[meteorite-list] Cunnamulla rock at centre of dispute declared a meteorite

AN ODD-looking rock found in a dirt paddock on an outback western
Queensland property is officially a meteorite.
The 27.6kg object was resting under a gidgee tree near Cunnamulla,
825km west of Brisbane last year, when it was discovered by disability
pensioner Tom King.

Queensland Museum curator Alex Cook has officially declared the rock a
meteorite.

Not too often meteorites of that size come along, it's the second
largest stony meteorite found in Queensland, he said.

It's heavy but the last time a meteorite of this size was found was
about four years ago, a 55kg meteorite was found in Winton.

A tussle broke out last year after the property's caretaker Tom King
found the rock in a dirt paddock at Rywanda Plainview, 70km south of
Cunnamulla.

Mr King took the rock to his Cunnamulla home to use it as a
doorstopper. A dispute erupted between Mr King, the property's owner
Keith Wilson and the lessee Angus McLennan.

The rock was kept by police until a court finally awarded ownership to
Mr Wilson in June.

Mr Wilson said he would not be selling the rock but is yet to decide
where it will rest when he collects it from the museum later this
year. It's not being sold and it's not going out of Queensland. he
said.

NASA's Next Mars Rover Rolls Over Ramps
Jet Propulsion Laboratory
September 13, 2010

PASADENA, Calif. -- The rover Curiosity, which NASA's Mars Science
Laboratory mission will place on Mars in August 2012, has been rolling
over ramps in a clean room at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory to test
its mobility system.

Curiosity uses the same type of six-wheel, rocker-bogie suspension
system as previous Mars rovers, for handling uneven terrain during
drives. Its wheels are half a meter (20 inches) in diameter, twice the
height of the wheels on the Spirit and Opportunity rovers currently on Mars.

Launch of the Mars Science Laboratory is scheduled for 2011 during the
period from Nov. 25 to Dec. 18. The mission is designed to operate
Curiosity on Mars for a full Martian year, which equals about two Earth
years.

A public lecture by Mars Science Laboratory Chief Scientist John
Grotzinger, of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, will
take place at JPL on Thursday, Sept. 16, beginning at 7 p.m. PDT Time
(10 p.m. EDT). Live video streaming, supplemented by a real-time web
chat to take public questions, will air on Ustream at
http://www.ustream.tv/channel/nasajpl .

JPL, a division of Caltech, manages the Mars Science Laboratory Project
for the NASA Science Mission Directorate, Washington. More information
about the mission is online at: http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/msl/ .

[meteorite-list] NASA's Hubble Harvests Distant Solar System Objects

2010-09-14 Thread Jeff Kuyken

http://www.cfa.harvard.edu/news/2010/pr201015.html

NASA's Hubble Harvests Distant Solar System Objects

Cambridge, MA - Beyond the orbit of Neptune reside countless icy rocks known
as trans-Neptunian objects (TNOs). One of the biggest, Pluto, is classified
as a dwarf planet. The region also supplies us with comets such as famous
Comet Halley. Most TNOs are small and receive little sunlight, making them
faint and difficult to spot.
Now, astronomers using clever techniques to cull the data archives of NASA's
Hubble Space Telescope have added 14 new TNOs to the catalog. Their method
promises to turn up hundreds more.

Trans-Neptunian objects interest us because they are building blocks left
over from the formation of the solar system, explained lead author Cesar
Fuentes, formerly with the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and
now at Northern Arizona University.

As TNOs slowly orbit the sun, they move against the starry background,
appearing as streaks of light in time exposure photographs. The team
developed software to analyze hundreds of Hubble images hunting for such
streaks. After promising candidates were flagged, the images were visually
examined to confirm or refute each discovery.

Most TNOs are located near the ecliptic -- a line in the sky marking the
plane of the solar system (since the solar system formed from a disk of
material). Therefore, the team searched within 5 degrees of the ecliptic to
increase their chance of success.

They found 14 objects, including one binary (two TNOs orbiting each other
like a miniature Pluto-Charon system). All were very faint, with most
measuring magnitude 25-27 (more than 100 million times fainter than objects
visible to the unaided eye).

