Re: [meteorite-list] More eBay cancelled auctions

2009-08-30 Thread Mr EMan
To mention once again: I am fairly sure it is against eBay terms of service to
sell an item outside of eBay once listed for the duration of the auction and
for an additional 90 days(?)there after. So delisting an item to sell it to
someone else outside the ebay system for whatever reason is a violation of a
seller's agreement with eBay.

Delisting an item because it isn't drawing a high bid is a specific violation
as the listing was structured to avoid paying reserve auction fees if no
reserve price was imposed.

 item was broken or lost)

[meteorite-list] - Calif Fireball 7-8pm local Aug 28

2009-08-30 Thread Linton Rohr

Ahoy there list!
Has anybody heard anything further on this one? I've been a bit behind on my
list duties and just read about this.
I live very close to both Simi Valley and Thousand Oaks (NW of L.A.), but
missed seeing this fireball. The inclusion of Stockton seems odd, as it is
roughly 300 miles north of here (E of S.F.Bay). I'll have to inquire with
all my local contacts to see if anyone saw anything. I'd love to get out in
this 110 degree weather, with the Glendale fire smoke drifting around, and
start hunting a fresh fall. No joke...I really would! 8^)

I have an apparent major fireball sighting Simi Valley/ Thousand
Oaks/Stockton

Just a heads up.
Elton

The ball of light was white and large and had a very long trail of smoke. It
was in the Simi Valley/Thousand Oaks area. Anyone else see it or know what
it is?

I saw the ball of light from Stockton. It was in the Southern sky right
below the moon. It was a large ball of light and had smoke trailing. It fell
straight down then wobbled down even further, seemed like a couple of
seconds. I'm sure of the exact time but it was somewhere in the range of 7-8
p.m. I thought it was a plane crash but obviously after not hearing any news
I figured it was something else. Wish I had my camera pointed that way, it
was definitely an amazing sight!

Re: [meteorite-list] More eBay cancelled auctions

2009-08-30 Thread Darren Garrison
I had an issue similar to this recently-- I was looking for a specific computer
related book. The book was in it's 4th edition, with 2nd, 3rd, and 4th edition
copies all on Ebay with varying prices. Someone had a 3rd edition copy on
auction with a 99 cent opening price, but they had a feedback rating of only 3.
But figuring everybody had to start some time, I made a bid.

The auction continued a few days after my bid (so I wasn't sniping) and nobody
else bid at all. The auction closed for 99 cents plus shipping. I paypaled the
amount as soon as the auction ended. Within a hour, I get a refund from Paypal,
with a message from the seller that she had sold it to someone else off-line.
Now, obviously, she had simply not liked the closing price and wanted a do over.
If it had been a seriously high-priced item that went for 99 cents, I would
probably have let someone off the hook just to be fair. But 99 cents for a used
copy of a previous edition of a computer manual is not an unreasonable price,
even if it did cost $60 when it was new a few years back. Dishonest tactics
over unrealistic expectations on prices for a used item deserve a negative
feedback, and got a negative feedback with an explanation why (best as could be
done in the 80 character limit.)

I then used buy-it-now to pick up a 2nd edition copy of the book for $2.05 with
no hassles.

Re: [meteorite-list] Alien Contact Predicted

2009-08-30 Thread Steve Schoner
Phil,

Right pure brain power in the 5th century B.C. Had the Greeks not fallen to
the forces of that day, and progressed, I think Mankind would have gone to the
moon a thousand years ago. Our species had to have a few hard knocks before
we here in America did it.

Brain power though, look at Einstein? In his early 20's without any scientific
equipment at his disposal he tied together the observations of those that did
and came up with the theories of Relativity, and also electromagnetism.

Studying his life-- It just blows me away, and demonstrates the power of the
human intellect.

But the subject at hand... I cannot accept that this Universe in all its
vastness has only us here on earth as the only intelligent species.
Considering what certain meteorites reveal regarding the universal
proliferation of biologic prerequisite compounds, we being the only ones would
be nothing less than miraculous. Then again, alien beings might very well be
aware of us, and might just eradicate us as a universal nuisance.

Did not Steven Hawking give a warning about our desire to contact alien beings?
He pointed out that our own history shows what happens when an advanced
civilization meets one less advanced. In this regard, how many of you
remember that old Twilight Zone episode To Serve Man-- Could very well be the
truth.

I f you have not seen To Serve Man, it can be viewed on the Internet.

