Count, If you guys had a deal to split it before you started hunting, that that's a deal. When I was hunting in WI some of the groups I hunted with made that same deal. I know one of sonny's finds is being cut so he can split it with 3 others who were hunting with him. Sometimes that is the deal, sometimes it is not. It is not customary, but it is a deal that is made many times while hunting. If it is the deal you should honor it. If not, I don't know what to say. I just hope it gets taken care of and both are happy. I would be happy with half of a 25lb find, even if I found it. Re: [meteorite-list] MY REGRETS AND APOLOGY
Hi List, I will try to make this short and sweet. In Wisconsin we all know the true story. Myself and Marc Fries both responded to the list about what happened. Bill Kies has since sent me an apology off list. West Texas, who knows what he is talking about. Georgia -get over it. I was contacted by an older gentleman regarding meteorite hunting. It took awhile for me to gain trust in him and then I took him under my wing and began to teach him about meteorite hunting. I gave this individual numerous meteorites including some sentimental ones that were found by Jim Kriegh and myself. I gave him these to start his collection. I invited this gentleman into my home and trusted him like a father. I decided to show him the ropes and how to hunt. I took him out for a few hours one day and we did not find anything. On another occasion I decided to take him to an area that I had been working for the past 8 years. This was a cold find area and I am working closely with a University in classifying and mapping out this unique fall area. On this particular day this man found a nice meteorite. This meteorite was found less than 50 feet from where I left this individual in the strewnfield. Granted, I had told him to go out to this valley before but not to this exact location that I was working on. If you read the story in Meteorite Times and the posts to the List from the finder you will get an idea of how it went that day with the exception of an exaggerated distance that he walked. It was a cool find and I was happy for him. As far as cutting the meteorite, please read the Meteorite Times story again and you will understand what happened. I reminded this individual on several occasions that this area needed to be kept confidential to preserve the work that I have completed and am submitting to the University. I reminded him that I had been spent 8 years working the area to get it to this point and the finds have become few and far between. I asked him to keep this area confidential and he assured me he would. A short time later I received a phone call from a friend saying this individual had invited them to hunt his new strewnfield. They declined the offer knowing the true story behind the find. When I returned from my first Wisconsin hunt I decided to call this individual. I was excited to share the hunting story and tell him about the trip and Brix's find. He had just sent a couple of nice posts to the List congratulating Brix and myself about the find. You would think that if he was angry with me about the meteorite he would have NOT sent these posts as recently as APRIL. During our conversation he informed me that he had taken 6 to 8 people out to my strewnfield meteorite hunting while I was away. I was extremely upset about his decision to expose my area. You have to understand I spent 8 years in this area 5-10 days a month working in secrecy, quietly documenting things and staying out of sight. Now it was exposed, he had spent 2 hours in the area I had spent 8 years. His only explanation was to ask me why I wanted to keep it quiet and what I was trying to accomplish. He wanted to share the area with everyone. Any hunter who had diligently spent time in the field will understand my frustration. If he would have found the area or meteorite on his own it would have been different. I still will not publish this data for years. After becoming angry I told this individual that I will never take him hunting again. I asked him to not contact me. A few days later he decided that I tricked him into giving me half of the meteorite, threatened to sue me by email, threatened to post stories about the Georgia incident if I did not give the meteorite back to him. He also tried to extort me by email and left messages on my cell phone. I have kept all of these records. I have forwarded all of his threats to the IMCA and notified Art at the Meteorite List. This is why Robert Ward had to post this story for this man. If this gentleman had expressed an interest in having the other half of the meteorite I would have GLADLY given it to him before this incident. He even came over and took photographs of the 2 halves together. We hung out and discussed different polishing methods and whose half would look better. He never asked for the other half back. If it was truly an issue for him he would have asked for it while he was in my home with the 2 halves together. You can now understand my frustration from the betrayal, threats, and trying to ruin my hard work in this strewnfield. Remember 2 hours versus 8 years is a huge difference. As far as splitting finds goes, Rob, we know what your agreements are but why don't you state them publicly? What is your policy with your hunting partners on your rare finds in Oman and other countries? What about all of the Glorieta hunters who split their finds? Also what about the hunters who go to the Sahara? As for

