Yep, I'll do so.
But they are different from the good ol' Bessey specks (and more
affordable). They do have a weight and into that hole in the inlay cards fit
thin slices up to 0.2g.

Of course the MoonMars cases aren't satisfying for you,
but especially for you, we hold in readiness a complete stone of NWA 4483
with some nice melt bulges on the exterior, has 42 grams
and if that one wouldn't be sufficient for the usual weight range of your
collection's specimen, we have one more paired stone, to be classified soon,
of 600g.

If this type of Moon is to common for your requirements, there we could help
you with the main mass of the largest KREEP in private hands

and we are glad to hear your offers and to come to terms with you.

Best!

Yep,

Don't forget to seperate illusions from delusions or is that what was
attempted. I'd like to think that the list has a better heart than was
demonstrated recently.

Sell your plastic Mars cases, hyped up versions of Bessey specks. In the
mean time, please stop and consider the common folk that read here. After
all, these are a good part of the market you are trying to cultivate.

Re: [meteorite-list] Steve's Imilac Trip

Re: [meteorite-list] Steve's Imilac Trip

Pamela Shireman
Sun, 25 Feb 2007 20:25:52 -0800

Steve,

Great story! (I may regret this) but, I have to ask ...

Why were Marvin and Harley delayed?

Pamela Shireman

Well, Pamela,

It became plainly obvious to me why they were delayed-- After I guzzled
down that full bottle of Pisco-Cola mix. (I have yet to figure out
which was more, the Pisco or the Cola)

I surmised this:

1) They bought at couple of Pisco bottles in Antofagasta, along with
Cola which is very popular in South America.

2) Being that you cannot drink and drive at the same time, they most
likely held off till they got back on that long dusty road out of town.

3) They made the mix and began to drink it...

4) Antofagasta is at sea level and Imilac strewnfield is at about
11,000 ft. As they gained in elevation the Pisco began to take effect
much more rapidly then Marvin and Hurley realized. Pilots are warned,
one shot of liquor at sea level equals 2 every 5,000 ft elevation
increase. So they got high very fast.

5) They pulled off road to recover.

6) When they finally came down enough to drive back to camp, I asked
them why they were so delayed, expressing my anxiety that I might have
had to walk out the next day.

7) Marvin handed me a bottle of Cola-Pisco that he and mixed and said
Drink this The answer became very obvious very quickly.

I can say this, Pisco is great at altitude. I did not have a hangover
the next day at all, neither did Marvin or Hurley. I bought two
bottles on the way back and have yet to find it here in the US.

Straight, it has a unique taste. Certainly great for those high
altitude meteorite hunts (just so long as there are no trees, rocks or
gullies in the way)

Humm... May have to take a trip down to Chile's Imilac strewnfield, or
better yet to Peru to hunt at Larry's so called crater just to get
more Pisco.

Steve Schoner
IMCA #4470

P.S. Any liquor importers out there: Re-name Pisco to METEOR with a
nice landscape logo with a meteor streaking downward. I bet it would
then find a market here in the U.S.-- Especially with high altitude
meteorite hunters.

[meteorite-list] Statistician needed.

2007-02-26 Thread mccartney taylor
I've finishing a very interesting study on meteorite recovery which is
heavily statistics oriented. However, I may have flaws in my assumptions
and data sets.

I recall that my college stat professor drilled into us, that when you
have a serious stat problem, go find a real statistician. So hence the
request.

While I could easily tap into my local world-class university math
department, I believe it would be best to tap a statistician who already
understands the nature of meteorites.

Please contact me off list.

Hi Steve and List,

Regarding Peruvian pisco, Steve wrote:

Pisco is actually fairly easy to get in the U.S. I noticed a while back
that one of my favorite local wine shops (Hi Time Wine Cellars in Costa
Mesa, CA) carries about a half-dozen varities of Pisco:

http://www.hitimewine.net/istar.asp?a=3dept=01class=02subclass=03

Perhaps you have a local specialty wine store that offers it. Or you
may even be able to buy it online at the above link. Since Pisco is
made from grapes (obviously highly distilled), it is often categorized
with brandy (though sometimes with tequila). --Rob

much more rapidly then Marvin and Hurley realized. Pilots are warned, one
shot of liquor at sea level equals 2 every 5,000 ft elevation increase.
So they got high very fast.

 5) They pulled off road to recover.

 6) When they finally came down enough to drive back to camp, I asked
them why they were so delayed, expressing my anxiety that I might have had
to walk out the next day.

 7) Marvin handed me a bottle of Cola-Pisco that he and mixed and said
Drink this The answer became very obvious very quickly.

I can say this, Pisco is great at altitude. I did not have a hangover the
next day at all, neither did Marvin or Hurley. I bought two bottles on
the way back and have yet to find it here in the US.

