[meteorite-list] The Global Meteorite Price Report - 2011 now available! - (ad)
Collectors and meteorite dealers alike will be happy to know that the latest edition of The Global Meteorite Price Report - 2011 is now available for purchase. Coin and stamp collectors can find ready price guides for about every coin minted or stamp ever printed. I have worked diligently to duplicate this effort with meteorites. No one else is doing this. In 1995 I created a consistent methodology for determing the average price for a typical specimen of its type and have been compiling data since, publishing and selling it beginning in 2005. Collectors - Would you like to calculate the value of your existing collection based on the latest dealer price listings? Do you have a wish list of pending purchases and wonder what today's market price is for these specimens? Dealers - Do you want to be sure your price offerings are within the range of your competition, neither selling too inexpensively nor too dear? With the Tucson Rock-and-Gem Show less than a month away, wouldn't everyone profit by knowing the current average prices of the meteorites they will be buying and selling? To create extra value, I've nearly doubled the amount of different meteorites covered from the successful 2007 report. Additionally, historical prices from past reports are included for trend spotting. The latest ask prices have been compiled by mining nearly every dealer website available, a process that took me over one hundred hours (kids, don't try this at home without extraordinary patience and a large bottle of eye drops.) Meteorites are divided by type and alphabetically for easy reference. Here is an example of the data: July, 2005 February, 2007 September, 2008 December, 2010 IRONS Boxhole $3.00 (3) $2.22. (2) $2.43 (5)$2.32 (3) -4.6% Campo del Cielo $0.16 (4) $0.17 (5) $0.32 (14) $0.39 (13) +21.8% In the above example, a typical Boxhole specimen in size and sold as an individual, had an average dealer ask price of $3.00/gram in July, 2005. There were three dealers selling this typical material. Presently, I found three dealers selling the same typical material for $2.32/gram, down -4.6% from the last survey of September, 2008. Campo, on the other hand, has seen its price go from $0.16/gram offered by four dealers in 2005, to an average of $0.39/gm offered by thirteen dealers selling similar specimens. That price is up +21.8% from the last survey of September, 2008. About 85 different meteorites appeared in my first report in July, 2005. The 2011 report covers 185 meteorites and their permutations. I've added price info for many more NWA's and named meteorites are extensively covered. I suspect most collectors will find the present prices for the majority of their specimens in the report. To be clear, the first two surveys covered the mets in my collection, about 85 names. I expanded to about 125 mets for the September, 2008 report. There is price information on 185 meteorites in this latest 2011 report - virtually everything that at least two dealers are selling somewhere on the planet. I accept no advertising and I am not favoring or promoting any dealer's wares. The prices reflected are an unbiased snapshot of today's market. Even if you thought you knew the prices already, knew the trends in prices and popularity, you will be surprised at many of the findings. This eight page report has been reformatted as an Adobe pdf for easy transmittal to your e-mailbox. The first time I offered this report the response was good. The last two reports were extremely well-received. This time around, following the world's economic crisis/recovery, I believe every collector and dealer should be intensely interested to see how and where the meteorite market, and their collection or inventory, has been impacted. To purchase, please visit Paypal and my account at mars...@gmail.com. Deposit US$15 and a copy for your eyes only please :) will soon be transmitted to your email account. With no moon and almost no clouds, we had a pretty awesome night for the peak of the Quadrantids. Inspired by Pierre Martin's Geminid photos, I decided to mount the DSLR and fisheye lens atop my CGEM and take some piggy backs. I shot 25 second ISO 800 exposures from 8:00 PM to 6:00 AM EST. I only captured one meteor the whole night, but it was a good one. The meteor left behind a smoke trail that I photographed for 20+ consecutive shots, that's almost 10 minutes. Re: [meteorite-list] Tucson Meteorite Auction Catalog
