[meteorite-list] (Sarcasm) - Meteorite Deal of the Century!

2009-01-20 Thread Michael Gilmer
Ok folks, don't trample each other to take advantage of this spectacular
deal on a Sikhote Alin shrapnel.

About .8 grams of questionable Sikhote from Rissia for $150!

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItemitem=390025323944

I'll take 20 for resale!

Seriously though, it's funny that the seller is putting his tiny
meteorite specimen in a glass crack vial - since you'd have to be
smoking crack to buy this.

The wide variation in meteorite prices never ceases to amaze me.

On the more realistic side, I did score a .2gr piece of Claxton for
under $25. (not from this seller of course!) ;)

Regards and clear skies,

MikeG

[meteorite-list] [AD?] Tucson 09 Major New Gem Show Website

2009-01-20 Thread Notkin

Dear Listees:

Greetings all. Not sure if this is an ad or a service announcement? : )

Well, it is warm and sunny in Tucson today, and I hear from one of my
spies downtown that the big parking lots are being cleared out in
preparation for the tents to go up.

This will be my 13th consecutive gem show and, in all that time, I've
always felt there was something missing -- an original, up-to-date
website dedicated exclusively to the Tucson shows. Yes, there are lots
of websites with dates and listings and show reviews, and so on, but I
wanted more.

So, we built one for you.

The new site was designed, written, researched and photographed
entirely by gem show professionals who live and work here in Tucson.
As such, we offer all kinds of local insider information that Colored
Stone and the like just don't have. The new site contains, among
other things:

- A hip restaurant and dining guide with a multitude of restaurant and
cafe tips; most recommended venues are located very close to the shows

- Tucson bar, music and nightlife guide
- A brilliant essay on how to make the most of the show by Tucson
native and show professional Lisa Marie of Sirocco Design
- Where to stay: A guide to some of my favorite Tucson hotels, many of
which often still have rooms at or near showtime

- The best day trips out of Tucson, with photos and contact info
- A gallery of our favorite show photos from the past 12 years
- Pages on the weather, a brief history of Tucson, and general
visitor's info including road closures
- And, of course, a complete listing of every one of the 45+ shows,
with locations, dates, contact info. As there are a couple of new,
independent, local shows opening this year, we actually have THE most
complete show listing of any of the guides

We will also be adding a Special Events page with details about
Michael's auction, the Birthday Bash, etc.

This website is intended as a service to the community. I hope you
enjoy it and find it useful:

www.tucsongemandmineralshows.net

A SPECIAL OFFER TO LIST MEMBERS

To mark the launch of the new site, I am making a one-time special
offer to Meteorite List members. I am offering a very limited number
of FREE featured vendor listings to list members who will be
exhibitors at the '09 gem show, with a photo, details about your
showroom and business, and a link to your website. If you would like
your site to be considered, please email me OFF-LIST for details.

Here are the current featured listings:

http://tucsongemandmineralshows.net/tucson-show-vendors.htm

In addition,we will consider link exchanges with any List member sites
(non Tucson vendors) from our links page. I fully expect www.tucsongemandmineralshows.net
to become one of the top online gem show resources, so this is a
great PR opportunity for your site or business. Please contact me off-
List for details.

Finally, the Tenth Annual Meteor Mayhem Birthday Bash and Harvey
Awards will take place on Friday, February 6 at a very chic, new
downtown Tucson venue. I will post details separately.

Looking forward to seeing many of you here, very soon! Brings shorts
and sunglasses : )

Geoff N.

Re: [meteorite-list] Barack Obama - 44th President of the United States of America

2009-01-20 Thread Darryl Pitt

Bernd and List,

I wasn't going to comment on this, but, just returned from the
inaugural.

It was cold. And it was breathtaking being part of this mass of
humanity.

