2007-03-10 Thread Jason Utas

Hello Ken, All,
That looks nothing like a fresh iron meteorite. Fusion crust? That looks
more like rust, and nevermind those shallow indentations that are being
called regmaglypts - if you want to see what a fresh iron looks like, take
out a Sikhote or Taza - or draw up some pics of any other falls around in
museums.
The jagged edges as well...come on - you'd only get those with a
multiple-fall, and in order for one of those, you'd need a sizable fireball
to accompany its entry.
This one looks like a rusty piece of crap - much worse than the NJ object,
and that one was complete rubbish to start out with.
Regards,
Jason

Thanks very much for posting the video link. Now we can see
that although my estimate yesterday of the computer table's
depth of two feet was maybe a little high, the hole in the
window is far less than the 5-1/2 feet above the table I
generously allowed. Which means the entry angle must be
considerably less steep than the 70 degrees that has been
claimed. Looks closer to 60 degrees, demonstrating once
again that most people are not very accurate when it comes
to estimating angles.

Note that there was no tree or other structure immediately
outside the bedroom window to redirect the metal through
the window. No matter how generous you want to get with
prevailing winds or aerodynamic lift, I don't think you
can get the ballistics to work for a chunk of exoatmospheric
metal.

Re: [meteorite-list] Suspected Meteorite Hits Illinois Home

2007-03-10 Thread Jason Utas

Hello Gary, All,
Fallen meteorites do not have 'craters' on them.
Their flight through earth's atmosphere removes all traces of original
exterior surfaces that existed when the body was still in space (or, if the
body is large enough to retain some of these features on its rear side, it
simply vapourizes on impact).
The only instances we see of 'craters' on meteorites have occurred in large
iron falls in which fragments supposedly collide with each other while
falling (I personally believe that the 'impact features' seen on 'Franconia
irons' are due to siliceous material boiling out of the iron explosively).
That being said, the existence of 'craters' - or, as I see, simply
jagged/dented edges, would point towards it being a piece of space junk or
just a piece of airborne metal, though how it came to fly through a window,
desk, etc, is beyond me.
Regards,
Jason

Well it looks like it was not a rock but, ( no pun ) might of been a

LOS ANGELES — An Iraqi immigrant with a suspicious device lodged in a body
cavity was detained Tuesday at Los Angeles International Airport, authorities
said.
A jetliner bound for Philadelphia, meanwhile, was diverted to Las Vegas
because the man's luggage was aboard.
Officials said the device and the luggage were cleared by bomb squads in Los
Angeles and Las Vegas.
There never was a threat, said Larry Fetters, a security director for the
federal Transportation Security Administration.
Fadhel Al-Maliki, 35, was held for a mental evaluation and for a possible
immigration violation, federal officials said.
Al-Maliki, of Atlantic City, N.J., is a permanent legal resident who came to
the U.S. in 1994.
He had flown to Los Angeles from Philadelphia on Monday and was booked for a
return flight early Tuesday. He triggered an alert during a security screening,
FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller said.
He initially said (the device) was therapeutic, she said.
The device had a wire and what may have been a magnet concealed in his
rectum, federal officials said. It did not contain any explosives.
/**/
Al-Maliki said he had flown to Los Angeles for a visit, Eimiller said.
No takeoffs or landings were affected at the LA airport. But a US Airways jet
en route to Philadelphia was diverted because Al-Maliki's checked luggage
already had been screened and put aboard.
Flight 1422, carrying 143 passengers and six crew, landed at McCarran
International Airport in Las Vegas about 8:30 a.m. The plane was searched and
later cleared to continue on to Philadelphia, an airport spokesman said.

Check the railroad track on the map. Picture a freight train zooming along
and suddenly one of the Peck and Hale container hold-downs fails and the
broken pieces are hit with a couple hundred tons of force. It's not hard to
see a
chunk arcing a few hundred meters and crashing through the guy's window. It
would be rusty. It would have lots of sharp and straight edges.

