[meteorite-list] Steve Arnold (Chicago) what are you doing????????

2006-11-03 Thread Ruben Garcia
Hi all,
I've never joined the Steve is a moron club and
I am not going to start name calling. But the
temptation to do so is great.

Look here, he already has the 260 gram Canyon Diablo
with a hole for sale!! The same one he stole from me
and was lambasted for two weeks ago!
And he'll pay freight.

http://stormbringer60120.tripod.com/id142.html

According to his very own email he gave $ 700 for it ,
$400 cash and $300 worth of meteorites.

He is selling it for $400..

Don't know about the rest of you but I'm a buyer at
$250.00.

Hey Steve,
Do you get free money some how? Do you print it up in
your basement? How do you continually buy high and
sell low? Just wondering.

[meteorite-list] Bernd's Section Pictures

2006-11-03 Thread bernd . pauli
Hi Suzanne + Jim,

Hello List and thin sectionists :-)

I'll send this to the List because I think others had the same problem!

I tried to access your photo pages but did not have any
luck, just was blank. Any idea what might be the problem?

My mistake! Well, I should have told you that you first have to log on to Yahoo
(sign up or sign in), then enter your Yahoo!-ID and your Yahoo password. Then
it should work properly.

Best wishes,

And if you don't see why Jeff's Kapoeta thin section is very *special*, then you

Re: [meteorite-list] Steve Arnold (Chicago) what are you doing????????

2006-11-03 Thread Paul Barford
Ruben Garcia asks:
Steve Arnold (Chicago) what are you doing

The most charitable interpretation would be that he's helping make amends.
Obviously, the guy who sold it to him for $700, despite having already sold
it to you for less can now get it back from him and fulfil his obligations
to you as per the contract you entered through ebay.

Everybody will be happy, Steve that he got rid of some meteorites he was
already bored with, the original vendor that he is seen to be behaving more
honourably than two weeks ago, and you because you finally get what you've
already bought once. That is - assuming that after all this unpleasantness
you actually want this holed fragment in your collection.

Re: [meteorite-list] Steve Arnold (Chicago) what are you doing????????

2006-11-03 Thread LITIG8NSHARK
Good morning Folks,

I'd be interested in knowing whether the hole in the specimen at issue was
the result of the flight of the specimen (ablation) or whether it resulted from
natural weathering, as was suggested as a possible cause for the hole in a
previous thread.

As far as meteorites with holes are concerned, my supposition would be that a
weather-induced specimen would be worth something less, perhaps
significantly less, than a truly ablation-generated specimen of similar mass
and
aesthetically pleasing shape. Perhaps also Mr. Arnold, (Chicago Steve), given
his
significant price reduction for his specimen, is silently screaming to us all,
his personal impression regarding the origin of the hole?

Just a thought.

Best regards to all,

[meteorite-list] Megatherium hit by a meteorite ?

2006-11-03 Thread Pelé Pierre-Marie
Hello again,

I've found the following text on an astronomical
website. Do you know of which meteorite it's about or
where I could get more information ?

One of the incidents listed as uncertain took place
in prehistoric time. Despite its rating, there is
strong evidence to indicate it probably did happen.
This prehistoric entry involved a stony-iron meteorite
and a Megatherium, an extinct giant South American
sloth.

The broken skeleton of this Ice Age giant was found
lying on the meteorite. Although the meteorite could
have fallen ages before, it would have been an amazing
coincidence for the sloth to have toppled over on it
as it died. Moreover, the nature of the skeletal
remains has led many scientists to suspect that the
sloth was struck by the falling meteorite – some
20,000 years ago.

Re: [meteorite-list] Megatherium hit by a meteorite ?

2006-11-03 Thread bernd . pauli
Hello List, salut Confrère Pierre-Marie,

Do you know of which meteorite it's about or where I could get more information?

That's the Lujan meteorite:

1. Catalogue of Meteorites:
A piece of about 50g was found 6 m deep in Quaternary formations below the
remains
of a megatherium, M. Kantor, Rev. Mus. La Plata, 1920, 25, p.117. A thoroughly
oxidised
iron, mainly limonite. Very little preserved. Coordinates given as 34° 33' S.,
059° 08' W, and
date of find as 1892, L.M. Villar, Cienc. Investig., 1968, 24, p.302, but it
must have been
found before that year.