Darren,

Yes they were fools. See my reference to Democritus and Diogenes. These men
and the other Greek Classical Philosophers, weren't fools. (With the
possible exception of Aristotle.) They pretty much laid the groundwork for
everything we know today, and they did it in the 5th Century BC. And they
didn't need no stinking mass spectrometer to do it either. It was pure
brain power. Btw, your arguments are starting to deteriorate into personal
attacks. Funny, but still personal. I expected more from you.

Re: [meteorite-list] WAS Astronomy Art Spacifieds Meteorite Contest Update, RAPIDLY BECOMING SPAM

2009-08-30 Thread Dave Gheesling
Eric/All,

First, it was a duplicate post.

Second, I have to agree with Bob, et al, as these are ADS which are quickly
becoming spam if not marked as such. The notion that advertising is free
to those listing items is somewhat misleading, as the goal is clearly to
drive traffic so you can sell, well, ADS. Nothing wrong with this
whatsoever, Eric, but it is what it is so let's call a spade a spade.

Third, I really do appreciate your enthusiasm for the field and your
entrepreneurship when it comes to trying new things (and really do wish you
the best of luck with this advertising site), but I only listed a couple of
excess items there to help drive initial traffic (eBay truly is a mess, so
anything is worth a try) and don't want any free stuff in return. Should
one of my postings win some sort of freebie, please take it to a local
school's science class, share some of your meteoric enthusiasm with them and
leave it behind as a gift...a wonderful opportunity to make an important
donation and become a philanthropist ;-)

Thanks much, and all best,

Dave

[meteorite-list] Could Dogs be trained to recover meteorites?

2009-08-30 Thread wahlperry

Hi List,

I wonder what triggered Hopper to pick up and move the freshly fallen
Ash Creek meteorite. Was it the sound of the meteorites falling to the
ground or was it the strange smell that the meteorite produced? Could a
dog be trained to aid in recovering meteorites from a fresh fall? What
the heck, anything is possible. I decided to give it a try with my own
dog. My dog is a 16 month old German Shepherd that is worked on the
average of 45 minutes a day in some aspects of his training. The
majority of his training is obedience and some scent tracking etc. Once
Brix has the scent of the object you can hide it or throw it and he
usually finds the object within minutes.

The true test would be to arrive on a fresh fall and put his nose to
the test (like that's going to happen). The next best thing to use
would be meteorites from a fresh fall. The only problem would be the
scent from everyone that has held the meteorites. I know what you are
thinking, take a couple of Ash Creek meteorites and wash them off with
a little detergent and water and place them in the yard. I decided to
just wipe the meteorites off and place them in the yard. This sounded
like the next best thing to a fresh strewn field. The only problem was
that the neighbors cat decided to run across the strewn field at the
time of the test.
Brix (having all of his training in obedience) decided to chase the cat
. Once I finally caught Brix and he was over the excitement of chasing
the cat I could retry this theory. The second test went ok, Brix was
able to find the meteorites with little difficulty.

You have to wonder if Brix was still picking up my scent on the
meteorites or my scent walking through the yard. I will keep you posted
on the results.

P.S. Anyone looking to purchase some slightly used meteorites? Just
kidding!

2009-08-30 Thread star_wars_collector
I think that this has been a interesting topic.
Its my thoughts, as I said before that any intelligent life we encounter will
actually come to us.
I do think that they would be far more advanced and most likely be
machine/robot that would actually visit us rather then the actual beings that
created them.
If they have the ability to create advanced AI and travel space at the speed
(as we know it)it would take to reach us, surely we would be far behind them
and comperable to the gap between humans and apes.
With that in mind, would they really bother to make contact with such a self
destructive species like us?
Would they even see us as a lifeform worth contacting?
Would we remind them of how they were many many years past in their history?
Would they have concern over what impact they would have on us and our religous
system?
Would we be not much more then a nice mold patch on a college kids 3 week old
pizza science experiment?

cheap copies of Life As We Do Not Know It available-- I would strongly
reccommend this book for anyone interested in current scientific ideas on life,
what it is, and where it might be found.

[meteorite-list] looking to buy

2009-08-30 Thread Mike Hankey
Hello All,

I'm looking to buy some more meteorites. This is what I want:

1) A really cool looking unique golf ball sized(not shaped) rock in
good condition no more than $1,000.

2) 1-2kg of cheap NWA meteorites. I will be giving these away as gifts
to the local farmers and children that are helping search for the
Lancaster meteorites. I want volume and low price.