Straight, it has a unique taste. Certainly great for those high
altitude meteorite hunts (just so long as there are no trees, rocks or
 gullies in the way)

Humm... May have to take a trip down to Chile's Imilac strewnfield, or
better yet to Peru to hunt at Larry's so called crater just to get more
 Pisco.

[meteorite-list] AD - PolandMET Large new-stuff update

2007-02-26 Thread PolandMET
Hi List
Tuscon Show was new experience to me. I finally meet many of peoples from
this list, this was most importand part of this trip. But from the other
side Tucson fair is really too long. On the last week I was really bored
looking at this tons of tons of all kind of minerals, fossils and
meteorites. This never happend before :). Fortunatelly we have our fair in
Ensisheim. Short, compact and with the same fun (psss... and cheaper too).

OK lets back to business.

I have prepared some of my new material that I have bring back to Poland
from my overseas trip.

. THUATHE [H4/5]
full slices double polished

. DaG 735 [SHE]
ultra thin slices from Mars

. CANYON DIABLO GRAPHITE NODULES [IAB]
Large full slices with big veins of fresh iron. Just wonderfull. Something
similar I have seen only on Robert Haag catalogs. Tomorrow I will add some
more, larger slices from 1400g specimen. Cutting in progres right now.

. DHOFAR 007 [AEUC]
Finally I have got large specimen and fortunatelly it was very beautifull
inside with all kind of matrix type together with some impact melt and lots
of shock veins.

. MILLBILLILLIE [AEUC]
And finally my little complete specimen died on my saw becouse it not find

[meteorite-list] United Nations Urged to Adopt Asteroid Impact Treaty

2007-02-26 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/02/17/un_asteroid_treaty/

UN urged to adopt asteroid impact treaty
Failing to prepare is preparing to die
By Chris Williams
The Register (United Kingdom)
February 17, 2007

AAAS - Moves are afoot in the astronaut community to hustle the UN into
adopting a treaty which would set a deflection mission in motion if
Earth was threatened by a large asteroid impact.

A series of four meetings organised by the Association of Space
Explorers (ASE) will seek to draw up a protocol which the UN can act
upon when potentially Earthbound large objects are identified. The first
is set for Strasbourg in May, and the invited group of space,
engineering, legal and diplomatic luminaries will deliver its
recommendations to the UN, which is following the discussions.

Its success after that will be a matter for the politicians, said ASE
chairman and Apollo program astronaut Rusty Schweickart at the AAAS
meeting in San Francisco on Friday.

The measures the group will propose will include set responses to the
detection of an object aimed at cutting the time before a decision on
what action to take is made. The ASE has arranged the meetings without
governmental prompting for the good of humanity. Schweickart said: We
all know the difficulty the UN has in making any decision, let alone a
time-critical one.

The number of known near-Earth asteroids which have a chance of hitting
Earth in the next 100 years currently stands at 127, but that figure is
expected to rocket to as high as 10,000 by 2020 , after Congress changes
NASA's mandate to include surveying space for such threats. Schweickart
told reporters the boost in public awareness as more objects are
identified will force politicians to act. He said: This is going to be
an inherently international decision. Whether they like it or not
they're going to have to do deal with it.

The biggest problem for any treaty as Schweickart sees it is the
inherently altruistic nature of anwering the problem - by funding a
global plan nations would have to accept individual sacrifices for the
good of the whole of planet. Familiarity with the toothless Kyoto
Protocol on climate change is instructive on how difficult that can be
to achieve.

He added that there would need to be an understanding from governments
that surveying the sky for threats needs to be thought of separately
from the rest of astronomy: What we're talking about here is not a
science - what we're talking about is public safety.

That view was backed up by NASA Ames asteroid hazard chief David
Morrison, who said: This has gone from being an esoteric statistical
argument to one about real events.

According to NASA shuttle engineer Edward Lu, the current favoured
method for deflecting an asteroid is known as a gravity tractor, which
would involved sending a space craft to hover close to the asteroid
and so gradually draw it off course by gravitational attraction. In the
case of the most recent headline-grabbing menace to humanity, Apophis
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/10/31/nasa_has_a_plan/, it would
take a one tonne craft twelve days to deflect the asteroid one Earth's
radius.

The ASE workshops will aim to deliver a protocol to the UN in Spring
2009. Schweickart said: We can't prevent a hurricane, we can't prevent
a tornado. But we can prevent an asteroid impact, and if we don't we're
not much past the dinosaurs.

Thanks to everyone that made my visits so enjoyable. There was far too
much to see and take in for the few days I could get around and escape
from riding at the ranch in the hills outside Tucson. Geoff and Steves
party was fun...thanks again Geoff. I came back with some special
pieces for my collection including a stunning 904g sikhote Alin
individual to celebrate its anniversary.