My day job is managing the careers of musicians---primarily black jazz
musicians, two of whom performed at an inaugural event last night.
And what has struck me so profoundly in Washington the last few days
is how total strangers, regardless of race, creed or color---are so
unusually friendly with one another. It felt like I was peering into
an alternative reality. When I mentioned this to a black friend, she
mentioned she noticed the same and said something rather striking:
It's as everyone here is revealing what we really all want; it's what
humanity naturally craves...and that's feeling a sense of
togethernessand now there is a moment bringing us together and not
a moment too soon.

What a day. Looking forward to the inaugural balls tonight before
reality sets back in.

Wishing everyone the best---where ever you are---particularly those in
greatest need.

Still cold (but smiling)...

Darryl

[meteorite-list] An open letter to the men and women of Tucson! :)

2009-01-20 Thread Michael Gilmer
Hi folks!

As another Tucson show nears, the second in my brief time enjoying
meteorites, I find myself subject to a mix of conflicting emotions.

First, I am excited and thrilled. This is the time of year when old
trends are broken and new trends are set. This is the time of year
when collectors and dealers alike are clearing out their closets and
offering up great deals to finance their pilgrimage to Tucson.
Everyone is clamoring over new falls and new developments. The
Michael Blood auction is around the corner and hosting servers start
to groan under the strain of absentee bids and last minute window
shoppers. Old pieces that haven't seen light of day in years are
brought out to admire or trade. And new pieces that have never seen
the light of day are brought out for the first time. Even for those
of us who cannot attend in person, we stand to benefit from the fresh
injection of material and data into the meteorite market. For me
personally, I have already reaped the rewards to some extent - I
got super deals recently on Claxton and Peekskill, thanks in large
part to the influence of the impending show in the Arizona desert.

Second, I am disappointed and regretful. Personal obligations will
prevent me from attending this year in person. I look forward to
going so badly, that each of these last two years has been an
agonizing time when the show comes and goes. I dwell on the great
deals and great people I am missing out on. I know that no matter
how good the writeups are afterwards, or how good the chatter is on
The List, I won't be able to eat a piece of Twink's Gold Basin cake
or bid live at Michael's auction. I'll have to settle for the
generous accounts and photos shared by others, so that we homebodies
can attend vicariously through them.

Third, I am excited again, once the show is over. Because then
everyone goes home with their newly-acquired goodies, and the
specimens begin to trickle out into the wider marketplace. Falls
and finds previously unavailable will soon be on eBay for .99 cents
opening bid. And information previously unavailable will be
disseminated throughout the collecting community as people retell
the tales they heard around the warm wine-stocked dinner tables of
Tucson. The show will act as a vigorous constitutional for the entire
field of meteoritics and the hobby of collecting meteorites.

Lastly, I am offering $25 plus the costs of actual FedEx Overnight
shipping for a small piece of Twink's Gold Basin cake. It doesn't
have to be big. It can be like a micromount - big enough to identify
and enjoy, but not too big to break the bank. A 3x4 Riker box full
will be plenty. Seriously. This isn't a joke. If someone wants
to FedEx me a piece, contact me offlist and I will take care of the
expense by the time of the show.

Good luck, god speed, and everyone have fun!

MikeG

[meteorite-list] Any preliminary news on Las Palmas?

2009-01-20 Thread Michael Gilmer
Hi List!

I was wondering if there has been any recent word on the Las Palmas

Has anyone etched a piece of this yet, and can they share the photos?

I have a nice 45 gram individual shaped like a bottle opener or a key,
and I'd like to have a label made for it. But right now I don't know
what name to put on it - Las Palmas, Campo del Cielo, or ???

Re: [meteorite-list] Barack Obama - 44th President of the UnitedStates of America

2009-01-20 Thread Matthias Bärmann

What a wonderful and spontaneous report, Darryl, thank you!

I've been watching the ceremony only on TV, but I received a similar
impression - moving.

Of course reality will set back in - but this experience is real too.

Perhaps the series of observed fireballs during the last days and nights
only happened to arrange a nice firework to honor the 44th President of the
USA ;-)

So just keep on smiling.