By measuring their motion across the sky, astronomers calculated an orbit
and distance for each object. Combining the distance and brightness (plus an
assumed albedo or reflectivity), they then estimated the size. The newfound
TNOs range from 25 to 60 miles (40-100 km) across.

Unlike planets, which tend to have very flat orbits (known as low
inclination), some TNOs have orbits significantly tilted from the ecliptic
(high inclination). The team examined the size distribution of TNOs with
low- versus high-inclination orbits to gain clues about how the population
has evolved over the past 4.5 billion years.

Generally, smaller trans-Neptunian objects are the shattered remains of
bigger TNOs. Over billions of years, these objects smack together, grinding
each other down. The team found that the size distribution of TNOs with low-
versus high-inclination orbits is about the same as objects get fainter and
smaller. Therefore, both populations (low and high inclination) have similar
collisional histories.

This initial study examined only one-third of a square degree of the sky,
meaning that there is much more area to survey. Hundreds of additional TNOs
may lurk in the Hubble archives at higher ecliptic latitudes. Fuentes and
his colleagues intend to continue their search.

We have proven our ability to detect and characterize TNOs even with data
intended for completely different purposes, Fuentes said.

Re: [meteorite-list] AD-Large (?) Rare Specimens-Still No Reserves!

2010-09-14 Thread Adam Hupe
I consider anything over 200 milligrams (1 carat) large for planetary material,
some with a Total Known Weight of only 26 or 42 grams as is the case with a few
pieces. A 388 milligram specimen is almost 2 carats. I don't see anybody
listing 2 carat diamonds starting at just 99 cents and this material is
millions
of times rarer.

I am not trying to mislead anybody. These are very large specimens for most
collectors and will not disappear into thin air if one sneezes. I do not see
anybody else listing pieces this large without protecting them with some kind
of
reserves.

I guess it is just a matter of perspective.

Best Regards,

Adam

[meteorite-list] MT Meteorite of the Month Martin's Ensisheim Now I'm happy!

2010-09-14 Thread Starsinthedirt
Hi List, Martin Horejsi made my day when I saw a Martin Cube sitting
next to his Ensisheim slice. There have been some great scale cubes offered
to us meteorite collectors recently and I have bought several. My old wood
cubes are not intended as competition!

When I made the first wood scale cubes I said I want to make a cube that
even Martin would set next to his Ensisheim. I wanted to make it look as
old as the meteorite. That's how the cubes came to be called Martin Cubes.

Thanks Martin for sharing a photo of your wonderful slice and for using a
Martin Cube in the shot.

Hi List,

As a relative late comer, I can't imagine a meteorite market without
Hupe eBay auctions. They are a staple of the scene and I think many

Meteorites 2.0 generation have cut their teeth on these auctions and
it will be shame to see them go if the Hupes pull the plug on them.
But it's only a matter of time. eBay keeps squeezing and squeezing
it's sellers for every drop of blood they can get - afterall, CEO's
need those big bonuses so they can run for public office once they run
their company into the ground. What will the next Meg Whitman do if
he/she can't fund their political campaign with our final value fees?

I've said many times before - it's a buyer's market right now. If you
have the money, spend it - you won't regret it later. The value of
these specimens has nowhere to go but up.

Best regards,

MikeG

 Hey Mike,

Call Adam up and he'll sell you as big a piece as you want. I've seen him do
it. He holds more main masses of planetary then anyone I know. Wasn't your
dig a bit uncalled for... or was it was a errant attempt at humour.

Hi Adam,

When I saw your post for Large rare specimens starting at 99 cents, and
no reserves, I was starting to get excited, my mouth salivating at the
 possibilities.

Then I saw that the largest was only 388 milligrams and all the others were
even smaller. Oh Well. Maybe next time.

Re: [meteorite-list] AD-Large (?) Rare Specimens-Still No Reserves!

2010-09-14 Thread Adam Hupe
Dear List,

I appreciate all of the kind comments. I was not really offended by the size
remark. Everybody is entitled to their opinion. After all, if everybody could
afford complete slices of planetary material, then these would be considered
small. Unfortunately, the economy dictates what collectors can really afford.

