Re: [meteorite-list] Canyon Diablo Spheroid Size

2006-10-29 Thread MexicoDoug
Hi Steve Dave,

If it is set up as Steve says, i.e. bracketed by removing the biggers first,
24 mesh sieve opening is 0.71mm and the next in the Tyler screen scale,
20 mesh sieve has 0.85mm holes, then:

0.71mmyour sampling0.85mm

This assuming he used all the standard sizes. There are about 12 standard
mesh sizes just between 0.100mm and 1.00mm.

Best wishes, Doug

Dave,

What I remember Nininger telling me was that he used a set of standard
geologic grain sizing screens for shperoid sizing. I have a complete
set of shperoids from him. (There is a name for this set and I can't at
this time remember the specific term) This is a set of screens mounted
in circular rings that fit on on top of each other. Sand is poured in
the top ring and the assembly is shaken. Course grains stay on top and
the fines continue down to the smallest grain size. As I remember,
having used one many years ago, there are seven maybe more screen sizes
and each are given a specific # pertaining to grain size.

[meteorite-list] Canyon Diablo Spheroid Size

Dave Carothers
Sat, 28 Oct 2006 19:03:02 -0700

Good evening list members,

I have specimens of the famous Canyon Diablo spheroids with a copy of the
American Meteorite Laboratory label. I don't have the capability to
measure
the spheroids, but they are of the size that would qualify them as a
Bessey
Speck. The label specifies Size 24.

I know that the spheroids were typically from 0.01mm to 2 mm in size. Does
anyone know the scale Nininger used to produce the Size 24?

Thanks,

Dave

Re: RE: [meteorite-list] One Ad Per Week

2006-10-29 Thread dean bessey
You know the list would be a lot more pleasant if we
had less emails complaining about ads than the ads
themselves.
If you look though the archaives art is on record as
saying that he dont care and the list rules actually
hasnt been updated.
The list rule comment was only put on to satisify 3 or
4 complaining people who made more complaint postings
than the ads themselves who like being in control of
things (And who ironically often has their own version
of the rules and ways to supposedly make multiple sale
postings that dont violat rules such as making the
sales desguised as info postings or something - therby
breaking rules and still staying holier than thau but
staying the high road in complaining about other
people).
Get a life guys. Dont you have better things to do
than complain about than having to delete 3 extra
pieces of spam in the dozens or hundreds that you get
every day. Even the habitual rule breakers clearly
state their postings as ads making it easy to delete
for those not wanting the ads (Unlike some of the ads
announcing the latest greatest meteorite ever until
tomorrows latest greatest meteorite ever ad).
Lets talk about something important - like all of my
new NWAs that I will have in munich. Now thats the
latest greatest meteorite news ever. If you dont like
the ads just delete my munich sales without reading
them.
Go get a life and stop bitching like a bunch of
miserable crousty old ladies talking politics and old
boyfriends at a bookclub meeting and have fun with
meteorites. Thats what this list is for.

[meteorite-list] ARRIVED MUNICH - And Thursday Getogether

2006-10-29 Thread dean bessey
I always look forward to coming to munich. I think if
I could choose anywhere in the world where to live
this would be the place. It is a nice place with
friendly people, great restaurants, (relatively cheap
- as far as europe goes), the worlds best beer and
unusually good looking wemon (Which used to matter
before I got married). I almost feel blessed that I
have a job that lets me take a tax deductable week
long vacation here every year.
Unfortunately I will be busy getting ready for the
show and getting stuff in storage listed for sale on
the internet (Work has a habit of ruining a good
vacation) but if anybody else is around early let me
know if you want to meet up.
In particular several list members have expressed
interest in going out thursday night to hofbraehaus
(Historic Beer hall) so if anybody is in town early
lets plan a night out thursday. There is a really nice
walking tourist area are between the train station and
hofbraehaus and it is maybe a 15 or 20 minute walk
through touristy stores with a couple really nice old
buildings and street venders. It is a nice tourist
walk.
If anybody is interested let me know the time thats
best and we will arrange a getogether. The train
station is easy to get to.
If you are coming to munich I can recomend a hotel
(Around 50 euros with free WiFi).