My best,

what has struck me so profoundly in Washington the last few days is how
total strangers, regardless of race, creed or color---are so unusually
friendly with one another. It felt like I was peering into an
alternative reality. When I mentioned this to a black friend, she
mentioned she noticed the same and said something rather striking: It's
as everyone here is revealing what we really all want; it's what humanity
naturally craves...and that's feeling a sense of togethernessand now
there is a moment bringing us together and not a moment too soon.

What a day. Looking forward to the inaugural balls tonight before
reality sets back in.

Wishing everyone the best---where ever you are---particularly those in
greatest need.

Still cold (but smiling)...

[meteorite-list] AD : The Physics of Comets and Meteors - rare Russian translation for sale

2009-01-20 Thread Michael Gilmer
Hi Listees!

A few months back I offered some 1960's vintage NASA meteorite-related
books to the list. Going through my pile of stuff while packing for
the move to Tampa, I ran across another rare text that may be of
interest to some readers of this list.

The Physics of Comets and Meteors by V.P. Konopleva, Editor

Translated from the original Russian by the Israel Program for
Scientific Translations, NASA, and the National Science Foundation.

Published in 1966 and printed in Jerusalem. 92 pages with tables,
graphs, photos, and drawings. This particular copy is stamped
from the Carnegie Institution, Mount Wilson Observatory Library.

Condition is excellent with no major flaws and only minor shelf wear.
The binding is tight and all pages are crisp.

Table of Contents : (I will omit the numerous Russian author names)
--

Photometry of Comets using 1963-1964 Patrol Photographs

Detailed Photometry of Comet Arend-Roland 1956h

The Radius of Existence of C2 and C3 molecules in Comets

Dissociation and Ionization of Water Molecules in Cometary Atmospheres

Intrinsic Brightness of Comet Ikeya 1963a

Visual Observations of Comet Alcock 1963b

Statistical Characteristics of the Meteor Radio Echo in the Epoch of the 1963
Geminids

Some Results of the Application of Intermediate-type trains in Measurements of
Electron Line Density

Propagation of Electromagnetic Waves in a moving Gyrotopic Medium

The Drift of Meteor Trains

Some Problems of the Theory and New Methods of Observation of Meteors

On the Subject of the Trajectory and the Orbit of the Tunguska Comet

 Howard,

I keep reading about how this list is supposed to be just all about
meteorites, then someone like you prints something hateful and strictly
political and almost no one says a word. I've never been partial to
hypocrisy, so every time I see an email that has *nothing* to do with
meteorites and everything to do with hate, I call the individual on it.
Tell me, Howard, what did your email have to do with the subject of this
 list...namely meteorites?
Perhaps it would be OK if once a week or so I were to bring up things of a
political nature that I'd like to air out. Would you like that? Is that OK

I have 80% of this country, and more like 99% of the world on my side on this
one. I did'nt bring it up, but today is the best day I have had in 8 years. I

Barak Obama is our president, if you are not supporting him, you are a

good for the goose, if good for the gander, right?
My last comment on this subject I hope.

Hey Howie.

While it's certainly your right to advertise your opinion, try not to
be so ignorant when you do it.

It's The Hague (as in Netherlands)not Haag (as in Robert).

The one thing I have definitely learned about this list - acutally the point
was driven home quite clearly the other night by the correspondence between
two members which I commented on:

This list abhores hatred, foul-mouthing other individuals and intolerance -

- unless of course the these words have to do with meteorite dealings
between members.

That is perfectly acceptable, and not one other comment was posted is
support of mine.

I fully expect
 www.tucsongemandmineralshows.net
to become one of the top online gem show resources, so this is a
great PR opportunity for your site or business. Please contact me off-
 List for details.

Finally, the Tenth Annual Meteor Mayhem Birthday Bash and Harvey
Awards will take place on Friday, February 6 at a very chic, new
downtown Tucson venue. I will post details separately.

Looking forward to seeing many of you here, very soon! Brings shorts
 and sunglasses : )

Well, it is warm and sunny in Tucson today, and I hear from one of my

This will be my 13th consecutive gem show and, in all that time, I've

I fully expect
 www.tucsongemandmineralshows.net
to become one of the top online gem show resources, so this is a
great PR opportunity for your site or business. Please contact me off-
 List for details.