2. Vagn Buchwald:

BUCHWALD, V.F. (1975) Handbook of Iron Meteorites, Volume 2, p.790:

Lujan, Buenos Aires, Argentina

Approximately 34° 40' S, 059° 22' W

A piece of about 50 grams was found six meters deep in Quaternary formations
below remains
of a megatherium* (Kantor 1921; Radice 1959). It has been listed as a
mesosiderite (?) by Hey
(1966), but his classification is doubtful.
The 33 g specimen in the La Plata Museum measures 4.5 x 3 x 2.5 cm and is an
iron thoroughly
oxidized to limonite. The specific gravity is approximately 4.5, and the
specimen is almost nonmagnetic.
In the author's opinion the Lujan material is an entirely corroded octahedrite
rather than a mesosiderite.
A close study of a modern polished section might help to solve the question,
since it might be possible
to identify remnants of any octahedral structure and perhaps even find some
untransformed schreibersite
or troilite.

3. Meteorite Magazine:

GIANFRANCO M. (1999) The fossil meteorite of
Lujan (M! Nov. 1999, Vol. 5, No. 4, pp. 35):

Fe2O3 = 83.16%
FeO = 0.26%
NiO = 3.45%
Al2O3  = 0.80%
CaO= 0.54%
MnO   = 0.21%
SiO2   = 1.72%
H2O   = 10.47%

Cheers, salut,

Bernd

Re: [meteorite-list] Megatherium hit by a meteorite ?

2006-11-03 Thread MexicoDoug
Bonjour Pierre-Marie,

It is always a good idea to provide references when you see such
attention-getting assertations, and wish to share and investigate the truth
behind them. Perhaps you can track down the apparent sole Apollo-age source
of this conjecture, Dr. Philip Seff, alledged to be a professor of Geology
at the University of Redlands in California, but who Google-seems to have
more fame as a UFOlogist as the only investigator of several paranormal
events and the author of other hundreds of other beyond the normal,
interesting Strange Tales, that would provide endless entertainment for
imaginative astrologers with a flare for the paranormal.

You can find the University of Redlands personnel here, though they don't
seem to have a geology department:-), although the google references are not
clear whether Seff worked there or just collaborated, as a starting point to
track him down or find someone in the University inform you if it is bogus:

http://www.redlands.edu/fsearch.xml

The mother site:
http://www.fascinatingearth.com/index.html

E-mail for further information on the copyrighted material reproduced on
your unnamed astronomy site or Seff himself:

Your story, Death from Outer Space (no scientific trail, of course):
http://www.fascinatingearth.com/stories/Death%20from%20Outer%20Space.htm

Taken from Chapter 2, the fifth entry, of Our Fascinating Earth:
http://www.fascinatingearth.com/stories/!INDEX%20-%20Our%20Facinating%20Eart
h.htm

Good luck looking into this - as usual, there is a non-zero possibility that
it is not an invented sensation, not due to any science, but rather due to
lack of information. However the absence of references makes it quite
suspicious IMO, a strategy that pervades in fields where the odd-ball factor
is squeezed for personal gain by people who always have stories that cannot
be proven whether they are made up or true. The meteorite community is one
of the only generally honest places to go - so great to be part of it, eh?

Best wishes, Doug

[meteorite-list] Killer Asteroid Pictures

2006-11-03 Thread Greg Hupe

Dear List Members,

Here are some links to some killer asteroid photos. Well, at least it is
part of an asteroid but at a much smaller version than a larger one floating
in space. It is an unclassified Saharan which weighs 4198 grams and is
nearly complete and very fresh. It has got to be the best example of this
size I have seen with virtually no chips or cracks, other than the
contraction cracks in the crust. It measures 22cm x 10cm x 15cm (~ 8 1/2 x
4 x 3 3/4).

Re: [meteorite-list] MUNICH PHOTOS

2006-11-03 Thread Sterling K. Webb

Hi, Dean,

Bright and early in Munich; almost
everybody on this side of the planet is
likely snoozing by now.

The proportions look about right: beer,
beer, spacerock, beer, beer, spacerock,
beer, beer, spacerock...

It's important to maintain the correct
ratio.

   Thanks for the look.

I have been to busy to get a show report or many
photos but here are few anyway. Good time to be had by
all and lots of meteorites around.
