RELEASE: 08-103

NASA STATEMENT ON STUDENT ASTEROID CALCULATIONS

WASHINGTON -- The Near-Earth Object Program Office at NASA's Jet
Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., has not changed its
current estimates for the very low probability (1 in 45,000) of an
Earth impact by the asteroid Apophis in 2036.

Contrary to recent press reports, NASA offices involved in near-Earth
object research were not contacted and have had no correspondence
with a young German student, who claims the Apophis impact
probability is far higher than the current estimate.

This student's conclusion reportedly is based on the possibility of a
collision with an artificial satellite during the asteroid's close
approach in April 2029. However, the asteroid will not pass near the
main belt of geosynchronous satellites in 2029, and the chance of a
collision with a satellite is exceedingly remote.

Therefore, consideration of this satellite collision scenario does not
affect the current impact probability estimate for Apophis, which
remains at 1 in 45,000.

I have bid on a number of items at the last Bonham auction, and everything
went extremely well. I won 2 items with the opening bid, way below the
maximum that I had bid online, and I won one other item while on the phone
with them, bidding live.
Shipping was handled via a shipping agent that Bonham had recommended.
Within a day of the auction they picked my items up at the Bonham office,
packed it up and shipped it with FedEx overnight. It cost a few hundred
bucks, but for all that it seemed reasonable.
That was my experience anyways.
I am looking forward to the coming auction - looks like they have some good
stuff lined up again.
All the best...,...

Subject: AD: Auctions this week, some real choice items!

Hello,

I have listed some sweet items this week, both as auctions and as store
inventory.  Hopefully, I will add another 200 new meteorites to the
inventory this week…IF I get the time to do so…

ALSO, All of my SUPER RARE, SUPER EXPENSIVE Meteorites have good
provenance!  As I stated about 1 month ago, I have a great selection of one
of a kind (OLD) or LIMITED NEMS (Russ Kempton) Specimens. I also have
purchased a good deal of NEMS inventory which has never been released in the
last decade or longer.  So, for some of you dealers who sneak around and try
and get leads or information from me, know that I got my specimens from
NEMS, but you are not going to get any, because I got most of them.  In MY
Auctions and Inventory, ALL my Meteorites are Authentic and as Stated!  NO –
If, And, Or, Buts!

Go to this link, and click on auctions…I think this works better.

find out why he is filing the claim.I never hear one thing from bob as to why
he did it.I email him 3 times as to find out what the hell is going
on.NOTHING!!Well 2 weeks later after the claim paypal finds him in favor. For a
lousy $60.I just want to know why he did it.Still know answer.Well after he
gets his money,no park forest is returned to me.I have asked him twice.Still
nothing.I know I cannot ask the IMCA to intervene because I am not a member, but
I would like to be.But hay,if you got back your friggin' money just return my
property to me and we will call it a day.But like mac has gone thru with him,I
have dealt with him many times because of the

If I understood well, the right thing to do with a new meteorite is to
sell it in ebay!
I prefer to say that a standard protocole must urgently be implemented by
the authorities of each country, with the objective of properly mapping
the strewfield, collecting and preserve all the material for serious
scientific studies.

I hate to see little turtles and coins made of meteorites, for sale.

We need only look to Peru to understand the expertise and efficiency that
governments can bring to bear in order to secure critical scientific
data.

The carpetbaggers that plundered the site of the recent fall merely
recorded locations, masses, eyewitness accounts, and such like. They did
absolutely nothing to secure the all-important mud hole! Maybe they are
not all bad, though. They did donate specimens to scientists that had
real

microscopes and ion probes and what not.

Concerning the unknown they are losing, is that the known-unknown or
the

unknown-unknown?

Paul Swartz

Any scientific data that is lost to the country. Right now it might seem
trivial, but just like antiquities, they are a non-renewable resource.
That
meteorite will never fall again.
And in the future, knowing where strewnfields are, how they oriented,
what
class and quantity, could have some significant meaning.
It's the unknown they are loosing.

[meteorite-list] Chondrule close up!

2008-04-17 Thread STARSANDSCOPES
Hi chondrule fan list members, I wanted to share some micrographs of a
chondrule. The material is no big deal. (It is pending but it looks like it
will be L4/5.)

A chondrule? You have got to see these shots. They were taken in incident
(reflected) cross polarized light which, unlike transmitted Xpol, is true
color. Just what it looks like up close. My first love in meteorite
microscope
examination!

No thin section, just a hand sample polished to 1/4 micron.

I have 5 images that I can put in an email (nothing to down load).

If you like chondrules, you will want to see this one.

I have done this before and I am up to nothing. I am not harvesting email
addresses! It may be some time before classification is complete and I won't
post images to the Gallery until it is named. Some of you have received
email image files from me before, perhaps you could let the others know I am
just sharing some cool shots and nothing more!
