Re: [meteorite-list] schools, universities, research facilities for donations

2007-12-08 Thread matt
Bob,

I rarely get involved in these rantings, but your post is an absurd,
unwarranted and petty piece of baiting. If *you* are so altruistic why
don't *you* choose to sell a few of your pieces and donate the proceeds
to good causes?

Sure Steve has made mistakes on this list, but his motives for this post
are far more well intentioned than yours. I have actually taken Steve up
on his offer as I teach Science, Physics and Astronomy to 11-18 year
olds. You say that 'Not much to be discovered from a few pieces of
Campo.' but you have clearly never witnessed the awe and wonder when the
most common of space rocks are placed in the hands of a young student.
It's invaluable and inspirational.

If you have personal issues with Steve, then keep them to yourself. It's
not appropriate to flame him over a post that is entirely fitting with
the intentions of most on this list to promote the study of, and
education about, meteorites.

I will not be dragged into a battle of words, so this is likely my only
comment on the matter.

Thank you for reading...

Matt.

How about this alternative? Sell em on ebay and give the money to some
poor widow who lost her husband in Irag.
I'll bet she could use the money to buy a few toys for the kids who
 lost thier father.

 Just a thought.

[meteorite-list] cut big campo

2007-12-08 Thread David Kitt Deyarmin
First you have to ask yourself why you're cutting it and how you want it
cut.

Are you cutting it for resell?

If so do you want full slices ?

Do you want huge end cuts or all slices with minimal end cuts.

Do you want to slab it, then process the slabs into slices and end cuts?

This is just a few of the questions a cutter would have ask before taking
the job.

Contact me off list at bobadebt at ec.rr.com with your phone number and I
could call you to discuss this in more depth.

BUT if your just talking about the available ways to cut it I can think of
3.

The most conventional way is to use a band saw but for one this size you
would need a large band saw and it would be a long process and at machine
shop rates it would cost a fortune, so it could be cost prohibitive. The
only way this method would be affordable was if there was someone like me
willing to do the work for a reduced fee and/or some material

If it's not to tall I could cut it on my liquid cooled abrasive saw but it
would be very work intensive which would end up costing a lot so this method
could be cost prohibitive unless I'm interested in the material.

I'm not sure if it could be cut with a wire saw but if it could it would be
cost prohibitive.

If its really big you could use a combination of the first 2 methods. Use a
machine shop to cut it into 3 pieces (with a band saw) that are easier to
handle and then I could process each piece but I would have to be interested
in the material to do the work.

Hmm I have the same feeling.
Showing beautifull meteorite and sending it with description like Its

I think owner could send us more info like place of find, year and if this
was checked or not (any sample was cut-off or not?).

Anyway beautifull