  Farmer,

Out of curiousity I did a little checking.
 Dropped
out of college to pursue meteorite hunting? Greed
won out over education. How pathetic. I see you
found your little niche, being the first one to
pounce on a new find. Your greed just pours out of
these articles. How much of the park forest did
 you
keep for yourself after telling the police you
needed to cut it. Well... Fatboy, I guess my post
was directed straight to you. My little net caught
 a
big fat fish. I'm making copies of your little
pig-face picture and will send them to my friends
 in
Aplao along with a increase in reward. And in the
future, you just might find me one step ahead at
 new
  falls, especially in South America.

Randall

It's a cutthroat business, Farmer says, where
there is a huge demand for a very small amount of
  material

Breaking into the business was difficult, Farmer
recalls, but he earned the respect of established
dealers by being first on the scene of three
  high-profile meteorite falls

The first two trips didn't pay off immediately,
but they earned him the reputation of being a
  go-getter. A football-size meteorite fell on
Monahans, Texas in March 1998. Within 30 hours,
Farmer was on the scene, but it was already too
late. There was already a fight between the
 finders
and the city over who rightfully owned the rock, a
meteorite broker was already involved and NASA was
trying to get the rock. Shortly after Farmer got
 to
Monahans, a NASA researcher arrived to bargain
 with
the town to take the rock for study at the Johnson
Space Center in Houston. Farmer left with nothing.

Three months later a mess of meteorites from a
rock that exploded in the air fell near Portales
Valley, New Mexico, not far from the Texas
panhandle. Farmer again went straight to the
 desert
region where people had seen the fall, and he was
just in time to see an amateur collector find an
11-pound (5-kilogram) chunk of the rock. Farmer
tried to buy it, but the finder wouldn't sell.
Farmer found a few small pieces, but nothing
 major.
In April 1999, Farmer heard about a new fall in
Ourique, Portugal. Without a second thought, he
bought a ticket to Lisbon and jumped on a plane
 with
  $10,000 cash.
I heard about it in a little note on the
Internet. And I took the risk and just flew over
there, Farmer explained. He rented a car and
 drove
to the small village in southwest Portugal, and
within hours he had cornered the world market on
 the
  prized new meteorite
It had just never made the news, Farmer said,
until this little thing came on the Internet
 about
it being classified. Scientists at the university
had classified the meteorite -- determined its
composition, its type and given it a name. They
posted and announcement on the Internet, where
Farmer saw it. He was in Portugal the day after
reading the very first public mention of the
  meteorite.

Farmer went into the town tavern, set up his
scales on the bar, and spread the word that he
 would
  pay for pieces of meteorite
The investment paid off, though. Having the
 entire
world market of a brand new fall, Farmer had no
trouble unloading the material. It became a rock
that everybody had to have. From museums to
 private
  collectors, everyone wanted a piece.
He traded some pieces with museums for other
 rare
meteorite types, and sold the rest through his
  website at $10 a gram.

He called me up a couple days before Christmas
 and
needed money, Farmer said, I told him I'd be
 there
the next day with cash. I got it -- for a much
 lower
  price than I offered originally.

He was in Uruguay in January arranging a big
purchase. He sped to Canada in March when he heard
that pieces of a meteorite that exploded in the
 sky
above the Yukon Territory had been found on the
ground. He had no luck because the finder was
determined to keep the location a secret, but
 others
in the meteorite community applaud his efforts.
) I hunt for meteorites all over the world. My
meteorite hunting trips include Australia, Chile,
Bolivia, Canada, all over the USA, Oman, Burkina
Faso, Lesotho, Portugal, Spain, Morocco, Western

[meteorite-list] Question from a novice.

   Hello all,

I'm new to collecting meteorites (only 11 so far). I live in Arizona and I
thought I'd try to find some of my own out in the field. I was wondering what
type of metal detectors are best suited for locating meteorites. It would also
be nice if the detector could serve more than one function. For instance, I'd
like to be able to locate gold nuggets also. So, what would you suggest?
Thanks in advance for your help.

[meteorite-list] Threats from Mr Gregory, this guy is a piece of work.