Finally, the Tenth Annual Meteor Mayhem Birthday Bash and Harvey
Awards will take place on Friday, February 6 at a very chic, new
downtown Tucson venue. I will post details separately.

Looking forward to seeing many of you here, very soon! Brings shorts
 and sunglasses : )

[meteorite-list] Bush, Obama, the alien perspective and a bit of science, too

2009-01-20 Thread Rob McCafferty
I apologise for adding to this contentious issue but as a British subject, I
feel appropriate to make a few points

1: Yes, Mike. I think you're right, most of the rest of the world accepts Barak
Obama with open arms. There can be no denying that most of the rest of the
world thought Bush Jr. was a buffoon. I apologise for the non-meteorite related
nature of this point.

2: Having said that, NASA seem, now, to be committed to a return to the moon. I
am delighted by that as a citizen of the world. Only the US can really afford
such a venture and it was Bush who made the commitment. As a collector of lunar
meteorites, I am not concerned about the value of my stock. It wouldn't
surprise me if it went up, at least in my lifetime. No, I consider it far more
important that we go back. We will learn far more about the moon and possibly,
our own meteorites by going back to study the place. We must never forget, had
we not gone there in the late 60s/early 70s, we would not know with certainty
that the rocks we own come form there. The Moon is an important staging post to
Mars. One day we will go there. It will provide us with more informations about
our SNCs and maybe help us identify and rocks from Mars that look far more
terrestrial in origin. We know Mars has sedimentary rocks, now. Why are they
absent in our collections? That
we may eventually know the answer to these questions, makes me glad that the
decision to return to the moon was made.

3: Having heard about the Maple Leaves, I am intrigued and concerned. I'd love
to know more about them but I'd prefer to hear it off-list, direct from the
contributor that brought it to our attention in jest/irony.

May this be an end to the GWB matter?

(somehow I doubt it. Oh well)

Re: [meteorite-list] Good By Bush - the nightmare is over

2009-01-20 Thread MeteorHntr
Hey List,

In an effort to pull this topic from the realms of Hate onto some topics
both political AND meteorite related.

Army First, NASA Last, at least that was the order in the Inauguration
Parade.
http://voices.washingtonpost.com/inauguration-watch/2009/01/heres_the_order_of_the_parade.html

It seems President Obama wants to add several billion more dollars to the
NASA budget.
http://www.smartbrief.com/news/aia/storyDetails.jsp?issueid=2166D29F-1CEA-460F
-9E54-719B34CB061Acopyid=6C817626-281D-49DE-BC60-F90256CC4D69

It seems President Obama has seen fit to not keep on the Bush appointed
Michael Griffn head of NASA with a new person. It seems Griffin could not
support the direction Obama wanted to agency to go, so he resigned:
http://www.aero-news.net/index.cfm?ContentBlockID=f3f1e104-22e2-418a-aed2-cf0b
c6ec1ee0

It will be interesting to see if the new president wants to spend the money
to go to Mars and/or possibly back to the Moon, like Griffin wanted to. Or if
President Obama will want to use NASA to combat climate change instead, as
some people think NASA should do.
http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=nasa-and-climate-change

As for the direct relationship to Meteorites, I think if NASA sends people
to the Moon again, or takes astronauts to Mars it would provide more PR in the
news that only helps in generating interest in planetary specimens. If our
exploration in space stops, then I think it only slows down the spread of the
 popularity of meteorite collecting.

With much of NASA being in Texas, it will be interesting how much of the
extra government spending will be made there to stimulate the economy, of if
extra government money will go to other areas in more need. Many of the Big
Oil companies are in Texas, and it seems their economy is doing much better
than many other places in the country. A case might be made that stimulus
spending might be better used elsewhere such as with the big auto makers in
Detroit, rather than with big space ship makers elsewhere.

I noticed that President Obama made the comment something today about
returning science to it's rightful place. So maybe that means more money will
be
spent on science, even if it might not mean space travel. Maybe more will be
spent going to Antarctica. Maybe there will be more grant money for
institutions to buy more meteorites.

