Hi, I'm working in Shanghai (with the added benefit of being perfectly located for the upcoming total solar eclipse) and have paid scant attention to the list the last couple of weeks. Two threads woven together Mike, I believe Mark's advice is extremely wise on all counts. Separately, but not altogether, re the subject of of the "best" meteorite hunter---If I've said it once I've said it a thousand times: if we're talking about who has inherited Bob Haag's mantle...if we're talking about who has kicked the temperature of meteorite awareness up several notches, I'm confident history will reveal we are living in the Mike Farmer Era. While Mike may not possess the most unparalleled meteorite hunting skill set (the same could be said of Bob) his recent finds, recoveries, tenacity and accompanying "bandwidth" have done more for the recent widespread popularization of meteorites than any other hunter--by far. I've taken the "most diplomatic" and "most circumspect" out of the equation ;-) All best to everyone / Darryl On Jul 19, 2009, at 9:39 PM, Mark Grossman wrote: Just a quick question. Re: [meteorite-list] GPS Device located on my car!
I ment to say this before but this is IMCA business as formated and this is not the list for that discussion. In fact the IMCA list is not for this discussion. There are published procedures for filing a complaint against an IMCA member even if the complainer isn't a member. Based on the rant I don't see that this likely falls under the perview of the IMCA. Oh and for one that diss'd and downed the organization you sure do come running to them alot. I am sorry for your distress, truly I am. I know too well personally what it is to have a POS anger me. All I can offer is the knowledge that you can choose to think about this in another way and it would not cause such a shock to your sensibilities. Feel some joy in knowing it wasn't a warrantless device placed on your car by a scummy FBI agent that things rules are an inconvienance. Enjoy your trip but I have to ask... " Did you pack your lugage yourself?" "Has anyone unknown to you had access to your luggage since you packed it?" Elton PS: anyone know what color Mike's Wife's airplane is? Come on Mike it has some humor to it. They wouldn't be doing this unless you were the front dog in the pack. --- On Sun, 7/19/09, Michael Farmer wrote: > From: Michael Farmer > Subject: [meteorite-list] GPS Device located on my car! > To: meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com > Date: Sunday, July 19, 2009, 12:51 PM > > I demand a full IMCA investigation. I also want to thank everyone for attending and Dolores Hill for organizing such a great event. There were so many people, and the displays and talks were great, and it was an honor to meet so many people involved in the space program. I was invited to show Lunar meteorites along with several other people, and the display was the single largest display of privately owned lunar meteorites ever seen in one place. thanks Dolores, it was lots of fun. Re: [meteorite-list] PHOTOS NEEDED - RSVP
Hi all, I am in the final all nighters stages of finishing my book on ASPECTS OF METEORITE ORITENTATION. I am very dissappointed at the relatively few regmaglypted Meteorite photos I have. I blew it and didn't get a photo of the fabulous Regmaglypted nose cone in Mike Farmer's room a few Tucson Shows Back (the owner passed on a $100K offer, just to let you know how fabulous that puppy was) And to this day I bemoan the fact I passed on a CHEAP totally regmaglypted Oriented Millbillilly my first year of collecting "because I already have a Nice Millbillilli and that one is all covered in that red mud." (!) Anyway, anyone with an oriented meteorite with regmaglypting (especially stones) your photos are desired - and of course, you Will be given full credit (and we all know a stone becomes more valuable When it is in print). Photos would IDEALLY be 6 inches at the longest point and 300dpi. If you don't know how to set the dpi, then the largest photo you can send Me the better. Focus and lighting are, of course, key issues. Please send as many photos as possible (digital photos are free), but only one per email. Any other special oriented specimens are welcome, but the regmaglypted ones I really need. The book is shaping up really nicely - but I do need a bunch of Regmeglypted oriented specimens. RSVP all. Re: [meteorite-list] What got you into meteorites?
