[meteorite-list] Another Fireball ?

2009-01-24 Thread Robert Woolard
List,

Not much info in this short posting, but here is a report of yet another
fireball over the U.S.

FIREBALL SIGHTING: Observers in Massachusetts and Rhode Island are reporting
a huge, pulsating blue-green fireball sighted within minutes of 8:48 pm EST
on Jan. 23rd. It was bright enough to be seen through heavy cloud cover,
according to one witness.

  Best,
  Robert Woolard

[meteorite-list] A “Little” Perspective For Ya…

2009-01-24 Thread Eric Wichman

Hi guys, and gals... ;)

You ever wonder how big the universe really is?

All you scientists and people out there who already know should check it
out too.

Pretty cool...

2009-01-24 Thread Charles Viau
Yes, that is very cool.

Taking this a bit further, quantum theory as of late is leaning towards an
infinite number of universes or membranes as they are being called.
Also, the new project at CERN may prove that there are more dimensions than
the 3 we can see.

Lots of meteoroids out there

The world is the way it is, because if it wasn't, you would not be here to
observe it

[meteorite-list] *** AD *** Many Top-Notch Specimens (and books) For Offer

2009-01-24 Thread Mal Bishop

Folks,

*** Sorry if this email made it to the list once
already, but I wasn't sure if my 1st attempt to send this email got
through or not ***

Many of you who have been on this list for a long time know that I
very rarely have a sale. Since my interest in meteorites is being
slowly, but surely, over-shadowed by other and much more important
matters I've decided to sell of part of my collection.

I need to liquidate a good portion of my collection -- so I'm
offering the following specimens and books all priced to go hopefully
very quickly.
I'm not interested in making a profit off of anything listed; in
fact, I'm offering EVERYTHING for substantially less than what
I paid for them. All specimens are of the highest quality and I'm
most certain everyone who collects
meteorites would agree with my statement upon examining them. I
purchased all of my specimens
from the top name dealers in our hobby. A majority of these
meteorites come with a beautiful COA that one dealer in
particular prides himself on and I will attest these COAs are almost
as impressive as the specimen itself! I pride myself on
how I care for my collection over the years and all specimens have
been kept in display cases with desiccant dehumidifiers
and VCI (Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor) corrosion inhibitors. I have
photos of many of these specimens taken by one well known
dealer ( when I purchased them from him ) who is highly praised for
his photography among many other things. I will email
his photo ( plus if anyone wants a current photo of the specimen I've
taken ) of any specimen anyone may be interested in.
As per custom, I will of course supply the accompanying dealer ID
card with each specimen, and if anyone wishes, a copy of the
invoice showing what I paid for any given piece to further evidence
how I've priced to quickly sell.

As far as the books go, they are all either in mint condition to very
good, and also priced to go fast! I even have a couple of catalogs, one from
1992 and the other from 1997, published by the modern-era king of
meteorites himself, Bob Haag ( I say this to differentiate Bob from
the all time king, Harvey

Nininger). If Harvey was the Father of American Meteoritics,

then certainly Bob is the son! I even have a collector's limited
edition catalog from
the notorious Michael Casper published in 2000. The catalog has a
published price of $25, of course that stays in step with Michael's somewhat
inflated ego as most would agree. This compared to the very humble
and unassuming Bob whose catalogs had no price published on them, but
did have a
price listed in his literature of the time of something like $12 if
memory serves. Anyway, the Casper catalog is mint while Bob's are
very good as far
as covers are concerned showing some minor wear with age, but the
interiors are in emaculate condition. I even have a couple of Bob's
price lists from the day
(pre-Internet when people actually sent such things via postal
service :-) ). The price on these catalogs and price lists are
somewhat negotiable, but due to their

rarity and condition, I'm not letting them go for free.

Following is a partial list of what I'm offering:

METEORITES:

Ghubara, full slice, 374.4g

Belle Plaine, full slice, 378.4g -- from Monnig collection

Sikhote-Alin, individual, 1,844g

Campo del Cielo (silicated), full slice, 45.0g

Campo del Cielo, etched full slice, 390g

Seymchan (siderite), full slice, 230.7g

Canyon Diablo, individual, 2,713g

Dimmitt, full slice, 38.0g -- from Monnig Collection

Brenham, part slice, 175.5g

Sayh al Uhaymir 001 (SAU 001), oriented individual, 362.2g

-- plus 10 or so other specimens

BOOKS:

Disturbing The Solar System -- Alan E. Rubin

Meteorites and Their Parent Planets -- Harry Y. McSween, Jr.

