Re: [meteorite-list] Fwd: The SkyRock Cafe

2008-02-18 Thread Lasse Lindh

Hi Dave, Joe and all

I'm a quite new member of Skyrock cafe. I joined a few months ago. I'm
pretty new to meteorite hunting and collecting. Skyrock cafe was, and
is, a perfect place for me to learn and to share my thought, ideas and
show my collection.

I have been met with respect in a friendly enviroment at Skyrock. We
feel like one big familiy and many of us that are really active are
quite new to the hobbie and eager to learn. We have also knowlegeable
members, both hunters and collectors among us that willingly share their
knowledge in a friendly way.

Some of us like the email based Meteorite List and some of us like the
online forum better. Both has something to give.

I'm pretty sure that Joe did not mean to be disrespectful , but is a bit
tired of people that question the existence of Skyrock cafe. If I was
presented by a new forum, my first thought would be, How nice, I'll
check it out. It would not be, What does it doing unique or otherwise
different than the met list?

Skyrock Cafe is a very nice place no matter what others say.

Kind regards

Lasse

found authentic meteorites, one in Brazil and one in Australia. and a
few in Az. What do you offer? beside talking shit? Many people
compliment me about the SkyRock Cafe, it is only about once every 6
months I have a jack ass like you trying to bring it down. Why would
you even ask me a question like that? We have many active members,
some who are there everyday, many more are there a few times a week.
So if you do not want to join than just stay away, we will not miss
you, One thing that is not aloud on the forum that always goes on here
on the list are people like you who say things which are meant to
disrespect another meteorite collector/hunter, we have a laid back
atmosphere where you do not need to worry about being disrespected by
jerks like you, that is what the SkyRock Cafe offers that the list
does not.

Hello Listees,
I just wanted to take a second to invite everyone to join us at

We now have over 120 active members. We have been around since

[meteorite-list] the meteorite cafe

2008-02-18 Thread steve arnold
Good morning list.I think it is a good thing what Joe
has done.He has differently brought out more of the
Illinois meteorite collectors.I am a member and I post
at least 2 or 3 times a week.But like lasse said,down
there you feel like you are part of a close knit
family. In alot of the posts there I have seen
excitement, zeal, passion, etc. To me I see myself down
there.I love these rocks.I know sometimes my passion
gets a little over board, but most people on this list
see it.But on the cafe I am still a newbie.I seem to
only post when I see something I want to post
about.Joe has done a great thing.Also I met Dave g. in
Tucson.What a great guy.Always respectful,saying
hello, just being nice to me.And we crossed paths
alot.Joe's forum is the last place I would expect to
see any negativity.I really recommend that more
members of this list give Joe's forum a try.It has it
all.Nice people.Great threads!Lots of nice pics.And
most of all, just an aura of niceness.Extreme passion!I
will try a spend more time there.I hope to add a
little expertise to that forum.Joe you have done a
good job.Keep it up.

[meteorite-list] Angrite Front Runners and Abstracts

2008-02-18 Thread Greg Hupe

Dear List Members and Angrite Collectors,

Pete asks:
Of the three (angrites) listed (NWA 2999, NWA 4590 Tamassint, NWA 4801),
Greg, which would you consider as the front runner? I hope it's NWA 2999 as
that's the only one I have of those three that you've listed. Pete

Pete, I consider all three of the angrites I have brought to the scientific
and collecting world, with help from the nomadic finders and my Moroccan
partners, as front runners. If it were not these angrites, many analytical
testing may not have been considered. Take for instance the abstract titled
Magnetism On The Angrite Parent Body by Dr. Benjamin Weiss of MIT in
Boston. I and my most recent angrite, NWA 4931 (new 2140 gram main mass
paired to NWA 2999) were flown up to MIT to have a core sample taken from
this large stone. This was important because Dr. Weiss could then perform
clean magnetism testing from a sample that was hopefully not subjected to
Moroccan or other's magnets. This is a very time consuming testing process
and the coring took place in October 2007. Here is Dr. Weiss's abstract,
which does not include NWA 4931 because it was not yet discovered during his
initial testing:

http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meetings/lpsc2008/pdf/2143.pdf

Here is an abstract presented by Drs Amelin and Irving reporting ages of
angrites NWA 2999, NWA 4590 Tamassint and NWA 4801:

http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meetings/metchron2007/pdf/4061.pdf

Here is another interesting abstract discussing constraints for existence of
a core on the APB:

http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meetings/lpsc2008/pdf/1936.pdf

I hope this helps you decide which is the front runner, which may be in
the scientific data each reveals or simply a matter of beauty as seen by
each individual collector. All three are completely different in appearance.

Best regards,
Greg

[meteorite-list] Question: Strange Texture in the Laochenzhen Meteorite (Bernd?)

2008-02-18 Thread Mike Bandli
The Laochenzhen meteorite fell in Henan Province, China on February 23, 1987
and was classified as an H5. Below you will find a photo of a 4.4 gram part
slice:

http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2004-11/877141/Laochenzhen-1042,1-SMALL.jpg

Unfortunately there is little published about this fall and I cannot find
any photos of slices in other collections out there. I noticed an unusual
textural change in my part slice, which was very difficult to photograph. I
added red lines to the same photo below to show what I am trying to explain:

http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2004-11/877141/Laochenzhen-1042,1-SMALL-LINES
.jpg

The texture on the left is almost perpendicular to the one on the right. You
can see that tiny crevasses are present where the two textures meet. They
are not saw marks. Is this some sort of melt area? What is this? Bernd? Any
help would be greatly appreciated.

Kind regards,

[meteorite-list] Carancas to get a meteorite museum

Peru: Investors from Japan to build meteorite museum in Puno

(LIP-ir) -- Peru's Geological, Mining and Metallurgical Institute (INGEMMET)
announced that Japanese businessmen have planned to build a space museum in
Carancas, Puno (795 miles southeast of Lima), the region where a meteorite
landed in September 2007.

Construction is to begin in April and $90 thousand are to be invested in the
state of the art museum that will be able to withstand Puno's extreme weather
conditions, said Hernando Núñez del Prado, director of institute affairs for the
INGEMMET.

Aside from exhibiting pieces of the chondrite, the museum will give visitors
information on aerospace science and astrophysics related to cosmic phenomenon.

Núñez del Prado explained the crater where the meteorite had landed would remain
covered by a 20x20 meter piece of canvas to keep it from being affected by the
heavy rainfall in Puno.

He also stated a law was being proposed to protect the country from meteorite
hunters.

Furthermore, National Geographic has announced it will present a documentary in
four languages this year on the meteorite that landed in Puno, said Rocío Gómez
Paredes, a natural resources manager fro the regional government of Puno.

Re: [meteorite-list] Carancas to get a meteorite museum

2008-02-18 Thread Michael Farmer
Amazing, a museum, in a place where no-one has running
water, or electricity? In the middle of no-where,
where tourists will not go, where a mudhole is all
that remains of the crater?
The money will be stolen by same corrupt government
officials that allowed whatever was left of the
meteorite to rot away.
At least us meteoritehunters saved some of the
meteorite for the future, if Peru had its way, even
that material would have been lost, or left to turn
into mud.
These people would be better off throwing their money
into the toilet, it would at least not make government
officials richer while the locals starve.