Greg/List: How did I get into meteorites? It perhaps started way back in the ‘70’s when a good friend of mine who was a mineral enthusiast got a job at the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington DC, and I remember him telling me that diamonds (carbon) had been found in iron meteorites; Wow… I thought that was very interesting. It also was about the same time I was writing a research paper (for English class) on the theory that a large meteor crashed on earth, resulting in the extinction of the dinosaurs… very fun to write and I think I received an ‘A’. Years later after many years of fossil and mineral collecting on the east coast, I began to read about meteorites and I remember seeing “The Meteorite Man,” Mr. Bob Haag on TV and in a few publications. Later I moved to Austin, TX pursuing an engineering degree and began to do more research on how to buy meteorites - It was the early 1990’s and there were few dealers and I also was living on a limited income. I do remember looking in the TX desert and I also looked for Tektites (never found any) throughout the ‘90’s. Then in 1997, I was driving to California for a summer internship and I went to the Meteorite Crater in Arizona. It was during this drive across the country, when I stopped at a roadside stand and bought a small ~25 gram Canyon Diablo meteorite; I still have it today. The next year I bought a second Canyon Diablo, which is 225 grams. After graduating from the University of Texas, I got a job in Bakersfield and began hunting the deserts there and found my first meteorite (a 15.8 gram chondrite) in 2006. Since then I have found many more and I read about the different varieties of meteorites when ever I have free time. I have collected fossils and minerals since I was a boy, but I think meteorites are so unique and out of this world, that they have become my primary focus of my mineral collection. Everyone, Enjoy Hunting and happy 40th anniversary (July 20th) of the Apollo 11 moon landing. Re: [meteorite-list] LPL Apollo 11 Anniversary Event and Meteorite People
As an LPLer who was not involved with the planning or execution of this event, I think those who did should be congratulated for the fine celebration that was held in the LPL atrium yesterday. I know I had a great time as did the hundreds and hundreds of our guests. A special thanks to those involved in the meteorite displays. They deserve another thank you too for making the event a hit. The display of sixteen(!) different lunar meteorites was fantastic and made this event more special! (In no particular order, and sorry if I miss anyone) Mike Farmer Geoff Notkin Robert Ward Shauna Russell Greg Hupe along with their friends and assistants all deserve thanks. While it was about the Apollo 11 anniversary, the end of the atrium holding the meteorites was nearly always packed with people, especially children. Geoff was giving away posters and to a limited number of early arrivers, actual meteorites. I wonder how many new collectors the efforts of all the participants generated yesterday? I'm sure quiet a few! You all deserve thanks. I saw but didn't get a chance to say hello to Jack Schrader, Rubin Garcia and Marvin Kilgore. Again, sorry if I missed anyone else who was there. Finally a special thanks goes to Dolores Hill. She is sometimes too humble and will never stand up and take a bow, but she certainly deserves some public praise. She tirelessly explained everything meteorite to the kids, both little and big. One couldn't help but notice all of the young girls at her table that were excited by meteorites. When we left just after 8pm, Dolores was still going string, even though she had been up and going full speed since 6am on nothing more than a bagel and water. She is a jewel in the field of meteoritics; One that all too often goes under appreciated. This field is lucky to have her. -- Richard Kowalski __ http://www.meteoritecentral.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite hunting ethics
Hi All, Joe writes: > There is nothing "illegal" about the way Carl found it... I didn't say there was. My post was more about ethics and hypothetical situations. > Just cuz somebody makes the first find, no matter who it is > does not own the strewnfield, not by any means, unless it > is on his property. Irrelevant to the discussion. Did I ever say anywhere in my post that Jack has exclusive rights to his discovery location? No. > ...just cuz it is in AZ they feel the need to sccop it all > up for themselves, thats not right... Jack has never said anything of the sort; and Mike has already pointed out that if you found the fall location *independently*, then you would have just as much right to be there as they do (assuming it didn't violate existing arrangements with any property owners). > I see it as selfish... I see it as SMART. Frankly, I would rather have scientifically- minded people helping to recover a new fall because they actually care about science, not because of fame or profit. > Who is to say Carl will not get GPS coordinance and in situ > photo? If he finds anything, perhaps he will. Indeed, I hope he would. > After the way Jack, Mike and the other acted, I would > not give them any info on my finds, they are not doing the > same for anyone else. If this is really how you feel, I can't say I'd be very interested in enlisting your help to recover a new fall. For the scientists, this isn't a game. It isn't about money, or petty jealousies. It's about quality scientific data. Every meteorite that is recovered "improperly" is a lost data point. If I was in Jack's shoes (which to some degree, I am) I would feel no obligation whatsoever to share my hard-earned results with anyone until I was damned good and ready. > This fall just shows the true colors of some of the hunters. Quite so. > Like you said, when Jack invited Farmer he knew there was a chance > that somebody may find the strewnfield cuz he is so high profile. > He took that chance and it happened. Maybe it happened, maybe it didn't. You only have Carl's say-so at this point. As far as I know, he doesn't have any meteorites as evidence to back up the claim. > Carl did not put a beacon on Mikes Car. Did I say he did? No. My hyperbole was meant to show how various levels of "cheating" were different only in magnitude, not flavor. They're all unethical to varying degrees. To summarize: 1. You don't have a right to know what Jack figured out. 2. Jack doesn't have a right to prevent you from figuring out what he did -- by your own scientific means. 3. If you aren't yet clever enough to do #2, then educate yourself so that you can. It's really not rocket science. --Rob __ http://www.meteoritecentral.com Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