[meteorite-list] Vietnam tektites and faked locations SOLD ON eBay

Dear List Members,
Buyers beware; MANY of the so-called tektites,
especially the extremely large tektites over 200gr
from Vietnam and being sold on eBay as such, are in
fact coming from south China OR elsewhere. My field
research now verifies this fact; I have made numerous
fieldstudy trips to discover this fact, at great
personal expense and time. I am very disappointed
with human business behavior related to $$$. Anyone
seeking further information, please feel free to ask.

2006-10-29 Thread E.P. Grondine
Steve -

I suppose this is what happens when you let your lust
for meteorites overtake your good sense and engage in
questionable activities - others tend to stay away.

If you look at what has happened, all the goodwill you
deservedly earned in the Brenham recovery has been
done away with in the one transaction over the very
small Canyon Diablo.

Now given that uncontrolled lust, who would want to
accompany you while searching other peoples'
properties?

I believe it is up to you to place Mr. Ruben's
meteorite in his hands, apologize to him, and seek
recompense from the person who traded you for it - he
no longer had ownership to undertake that trade,
whatever representations he made to you.

Hi Bernd and List,
If I may say something here, I could not agree with you more Bernd!
With due respect to all in this List, I am of the opinion that we should all
write down - after our names - our geographical location (Country, State or
City) - after all, in this List, besides Arnolds, there are a few Daves,

I must also point out that some of us have the good habit of mentioning

After all, often it helps to know if the email is from a person from

Dear Jose, Bernd;
Yup, as great and a sincere gentleman the one is, the opposite can be
said of the other namesake.

Dave Freeman of Wyoming USA
PS Once, there were about five Dave's on the list.
But there is only one Bernd!!!1

Jose Campos wrote:

Hi Bernd and List,

With due respect to all in this List, I am of the opinion that we
should all write down - after our names - our geographical location
(Country, State or City) - after all, in this List, besides Arnolds,
there are a few Daves, Petes, etc.
I must also point out that some of us have the good habit of
mentioning where are they writing from.
After all, often it helps to know if the email is from a person from
Germany, Arizona, Chicago, Mexico, N.Z. Tokyo or elsewere!

with all due respect but there are two Steve Arnolds and one
of them surely wouldn't like to be taken for his namesake ;-))

Re: [meteorite-list] pieces forsale...authenticity problem?

2006-10-29 Thread MexicoDoug
Hi Dave, A really nice listmember just pointed out to me that one of the
excellent dealers from the southwest who fell into the Geidam authenticity
trap had pull his material and made good. That leaves just Matteo and
Steve. It looks like an oversight on both of their parts. That's not
acceptable!

Failure to maintain impeccable standards regarding authenticity hurts
everyone. You can't run, you can't hide. Just like AIDS ... just because
someone did something unmentionable with an ape, doesn't mean the dealer
next door can't contract it and unknowingly pass it along to you or me.
IMCA, or no IMCA, that really doesn't solve the problem, Dave, my respects
to the good policies of Association, but in reality there is only one
meteorite supply which we are all swimming in. If one person taints it - we
all suffer. There should be no false sense of security since the meteorite
supply has more holes in it than the US border or a wheel of Swiss Cheese.
And not everyone has a Nininger in their pocket to come to the rescue
clarifying this stuff.

This particular unobtrusive type locality, Geidam, just happens to be
setting right smack at the top of my must-really-have list. I care. I am
speaking out because I want to be sure when I ever get my dream on this OC,
that it is the real McCoy...er make that REAL GEIDAM (and not some cheesey
phoney Gouda or Edam).
Wishing better yet for the Garden of Eden,
Doug

Hello Steve, please, I know you are trying hard and sometimes things are
 getting out of control.

