[meteorite-list] Origin of Meteorites
Origin of Meteorites Poster: http://www.meteoritesusa.com/images/Origins-Poster.jpg Let me know what you guys think, I'm considering getting these printed up as 36x24 wall posters. If I get a good enough response I'll get them printed. I might even mail out a few freebies with some of the magazines. Wholesale pricing available (contact offlist). I get VERY good printing rates since we're printing the magazine with the same printing company. Same quality 100# glossy paper, vivid color inks, and clear coating to protect from finger prints and scratches. Re: [meteorite-list] I have a problem with some rusting meteorites
The mistake many people make is they concentrate only on moisture control (which is still very important), but we should also worry about oxygen. The use of Oxygen scavengers has been standard in most museums for years now - I recommend them , they are little sachets that contain oxygen absorbing chemical, they need to be replaced periodically, and cannot be recharged like dessicant. Many food manufacturers use them by the bucket load. This stops the other main ingredient of rust! If someone can find out what chemical they use, you could probably buy the chemical powder and make your own, for not much money. Also a sacrificial piece of metal (magnesium or similar) would also eat up free oxygen, which might be a cheap alternative. There are also 'VCI sprays' and VCI foam pads which emit a thin film of molecular oil which helps prevent air getting to the surface of the iron, though these do work they are not all that effective. I did some trials with them and didn't actually notice much of an effect long term over no use. As always dessicant is only effective if you change it regularly , remember that once it is saturated with moisture it is like having a puddle of water in your cabinet when the humidity goes down a bit, the water will re evaporate into the air again - so change it every few weeks! Re: [meteorite-list] I have a problem with some rusting meteorites
Hi Mike and all, Don't know where you read to have bright lights but having those can cause specimens to bleach out over time. Especially if you use fluorescent lighting. Part of collecting is keeping a watch over specimens and treating them before they become a big problem. Easier to deal with a little superficial oxidation. As one commenter said, keeping oxygen from specimens is important as well as keeping humidity from your specimens. Buying specimens that are not so rust prone if you live in a humid environment is also a good idea. Admire has always been an extremely bad ruster as well as about half of the pallasites. Imilac, Esquel, Seymachan, and Albin have always been very stable. --AL Mitterling Mitterling Meteorites and Lab - Original Message - From: Mike Hankey mike.han...@gmail.com To: Tim Heitz midwestmet...@earthlink.net Cc: Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Sent: Monday, October 25, 2010 8:32 PM Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] I have a problem with some rusting meteorites Tim, Funny I was going to ask the same exact question today. Re: [meteorite-list] I have a problem with some rusting meteorites
Hi Jessica, Muonionalusta tends to rust around the natural outside edges where it was exposed to the weather before it was sliced. In my experience it won't rust in the interior of the slice even if you don't treat the outside edges. If you do treat the outside edges where it rusts, you need to keep it very dry and with desiccant. Be sure your desiccant isn't part of the problem as it will absorb moisture and then contaminate the specimen when it is saturated. Also avoid touching specimens to blue colored desiccant that change when spent. One thing that I have not seen mentioned here, keep meteorites at a uniform temperature. Variations in the room or sunlight hitting specimens or cases will cause a minor amount of condensation and ultimately rust. --AL Mitterling Mitterling Meteorites and Lab - Original Message - From: power ofunity energylightandl...@yahoo.com To: Tim Heitz midwestmet...@earthlink.net; Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com Sent: Monday, October 25, 2010 8:11 PM Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] I have a problem with some rusting meteorites I have heard Admire is notorious for this...but I am no expert. [meteorite-list] Apologies - 2nd article available for free - Cape of Good Hope, Bendego and Limerick
Hi, My apologies for not mentioning in my last post that another article of mine is available for free from the Notes Records of the Royal Society website. This one deals about the relatively obscure British chemist Smithson Tennant and his involvement with the study of meteorites in the early 1800s. It's a bit of a detective story which begins with a letter that I purchased at auction, which led to a Cape of Good Hope iron fashioned into a sword for an Emperor, and ended up at the Museum of Natural History in Paris. There was this sample of Limerick in the meteorite collection, whose donor was unknown, and then... But wait! I guess you better read the story if you want to find out the ending! :-) All kidding aside, if you're interested in obtaining another article for free - I think it's kind of interesting - but then again all authors say the same thing about their work - click on the link below. http://rsnr.royalsocietypublishing.org/content/61/3/265.full.pdf+html?sid=8e175cad-b06f-4782-9b27-56db8bff6f07 Thanks. Hi Tim and list, Here is what I do to stop rust on my Irons and pallasites. First remove any surface rust by sanding, buffing or with BKF (barkeepers friend). Second, soak the meteorite in Kano Kroil penetrating oil for at least 8 hours. I use this product in my manufacturing business and it has prevented rusting of metal parts that I keep in cold storage for years. [meteorite-list] Ocean Asteroid Impact Could Deplete Earth's Protective Ozone Layer for Years