2007-03-10 Thread Michael Farmer
List members, this man is now making threats to my
home and family. Read this and tell me that this man
is a nice, well-mannered gentleman! We are not dealing
with a stable man.
Mr Gregory, a few more threats like this and I will
have to go to the police. Since you threatened to have
anyone going to your crater inprisoned, and tortured,
and denied help from their respective embassy, you
sir, deserved anything and everything said about you.
For your information, I am using an Arabic keyboard,
so typing is not so easy, spelling errors are a tad
common I am afraid. I am also amused that a man with
your supposed skills, degrees, and certifications,
must stoop to commenting one someones weight to put
them down. It shows the desperation in your position,
that you now have put time and money into a
boondoggle, a fake crater with not one cent in
meteorites to be found. As the realization that you
have a worthless piece of dirt to play in, you lash
out at the messengers who have called you on your
announcement.
Myself, I have done quite well in the last weeks:)
More to come on my spectacular finds in the near
future.
By the way, my parter is a gun dealer, so any attempts
at my home and collection will be met with an
unpleasant surprise for the attemptee. Arizona
provides very clear laws providing me with the use of
deadly force for protection of ones life and property.
I am sure you know all about that.

 Mike,

You just keep digging yourself deeper and deeper.
Your post was not intended to be sarcastic. An idiot
could see the underlying tone to your post. Time for
pretending left with the 6th grade, Mike. Now you're
calling people STUPID. And apparently, you still
can't spell. It's thrown not trown. And here's
another lesson for you.stupid people are people
that call people stupid. Take your time Mike, it
will be a long time before you figure that one out.

And I'll give you a word of advice. Keep screwing
with me, and I''ll send a few e-mails to a couple of
Arizona prisons letting them know you have a $1
million dollar unsecured collection in a safe at
your house, I'll even send them your address. Let's
test you level of paranoia? Shall we...

   Torture ? Get real.

[meteorite-list] Sorry, delete my delayed email fix email

2007-03-10 Thread Michael Murray
Well my idea wasn't very bang on. Looks like the computer changed
the meteorite central link to a hyperlink and so my email didn't go
thru. Must be the special text that slows 'em up somewhere in the
email system (and none of the problem has anything to do with my dumb
idea). Sorry, if this email gets to you before the other one I sent

[meteorite-list] Impact Origin of Carolina Bays Argued For at 2007 AGU Meeting

2007-03-10 Thread Paul
Dear Friends,

Apparently, there is going to be some interesting papers
at the 2007 Joint Assembly of the American Geophysical
Union as there will be a session presenting evidence for
an impact having occurred during Younger-Dyras times
at the end of the last Ice Age. Below are links to
representative abstracts:

1. Evidence for an Extraterrestrial Impact Event 12,900 years
ago that Contributed to Megafaunal Extinctions and the Younger
Dryas Cooling

http://submissions5.agu.org/aguconvener/ConvenerView.asp?ref=1388

2. Formation of the Carolina Bays: ET Impact vs. Wind-and-Water
http://submissions5.agu.org/aguconvener/ConvenerView.asp?ref=1334

3. Extraterrestrial Markers Found at Clovis Sites Across North
America

http://submissions5.agu.org/aguconvener/ConvenerView.asp?ref=1393

4. Is There Evidence for Impact-Triggered Fires at the End
Pleistocene?

http://submissions5.agu.org/aguconvener/ConvenerView.asp?ref=513

The session itself is PP05: New Insights into Younger Dryas
Climatic Instability, Mass Extinction, the Clovis People, and
Extraterrestrial Impacts

http://www.agu.org/meetings/ja07/?content=searchshow=detailsessid=159

It looks like Firestone and his supporters are refining their
arguments and dropping the implausible ones, i.e. the so-called
meteor crater in Lake Michigan, and concentrating on what they
regard the basic evidence for their ideas.

Best Regards,

Paul H.

Re: [meteorite-list] all List members Mike re Threats from Mr Gregory

2007-03-10 Thread JKGwilliam
Michael Blood and List,
Like you, I find it annoying that a few ( one in this case) list
members can't follow basic Met.List rules, one of which is to refrain
from posting private e-mails. I do agree that it's true that Mr.
Gregory is way out of line making the threats that he has recently.
However, we all saw a pretty good example of his demeanor and
threatening language recently so we probably don't need more
confirmation from Farmer. You would think that after nearly a decade
of being smack in the middle of nearly every ego war and mud slinging
event that has been on the Meteorite List that Mike would have
developed the hide of a rhino and be able to dismiss threats without
a second thought.

