Hi, all, Maybe I misunderstood the latest news releases regarding the illnesses in the Carancas crater event - haven't the ailments finally been attributed to Mass Hysteria? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_hysteria Cheers, Pete Date: Sun, 30 Sep 2007 19:33:48 -0700 From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] Posting for Randall Gregory This morning we were sorting through the stones I collected from the Carancas crater and I had a small 1/2 kilogram bottle of very fine grained meteorites that bought from an old woman who patiently collected these grains for 3 days using a car speaker. She used the magnet on the speaker cone sifting through the dirt surrounding the crater. As my wife started to pour the grains onto a paper towel, she immediately said that here noise started to burn. She described it like a thousands little bees stinging the inside of her nose. I put my nose to the bottle and sniffed a little bit and felt the same sensation but more in my eyes and to a lesser degree. Later that day, a friend of ours who was visiting, and after showing here the meteorites, she said I'm getting a headache. and we never told her about the irritation. There is a very good possibility that the vaporization or release of microscopic dust grains into the air was the cause of the complaints. It appears the effects have a lasting effect since my wife is still complaining of irritation. Her exact words are 'this dust has something and I think we need to store these outside'. My wife's occupation is a research biologist and said that she felt the same thing when opening bottles of sulfuric acid. My wife is very sensitive to chemicals, smoke and fumes. I can't smoke around her because it makes her ill and there is no way I can hide my habit from her. I had less of a reaction because I am a smoker and I'm more tolerant of smoke irritation. She's a human smoke detector par excellence. Tonight, she is complaining of nose, eye, and throat irritation. Anyway, it appears there is something in the meteorite that is acidic and irritating to mucus membranes. Tomorrow, I want to buy a PH tester and see what the results are. I'll try to get the results of the testing that the health officials performed on the people living close to the crater. I'll post the results of my research and testing. Dear List Members, I would like to take this opportunity to announce a new CK4 that I obtained over two years ago but am just now getting a chance to offer it to collectors. I will be going by the time your email is received and will notify winners as quick as I can so you will know what choice you won. Re: [meteorite-list] From Randall
Mike, could you please post this one also. Mike Farmer suggested that any remaining fragments under water in the crater would Rot. Does anyone know exactly what would happen to this type of meteorite left underwater? And what effect would the water temperature and relative PH have on this meteorite? If I would have known this when I was at the Carancas crater, I would have taken the water temperature at bottom depth at various times. At this time of the year, the water temperature varies between 40° - 45°. The water in the crater varies in depth, but I expect the bottom to remain consistent with the water table temps. If you've read my previous post. You know that the meteorite material appears to have a irritating effect on mucus membranes and I expect the material is acidic. I'm going to sacrifice a small stone by grinding it and then putting it in a clean plastic film can filled with bottled water. It would be interesting to find out what the PH value is inside the crater vs. the water table. When I return to Carancas, I'll try to make that test. If anyone is knows the effects of water on stoney meteorites, I would appreciate feedback. Gentlemen, (Please post to the list for me) I have in total 4,740 gms. of the Carancas meteorite with an option for another 500 gm. of material. Of this, a total of 259.6 gms. will be sold. Fusion crusted material comprise a total of 128.8 gm. I consider this to be legally mine, since I bought it from the land-owner and his family. The stones purchased from the family were also blessed by a Catholic priest in the town of Desagaudero. The rest I bought from thieves. Theft is wrong in the eyes of the government and God. The bulk of what I have, I consider it to be stolen and I will not sell any until I talk to the land owner and work out an agreement. Just before I left Desaguadero, I paid $2,000 for the 4 kilo piece from local authorities that was collected (stolen) shortly after the meteorite fell. Any Carancas meteorite over 50gms. that hits the market was obtained illegally. I want to petition the court in Desaguadero to declare anything outside of what was purchased directly from the family to be illegal. Australia and Brazil have National Treasure laws, Peru has laws regarding archeological artifacts, and the United States has private property laws. I will ask that the material currently in scientific institutions be exempted and will ask the land owner and the church in Desaguadero to allow them to keep what they have in the interest of science. Imagine that a meteorite fell onto your property and your local police, newspaper reporters and neighbors came in an took pieces of this meteorite until there was nothing left for you. What would your reaction be? What is Ebay's policy regarding the sales of stolen material? Some people will try to sell this stolen material on Ebay. Re: [meteorite-list] another Randall post
