[meteorite-list] Circumstances of fireball associated with Salzwedel fall November 1985

2010-07-14 Thread David Entwistle

Hi,

Does anyone have any references, or recollection, of the circumstances
of the fireball which proceeded the meteorite fall at Salzwedel on the
14th November, 1985. Direction of travel, magnitude, locations of
observers - that sort of thing?

Met. Bull. No. 64, Meteoritics_ 21*, 309-313 (1986) simply says, A
single mass weighing 43g was found in a wood after a fireball had been
seen, ref. of 1986.

I'm curious to know if it could have been seen from south-east England -
unlikely I know, but maybe possible?...

Many thanks,

Hello David and List,

I can come up with two important references:

RENDTEL J. and KNÖFEL A. (1986) Meteroitenfall
in Hohenlangenbeck (Sterne 62, 181-183).

RENDTEL J., KNÖFEL A. and SCHARFF P. (1986) Meteoritenfall
in der DDR (Astronomie und Raumfahrt 24, 98-99).

As André is a member of both the German forum and the U.S. MetList,
he will surely read your inquiry and be able and willing to provide
useful information on the Salzwedel LL6 chondrite fall!

Best wishes from

Re: [meteorite-list] Contest #2 - Free Rare Earth Magnets and Meteorite

2010-07-14 Thread Galactic Stone Ironworks
Hi Listees!

There is no winner yet for the last trivia contest. I received
several replies and some correctly guessed one of the four meteorites.
So, here are some clues :

Question #1 - what H4 chondrite was accidentally found while searching
 for Libyan Desert Glass?

#1 is an Egyptian meteorite

Question #2 - This meteorite is one of the rarest types and hails from
a nation with only a handful of meteorite finds/falls. It was
considered similar to an unusual Australian meteorite. Name this
 meteorite.

#2 is a type meteorite

Question #3 - Which tiny L6 chondrite has a connection with one of
the great personalities of meteoritics? If not for this connection,
this very small and obscure OC would be without trivia value.

#3 is a Nininger find

Bonus Question - This stubborn meteorite also has a connection to
one of the great minds of meteoritics. What meteorite is it?

#4 is also a Nininger find

Good luck!

 Greetings Listees!

My previous contest was too easy - I received a correct answer in less
than 30 minutes. And I received several guesses that correctly named
1 or 2 of the 3 meteorites. So, I thought I would give everyone
another chance to win a prize.

Now I am going to dig deep down into the records of obscure
meteorites. These are going to be simple questions with no tricks,
but they are going to be more difficult to answer.

Question #1 - what H4 chondrite was accidentally found while searching
 for Libyan Desert Glass?

The first person to correct answer all 3 questions gets a rare earth
magnet and meteorite. Answer the Bonus Question, and I will double
 the prize!

 Good luck!

roof, but the owner kept the entire mass and would not let it be
 analyzed or classified?

Question : What iron meteorite was found near the site of one of
America's most deadly civil war battles?

 (proper names only, no pseudonyms)

resolve several details of the sketch which is shown in your forwarded

Curiosity Spins Its Wheels
Jet Propulsion Laboratory
July 13, 2010

The wheels that will touch down on Mars in 2012 are several rotations
closer to spinning on the rocky trails of Mars.

This video clip http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/video/index.cfm?id=910 shows
engineers in the JPL clean room where the rover is being assembled as
they put all six wheels into motion for the first time.

Engineers raised the rover just as a car mechanic would hoist a car to
check the wheels, and started the engine to get the wheels rotating.
The wheel mobility system has 10 motors in all-four for steering the
rover and six for driving. During this test, all 10 motors ran in every
direction. Each wheel spun forward and backwards.

Next up for Curiosity is a series of tune-ups to prep the rover for
driving.

[meteorite-list] Answers - Contest #2 - Free Rare Earth Magnets and Meteorite

2010-07-14 Thread Galactic Stone Ironworks
Hi List!

I received a TON of replies to this latest contest and nobody has
guessed more than one correctly. But, I may have been too vague in my
clues and it might be impossible to reasonably guess the correct
meteorites. My first contest was solved quickly and this second one
might never be solved, so I am going to post the answers.

Question #1 - what H4 chondrite was accidentally found while searching
for Libyan Desert Glass?

Answer - Abu Moharek. As Jason Utas pointed out, this question was
fairly vague and many meteorites could qualify as the correct answer.
I selected Abu Moharek based on the write-up in Grady's CoM which said
the meteorite was found while searching for LDG.

Question #2 - This meteorite is one of the rarest types and hails from
a nation with only a handful of meteorite finds/falls. It was
considered similar to an unusual Australian meteorite. Name this
meteorite.

Answer - Rumuruti, which fell in Kenya. One of only four meteorites
from Kenya. Rumuruti was considered similar to the Carlisle Lakes
R3.8 meteorite which was found in Australia in 1977.

Question #3 - Which tiny L6 chondrite has a connection with one of
the great personalities of meteoritics? If not for this connection,
this very small and obscure OC would be without trivia value.

Answer - Lost Lake. This tiny L6 chondrite, found by Nininger, weighs
a mere 11 grams. This question may have been vague as well. I'm not
sure, but it is possible that Nininger found more than one small/tiny
L6.

Bonus Question - This stubborn meteorite also has a connection to
one of the great minds of meteoritics. What meteorite is it?

Answer - El Burro. It is an iron IIAB found in Mexico by Nininger in
1939. This one was simply a play on words. El Burro is Spanish for
an animal with a reputation for stubborn behavior.

I want to thank everyone who took the time to cipher out this contest.
Next time, I will try to find a suitable middle-ground between
questions that are too easy and ones that are impossibly vague.

Best regards,

MikeG

Next up for Curiosity is a series of tune-ups to prep the rover for
driving.

Learn more about Curiosity at: http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/msl/ .

Re: [meteorite-list] Circumstances of fireball associatedwith Salzwedel fall November 1985

2010-07-14 Thread Dieter Heinlein

Hello David and List,

the fireball, that was observed with the Salzwedel meteorite fall, was catched
with
a meteor camera of the European Network. Unfortunately, the bolide was
registered
only by one camera station (since the others had poor weather). So, it was not
pos-
sible to reduce the fireball trajectory precisely (like in the more recent
cases of the
Neuschwanstein and Jesenice meteorite falls).

Best regards

Dieter

Best wishes from
scalding hot
Germany,

Bernd

Bernd,

Many thanks - I'll try and track those two references down.

I see that the fireball associated with the Salzwedel fall also gets a brief
mention in:
