in a garden, your spade hits so much iron and brick and glass! No, this dirt is no good for anything but grass. And it's even hard to get grass to grow... So, if there are kilos more of the famous BENLD, they have chosen a really good hiding spot to rust away in. It's not clear from the Catalog whether the sneaky little APEX was found in a cultural context, or just discovered in the course of the dig. Sterling K. Webb - - Original Message - From: Walter L.
