Darren and James,

With all due respect, and I'm not picking sides here or
trying to get in between either of you nor to correct anyone, but the
article
that Darren quoted from on books sales is an article by Robyn Jackson,
from
Copyright 2003 Seven years ago. I thought the facts were
rather odd
and out of date, since no one listens to 3 hours of radio anymore, not
even old
me with my oldies, since everyone is on their ipod. If I see someone with
a CD
player attached to their arm it's only because they're running along the
lake,
and most have switched to ipods, and most people barely watch 4 hours of
TV
anymore. It didn't give any stats on computer use since 7 years ago not
everyone

had one.

The article from University of Dayton: Erma Bombeck's Writer's
Workshop, is sorely outdated, since Erma, rest her soul has been Dead
since

April 22, 1996.

I'm sure the book stats

have changed, but with the computer and internet, which that ancient 2003
article Didn't even mention is where most people get their news these days
(I
haven't bought a newspaper in two years) and people read more online or
with
their kindle or their ipad than a real book. Then Darren's point is valid
that
books just don't sell like they used to unless someone is lying on a beach
on
vacation or takes one into a restaurant or coffee shop or on the train or
bus
going to work. Believe me, I live in downtown Chicago and I get a warm
soft spot
in my heart when I actually see someone with a book going to work or
someplace.
I love the smell of a book, nothing like that, brings back grade school,
simpler
times I guess. Everyone else is on their iphone or Crackberry reading,
texting

and web surfing.

Don't feel bad Darren, you were making a good point, and
James, don't give up, there are ebooks and you may try that route with
your book

through an online publisher.

I wish you both the best.

Brian

[meteorite-list] Mars thread - Ad rule abuse?

2010-05-23 Thread Richard Kowalski
Since this thread exploded over that advertisement of a book, and ads are
limited to one per week, shouldn't this thread be considered an abuse of that
rule?

Just curious. Not really...

I'm much more interested in viewing the images from the UA HiRISE instrument on
the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. Ari Espinoza and I shared duties yesterday
giving presentations all afternoon at the LPL 50th Anniversary Open Day at Mt.
Lemmon. The images of Mars being made today will simple knock your socks off.

While viewing them on your computer screen isn't like seeing them on a 10 foot
wide screen we were using yesterday, but they'll no doubt knock your socks off
nonetheless!

Thanks to all that responded to my question on making thin

them commercially done is just too much for an old retired vet. I

 Steve, James and Listees,

Steve and James mentioned intelligence. Very important. Interpreting

Mars source data that might promote a vita hypothesis requires
 intelligence.

Curious. With all the academics we have on List, how many are
Mensans? The only criteria for membership is to have a demonstrated
IQ in the top two percentile. If 100 adults took a Stanford-Binet,
or Cattell, or the proctored Mensa Weschler exam...the prospective
Mensan would score first, or second. An IQ of 144 places one in the
genius range. Only .013% of the world's population scores above 144.

Having a very high IQ does not guarantee you'll be smart about
everything, or get rich, or make lasting relationships. In fact, it
can be a real detriment to accomplishing anything. One of the
pleasant things about having a genius level IQ is that people very
seldom have to explain to you what their talking about.

Re: [meteorite-list] Photo color issue update - colored scale cubes

2010-05-23 Thread Meteorites USA

Hi List,

With all due respect Steve, normally you would be right. About
traditional art photography, or perhaps editorials, or such But
we're not talking about editorials or art. Or at least I'm not.

I'm referring to the industry standard in product photography online.
I would guesstimate maybe 99% of ALL retail catalogs online have white
backgrounds for their product precisely because it adds greater contrast
and provides a sharper, clearer image, with more accurate color visually
to the consumer/viewer. If you don't like white, don't use white, it's
all personal preference. In my opinion of course...White ROCKS! And
white works... I've been in business online for over 10 years and we
would clip our product images backgrounds out completely. We've done
market tests with backgrounds and without backgrounds. We've
experimented with all sorts of solid colored backgrounds as well, and
white backgrounds always pull a higher response rate.