NEWS RELEASE FROM THE PLANETARY SCIENCE INSTITUTE SENT: Oct. 25, 2010 FROM: Alan Fischer Public Information Office Planetary Science Institute 520-885-5648 520-622-6300 fisc...@psi.edu Ocean Asteroid Impact Could Deplete Earth's Protective Ozone Layer for Years An asteroid crashing into the deep ocean could have dramatic worldwide environmental effects including depleting the Earth's protective ozone layer for several years, a Planetary Science Institute researcher has found. This could result in a huge spike in ultraviolet radiation levels and hamper efforts to grow crops, as well as affect other life forms on Earth. A medium-sized asteroid - between 500 meters and one km in diameter - smashing into Earth's deep oceans would send vast amounts of seawater into the air, said Elisabetta Pierazzo, PSI senior scientist. In the past, the interest in the effects of oceanic impacts of medium sized asteroids have focused on the danger of regional tsunami, but Pierazzo's new approach, published recently in Earth and Planetary Science Letters, has used computer modeling scenarios to look at the effects such a strike would have on the atmospheric ozone. Working with a team of atmospheric scientists, she looked at two asteroid impact scenarios: 500 meter and one km diameter asteroids impacting an ocean 4 km deep. This work represents the first attempt at combining impact simulations with a three-dimensional shock physics code and atmospheric simulations using a general circulation model with interactive chemistry, she said. The results suggest that mid-latitude oceanic impact of one km asteroids can produce significant global perturbation of upper atmospheric chemistry, including multi-year global ozone depletion comparable to record ozone holes recorded in the mid 1990s. The modeling depicted how rapidly ejected seawater, included as water vapor and compounds like chloride and bromide that hasten the destruction of the ozone, would affect atmospheric chemistry, said Pierazzo, the paper's lead author and project principal investigator. The removal of a significant amount of ozone in the upper atmosphere for an extended period of time can have important biological repercussions at the Earth's surface as a consequence of increase in surface UV-B irradiance, she said. These include increased incidence of erythema (skin reddening), cortical cataracts, changes in plant growth and changes in molecular DNA. While technology does not currently exist for diverting or destroying an asteroid headed for Earth, with enough lead-time and preparation the long-term consequences of such an impact can be diminished, she said. Farmers could plant crops with higher tolerance to UV radiation to make up for the types that would not thrive, or survive, because of the breached ozone layer, she said. Food could be stored to prepare for a few years of reduced productivity, both on land and in the ocean. The spike in UV radiation would also affect humans and animals, she said. The ultraviolet index, or UVI, is a scale used to indicate the intensity of UV radiation at the Earth's surface, and the higher the number the greater chance of damage to the skin and eyes. A UVI of 10 or greater tends to be dangerous, resulting in burns to people with fair skin in a few minutes exposure, she said. The highest UVI recorded on Earth has been 20, she said. The results of a 500-meter asteroid impact could see the UVI jump to values above 20 for several months in the northern subtropics, and an impact by a 1 km asteroid would see the UVI rise up to 56, with levels exceeding 20 for about two years south of about 50 degrees latitude in both hemispheres, she said. A level of 56 has never been recorded before, so we are not sure what it is going to do, she said. It would be produce major sunburn. We could stay inside to protect ourselves, but if you go outside during daylight hours you would burn. You would have to go outside at night, after sunset, to avoid major damage. The research was funded by a NASA Exobiology grant. CONTACT: Elisabetta Pierazzo Senior Scientist 520-547-3951 be...@psi.edu PSI INFORMATION: Mark V. Here's another method involving soaking the meteorite in a solution of sodium hydroxide, easily made from Drano. It comes via Steve Schoner. Go to: http://earthsci.org/fossils/space/craters/met/met.html and scroll down to Repairing Meteorites. I've tried this on a number of Dronino rusters and had good success with a few of the pieces (but not one particularly stubborn one). I also regularly coat my irons with a spray from Gander Mt. outdoor stores used to protect gun metal. It's excellent and really has worked on my Campos. Unfortunately I can't remember the name of it off hand - something like Resolve or Shield. In summer I store these in plastic bags with desiccant and also use a few mini dehumidifiers. _http://www.amazon.com/Remington-Model-365-Mini-Dehumidifier/dp/B0028M3YU6/r ef=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8s=home-gardenqid=1268267140sr=8- 3_ (_http://www.amazon.com/Remington-Model-365-Mini-Dehumidifier/dp/B0028M3YU6/ ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8s=home-gardenqid=1268267140sr=8-3_ (http://www.amazon.com/Remington-Model-365-Mini-Dehumidifier/dp/B0028M3YU6/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8s= home-gardenqid=1268267140sr=8-3) ) I treated my 248 gram Admire over a year ago and it has been rust free ever since. Re: [meteorite-list] I have a problem with some rusting meteorites
Hi List. Mike Miller addressed my larger Dronino slice with fabulous success...I recommend contacting him for his techniques, or better yet, asking for him to help. Wouldn't use it on fresher stones though. These I store in airtight boxes with silicagel. I have 2 pallasites that are starting to show signs of rusting, an Admire and Fukang. Can someone please tell me what I can do to stop the rusting. Is there a way to clean them up and seal it against any further rusting. I willing to try anything new that might work. Any ideas? I live in St.Louis, its very humid here, I know this might be hard to stop. Re: [meteorite-list] I have a problem with some rusting meteorites
Here's a link to there site: _http://www.kanolabs.com/_ (http://www.kanolabs.com/) Third, dry the piece with a cloth. The oil tends to bleed out of pallasites for days because of all there crevices. Fourth, I apply a coat of automotive wax. I prefer a brand called Mothers but I believe any quality brand would work just as well. Lastly, I only openly display my etched irons and pallasites during the dry winter months. I live in northern Illinois and the summer humidity can get high.
