Aloha Elton,

Also recently there was a NWA recovered which had small fragments
apparently
embedded in a black glass on one side suggesting that a swarm of
fragments
drafting the larger mass inside its slipstream. The swarm caught up to it
and
adhered to the fused pool of material on the downwind side of the stone.
What

has become of that recovery? Anyone formally researching it?

Not sure about that particular NWA, but I have a Gao with larger
ʻhitchhikersʻ that probably formed in similar fashion:

G'day Carl,

Yes this is 100% melt material. By that I mean there is no main meteorite
piece that the others are attached to... just dozens of fragments held
together by fusion crust. VERY unusual stuff which I believe was dubbed
Ralewite in the past after Stefan Ralew who first bought it to our
attention.

Cheers,

Jeff

there has been reported some new methods of figuring out the age of meteorites
which is supposed to be more accurate. Bible enthusiests believe the universe
is only 6k years old. Dna combinations and statistics on actual rates of change
would put life at 430 billion years old. Half lives of isotopes might be an
intriguing method to guess at the age of material but our own experiments with
nuclear fusion and fission would tend to hint that material closer to the sun
excited by radiation which may be 20 or more billion years old would test by
the radiation methods as being younger than newer material that spent its life
way out past pluto. Since the big bang there are at least 12 vectors necessary
to determine the cosmogenic age of any particle if we exclude Einstiens
equations on time . Adding time as a variable instead of a constant creates an
infinite possibility of half lives and universes. I have an hydrogen atom. How
old is it? The world may never
 know!

2010-07-27 Thread Richard Kowalski
Hi Steve.

Not quite sure where you are getting your age information from, as all except
the statement of the biblical calculation is incorrect. The age of the universe
and so the age of Hydrogen, is pretty well pinned down.

It is known that the universe is approximately 13,750,000,000 years old, plus
or minus 170,000,000 years. Expect that 170 million year uncertainty to
continue to become smaller in the coming years.

were dopplar shift.rotation of the universe and time dilation from black holes
included in the studies you refrer to? And just how fast is the universe
rotating? All of these variables create infinite combinations. I once heard how
the string theory didnt explain how small particles bounced around while large
ones floated smoothly by. Catching some sun on the beach at Galveston I
observed large freightors floating smoothly by while small beach balls bounced
up and down in the waves. The whole universe is made of fractyls. Its all
waves. D equals1/t where d is the size of the universe ant t is all time.
Cheers! Steve

Remaining indoors is only one solution, Count. As I learned in school long
time ago, the appropriate reaction in the case of ABC-attack while walking
outdoors is: jumping into the next roadside ditch and protecting your head
with the schoolbag.

Well, that would do in the case of an alien-meteoritical attack as well I
guess. In that special situation carrying a dip net with you would be fine
:-)

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorites as Ammunition

2010-07-27 Thread Thunder Stone

Not sure about reality, but there's and awesome Outer Limits where a
meteorite lands in either Japan or China and they make ammunition (bullets) out
of the iron and... you guessed it... four solders get shot, and get taken over
by aliens that were within (inside) the meteorite (unsure if this is how they
traveled or what) and these four individuals did amazing feats (through mind
control) and built a spaceship to take some humans to their alien world.  It's
a really good episode if you like that kind of show - it was first aired on the
original Outer Limits and also redone on the 1990's Outer Limits.

Pretty cool... one of my favorites

Not quite sure where you are getting your age information from, as all

It is known that the universe is approximately 13,750,000,000 years
old, plus or minus 170,000,000 years. Expect that 170 million year

there has been reported some new
methods of figuring out the age of meteorites which is
supposed to be more accurate. Bible enthusiests believe the
universe is only 6k years old. Dna combinations and
statistics on actual rates of change would put life at 430
billion years old. Half lives of isotopes might be an
intriguing method to guess at the age of material but our
own experiments with nuclear fusion and fission would tend
to hint that material closer to the sun excited by
radiation which may be 20 or more billion years
old would test by the radiation methods as being younger
than newer material that spent its life way out past pluto.
Since the big bang there are at least 12 vectors necessary
to determine the cosmogenic age of any particle if we
exclude Einstiens equations on time . Adding time as a
variable instead of a constant creates an infinite
possibility of half lives and universes. I have an hydrogen
atom. How old is it? The world may never
 know!

[meteorite-list] AD - Urgent Sale: Zacatecas

2010-07-27 Thread Impactika
Hello List Members,

I really don't do this very often, but...

One of my customers has asked me to sell quickly the large end-piece of
Zacatecas (1969) that he had bought from Al Lang years ago. You can see it on
my web-site, at the bottom of this page:
_http://www.impactika.com/MetIRON.htm_ (http://www.impactika.com/MetIRON.htm)
It is a very nice end-piece, 7480 grams, newly re-polished and etched, and
showing 2 distinctive patterns.
Here is a picture: _http://www.impactika.com/catpix/FS007.jpg_
(http://www.impactika.com/catpix/FS007.jpg)

I see Zacatecas listed on the Net for $4/gram, but, because he is looking
for a quick sale, my customer is only asking $1/gram. That makes it $7480.00

Any questions, please email me off-list.
Thank you.

[meteorite-list] Slow Classifications

2010-07-27 Thread Galactic Stone Ironworks
Hi Listees!

Does anyone have any updates on the classifications of the following meteorites?