Question: Are 'meteorite crystals' like the listing below really
meteorites? or are they from the sand / ground near a big crater?

http://cgi.ebay.com/1-kg-NEW-CAMPO-DEL-CIELO-METEORITE-CRYSTALS-2-2-pounds_W0QQitemZ120367220535QQcategoryZ3239QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp3907.m263QQ_trkparmsZalgo%3DSIC%26itu%3DUCI%252BIA%252BUA%252BFICS%252BUFI%252BDDSIC%26otn%3D12%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D54

3) 1-3 Pallasite slices and/or iron-nickle slices

If you are interested please reply with pics prices off list.

for deliver the post. In that period the internal post and the foreing mail
were very very slow...and many package went lost! At now seems all works
better... But, as Matteo tell you, at know the Customs are the very big
problem. Could happens that the post stops at the customs for more than
2-3weeks and you have to pay more than 25% of fees. Every times I ask to the
dealers to indicate on the package something like Rocks sample for study
without value and indicate as value 0$ or something just a little more
expensive than the shipping cost...10$ or 15$. At now I have had problem
just one time, the package was sent back to the dealer. But I never lost
anything. The Deutsche Post had lost 1.2g of Mars that I have sold to a

Re: [meteorite-list] Shipping to Italy Question

2009-08-30 Thread Pekka Savolainen

In all EU-countries you have to pay VAT, if the value of the shipment
outside EU is higher than the limit, in Finland some EUR 45.00 =
USD 64.00, and that means, the customs stops the shipment and you
have to clear it.

Given that EU law only requires that the standard VAT rate must be
at least 15% (in Finland 22%).

Usually Rocks sample for study without value works ok, and you
should not have troubles with customs in EU.

Subject: [meteorite-list] Could Dogs be trained to recover meteorites?

Just
kidding!

Sonny

Hm. Maybe some meteorites are actually alien civilizations attempting to
communicate with what they figure is the dominant form of life on the planet--
after all, these dogs have slaves to feed them, to care for them, to cater to
their every need...

I'm sure they are still worrying about retrubution for The Nakhla Incedent.

Re: [meteorite-list] More eBay cancelled auctions

2009-08-30 Thread Steve Schoner
I had a similar problem, or the seller had the problem as I was in the hospital
and could not bid. It was for a special type of thin rock saw... very
expensive items when new and costly when used. I wanted to bid on it as it
was listed for .99cts. Then the day before the auction was to end, there were
no bidders. I wanted that machine badly. Then with a potentially deadly
episode with my heart, to the hospital I went for 3 days.

I missed the auction completely and no one had bid on it. .99cts. I could
not believed that it had passed with no bids. And the seller had not
re-listed it either. I e-mailed the seller my story, saying that I would have
bid on it and maybe gotten it for .99cts. (Robbery on my part really). So I
wrote would he be willing to take an offer on it out of auction. The owner
was gone for a few days, and when he returned, I got an email stating? MAKE US
AN OFFER.

I did. $50 plus shipping and handling. (Still a steal, expecting a counter
offer)

Instead, the seller accepted, and the deal was done.

I think that maybe in cases where a really valuable item is snagged for a real
low price, it might be honorable to make an offer that would reasonable to
avoid the auction being canceled, due to seller regrets.

But then again, I have sold things on ebay and taken it in the shorts so to
speak, and that is the way it is. I never short an auction that I put up no
matter what the closing price is.

related book.

Within a hour, I get a refund from Paypal,
with a message from the seller that she had sold it to someone else
off-line.

I then used buy-it-now to pick up a 2nd edition copy of the book for $2.05 with
no hassles.

[meteorite-list] Wind Scorpion Meteorite Hunter

2009-08-30 Thread Adam Hupe
I found this Wind Scorpion on my back porch, actually he found me. He was
chasing me around for a bit but I managed to capture him. I was trying to take
some closeup pictures of him (Bandito)on a pile of Bensours when he picked out
one to his liking. Actually he tried to abscond with the smallest one but began
to protect the entire pile.

Sonny was talking about meteorite hunting dogs but this Wind Scorpion is
already trained as can be seen in the images below:

NICE!

Guess humans aren't the only ones who love meteorites.

2009-08-30 Thread GREG LINDH

Hi Adam,

I liked your post.funny. I live in Prescott Valley, AZ, so I've seen
Wind Scorpions here also. I laughed when I pictured you trying to out run the
little creature. I laughed because I've done the same thing, and I'll tell you
what, they are one fast bug. If we humans could run as fast, taking into
account the size of our bodies, we wouldn't need airplanes to go from coast to
coast.
Thanks for the photos and the story.

[meteorite-list] The Big Question

2009-08-30 Thread Pete Shugar

Maybe this has been covered before, or maybe not.
Please define and describe what slickensides are/is.
How can you recognize them? Are they common,
or is this a rare thing.
Help me understand it, please.