Re: [meteorite-list] Photo color issue update - colored scale cubes
Hi Mike, List, Mike is right, the flash in macro photography is evil, sort of... (most macro photographers use what's called a ring flash which mounts on the end of an SLR camera lens) It all depends on how you use your camera, if it's an SLR or a Point Shoot. I don't flash at all, rather I like using a diffused full spectrum light. $20 at your local Office Depot. Oh yeah and a plain white piece of paper for the background. Simple. Everyone likes simple. As for white balancing. Your camera's built in light meter reads everything on average at 18% gray and white balances accordingly to how bright or dark the subject/background/foreground is collectively. A quick trick I use is to point the camera's focal point at the shadow created by the meteorite while pressing the shutter button halfway, thereby forcing the camera to use the gray to white balance. Wait for the beep, this means it's focused, then while still holding the button halfway I re-frame the meteorite in the center of the photo and fully depress the shutter button. Works every time... http://www.meteoritesusa.com/meteorite-photos/ Enjoy! [meteorite-list] NO REGRETS
Hello Sonny, List, As per Art's request I will not discuss the Nevada issue, but I am happy to address Sonny's request that I disclose the agreements I have in regards to the shares on my hunts. On desert hunts the finder keeps all of his common chondrites, we do split rare achondrites, lunars, carbonaceous chondrites, rumurutiites, ect. The thought of my 22.61 kilo DHO 1431 oriented nose cone having been cut in half so that my partner could get his share is unimaginable to me. Also, if one finds a broken individual and your partner finds the other piece, let's say ten feet away, that piece belongs to the original finder, and that person calls the shots on how the strewn field is hunted from that point on. All of our agreements are made before we even step foot on an airplane, this prevents any misunderstandings. As far as Glorieta Mountain is concerned, every person I have hunted with that has found meteorites kept their finds, Patrick Hermann, Robert Haag, myself, Shauna Russell, Jim Strope. I feel that if you work for it, it was meant for you. On large scale projects such as Springwater we do split equally, but this is a mining project essentially, we all have a lot of money invested, and all open ground gets covered, the 'luck of the hunt' is not such of a factor, it was simply in your grid area. Sonny, I hope this public statement answers you questions. [meteorite-list] Thanks, Michael!
Hi All, Just wanted to let everyone know that I received a VERY nice (overwhelming, really) package from Michael Cottingham in today's mail. In it were copies of four separate Dodgeville and Platteville papers containing stories about the big fall in Livingston/Mifflin -- mementos that I wish I had taken the time to chase down while I was there a few weeks ago. But the BIG surprise in the package was a very generous 4+ gram slice from Michael's latest 105.1-gram find there a little over a week ago! I don't think Michael has discussed this discovery on the list yet, so I'll leave the details of that story for him to share. But I will say that it took a bit of a leap of faith on his, Greg Hupe's, and Eric Wichman's parts to search in an area I recommended to them (based on radar), given that it was over 3 miles from the nearest prior find. (Psychologically, it is much easier to hunt with confidence when you are searching an area surrounded by other known finds.) Bottom line is that this find ended up being a significant strewn field extender, and I'm thankful to Michael, Greg and Eric for diverting valuable time they could have spent in more productive areas in an attempt to validate my interpretation of the NEXRAD data. I am quite relieved that their efforts were not in vain! Their success alone was most gratifying from a theoretical analysis standpoint; to actually be sent a slice from that find was (in the words of MasterCard) ... priceless. Hi Robert, Thanks for your informative email. I've yet to experience my first hunt, so your information helps me understand some of the intricacies of meteorite hunting rules and ediquettes. May I suggest you have a contract in writing with your partners, and the land owners in the future to prevent these recurrent problems. [meteorite-list] AD - New Collector, Rock TRADE
Hi All, I've been reading the list for a few months now and finally thought I may have something to offer (albeit somewhat self-centered). Im a new collector of meteorites, and am looking to trade mineral specimens for meteorites or related things to bolster my tiny collection. Im a geologist, and have been an avid rockhound for the last 10 years of my 25. That said, I have a literal ton of rocks and I figured that since this list deals with meteorites, I should try and offer things that are more related to space rocks than not. Im simply looking to swap some of my extra rocks for some of your extra space rocks. I know meteorites are or can be expensive, so im willing to trade what you think is fair. If you are looking for some specific mineral/rock, ask and I may have a sample or two somewhere. Email me at ryan.weidert at gmail.com if interested or have any questions. I'd be glad to answer them (if I can haha)! Thanks! Re: [meteorite-list] Massa meteorite from South Africa?