Dear Randall, meteorites in general are so exorbitantly rare - we're speaking about 600 tons in total, whereof 90% are covered by the 20 largest iron meteorites, but on the other hand so cheap - that from an economical point of view, they are so insignificant, that very most nations never though about creating an own legislation for meteorites. For evident reasons other existing laws, like for resources, treasure finds, artefacts, natural monuments ect. can't be applied on meteorites. E.g in Germany and Austria we had this year a court decision, which awarded the third stone of the famous Neuschwanstein solely to the finder, because no single one of the existing laws fitted, nor demonstrated the land owner the will to accroach the stone, as they weren't searching for it at all. Therefore most of us would ask you kindly to be more careful with your word choice. If you want to bring forward moral arguments, keep in mind, that the largest US-American and European institutional collections would have then to be dissolved, as they were built up with bought pieces. The legal status of the Antarctic meteorites isn't clarified neither. More credibility would have your moral concerns at least to me, if you would hand some additional money in to the land owners later, as the material has to be evaluated somewhat higher than 0.5$/g. (I personally woud guess, that - if not a considerably larger amount will be found - collectors would pay 30-50$ per gram for usually dimensioned slices). Greetings all, Several issues have come up for me regarding the Forwarding of Randall's posts to the list: I have contacted Art to check out if I were posting for Someone banned or suspended from the list. Uncharacteristically, I was actually able to get ahold of Art on my first shot (It usually Takes an average of a month to get ahold of Art). Here is the status of the situation: 1) Randall was never banned or suspended. The threats against another List member were in a private post cited by that list member to The list and, therefore, in Art's opinion, not the list's business. 2) Randall had been having problems posting to the list for the Following reasons, of which he has been informed, but which Should be of value for all of us to review so we do not make the Same errors: a) Using multiple addresses and not just the list address (the software reads this as spam). b) Using HTML format - the list accepts Text Only format Exclusively. I apologize to the list for not checking to be sure ahead Of time that I was not forwarding post for someone suspended Or banned. Though that turned out to be the case, I should have Checked first - and in the future, I shall. Like Art, I do not consider posts to the list my business to Censor or judge. However, if I am asked to forward said posts In the future I will read them thoroughly decline if I do not Personally agree with what is being said. While I am not a censor, if I am being asked to take action, agreement with statements being Made will be my fee. In truth, I did not read, but only briefly Scanned what I forwarded and I will not be doing that again. While not wanting to make a huge issue of it, I do not Take for granted at all that all stones from that fall were stolen Except those purchased by Randall. In addition, I believe it to Be of highly questionable value to make a public issue of it, even If it were true. The last thing we need is people screaming, Thief, Thief! (In fact, it reminded me a good deal of the family of nit wits That claim all NWA material EXCEPT THEIRS is not only stolen, But financing terrorism). While not so extreme, the claims by Randall impress me as related. Of course, I could be wrong. My wife often tells me I am. [meteorite-list] Pluto-sized planet embryos detected
Pluto-sized planet embryos detected Objects would represent first evidence of stage of early planet formation By Ker Than Staff Writer Space.com Updated: 11:12 a.m. ET Oct 1, 2007 Puffy debris disks around three nearby stars could harbor Pluto-sized planets-to-be, a new computer model suggests. The planet embryos are predicted to orbit three young, nearby stars, located within about 60 light years or less of our solar system. AU Microscopii and Beta Pictoris are both estimated to be about 12 million years old, while a third star, Fomalhaut, is aged at 200 million years old. If confirmed, the objects would represent the first evidence of a never-before-observed stage of early planet formation. Another team recently spotted space lint around a nearby star that pointed to an even earlier phase of planet building, when baseball-sized clumps of interstellar dust grains are colliding together. The new finding will be detailed in an upcoming issue of the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. Planet puffer-uppers Using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope, the researchers measured the vertical thickness of so-called circumstellar debris disks around the stars, and then used a computer model to calculate the size of planets growing within them. The thickness of a debris disk depends on the size of objects orbiting inside it. The ring of dust thins as the star system ages, but if enough dust has clumped together to form an embryonic planet, it knocks the other dust grains into eccentric orbits. Over time, this can puff up what was a razor-thin disk. The new model the researchers created predicts how large the bodies in