The Robert Haag Collection of Meteorites (Private Collection Edition)

Rocks from Space (2nd edition) -- O. Richard Norton

-- plus 6 or more titles

Like I said, this is only a partial list of meteorites and books I'm
willing to sell.
If anyone is interested, email for photos, prices, details, etc. I'm
willing to haggle a little over price,
but not much for I'm already willing to let MOST everything go for
less than what I paid by a fare margin!

I'll get back to any inquires as soon as I can, but I'll be tied up
doing some other things besides sitting at the

computer all weekend, so just please bare with me.

Thanks for your time and interest -
Mal

[meteorite-list] AD : Brenham, Trinitite, and NWA 4925 Mars Riker Displays

2009-01-24 Thread Michael Gilmer
Hi Listees!

In the spirit of the good deals we always see in the lead-up to
Tucson, I am going to offer a few one-off deals to the list. These
are specimens from my personal stash that I have upgraded, or they
are items from my trade/sale inventory that have been laying around
a little long. The asking prices include shipping to anywhere in
the CONUS. Canadian and Overseas shipping will be $5 extra. PayPal
preferred, and PayPal only for overseas.

Each of these 3 specimens comes in a mini-Riker box (the hard to
find 2x3 size) and comes with a metal label from Meteoritelabels.com

#1 - 4.3 gram Brenham mini-slice with transparent olivine windows. This piece
has a small amount of fixative (glue?) in one discreet spot
to hold one of the non-transparent olivines in place. Otherwise, it's
a very attractive specimen. Asking $20

#2 - 2.4 gram Trinitite specimen with a natural hole. Asking $20

#3 - NWA 4925 Shergottite Mars Rock micromount, 7mg. Asking $27

Take all 3 for $60 shipped in the CONUS, $65 Overseas/Canada.

If you are new to the Tucson show, or have been but not the B-Bash, you need to
go.

The Birthday Bash is by far the most important event at the show and should be
attended by all means, methods, or contrived cover stories. Its a good time,
and the biggest meteorite social event in the world. As a bonus, its a
birthday bash where its forbidden to bring a present. :0)

Re: [meteorite-list] Article about Nininger in MAPS

2009-01-24 Thread Mike Jensen
Hi All
Here is an abstract of a very interesting article from the latest
(October) issue of MAPS. I can send the whole article as a PDF if
anyone is interested.

Harvey Nininger's 1948 attempt to nationalize Meteor Crater

Howard PLOTKIN1* and Roy S. CLARKE Jr.2
1Department of Philosophy, University of Western Ontario, London,
Ontario N6A 3K7, Canada
2Department of Mineral Sciences, National Museum of Natural History,
Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C. 20560–0119, USA
*Corresponding author. E-mail: hplot...@rogers.com
(Received 14 November 2007; revision accepted 23 May 2008)

Abstract–Harvey Nininger successfully petitioned the American
Astronomical Society to pass a
motion in support of nationalizing Meteor Crater, Arizona, at its June
1948 meeting. He alleged that
the Barringer family, who held title to the crater, was depriving
American citizens of its scenic beauty
and scientific value. He then reportedly went on to make the
unauthorized—and false—claim that the
family would be receptive to a fair purchase offer for the crater. The
Barringers, who had not been
given advance warning of the petition and were not present at the
meeting, felt ambushed. They
quickly and forcefully rebutted Nininger's allegations, made it clear
they had no intention of
relinquishing their title to the crater, and terminated his exploration rights.
What led Nininger to such a curious and self-defeating act? Based on
our reading of his
voluminous personal correspondence, we conclude that it was rooted
primarily in his complex
relationship with Frederick Leonard and Lincoln LaPaz, and his desire
to establish a national institute
for meteoritical research—with them, originally, but after a serious
falling out, on his own. Prevented
from moving his American Meteorite Museum to the crater rim, Nininger
wondered what would
happen if the crater was nationalized and made into a public park,
with an accompanying tourist
center and museum. With characteristic élan, [I had to look it up 1.
Enthusiastic vigor and liveliness.
   2. Distinctive style or flair.] he could picture himself at its
head, with a secure salary
and adequate space to exhibit his meteorite collection.

Here are all the other articles in the issue as well;

[meteorite-list] Typical Eyewitness Accounts From Meteor Observers

2009-01-24 Thread Robert Woolard
All,

For those interested, here is a bit more on yesterday's New Eng. fireball.
And, in regard, to the last person's comments below, I'm sure we all hope that
no one was hurt by this thing ;-)

Summary: On Jan. 23, 2009, at approximately 8:48 pm EST a meteoroid of unknown
size hit Earth's atmosphere over New England. Its blue-green disintegration was
widely observed by motorists on the Massachusetts Turnpike and in neighboring
states.

