[meteorite-list] Nickel content of CV's
Do CV's contain nickel? Here's what Jeff Grossman wrote on Monday, April 19, 1999: In fact, Allende has almost no metal, if what you mean is metallic Fe-Ni. Jarosewich (1990) measured ~0.5 wt% metallic iron plus nickel in Allende. Most of the metal in these oxidized CV3 chondrites is the high-Ni alloy awaruite. There was once low-Ni metal (kamacite), but late stage oxidation has destroyed it all. There is a big debate going on as to whether this sort of process happened during parent body aqueous alteration or earlier, in the solar nebula. Re: [meteorite-list] Ensisheim: What is the TRUE FALL DATE??
Hi Don, The fall of Ensisheim took place on November 7th, 1492. In 1582, the pope Grégoire XIII, noticing the gap (the Julian calendar adopted in the year 45 before Christ contains 365 days 1/4. The tropic year have 365,2422 days, the annual gap is of 0,0078 days, that is of 3,12 days every four centuries.) which gets bigger years after years between the date of Easter and the spring solstice, decides to reform the Julian calendar to align itself with the astronomical reality. He thus proceeds to the deletion of ten days in the year and reforms the system of bissextile years by saying that will be bissextile only the divisible years by 400. Since this time there, the year corresponds has 365,2425 days, what pulls a gap of 0,0003 day with regard to tropic year, that is 3 days every 1 years. The adoption of this new Gregorian calendar varies according to countries: the catholic countries quickly adopted it because the order emanated from the Church but certain countries conformed to it only late as, for example, Great Britain in 1752, China in 1912 or Greece in 1923. Re: [meteorite-list] Ensisheim: What is the TRUE FALL DATE??
Hi Don, Maaybe some numerologist added the numerals 1 and 6 [November 16th] to get the 7. :) Gary Hi List. Can someone tell me why there is a discrepancy to the fall date of Ensisheim? I see some World Class Museums as well as articles with specimen photo's of Ensisheim and they state Fell November 16th 1492 Yet I see other reference articles and meteorite info data bases state Fell November 7th 1492 Is there a reason to this? Are the dates both right? Slightly confused on this. [meteorite-list] eBay and bogus meteorites
Hi Bob and All! I am going to speculate a bit here about why eBay does not crack down on sellers like this. Over the past year, I have run across several auctions on eBay that had obvious problems. This was before I started collecting meteorites, and the auctions in question were for telescopes and eyepieces. Either the telescope was a reproduction being passed off as a genuine antique, or it was other issues such as the seller misrepresenting the location of the item. When I filed a complaints with eBay, I received a typical form letter type of response and no action was taken against the sellers. In some cases, an obvious fraud auction was pulled, but the sellers were not punished in any noticeable way. One seller of green laser pointers was claiming to have the pointers in stock here in the US, but they were actually shipped directly from the overseas manufacturer. Numerous other buyers had complained about this seller and left neutral or negative feedbacks saying as much. But yet this seller was not banned or suspended and continues to sell misrepresented laser pointers. And to top it off, this particular seller is an eBay Power Seller. Here is what I think is going on : eBay is struggling with it's slowing growth and there has been a drop in new listings and overall revenue for the site. eBay's stock has also dropped and their earning reports are not great either. I think eBay is getting a little greedy or desperate for revenue, so they are letting a lot of stuff like this slide by - especially from Power Sellers which are eBay's bread and butter. By banning these sellers, eBay will be losing a lot money in the way of fees. Unless a seller is doing something that is blatantly illegal and could get eBay into hot water, the powers that be are going to look the other way with this stuff. That's just my pet theory anyway. Until eBay gets serious with enforcing it's own rules, then I am only going to purchase specimens from IMCA members, members of this list, or sellers that I am personally acquainted with. And what does the specimen weight mean? Is that the specimen that is being sold? Obviously not 1655 grams! Or is that the TKW? Or is that the size of the specimen that was tested before they sliced off this specimen? It's amazing that fraud can proliferate like this without someone throwing them in jail. I wish eBay could crack down on people like this (no jail time, but boot them off of eBay). Even if this guy was innocent and was sold the specimen and COA by someone else, he should still be reprimanded because he obviously doesn't have a reputable source and doesn't care. [meteorite-list] Last NWA 5000 Update Before Leaving For Tucson
Dear List Members, Just a reminder for those attending the Tucson show to be sure to check out Northwest Africa 5000, The Cosmic Masterpiece in room 230 at the Inn Suites. A few team members are already in place and brought with them an excellent display system. We will have everything set up in room 230 tomorrow afternoon including an astonishing inventory. Unfortunately, the inventory will be pulled at around 4:00 pm Saturday because we are leaving early Sunday morning, so be sure to take a peek before then. The Rock will definitely leave a lasting impression. The portfolios and appraisals for each rated piece were finally completed this morning. Each portfolio contains a specimen-specific description, specimen image, serialized/laminated ID card and pages of notes for each and every appraised piece including the slice in Michael Bloods auction. The independent appraisal came in on item number AH-8 in the Blood auction. It appraised at $14,300.00 so somebody is likely to pick up a great deal. It can be previewed in Anne and Geoffs room, as well. A registry for those who purchase examples of Northwest Africa 5000 will be on hand so be sure to put your name on it for future posterity as every piece will be tracked. Even $20.00 specimens are serialized and included on the registry so nobody will be left out. For advanced collectors, there will be some world-class offerings. As I stated before, Northwest Africa 5000 is still a work-in-progress and a special feature has come to light, which I will discuss during and after the show so stay tuned. Scientists are intrigued! I guess it would also be a good idea to keep any eye out for any surface blemishes that might develop on this individual from any internal acidic secretions. I believe in that case, you coat the affected part with an oil of some sort! Congratulations and best wishes!