We can only Hope...

[meteorite-list] Politics, Obama, The Chicago Machine

2009-01-20 Thread bill kies

I can't listen to all this starry eyed nonsense. The fact is, we have a new
president with no political record or real experience stepping into a job that
thankfully will be regulated by our three tiered system of government composed
of other fine dedicated public servants with no vested interests, only seeking
change, large sums of change, not small change... His Chicago connections don't
add to his resume.

There isn't anything to say or do but wait and see so please let this subject
go. It's interfering with interesting meteorite rants.

I think pretty much every president since the end of Apollo gave some
lip-service to the idea of going back to the moon or to Mars when they thought
it gave them a political boost-- but those ambitious goals are always quickly
forgotten. We went to the moon with the Apollo program not because the
politicians cared about science but because they wanted to beat the Russians.
If we do go back to the moon and to Mars, it'll be to beat the Chinese. Except
I don't think that we will beat the Chinese. China and India are serious about
developing their space programs, and you can't tell me that they don't have a
level of technology that can reach what we had in the 1960s-- and not only will
their economies be bigger than the US economy in the 1960s, they are likely to
pass the US economy of TODAY-- we are on our way down from being the top dog
(and a new president isn't going to stop that). I expect China to beat us back
to the moon. Maybe India, too. Especially if they decide to pool resources.
Japan has space ambitions, too (and the world's second largest economy). Europe
could afford an Apollo if they wanted it.

But I will keep track of you Obama supporters and when six months to a year

Time will tell how well he stacks up to what everyone seems to expect of him.

And--

I find the Aziz-Farmer debate rather amusing.

But I would really like to know more about that fireball that was spotted here
in AZ. At around 4:30 PM on the 19th, I was on my roof shoveling snow off the
flat part. I heard a very weird noise seeming to come from the south. A
series of sharp cracks, like busting wood. Difficult to describe the sound.
It was overcast, and I turned to look in the south direction, but thought that
it might have been something related to the railroad. I thought nothing of it
till I heard of this sighting.

Now I wonder.

Has any other reports come in on this explosive bolide.

What a wonderful and spontaneous report, Darryl, thank you!

I've been watching the ceremony only on TV, but I received a similar

Of course reality will set back in - but this experience is real too.

Perhaps the series of observed fireballs during the last days and nights

So just keep on smiling.

Bernd and List,

I wasn't going to comment on this, but, just returned from the inaugural.

It was cold. And it was breathtaking being part of this mass of
humanity.

My day job is managing the careers of musicians---primarily black jazz
musicians, two of whom performed at an inaugural event last night. And
what has struck me so profoundly in Washington the last few days is how
total strangers, regardless of race, creed or color---are so unusually
friendly with one another.

Darryl

- And, of course, a complete listing of every one of the 45+ shows, with
locations, dates, contact info. As there are a couple of new,
independent, local shows opening this year, we actually have THE most
complete show listing of any of the guides

We will also be adding a Special Events page with details about Michael's
auction, the Birthday Bash, etc.

This website is intended as a service to the community. I hope you enjoy
it and find it useful:

A SPECIAL OFFER TO LIST MEMBERS

To mark the launch of the new site, I am making a one-time special offer
to Meteorite List members. I am offering a very limited number of FREE
featured vendor listings to list members who will be exhibitors at the
'09 gem show, with a photo, details about your showroom and business, and
a link to your website. If you would like your site to be considered,
please email me OFF-LIST for details.

Here are the current featured listings:

http://tucsongemandmineralshows.net/tucson-show-vendors.htm

In addition,we will consider link exchanges with any List member sites
(non Tucson vendors) from our links page. I fully expect
www.tucsongemandmineralshows.net to become one of the top online gem show
resources, so this is a great PR opportunity for your site or business.
Please contact me off- List for details.

Finally, the Tenth Annual Meteor Mayhem Birthday Bash and Harvey Awards
will take place on Friday, February 6 at a very chic, new downtown Tucson
venue. I will post details separately.