Again, I think it comes down to personal preference as Anne spoke of
earlier. I love other background colors, blues, reds, greens, grays...
One of the biggest No nos in the industry is using a mottled or busy
background for your subject. It detracts from the object being
photographed and the eye has a very hard time discerning the subject
from the background.

I will agree however that a polarizing filter and/or a gray background
will bring out detail, but one with skill with the camera can do this
with any solid color background IF proper white balancing is used.

Contrast is good, in my opinion.

Regards,
Eric

2010-05-23 Thread James Balister
Warren,  you and all others here are NOT stupid!  Remember I said that some
will be able to see them and others will not.  I know many who can and many who
can not.  And yes I read the works of Plato back in 57, Atlantis was
interesting!  I loved Charles fort's books, and I even read My Strugle!
But I do hope that you now see that my Mars research, which actually stems from
my interest in meteorites, is nothing.  And will never be.  But some day some
OFFICIAL will anounce that they just discoverd buildings on Mars and show you
my picture.  But you and I know that we knew it all along.  By the way, we
never heard from the folks that could see it!
Now lets get back to meteorites!  I live in Wisconsin and still have not gotten
to the new strewn field!  How about you?

give up, you win. You're so intelligent that you can see a gray house from

 Warren the
answer might be the way our brains are trained to see things.  We are

blind to some things.  Ever check traffic and see
 nothing?  But just before you
pull out from a stop sign a car
races by?  And you never saw it comming!  We all
 see what
we want to see!  Perhaps it is just out DNA.  As soo as I can dig up
 my
original research project, I have so many that I am not sure
 where it is, I will
post a photo direct from NASA/JPL's site PDS
map a planet, the new one.  It is
 high res.  Maybe that
will help.  Then you can see where all the good meteorites

 come from!

Ok... so say I do see this...
 how
 does that

Why can't someone show me a picture

Why are ALL U.F.O. pictures crap??? Uncle Ned

Hi Ryan and welcome!

If you have any impact breccia, shocked quartz or shatter cones and you knew
where the specimens were collected, you'll get a lot of action on List.

Subject: [meteorite-list] AD - New Collector Rock TRADE

Hi All,
I sent this out last week and had a few replys (Thanks!) and
thought I'd try it one more time. I've been reading the list for a few
months now and finally thought I may have something to offer (albeit
somewhat self-centered). Im a new collector of meteorites, and am
looking to trade mineral specimens for meteorites or related things to
bolster my tiny collection. Im a geologist, and have been an avid
rockhound for the last 10 years of my 25. That said, I have a literal
ton of rocks and I figured that since this list deals with meteorites,
I should try and offer things that are more related to space rocks
than not. Im simply looking to swap some of my extra rocks for some of
your extra space rocks. I know meteorites are or can be expensive, so
im willing to trade what you think is fair. If you are looking for
some specific mineral/rock, ask and I may have a sample or two
somewhere. Email me at ryan.weidert at gmail.com if interested or have
any questions. I'd be glad to answer them (if I can haha)!
Thanks! Have a Great Weekend!
~ Ryan Weidert

I have the following Earth rocks up for trade:

All Photos-
http://s261.photobucket.com/albums/ii66/no-limitation/Rock%20Trade%20for%20Meteorites/
)

Olivine Nodules (volcanic bombs) - the same mineral in those beautiful
pallasites except from the Earths mantle, 30+ miles down!
- whole with basalt crust
- broken exposing crystals
- numerous large fragments
- cut pieces upon request

Olivine Sand (crushed and screened nodules)
- 1mm unsorted
- 1-2mm unsorted
- 2-4mm unsorted
- 3-5mm hand picked apple green crystals.
- 2-3mm hand sorted apple green crystals.

Moqui Marbles - Spherical (or nearly so) hematite concretions formed
within sandstone.
- Classic newbie meteorwrongs

Obsidian Nodules
- Classic newbie meteorwrongs
- Some have nice regmaglypys

Other rocks...