Cruising around the desert landscape and up to Kitt Peak in the Mustang
with the top down was great too :-)

Marcin...did you get up to meteor crater and the Grand canyon in the

I thoroughly recommend the Tucson show experience to anyone thinking of
visiting next year...I'm already trying to work out how to get
back...might have to try Ensisheim too which has the advantage of being

Thanks again to all for a great first visit.

[meteorite-list] Graphite Nodule 1429g - surprize

2007-02-26 Thread PolandMET
Hmm.
I have write in my last email that Im in progress of cutting my 1429g
specimen of CD Graphite Nodule.

I start cutting and damn this not work. This piece of graphite with
some veins of iron is hard like. urelite ? All pieces that I have
cut before was very easy to cut, even my 452g specimen that I have cut
yesterday.

To cut slice in this one I need 20+ minutes. The reason of that cound be
that this nodule is full of nano diamonds ? Anyone have any more experince
in this matter ?
Im very curious what this specimen have inside, becouse on slices I not see
anything unusual.

P.S. Any liquor importers out there: Re-name Pisco to METEOR with
a nice landscape logo with a meteor streaking downward. I bet it would
then find a market here in the U.S.-- Especially with high altitude
 meteorite hunters.

Pisco is actually fairly easy to get in the U.S. I noticed a while back
that one of my favorite local wine shops (Hi Time Wine Cellars in Costa
Mesa, CA) carries about a half-dozen varities of Pisco:

Perhaps you have a local specialty wine store that offers it. Or you
may even be able to buy it online at the above link. Since Pisco is
made from grapes (obviously highly distilled), it is often categorized
with brandy (though sometimes with tequila). --Rob

Hi,
I've cut many, many Canyon D's. Most are hard but some
will tear all the teeth off a band saw blade even if
its a diamond blade! I'd assume that you do have a
rare piece with very small (or not so small) diamonds.

However, If it only takes 20 minutes per slice that's
not too bad. The next few slices could get
considerably harder.

 Yep, I'll do so.
But they are different from the good ol' Bessey specks (and more
affordable). They do have a weight and into that hole in the inlay cards
 fit
 thin slices up to 0.2g.

Of course the MoonMars cases aren't satisfying for you,
but especially for you, we hold in readiness a complete stone of NWA 4483
with some nice melt bulges on the exterior, has 42 grams
and if that one wouldn't be sufficient for the usual weight range of your
collection's specimen, we have one more paired stone, to be classified
 soon,
 of 600g.

If this type of Moon is to common for your requirements, there we could
 help
you with the main mass of the largest KREEP in private hands

and we are glad to hear your offers and to come to terms with you.

 Best!

Re: [meteorite-list] Steve's Imilac Trip, slightly off-topic: pisco

2007-02-26 Thread Sterling K. Webb
Hi, All Pisco Fans,

For those who cannot find Pisco at their
corner store, or who never get to travel to the
High Desert but are stuck in the Great Bottoms,
there is the Internet Safari to the PiscoMall:
http://www.piscomall.com/
They sell 50 different kinds of Pisco.

Rob,

I'll check it out. In '96 there was no supplier anywhere that I could
find. I suppose that things have changed since.

But I have never seen it anywhere here in Flagstaff. Guess none have
the taste for it.

Steve.

Hi Steve and List,

Regarding Peruvian pisco, Steve wrote:

I can say this, Pisco is great at altitude. I did not have a hangover

bottles on the way back and have yet to find it here in the US. ...

--Rob

And shipping costs around $30 for delivery taking about a month for a
single bottle. Better to find it here.

Hi David and Kitt,

The first photo is gorgeous! I would not be
apologizing about that one! Very nice work on the
sphere and a really nice etch job.

I sent an endcut out for classification today but thought y'all would like a
 look at the
parent piece. It shows no apparent chondrules and no flecks of Fe-Ni. The
 weathering
veins in the picture are all filled with what I assume is hematite, though it
 is not
apparent in the pic. Click on the page's pic for a closeup.

Re: [meteorite-list] Graphite Nodule 1429g - surprize

2007-02-26 Thread Mr EMan
CD's found on and around the rim of Meteor Crater
were subjected to much greater pressures than the
fragments which fell off the swarm such as those found
in Canyon Diablo. The explanation I was given was
that the pressure was sufficient to convert some of
the graphite into diamonds. These can push the saw out
of the way or wear it out. I've a slice where the tip
pf the diamond is visible under a microscope. While
these aren't nano sized as in urelites they are about
the size of the diamonds used in blades. As far as I
know, the diamonds are only found in rim recoveries.

I start cutting and damn this not work.
This piece of graphite with some veins of iron is hard
like. urelite ?

To cut slice in this one I need 20+ minutes. The
reason of that could be that this nodule is full of
nano diamonds ? Anyone have any more experince in this
matter