a disk must be to puff it up to a certain thickness. The results suggest that each of the three stars studied is harboring a Pluto-sized embryonic planet. Even though [the disks] are pretty thin, they turn out to be thick enough that we think there's something in there puffing them up, said study team member Alice Quillen of the University of Rochester in New York. At least one of the stars is thought to contain at least one other planet in addition to the circling Pluto-sized planet. The circumstellar disk of Fomalhaut contains a void that scientists think is being cleared out by a Neptune-sized world. The researchers think the embryonic planets predicted by their model are too small to clear gaps like this in the disk. If you think of water flowing over pebbles, if the pebbles are very small at the bottom of the water, it doesn't make a good ripple, Quillen told Space.com. Too far? All of the embryonic planets predicted to exist in the three systems are located far away from their parent stars. AU Microscopii's budding planet is estimated to lie about 30 AU from its star, or about the same distance that Pluto is from our sun. One AU is equal to the distance between Earth and the sun. The embryonic planets of Beta Pictoris and Fomalhaut are thought to lie even farther, at 100 and 133 AU, respectively. It is the large distances separating the planet embryos and their stars that have drawn the most criticism by colleagues, Quillen said. Many find it hard to believe that any planet, even a diminutive Pluto-sized one, could form at such a far distance. According to the standard theory of how our solar system formed, Pluto formed much closer to the sun but was then knocked out to its current orbit due to instability in the inner solar system. However, there are objects in our solar system that are located even further from our sun and are difficult to explain by this theory. Sedna, for example, is about three-fourths the size of Pluto and is located about three times farther from the sun. Mordecai-Marc Mac Low, an astrophysicist at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City who was not involved in the study, said the new model should be viewed as a plausibility argument for the presence of Pluto-sized objects rather than proof of their existence. The work presented here shows that Pluto-sized objects stirring disks are consistent with the observed disk thicknesses and other properties, Mac Low said. James Graham, an astronomer at the University of California, Berkeley, who was also not involved in the study, expressed a similar sentiment. This calculation is making a bold extrapolation, Graham said in an e-mail interview. It's bit like describing an elephant given a single cell from that animal. With enough knowledge, this is possible if you know enough about microbiology and genetics and could read the DNA in the cell and in principle envision the entire creature. Quillen is now looking for more young stars to investigate with her model, but the criteria to be a candidate are strict. The systems have to be young enough to still have their circumstellar disks, but old enough to be forming embryonic planets. They must also appear edge-on as seen from Earth and be near enough that Hubble can accurately discern the thickness of their disks. At the moment, the three

[meteorite-list] STEREO Sees Solar Hurricane Detach Comet Tail (Comet 2/P Encke)
Oct. 1, 2007 Dwayne Brown Headquarters, Washington 202-358-1726 [EMAIL PROTECTED] Laura Spector/Nancy Neal Jones Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt Md. 301-286-0918/0039 [EMAIL PROTECTED], [EMAIL PROTECTED] RELEASE: 07-214 NASA SATELLITE SEES SOLAR HURRICANE DETACH COMET TAIL GREENBELT, Md. - A NASA satellite has captured the first images of a collision between a comet and a solar hurricane. It is the first time scientists have witnessed such an event on another cosmic body. One of NASA's pair of Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory satellites, known as STEREO, recorded the event April 20. The phenomenon was caused by a coronal mass ejection, a large cloud of magnetized gas cast into space by the sun. The collision resulted in the complete detachment of the plasma tail of Encke's comet. Observations of the comet reveal the brightening of its tail as the coronal mass ejection swept by and the tail's subsequent separation as it was carried away by the front of the ejection. The researchers combined the images into a movie. We were awestruck when we saw these images, says Angelos Vourlidas, lead author and researcher at the Naval Research Laboratory, Washington. This is the first time we've witnessed a collision between a coronal mass ejection and a comet and the surprise of seeing the disconnection of the tail was the icing on the cake. Encke's comet was traveling within the orbit of Mercury when a coronal mass ejection first crunched the tail then ripped it completely away. The comet is only the second repeating, or periodic, comet ever identified. Halley's comet was the first. Scientists at the Naval Research Laboratory made the observations using the Heliospheric Imager in its Sun Earth Connection Coronal and Heliospheric Investigation telescope suite aboard the STEREO-A spacecraft. The results will be published in the Oct. 10 issue of the Astrophysical Journal Letters. Coronal mass ejections are violent eruptions with masses greater than a few billion tons. They travel from 60 to more than 2,000 miles per second. They have been