Cleavelandite (Albite - a fledspar)
- Large specimens (most over 10cm x 10cm
- Many with mica

Quartz Crystals
- A few larger ones (~5x10cm)
- Opaque to near crystal clear

Geodes - Hauser Beds, Southern California
- Uncut 'nodules' up too 8cm across.
- note, some may not be hollow inside.

Just so that some folks are aware about the Hauser Beds...Back in the 70's
I dug up a couple hundred of these geodes and opened everyone of them up.
The heavy one's were the nodules (solid inside) and they didn't look too
bad, but weren't very colorful. The hollow one's were a bit of a
disappointment. They weren't really all that pretty. The one's that had
crystals, the
crystals were small. A good lot of them had no crystals at all and contained
some kind of pink stuff. These went into the land fill as fast as I could
crack them open.

[meteorite-list] No buildings or alien-made structures on Mars (was Mars Odyssey THEMIS Images: ET? - NOT!!)

Hi James,

You can believe whatever you want, but I think the reason why you aren't
selling any books is because nobody else believes you. You had said that
there are some who said that they see what you are seeing, but if that was
the case, wouldn't THEY buy your book?

By the way, we never heard from the folks that could see it!

Exactly! If others on this list could see what you are seeing, wouldn't
they say so? If I stare at a speck of dirt (or the texturized blobs) on the
wall long enough, my IMAGINATION will start to see different shapes in it.
But that doesn't mean that there is anything really there besides dirt or
texturized blobs.

I seriously hope you get help (read: medicine) for your delusional

Step back and take a look at what you are saying. We aren't the ones that are
messed up here YOU are sir. YOU are messed up in the head and you are
starting to annoy me by posting all my responses to you on the list.

It's clear you are proud of resembling someone that possibly sought to make
Mercury a drink or perhaps explored eating paint chips as a child. I think you
must enjoy having a bunch of folks waste thier time telling you that you are
crazy. Perhaps you are here to help sell your books, knowing that some of us
like bathroom humor and maybe you'd make a quick buck.

Whatever your reasons, I want no part of it. I will not be talking to you any
further and I would appreciate it if you'd stop hijacking my emails and
bouncing them off the METlist so as to continue a thread that is so off topic
it could work its way onto Jerry Springer.

Believe what you want, just stay away from me.

Bob, You see it! I know you do! But your mind just refuses to belive it! It
tells you that there is nothing there to keep you safe in your own little
world. Klick your heels together three times and say I belive! I belive! I

 Hi James,

You can believe whatever you want, but I think the reason why
 you aren't
selling any books is because nobody else believes you. You
 had said that
there are some who said that they see what you are seeing, but
 if that was
the case, wouldn't THEY buy your book?

 By the way, we
never heard from the folks that could see it!

 Exactly! If others on
this list could see what you are seeing, wouldn't
 they say so? If I
stare at a speck of dirt (or the texturized blobs) on the
 wall long enough,
my IMAGINATION will start to see different shapes in it.
 But that doesn't
mean that there is anything really there besides dirt or
 texturized
 blobs.

I seriously hope you get help (read: medicine) for your
 delusional
 condition.

 Regards,

 Bob

That sounds like quite a thin
section  collection!  A David New Zagami!!!

 Wow!

You will find some  beautiful sites in lava
basalt.  Check this out.  It is
a lava basalt  that looked like a meteorite, at least
 enough to have it
checked out.  The  thin section turned out great
so I photographed it any  way.

Hi Sergei, Martin and List,

I second Martin's comments. The Encyclopedia of Meteorites is a
valuable resource to the meteorite community. Thanks to Pierre-Marie
Pele for creating the original site. And thanks to Sergei and the
IMCA for updating the interface and implementing many new features.

It is very informative (and fun) to browse through the collections and
look at the various specimens residing in cabinets around the world.
:)

Best regards and happy collecting!