Good morning. I know a Massa. Massa was a working name of an early NWA, found in 1999. Was an extremely fresh (W0!) H5. Must have been a larger find, the Catalogue lists a tkw of 120kg. Is superior material. Good black true fusion crust. Grey to light grey matrix. Some black chondrules and has long metal veins running through, similar like El Hammami. But all in all nicer, cause most of Hammami came heftily oxidized to market. Mainly Ahmed Pani from Vienna distributed it, should still have some. (We have also a slice of a pound somewhere). http://members.chello.at/panimeteorites/ It's in the Bulletin as NWA 1172. Are you sure you bought from a specialized meteorite dealer? Three meteorites without identification - that is very uncommon. Sounds rather like it has been a normal mineral dealer, who got by accident some meteorites too and as they often aren't aware of the importance of the authenticity, respectively the provenience of a meteorite, with them, something like that happens more often. [meteorite-list] Wisconsin Find Registration UW-Madison
Hello All, To all who found meteorites, or purchased stones from the original finders of the April 14, 2010 fall in southwestern Wisconsin, I encourage everyone to register these with the University of Wisconsin - Madison. In charge of this web site is Professor John Valley. I have already sent in the information for my two finds which included; Weight, Date of Find (I included time as well), GPS coordinates and Photos (if you can not send or take stones to John). Here is a snip of John's reply to me earlier today: We have three lists of meteorites. One contains references that we find on the web or hear about second hand. The more important list contains all confirmed finds of falls from April 14. We will put your samples on the confirmed list. We also show pictures on our web site, but this is just the subset of samples that we have examined and photographed ourselves. I understand your reluctance to ship them to us. It would be very helpful to know the weights of your samples and the approx. (or exact) locations where you found them. This will help us to eventually define the distribution of the strewn field and the total mass of stones that were found. Thanks, John Valley Here is the link to the Registration Page: http://www.geology.wisc.edu/misc/meteorite-registry/ I would also encourage everyone who has not sent Richard Kowalski or Rob Matson this information to do so as well. [meteorite-list] Wisconsin meteorite trip report
Hi all, I just returned home from my 3rd trip to the WI strewnfield. The remaining fields have been planted and the corn is starting to grow. The no- till fields you can still walk but will soon have vegetation covering the ground. Many of the hay fields have been cut. The beef cattle are calving, making access tough . We were able to locate numerous witnesses to the fireball East of Highway 23. The eye witnesses were at different sides of the fireball and two directly underneath the explosions. Two miles West of this location I also talked with a land owner that saw the fireball explode overhead. The information placed the fireball on one of our direct lines and under the doppler returns. The farmers reported hearing the sound of a jet overhead followed by a suction sound as the meteorite passed overhead as the ground rumbled. The land owners granted us unlimited access to this 2 square mile area. Part of the field was freshly cut hay followed by a large no till field . We spent many hours walking this area with no luck. As with the West Texas Fall many of the meteorites that landed on the worked fields buried themselves into the soil. Many of the meteorite hunters were able to recover meteorites by placing a magnet cane into the holes in the soil. The Wisconsin strewfield has received 1-2 of rain after the fireball and possible erased any hole that a meteorite may have made. The hay fields could still have meteorites on the surface but would be pushed into the soil from the hay cutter and then from the tractor that bails the hay. While walking the cut hay fields the larger rocks were still easy to see. I would have to say along with many of the meteorite hunters still in the field, a large portion of this fall will be lost due to cultivation and the location of fall. My 3 meteorite hunting trips to Wisconsin were still a lot of fun and many new friends were made . I should have pictures and a story up soon. On one of the days hunting I found a replacement for Brix , a calf that was born hours before. The calf followed me throughout the field staggering side to side as it gained strength. It was a great opportunity to take some photos of the young calf. [meteorite-list] My Time In Wisconsin - A Thanks, Advantages of Cooperation, and Extreme Disappointments!