I expressed my opinions yesterday about crazies and I am sure not everybody
would agree with what I said. I don't expect them to.

Meteorites are not a necessity for most. A collector can make it as cheap or
as
expensive as they want. They can simply collect images of meteorites or they
can go all out. It depends on what they are after or what they can afford.
Right now, a 388 milligram planetary specimen may be more than what most can
afford or if you are very fortunate, could easily be perceived as a minuscule.

I appreciate any specimen, large or small. My brother in law recently found
his
first meteorite after 8 years of intermittent searching. It may be small at
less than 5 grams to some but it is larger than life to him. I couldn't be
more
thrilled with his find. The smile on his face could not be taken away for
weeks.
I could of said, wow, look at how small it is but I simply do not think
that
way. I have seen the largest and maybe the smallest meteorites found in
Nevada. They are all great and I don't think the owners would trade them for
mere planetary pieces. It is all a matter of personal perspective.

Happy Hunting,

Adam

[meteorite-list] NEW Ureilite Slices!! - AD

2010-09-14 Thread Greg Hupe

Dear List Members,

I would like to offer a new ureilite. As we know ureilites are very
difficult to cut and polish due to the numerous nano diamonds in the matrix
and most people do not invest the money or time into offering polished
slices, it is simply not cost effective. Well, I have put the investment
into having this ureilite cut and polished and wish to offer collectors this
rare chance to include a world-class slice at a VERY competitive rate! I was
lucky enough to acquire 25% of this new ureilite and hired one of the best
cutters out there to prepare this material, which was not cheap! He liked
this material so much he asked for a slice for his own collection! The
majority of this meteorite is in a private collection and very likely will
never be made available to collectors. Submitted classification is below the
list of specimens in this email.

Taking decent photographs of this highly polished material was a real
challenge and my images do not do the material justice. The slices are far
better looking in person, displaying the wall-to-wall olivine crystals in a
dazzling array which is a wonder under a microscope or 10x loupe! Please
email Off-List for VERY discounted prices! First to email me, first to
choose.

[meteorite-list] EPOXI Mission Status - September 14, 2010

2010-09-14 Thread Ron Baalke

http://epoxi.umd.edu/1mission/status.shtml

EPOXI Mission Status
Michael A'Hearn
EPOXI Principal Investigator
September 14, 2010

We have now been observing the comet for about a week (we began
on Sunday, 5 September). After the first day it was clear that portions
of the spacecraft were getting hotter than we had predicted. The
previously agreed procedure was executed to turn off the HRI, which
generates a moderate amount of heat in the parts of the spacecraft near
the telecommunications system. As we approach the comet, the geometry
changes enough to make the instruments and the other parts of the
spacecraft fit better into the shadow behind the solar panels so things
will cool off and we can turn the HRI back on. Although we had planned
on taking HRI images during this period, we had not scheduled any
spectroscopy until the end of September and we expect to have the
instrument turned back on by then.

We have begun preliminary analyses of the images from the MRI and we can
already see variations in the brightness that appear to be correlated
with the rotational period that has been previously announced by
ground-based observers (Knight et al., IAU Circular 9163), namely 16.6
hours. At this time we only take observations every 6 hours because of
the heating of the spacecraft, so we do not yet have enough temporal
resolution to separate how much of the variation is due to the varying
cross-section of the nucleus and how much is due to activity, but it
seems clear that there is some variation in activity, possibly including
at least one short-duration outburst.

In our images, the coma is seen to extend several tens of thousands of
km (Image 1 http://epoxi.umd.edu/3gallery/Hartley2_first_light.shtml
released 8 Sep; Image 2 http://epoxi.umd.edu/3gallery/20100913_103P.shtml
released 14 Sept). As a point of comparison, at the time of the previously
released image (5 Sept), the comet was 0.40 AU from the spacecraft but
only 0.36 AU from Earth. We will be looking for any structure in the
images and whether that structure varies with rotation.