I am sorry to have to post this as I am in favor of a kinder and gentler
list where respect is maintained at all reasonable times, and I just don't
feel like getting involved in commercial arguments where I have no
business
and correspond with more and more list members who all enthused about the
same wonderful field of Space science that I am. But:

I want to alledge that this GEIDAM misrepresentation has been on too long
and no one has any reason to perpetuate it. There are at least three
dealers, not just Steve, currently offering Geidam and I understand they
are
all from the some source via a top notch ace of a dealer in Alaska who was
misrepresented by someone near the locality causing this. Alaska was very
kind to inform that it was a mistake and very honorable and reasonable as
far as I can tell about the whole thing. Perhaps it is another even
better
meteorite locality. But let's keep AUTHENTIC guys. From Italy to New
Mexico it is being offered, Matteo once complained about the same thing.
But Matteo is still selling it!:
 http://www.meteorite-times.com/classifieds/classified.php/listing/379

Guys, Please can we all be friends and treat AUTHENTICITY as a DIVINITY
our
community! I truly hope someone in the know can tell me I am dead wrong
about this locality and at least some of the specimens that have hit the
market in recent months. I am puzzled why the community is not doing a
better job of policing itself and that hurts my confidence in the whole.

 Thanks kindly
 Doug

 I love Minuch
 Cheers

[meteorite-list] Mystery Explosions in Colorado Concern Residents

2006-10-29 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/10185373/detail.html

Mystery Explosions Concern Residents
The Denver Channel
October 29, 2006

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. -- Some Commerce City residents said they
experienced what felt like an earthquake or an explosion over the weekend.

Several neighbors from a Commerce City neighborhood in the 14000 block
of East 101st Avenue near the Reunion subdivision reported feeling the
explosions, while others said they didn't feel anything.

One neighbor said he was awakened by the rumble.

It was a violent rumble that rattled things enough to shake things from
shelves, said Daniel Ruskauff.

The neighborhood is not far from Denver International Airport, but
neighbors said they know all about the flight patterns and this was
different.

It almost felt like an earthquake, like the house was going to come
down, said Ruskauff.

Ruskauff said the vibrations lasted several seconds and he and his wife
immediately began inspecting their home.

My wife thought someone may have rammed their car into our house or
something, said Ruskauff.

They found nothing and then called the Adams County sheriff. However,
the source of the shaking is still a mystery.

I know I'm not crazy because I've talked to neighbors and they heard
and felt the same thing, said Ruskauff.

I just heard a sonic boom, said Lee Compton. I hadn't heard that for
years and years.

Compton said he was also awakened by the rumble while a handful of other
neighbors said they must have slept right through.

We checked with nearby Buckley Air Force Base since aircraft have
broken the sound barrier in the past, said Compton.

A spokesperson said there is no confirmation of that happening.

Their first reaction was to run straight outside, said Ruskauff.

Ruskauff said his dogs were upset. He said his concern has turned into
curiosity.

It was frightening that's for sure, he said.

7NEWS also contacted the National Earthquake Information Center in
Golden, Colo. They said there was a small earthquake recorded in Utah
overnight but not strong enough to be felt in Colorado.

7NEWS confirmed that police did check out the area and found nothing.

[meteorite-list] Meteor Caused Mystery Explosion in England

2006-10-29 Thread Ron Baalke

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/cornwall/6096208.stm

'Meteor' caused mystery explosion
BBC News
October 29, 2006

A chief scientist claims a loud bang on the north Cornwall and Devon
border was caused by a large meteor exploding.

David Carcary from the West Cornwall Astronomical Society said a meteor
had created the sonic boom before burning up after it entered the
atmosphere.

He said the lack of any seismological signals indicates it burned up
before it hit the ground.

Residents in the Bude and Holsworthy areas had reported hearing a loud
bang around midday on Thursday.

One resident in Bude said a crack in her kitchen had widened as a
result, while others reported experiencing their properties shaking.

A BBC Radio Cornwall listener said: The stables physically shook. It
sounded like Concorde used to sound when it broke the sonic barrier. But
much louder. It went 'boom, boom'.

Checks carried out by Western Power and the British Geological Survey in
the area were inconclusive and the Ministry of Defence, the RAF and the
Civil Aviation Authority said there were no records of their aircraft
flying over the area.

Mr Carcary believes a similar explosion which shook the south of New
Zealand in September was caused by a meteor.

As soon as I heard the news of the bang, that was the most obvious
explanation to me.

There wasn't any seismic evidence so it burnt out before it hit the
ground - luckily for the people of Bude - and if it was an aircraft, I
would have expected someone to have seen it.

I'm fairly convinced it was a meteor but the only way to prove it would
be to have an audio recording of the boom.