Don't want to hear,

John

[meteorite-list] Meteorite Article From Gem and Mineral Society Newsletter

2007-03-10 Thread Paul
An example of what is being written about meteorites
in the newsletters of gem and mineral societies can
be found online. It is:

Rike III, Z. W., 2006, Meteoroids, Meteors and
Meteorites - Part 1. Pineywoods Rooter, Novmeber 2006,
Pine Country Gem Mineral Society.

This article is repinted on pages 27 – 31 of vol. 38,
no.2 (February 2007) of the Backbend's Gazette, which
published by the Houston Gem and Mineral Society
( http://www.hgms.org/ ). The article and issue
can downloaded from the February 2007 link on the back
issue web page at:

http://www.hgms.org/Backbender'sGazetteIssues.html

and directly from:

http://www.hgms.org/BBG/Feb07.pdf

One way of reaching new people, would be to write popular
articles for your local Gem and Mineral Society about
various topics related to meteorites, impactites, tektites,
and so forth. These newsletters would be a good places
to educate the public about meteorites and meteorwrongs.

Best Regards,

Paul H.

Well, Matt, I understand that there have been SOME larger pieces, that's why
I chose the word virually when referring to the crumb-sized pieces. I'm
not particularly looking for a larger piece of New Orleans, I was just
expressing curiosity at its evolution, from fall to collector market.

Let me try it again. How about this: Compared to other recent,
similar-TKW falls, it seems like a much higher percentage of the material
available to collectors is crumb-sized. OK?

[meteorite-list] A new way to Display My Collection

2007-03-10 Thread David Kitt Deyarmin
My collection of meteorite spheres is growing and the way I displayed them,
mounted in calipers, was getting a bit too busy.

So I decided to make a simple pedestal system and this is what I can up
with:

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p298/BobaDebt/Meteorites/Collection.jpg

Basically I covered 7/8 tubing in felt, drill a series of holes in the main
display platform and then pressed the tubes into the holes.

I have room to display a total of 11 spheres and once all the holes are
filled up I can always drill more in between the current holes and use
shorter pedestals.

Here is the way it used to look.

http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p298/BobaDebt/Meteorites/Collection1.jpg

I think it's a vast improvement

But now I have 11 calipers available for sale, so if you're looking for one
or a couple send an email to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks

2007-03-10 Thread Edwin Thompson

The owner of the main mass of News Orleans is a long time collector and dealer of meteorites and fossils from a small town in the suburbs of New Orleans. He and his wife have a shop and a museum and they intend to keep the main mass of the New Orleans intact for their museum collection. They have been selling the fragments that were broken from the main piece on impact in a consignment arrangement with Blaine Reed. There has been a lot of material sold from that event. Blaine had a number of fragments for sale in his room in Tucson this year, some small and some large. The owners and theirchildrenare just fine as is the main mass. They attend the Tucson show each year and were there this year with their two sons.

Could Venus watch for Earth-bound asteroids?
David L Chandler
New Scientist
09 March 2007

A dedicated space-based telescope is needed to achieve a congressionally
mandated goal of discovering 90% of all near-Earth asteroids down to a
size of 140 metres by the year 2020, says a report NASA sent to the US
Congress on Thursday. Asteroids of that size are large enough to destroy
a major city or region if they strike the planet - but NASA says it does
not have the money to pay for the project.

The study says Venus is the best place for the telescope. That is
because space rocks within Earth's orbit - where Venus lies - are most
likely to be lost in the Sun's glare, potentially catching astronomers
off guard. The telescope could be placed either behind or ahead of Venus
in its orbit by about 60° - the stable Lagrange points, known as L4 or
L5, where the gravity of the Sun and Venus are in balance.