compared to hurricanes because of the widespread disruption they can cause when directed at Earth. These solar hurricanes cause geomagnetic storms that can present hazards for satellites, radio communications and power systems. However, coronal mass ejections are spread over a large volume of space, mitigating their mass and power to create an impact softer than a baby's breath. Scientists have been aware of the disconnection of the entire plasma tail of a comet for some time, but the conditions that lead to these events remained a mystery. It was suspected that coronal mass ejections could be responsible for some of the disconnected events, but the interaction between a coronal mass ejection and a comet never had been observed. Preliminary analysis suggests the disconnection likely is triggered by what is known as magnetic reconnection, in which the oppositely directed magnetic fields around the comet are crunched together by the magnetic fields in the coronal mass ejection. The comet fields suddenly link together, reconnecting, to release a burst of energy that detaches the comet's tail. A similar process takes place in Earth's magnetosphere during geomagnetic storms, powering the aurora borealis and other phenomena. Comets are icy leftovers from the solar system's formation billions of years ago. They usually reside in the cold, distant regions of the solar system. Occasionally, the gravitational tug from a planet, another comet or a nearby star sends a comet into the inner solar system, where the sun's heat and radiation vaporizes gas and dust from the comet to form its tail. Comets typically have two tails: one of dust and a fainter one of electrically conducting gas called plasma. Even though STEREO is primarily designed to study coronal mass ejections, particularly their impact on Earth, we hope this impact will provide many insights to scientists studying comets, said Michael Kaiser, STEREO project scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Greenbelt, Md. STEREO is the third mission in NASA's Solar Terrestrial Probes program, sponsored by NASA's Science Mission Directorate, Washington. Goddard manages the mission, instruments, and science center. The Heliospheric Imager was built in the United Kingdom by Rutheford Appleton Laboratory and the University of Birmingham with major contributions from the Naval Research Laboratory and the Centre Spatial de Liege, Belgium. Other international partners in the STEREO mission include the European Space Agency and France, Germany, Hungary and Switzerland. [meteorite-list] WG: another Randall post
Von: Randall Gregory [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Gesendet: Montag, 1. Oktober 2007 23:29 An: Martin Altmann Betreff: Re: [meteorite-list] another Randall post Martin, (please post) Thank you for your thoughtful reply. I am not talking about what other meteorite hunters do when they go to the field. An example is Mike Farmer. He went to Columbia risking his life to legitimately buy meteorites from the land-owner. It was a fair and equitable transaction. No looting involved. If he had gone down there, broke into the house and stole the meteorites, then that would be a different story, but Mike does not operate like that. He pays good money to the rightful owners. No harm there. You have my word that the land-owner will be rightfully compensated. You are welcome to accompany me when I return to Carancas. I don't know what the compensation will be, but I guarentee that it will be fair. I didn't enter into this for the money. It is something I enjoy doing. It gives me an opportunity to meet some wonderful people while exploring this beautiful continent. [meteorite-list] 'Super-Meteor' Lights Finland Sky
http://www.yle.fi/news/id71032.html 'Super-Meteor' Lights up Northern Sky YLE News (Finland) September 29, 2007 The apparent superbolide seen over Finland late Friday was many times brighter than these average meteors. Finland's biggest astronomical association, Ursa, says that a light phenomenon seen over much of northern and eastern Finland on Friday night was a meteor -- the brightest seen in the country in more than 30 years. The editor of the organization's journal http://www.avaruus.fi/, Marko Pekkola, says it was a superbolide, a fireball more than 100 times brighter than a full moon. The fireball was apparently caused by a space rock striking the atmosphere over Northern Ostrobothnia and then exploding over Finland. Ursa says the rock may have weighed some 200 kilogrammes. However it was not clear on Saturday whether any meteorites fell to the ground. The dazzling 'shooting star' spurred worried telephone calls to emergency centres in various parts of Finnish Lapland, as far apart as Kemi, Enontekiö and Ivalo. __ Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Re: [meteorite-list] Titicaca meteorite-- phinally, photos
Than you very much for the photos. I am willing to concede that this is probably really a meteorite fall. I had big doubts earlier, because it was so anomalous compared to what we usually expect from a fall (choking vapors, 'boiling' water, no meteorite recovered at first, little scientific information either except for the media hype). I look forward to the final analysis. Supposedly the area was shelled with additional small rocks. Has anyone recovered any of these other pieces? If they found some that hadn't been sitting in the bottom of a noxious puddle for several days, that would be even more scientifically valuable.