Hello, The Wisconsin hunt was one of my most enjoyable meteorite hunts of all time. Mainly because the majority of local residents welcomed the meteorite hunters with an enthusiastic openness. I have never seen more local people hunting for meteorites in my whole lifetime. The days following the Iowa-Grant Counties School event, I saw at least 50 people mowing their lawns in and around the school and entire families walking up and down the road looking for meteorites. I was only turned down from hunting on one property, and that was because they had just sprayed chemicals on the fields and did not want people getting sick and suing them. They also, had turkey hunters in the woods and while I was disappointed, it was their land and it made perfect sense to me. Sad though, because it was right under the line! I saw some really beautiful country, filled with lovely rivers, farms, woods and unique limestone bluffs in some areas. I saw morel mushrooms, eagles and many, many medicine plants. On Mark's farm, in his woods, I saw thousands of little violets all with their purple flowers glowing and filling the forest with sweet fragrance. I really enjoyed being with Jim Baxter when he found his very first meteorite in this lifetime, then another, and then another! fantastic! Jim is probably the winner, for the most stones, most weight, in the shortest period of time -2 days of hunting I believe. My thanks go out to the many people who allowed us to hunt their properties, to fellow meteorite hunters who shared data and obtained permission for others to hunt. People like Mike F., Terry B., Robert W., and others. To The Trelay seed people for allowing us to hunt the property around the school and in that great cluster of finds. To George Bailey, I found my 1st and 2nd meteorite on his farm. To Gola Finklemyer, where I found my 4th stone. One of the sweetest ladies you could ever hope to meet. To Eric and Greg in the second week! Great and easy going hunting partners. I like to hunt alone most of the time, but hunting with Greg Hupe and Eric Whichman was about as fun as it gets... productive and easy going. 100% perfection in a team. I would never hunt alone again, if I can hunt with men of such caliber. Thanks to Rob Matson, for creating a new technique which was a joy to experiment with. Man, is he on to something! Finding that 4th stone under his radar projection felt like a scientific breakthrough! So Cool! Overall, there was an extreme amount of cooperation between people and as a result many, many stones were saved. That school event was the most significant people event of this fall. The outcome of inspirational seeds that were planted by Mike and Terry will be felt by those children for years to come. The whole community was rocked by that school event! Bravo! Should be a lesson for the next fall immediately after a fall- schools should be approached and a lecture be given I believe that was what H. H. Nininger did a lot of the time. I found 4 cool space stonesbut I made 40 new friends! I don't have to think too long to know which was the greater of the two treasures! I am very disappointed in several meteorite hunters, both new and old to the game, who basically stole their meteorites from the land owners. I do not use those words lightly. To be given permission to hunt on ones property but to claim you found it on the public right of way and refuse to compensate the land owner in anyway . well folks that is plain wrong. Even if that stone was found on a public right of way, you would of not been there in the first place if the land owner hand not given you permission. Did you ever stop to think what impact this behavior might have for everyone else in the field. NO YOU DID NOT. Well, stolen meteorite number one made the land owners very angry and they shut down a prime part of the strewn field. No meteorites recovered there! Lost and gone for good. In fact they talked to neighbors and got other property closed for the rest of us. So while you got your big prize, the rest of us had to deal with your dishonest deed. You know who you are. The second stolen meteorite, well you know who you are as well funny that you stated you found your piece in the public right of way ...I guess that stone belongs to the State of Wisconsin. You may wish that it did indeed belong to the land owners after all I will not tolerate meteorite hunters who are working side by side with the rest of us and who steal meteorites from the land owners and thus leave an image of theft and piracy on all members of this community. This meteorite community is growing and getting more attention than ever before and if your greed and thieving ways continue in the field on the next fall I will drag you out into the open and expose you to the world.