There are quite a few [objects] that are interior to Earth's orbit,
NASA's Lindley Johnson told New Scientist. Those are really hard to
detect [from Earth]; the opportunities to see them are very limited.

From the orbit of Venus, however, you're always looking away from the
Sun, always looking out, he says. And, of course, you can observe 24
hours a day - you don't have to worry about night and day. Even from
Earth orbit, a telescope's view of any given part of the sky is blocked
about half the time by the Earth itself.

In addition, because Venus orbits the Sun in about two-thirds the time
the Earth does, a telescope in that orbit would catch up with any
near-Earth asteroids in their orbits more frequently than Earth does,
offering more opportunities for discovery. You're able to sample that
population more rapidly in the same amount of time, Johnson says.

Missed deadline

An infrared telescope would be more effective than one that studies
visible light, because asteroids reflect sunlight more strongly at
infrared wavelengths. The background sky is also much less bright in the
infrared, providing better contrast for discovering even small, faint
asteroids.

With the Venus-orbit IR telescope, NASA could exceed its goal by three
years, finding 90% of the most dangerous space rocks by 2017. But the
space telescope is estimated to cost $1.1 billion for 15 years of
operation, and NASA says there is currently no money in its budget to
pursue any of the search proposals it studied.

That means it would take until at least 2026 to achieve its goal - and
that is assuming a large telescope in Chile called the LSST (Large
Synoptic Survey Telescope) is completed. But the LSST, which would be
funded through the National Science Foundation, itself has not had final
approval (see Unique wide-field telescope will make 'sky movies'
http://space.newscientist.com/article/dn9200-unique-widefield-telescope-wil
l-make-sky-movies.html).
Without the LSST, as well, the goal would slip beyond 2030.

Former Apollo astronaut Rusty Schweickart says NASA's analysis was a
good examination of the options, and showed that the space option ...
is most effective in dealing with the danger of an unexpected impact.

But Schweickart says NASA failed to deliver on an additional analysis
that Congress had asked for, which included an examination of the
relative merits of different proposals for deflecting an asteroid found
to be on a collision course with Earth. [NASA] did nothing, they
declined to respond. That's pretty disappointing, Schweickart told New
Scientist.

Re: [meteorite-list] Could Venus Watch For Earth-Bound Asteroids?

2007-03-10 Thread Sterling K. Webb
Hi, Martin!

The cost of a series production item includes
on the cost of development and depends on how
many copies you have made. Based on the current
planned production of F-22 Raptors, the cost is
$380 to $390 million apiece. Had the originally
planned number of planes been built the cost would
have been about $130 million each.

However, it's never that simple. The follow-on
F-35 Lightning II will use much of the technology
developed for the F-22, but the F-35 will have a
much lower cost per plane than the F-22 could ever
have. Without that technological development, the
cost of the F-35 would be much greater.

The B-2 Spirit, built in the numbers presently
contemplated, will cost $2,200 million per copy!
Again, and to an even greater degree, the cost of
developing the technology in the first is staggering.

The actual material and man-hour manufacturing
cost of building one B-2 bomber is about $120 million,
one heck of a bargain. Conceived of in the 1970's,
developed in the 1980's, then completely re-designed
to change it from a high altitude penetrating bomber to
a low altitude penetrating bomber (will you make up
your mind?), it was first displayed about the instant
the Cold War sublimated

Instead of the 136 that were planned, even without
a Cold War, we decided to settle for 75 and more
recently our Defender and Decider, Mr. Bush, decided
that twenty were plenty, which raises the cost/plane to
about $2.2 billion a bump. It is now said to be fully
operational, but I cannot find out exactly how many
planes have been built. (Why are you following me
and where is your warrant?)

However, you may live to see more B-2's or at least
B-2-lookalikes, as the design engineer in charge of the
propulsion system was arrested on October 2005 for
selling classified information to China and possibly
other countries as well. Those B-2 copies would cost
considerably less, I imagine, and have a different in-flight
menu.

So, one B-2 equals TWO space telescopes, but
it takes about three F-22's to pay for one space telescope.
Of course, IF the B-2 could fly to and destroy an incoming
asteroid, it would be worth $22 billion, or $22 trillion ---
name your price.