Looking forward to seeing many of you here, very soon! Brings shorts and
sunglasses : )

[meteorite-list] Quasi-meteo-political spice and assorted artificial flavorings

2009-01-20 Thread Michael Gilmer
I have to agree with the growing chorus of - NO MORE POLITICS PLEASE!

TAKE THE POLITICS AND MY WIFE, PLEASE!

I quietly hoped this ongoing Obama-Bush debate would quietly fade as
common sense and decorum would eventually rule the day. But it seems
to have a life of it's own. So, in the interest of introducing
some meteorite-related brevity into this political firestorm, allow
me to indulge a flight of meteoritical fancy...

American politics is not unlike Northwest Africa meteorites -

A new president is like a fresh meteorite - they both arrive with a lot
of fanfare that usually includes a bright light, some noise, and both
make quite an impact at first. Then the forces of nature and fate
exert their inexorable influence on the new rockstar. The travails of
congress, the media, and public opinion assail the president like
the forces of weathering on a meteorite. After a few years, the
fresh face is worn and cracked and the interior starts to rust. And
finally, after much study, the new specimen is just another obscure
entry in an encyclopedia that most people will never readunless
the fall is a spectacular one, in which case people will chatter
about it endlessly on the list.

Or one could compare politicians to tektites - nobody is really sure
what they are, but everyone has an opinion on them. And, it's
possible that both may come from volcanoes on the moon, since neither
seem to be of this Earth.

Now, before I compare politicans to trinitite, I will sign off ;)

Regards and clear skies,

MikeG

2009-01-20 Thread GREG LINDH

G'Day to you too John,

I understand what you're saying. I'd rather stay quiet, believe me. It's
much easier than taking the harpoons from the haters. The problem is, if no
one confronts this type of hypocritical nonsense then the List just becomes
a bullying pulpit to be used by the ignorant haters.
So, I speak out against this nonsense. Except for a few exceptions, I
gave up with making friends on the List a long time ago. It's just not that
important. Taking an honorable stand is more important than being in with
the in crowd.
  Does that make sense?

G'Day Greg and List,
I quote you I keep reading about how this list is supposed to be just all
about meteorites, then someone like you prints something hateful and
strictly political and almost no one says a word.

This is the reason why many don't reply. It only takes one to correspond to
start the ball rolling and at last count, I've received 32 comments on this
particular issue. If you hadn't have responded, it would have just drifted
off. Nothing against you, just stating some facts.

Cheers
John

What a wonderful and spontaneous report, Darryl, thank you!

I've been watching the ceremony only on TV, but I received a similar
 impression - moving.

Of course reality will set back in - but this experience is real too.

Perhaps the series of observed fireballs during the last days and nights
only happened to arrange a nice firework to honor the 44th President of
 the
 USA ;-)

 So just keep on smiling.

 My best,

 Bernd and List,

I wasn't going to comment on this, but, just returned from the inaugural.

It was cold. And it was breathtaking being part of this mass of
 humanity.

My day job is managing the careers of musicians---primarily black jazz
musicians, two of whom performed at an inaugural event last night. And
what has struck me so profoundly in Washington the last few days is how
total strangers, regardless of race, creed or color---are so unusually
friendly with one another.

 Darryl

I have never seen anyone pro-bush, pro-guns or anything right of center ever
start a political post on this list. It's always the other side who bring
up political issues - bush be gone sales etc.

And when we get sick of it and mention that it's inappropriate, we get
called nasty names etc. The fact is the Unites States is pretty much
divided evenly and dealers who spout off their political views only hurt
their business. But I doubt any of that will ever change... I don't know
maybe I'll start threads which relate my personal political viewpoints. I
must have earned years of freebies by not attacking and smearing new members
with stupid questions, and keeping quiet about violations of list policy.
Just kidding, I would be ashamed to do that on a non-political forum.

I pray for Obama and hope he does well. After all if he does mess up, it's
not him who will suffer the consequences. And if he does mess up and
escalates the war like Johnson, I promise I won't call him a NAZI or war