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite Hunters Magazine

2010-09-14 Thread Meteorites USA
Greg, I wanted to take moment and thank you publicly for the extremely
kind words and humbling comments regarding Meteorite Hunting
Collecting magazine. I truly am honored you feel this way about it. I
hope my passion for this great science shines through in the full color
pages of the magazine. I hope MHC is received well by everyone in this
community, and that it's seen as an addition the the great content
provided by METEORITE magazine for so long.

Hopefully my small contribution to the meteorite community will inspire
future meteorite hunters and collectors to become more involved with the
recovery, study, and collection of meteorites. This is a wonderfully
exciting science and hobby for many thousands of people worldwide, and
has become more than an obsession for some.

We have many people to thank for the magazine, and I could not have done
it with their help and support. It's the support of people like you that
make the magazine possible.

THANK YOU!

Regards,
Eric

Re: [meteorite-list] AD-Large (?) Rare Specimens-Still No Reserves!

2010-09-14 Thread Peter Scherff
Hi,

Large is a relatively meaningless word. What I think of as large
my wife may think of as small. I am looking for a sample of mars over 20
grams. For me that is large. For Bob Haag that would probably be small.

Thanks,

Dear List,

I appreciate all of the kind comments. I was not really offended by the size

remark. Everybody is entitled to their opinion. After all, if everybody
could
afford complete slices of planetary material, then these would be considered

small. Unfortunately, the economy dictates what collectors can really
afford.

I expressed my opinions yesterday about crazies and I am sure not everybody
would agree with what I said. I don't expect them to.

Meteorites are not a necessity for most. A collector can make it as cheap
or as
expensive as they want. They can simply collect images of meteorites or
they
can go all out. It depends on what they are after or what they can afford.
Right now, a 388 milligram planetary specimen may be more than what most can

afford or if you are very fortunate, could easily be perceived as a
minuscule.

I appreciate any specimen, large or small. My brother in law recently found
his
first meteorite after 8 years of intermittent searching. It may be small at

less than 5 grams to some but it is larger than life to him. I couldn't be
more
thrilled with his find. The smile on his face could not be taken away for
weeks.
I could of said, wow, look at how small it is but I simply do not think
that
way. I have seen the largest and maybe the smallest meteorites found in
Nevada. They are all great and I don't think the owners would trade them
for
mere planetary pieces. It is all a matter of personal perspective.

Happy Hunting,

Adam

2010-09-14 Thread Don Merchant
I am a serious ghost hunter for many years who has traveled around the
country to some of the most haunted places in the United States as well as
ghost hunted with TAPS several times! I created 2 documentary CD's on the
haunted paranormal. One on EVP-Electronic Voice Phenomena and the other
about a very haunted former poorhouse now called Rolling Hills located in
East Bethany N.Y. I have my own paranormal website called Sci Tech
Paranormal Investigations. www.scitechpi.com I also did a 2 year study of
the Frank's Box (an electronic instrument that can communicate with the
other side) and modified a version of the Frank's Box of which I used to
create a 2 part video about this amazing electronic instrument posted on
YouTube while proving by mathematics that this instrument is real and
works!! The Videos can be viewed on my website at
http://www.scitechpi.com/franksbox.html If you find time, check the videos
out, they will totally make you think differently of the afterlife!

Re: [meteorite-list] Other hobbies?

2010-09-14 Thread Greg Catterton
My current collections are unopened Star Wars stuff, Pink Floyd bootlegs (audio
and video), Cal Ripken Jr baseball cards (from when I was a kid) assorted rocks
and minerals topped off with a collection of paper money from around the world.
I also have some assorted old and unusual coins that includes 3 legged buffalo
nickel and a shoebox full of old civil war currency that was my grandfathers. I
have been told that some of it is really rare, but just havent ever taken the
time to see what all its worth as I likely wouldnt ever sell it anyways.

Aside from collecting, I enjoy video games (PS3 all the way) and pretty much
anything that includes outdoor activities when time permits... keeping up with
2 kids, 3 dogs, 2 cats and a ferret takes up most my time.

Hope everyone is doing good, I am off to take pictures of my new 1.39g of
Orgueil...