Re: [meteorite-list] Impact Origin of Carolina Bays Argued For at 2007AGU Meeting

2007-03-10 Thread Sterling K. Webb
Hi, List,

Thanks, Paul, for those links.

If you're not familiar with the Carolina Bays,
Listees, here's a page with links to every theory
about them:
http://abob.libs.uga.edu/bobk/cbaymenu.html

Some fascinating and non-fascinating things
here. The list of logical connections that may mean
nothing at all is very long.

Was there a mammoth extinction event? Most
diggers, bonemen, and that crowd say no, but on the
other hand when's the last time you saw a mammoth?

Why would a mild cooling spell extinct a cold-adapted
mammal like the mammoth? Did the mammoths die
out at once or over 1000 years? 2000 years? 4000
years?

How fast is an event? How slow? With an ice age
ending, how badly do you need an impact to explain
extinctions? As far as that goes, how big an impact
event do you need to explain an excess of frog ponds
in the Carolinas?

One of the presenters has advocated that the Bays
formed by steam explosions from a thermal airburst
event, formed out of beaver ponds, a particularly choice
notion in view of the fact that one of the fauna extincted
was the Giant Beaver!

North America lost 5 species of American Horses, a
few species of Western Camels, the North American llamas,
two genera of Deer, two genera of Pronghorns, the Stag-Moose,
Shrub-Oxen, Woodland Muskoxen, the Giant Beaver, the
Shasta Ground Sloth and other Ground Sloths, Short-Faced
Bears like the Cave Bear (big), Saber-toothed cats, the American
Lion (bigger than the African Lion), the American Cheetah,
the Dire Wolf, several species of Mammoth, the American
Mastodont (Mammut americanum), the Giant Bison, and the
Giant Peccary (the super Pig)!

Altogether, in 50,000 years North America lost 33 genera
of large mammals, and 15 genera in the period from 11,500
to 10,000 years ago. At least, we don't have to worry about
the Bunyip (a Giant Killer Bunny Wabbit The Size of A Truck).
The Diprotodon is Australia's problem...

Worthy of note: the inclusion of Luann Becker, who I
suspect has something to do with the newly uncovered
evidence for ET impact at 12.9 ka including end-Clovis age
sediments throughout North America with high levels of
Iridium, magnetic [sic., probably magnetite] and carbon,
spherules, glass-like carbon, fullerenes, and ET noble gas
ratios often in association with carbonaceous black layers
and succeeded by black mats with unusual biota.
Particularly with those fullerenes!

Firestone, who is an expert on isotopes (he wrote
the book on them, literally; he is the Chief Editor of the
Table of Isotopes, 8th Edition). I would not doubt
anything he says... about isotopes. But he has advanced
some utterly ridiculous explanations of his findings, such
as interstellar comets formed in a supernova impacting
at -- what was it? -- 10,000 miles per second? This
naturally tends to make people dismiss the while thing.

However, there is no reason why, as the world expert
on isotopes, he would be any better at explaining how
they got there than say, a Ph.D. in French Literature
would be... or an Economist.

Something happened. No one really knows what.
It left traces. No one really knows whether they imply
any other events or not. Whole genera of animals became
extinct. No one knows if there's any connection. The
list of what we don't know is much longer than the
list of what we do.

And if you're wondering what the Younger Dryas
is... After the ice age started to end and the ice caps
started to melt rapidly, they suddenly slowed down
and almost stopped melting, then they began to rapidly
melt again after the Younger Dryas. Obviously, a
cooling episode... well, maybe.

It can be explained by the fact that what was melting
the ice caps was a rapid warming of the glacial climate
by mid-level warm oceanic water flows to the poles. When
the polar began to melt in earnest, the runoff of cold fresh
water into polar seas slowed and almost stopped those
warm flows. After that initial runoff, the warm currents
resumed and the ice caps were doomed.

No comets, impacts, nor any other exotic event is
required by way of explanation. No cooling is needed,
just a weakening of an ocean current, an oscillation in
the warming process caused by the warming itself.

Global warming -- ya gotta love it.