Eyewitness Accounts:

Location: near Auburn Massachusetts
Comments: James Vasalofsky: I saw the fireball on 1/23/09 around 8:48pm. It
was blue-ish green when it first appeared, then it was a bright light that
lasted about 2 seconds. I was on the Mass Pike heading East near Auburn and it
was off to the right in the direction of the South. It was an amazing sight!
I've seen meteor showers before but this seemed really close. I assume it was a
meteor.

Location: Foxboro, Massachusetts
Comments: Robert Russell: I was driving home with my family at about 9pm on
Friday, Jan 23rd, and we saw what looked to be a huge fireball coming straight
down from the black sky. All four of us saw the same thing and were all
shocked. It was much bigger than a typical shooting star and was certainly
going straight down as opposed to shooting horizontally across the sky. It had
blue and green colors in it too. It appeared to have landed or struck down just
north of Rt 495 and just east of Rt 95 somewhere in Foxboro or Mansfield.

Location: Lexington, Massachusetts
Comments: Mark A. Abel: On January 23 at 8:48PM EST I was traveling on I-95
South bound in the Lexington area near the Hanscom Airfield when I saw the
bluish-green fireball out of the corner of my eye. At first I thought I may had
caught a glimpse of an airplane landing flood light since I was in the Hanscom
Airfield area but then it emerged from behind the low level clouds again and I
could see that it indeed was a brilliant fireball.

Location: Wakefield, Rhode Island
Comments: Donna Randy Swanson: We observed a huge pulsing blue green
fireball through the clouds tonight @ 8:48 PM dropping past the horizon, due NE
into the Atlantic ocean towards Cape Cod. Bright enough to be seen through
heavy cloud cover!

Location: Agawam, Mass.
Comments: John B Byerly: At 8:50 pm from Agawam Massachusetts looking easterly
I saw a blue green fire ball through a pretty thick cloud cover. It lasted
maybe a second with a significant tail. I am a total amateur but It looks
similar to the video that was posted a couple of days ago.

Location: North Windham, Connecticut
Comments: Paulette Harwood: My husband and I observed the fireball while
heading southeast on Rt. 6 in North Windham, CT. It was quite large and had a
green glow.

Location: MassPike between exits 11 and 11A
Comments: E. Szymczak: I was driving east on the MassPike and at a few minutes
before 9 between exits 11 and 11A and saw a huge green fireball that appeared
to come from the north fairly close to the horizon. It was spectacular!

Location: Warwick, Rhode Island
Comments: Joe Malachowski: My son and I saw the fireball at 8:48pm on 1.23.09
in Warwick, Rhode Island. It was blue-green and lasted approximately 3 seconds
- ended without a flash. This was the brightest meteor I've seen in my 46
years, brighter even than the one I saw at the Grand Canyon 2 years ago.

Location: Little Compton, Rhode Island
Comments: Anthony Russi: I was sitting in my den and through my window I saw a
dazzling fireball drop from the night sky. I live in little Compton, Rhode
Island on the Sakonnet River, the object was east of me. It came straight down
and looked like huge flare. Sometime around 8:30.

Location: Connecticut
Comments: Briana: At approx. 8:45pm, our family was driving north on route 395
between route 97 169 in CT. My husband said, 'Look, Look, Look!!' And there,
straight ahead, was a very bright object heading for the ground. For me it was
gone quickly, but my husband said he saw it above the clouds, then it
disappeared for a moment behind some clouds, then he saw it again below the
clouds. Because of this we both think it had to have hit the ground. Most
likely someplace in NE CT, possibly between Danielson and Thompson. It was very
cool, but I hope no one was hurt.

WHAT IS THE TKW. THAT'S ALL WE NEED.
how many time you can hide your stones one month two month , sex month,
time will tell, you will sell them and you will show them what ever it
takes , and i m right and i will be always right;

you can't hide the tkw for 1000's collector ,
i have nothing to do any more with all this ,
i have other thing to do.

[meteorite-list] Meteorite Article on CloudyNights.com

2009-01-24 Thread Michael Gilmer
Hi folks!

I wrote an article about collecting meteorites for the Cloudy Nights
astronomy website. It's geared towards beginners with little
knowledge about collecting. :)

You can read the article at the following link -

http://www.cloudynights.com/item.php?item_id=1929

And the article is being discussed in the forum here -

Clear skies!