Lorton
Kosice
Wisconsin (Livingston/Mifflin)
Cartersville

None of these falls have been published in the Meteoritical Bulletin
yet and there has been no word on the petrologic types. If anyone
knows the petrologic types of these meteorites, please share that
info. :)

Best regards,

MikeG

Ok I agree what is the hold up? What is the lack of enthusiasm? Why
are the people who do the classification work not excited to produce
results? Is there something about a meteorite that falls from space to
the earth that is not exciting?

Re: [meteorite-list] Slow Classifications

2010-07-27 Thread Galactic Stone Ironworks
Hi Greg,

It's not instant gratification I want, I am just curious about these
falls and want to know more about them. Cartersville fell over a year
ago. And it's been over 6 months since Lorton. I understand that
Lorton is tied up legally, so it's not available for analysis. It's
been 3 months since Wisconsin and there is material in the hands of
those who can classify it. I admit that I am inexperienced with the
classification part of meteorites, but how long does it take to make a
thin section and then look at it? I would think that the scientists
would be more eager than I to know the types, so I would imagine that
it's not the scientist's fault if the classification is slow. In the
case of Lorton, it's obviously legal red tape. But what about
Cartersville, Kosice and Wisconsin? I just think it's a bit weird and
inconsistent - we saw a classification for Ash Creek within a week of
the fall. So, apparently Ash Creek was deemed important enough for an
expedited classification. Why is Wisconsin and others so different?
Or, what was different about Ash Creek?

I'm a patient guy, but I am also a curious one and I'd wondering why
some falls get classified quick and others languish for years.

Best regards,

MikeG

PS - maybe that Galapagos turtle is doing the classifications. ;)

Re: [meteorite-list] Slow Classifications

2010-07-27 Thread Richard Montgomery
Perhaps all of us in the field should schedule a field-trip-assembly to
the labs. After all, what NWA # are they working on now, 7000? We will and
should wait. And along with Greg, don't we all want solid solid solid
classification? Otherwise it will become a mess (perhaps may already be,
considering, for example, the pending pairing impatient 5400 science) if the
very precise anaysis is compromised. I'll wait, as we all should,
considering how long it took our gifts took to show up on our doorstep!

[meteorite-list] Meteorites as Ammunition

2010-07-27 Thread bill kies

Projectiles made from meteoric iron and it's related inclusions would destroy
the barrel of just about any firearm.

Hi Count and List,
I wonder, has anyone ever fashioned bullets out of iron meteorites?

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorites as Ammunition

2010-07-27 Thread Galactic Stone Ironworks
You'd have to paint him to match the desert sands - or he would end up
as bowl of turtle soup in some nomad's tent. ;)

On a more serious, sneaky and illegal note - I wonder if anyone has
put magnets in their shoes and then took a walk around Meteor Crater?
I can picture some sneak going back to his car, taking his shoes off,
removing the magnets, and then shale, spheroids and fragments fall off
the bottom of the shoes. Not that I would condone that, but I bet it
would work.

Arabic and send them down to the Egyptian crater (might need to upgrade
their suspension system to haul all that extra weight !).

Rig up a little belt with some magnets in it, and strap it on his
underside. Then let him crawl across the strewnfield, picking up
little bits of meteorite that stick to his belly! :)

Not sure about reality, but there's and awesome Outer Limits where a
meteorite lands in either Japan or China and they make ammunition
(bullets) out of the iron and... you guessed it... four solders get
 shot,
and get taken over by aliens that were within (inside) the meteorite
(unsure if this is how they traveled or what) and these four
 individuals
did amazing feats (through mind control) and built a spaceship to take
some humans to their alien world. It's a really good episode if you
 like
that kind of show - it was first aired on the original Outer Limits and
also redone on the 1990's Outer Limits.

Pretty cool... one of my favorites

Greg,

The only problem I see making the Galapagos turtle the spokesman and
naming

him BP is:

Most folks would still expect to receive their classifications oily on
in

the process...

[as I beat a hasty retreat]

I like your P.S. for the Galapagos turtle, maybe the 'List' should name
him as a spokesperson, maybe BP, (Be Patient)!! :-)

MikeG

PS - maybe that Galapagos turtle is doing the classifications. ;)

Ok I agree what is the hold up? What is the lack of enthusiasm? Why
are the people who do the classification work not excited to produce
results? Is there something about a meteorite that falls from space to
the earth that is not exciting?

Hi Listees!

Does anyone have any updates on the classifications of the following
meteorites?

Lorton
Kosice
Wisconsin (Livingston/Mifflin)
Cartersville

None of these falls have been published in the Meteoritical Bulletin
yet and there has been no word on the petrologic types. If anyone
knows the petrologic types of these meteorites, please share that
info. :)

Best regards,

MikeG

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorites as Ammunition

2010-07-27 Thread countdeiro
Bill says ...just about any firearm.

Just about any muzzle loader with a patched round can eat balls made of
meteorite material, or anything else for that matter. It wouldn't surprise me
if we learned that some enterprising conquistador had heated up some Campo and
used the balls in his matchlock..or a canon.

Does anyone care to expound on what temp one would have to heat an iron
meteorite to be able to pour the melt into a mold to make a musket ball? Could
different classes of irons have different melt temperatures? Would inclusions
be easily seperated?

Projectiles made from meteoric iron and it's related inclusions would destroy
the barrel of just about any firearm.

Hi Count and List,
I wonder, has anyone ever fashioned bullets out of iron meteorites?