Dear Friends, We now have about 65 specimens in the on line auction catalog For you viewing (and drooling) pleasure. People are still welcome to enter additional items and Darryl Pitt has told me he will be submitting a few shortly - Darryl's pieces Are always highly desirable specimens and bring spirited bidding. In Addition Twink is going to be submitting some nice meteorite jewelry, so, I have not prepared a PRINT Catalog yet - but will do so when these items get in - but no later than Jan 15th, regardless. Please check out the catalog at: http://michaelbloodmeteorites.com/AuctionTucson11.html This is also the time for Absentee bidders to submit their bids. Last year there was an unfortunate breakage of a piece and though I offered to refund all cost, the buyer decided to keep it. Therefore, from now on I will provide whatever packing is required to protect the specimen, including membrane boxing where called for. The absentee bidder will be charged only the actual cost only if there are any packaging fees. Happy Hunting! I like the comment that the meteor was slow by his standards clocking in at a mere 500 miles per hour and that a dragster could almost beat it. I haven't been following this thread, so I don't know what has been brought up previously. I did for some reason read this one message out of curiosity to get a pulse as to what the topic might have been about and the statement above caught my attention. I was wondering if this guy is claiming that he saw a meteor that was glowing when he clocked it at 500 miles per hour? At 500 miles per hour, that would be way too slow of a speed for a meteor to be seen at an incandescent phase. I wonder how he came about his estimation? [meteorite-list] Impact Crater in New Mexico
Hi List, I hope everyone is having a good new year. I plan to go on another meteorite hunting trip to New Mexico soon before the Tucson show. Would you guys think that this is an impact crater? 32°21'54.39N 103°23'47.50W. I remember reading about it on a site but it appears that there are just too many craters in the area to all be impact craters. If they arent impact craters what would be the possibility they are ancient ponds for wildlife? I would imagine that as West Texas and New Mexico dried up, any remaining wet ground would become extremely populated with wild life and over centuries these locations would become deep ponds. I remember such a pond in West Texas where I grew up. Natives to the area told me it was a place that buffalo came to drink and cool down. It was also a pretty big impression in the ground and if you didnt know better, you would think it was an impact crater. I would imagine that a big heard of buffalo could make a pretty lasting impression in the ground. How about these 34° 0'51.00N 105° 8'41.46W? I notice a huge scatter of craters. Is much known about these or what they are? There are a lot of these ancient scars for several miles around. If they aren't impact craters it would be interesting to know what they are. Re: [meteorite-list] Impact Crater in New Mexico
Hi Abe, The first site is most likely sinkholes and ponds from sinkholes. It follows the stratigraphy of the land too well. At the second site, the craters look more man-made and probably mining test pits. Although if you go 1000 feet WSW of your arrow, there seems to be something more naturally crater-shaped... - Yinan On Tue, Jan 4, 2011 at 5:50 PM, Guenther abe.guent...@mnsi.net wrote: Hi List, I hope everyone is having a good new year. If it was heading straight for him as he said, would there be any perception of movement, at all? If it was aimed directly between his eyes, there should be just some point of light get bright before extinguishing...unless he also claims he seen it as a meteor landing right next to him. Then a glowing meteor all the way to the ground would have to be quite large...like several tons or more maybe? [meteorite-list] Quad Video
Regarding the quad fireball picture I posted earlier today... As I was driving home it dawned on me that I recently installed some security cameras and I may have captured this fireball on my north facing camera. When I got home I checked and sure enough, I just barely caught it. Its not the greatest, cause its right on the edge of the camera and it misses the very end of the flight, but still pretty cool. I updated the post with the video at the bottom. Look at the top center of the video. here is the link: http://www.mikesastrophotos.com/comets/2010-quadrantids-meteor-shower/ Thanks, Mike Hankey Freeland MD PS if you are wondering if the security cameras captured either of the two big fireballs that came down in PA last week, no they didn't and i don't want to talk about it. :( __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
Re: [meteorite-list] 2010 Quadrantids Meteor Photo
That's a great image Mike and the animated image of the smoke trail is fantastic too. I've never seen anything like that done before. I think this may have been a small fireball. I made an animated gif showing the meteor and the smoke trail that dissipated afterward. You can see it here. http://www.mikesastrophotos.com/comets/2010-quadrantids-meteor-shower/ Thanks, Mike Hankey Freeland MD __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
[meteorite-list] Someone block the Bozo PLEASE
Some people are too ...erhummmwell are just lacking the sensitivity to be helped politely and need the frying pan in the face approach. She has been told multiple times how to remove herself but persists in this obsolete unsubscribe ritual. Maybe if we all helped her with reminders for the next several days then she might eventually read and act on the advice. I say let her learn the delete key like we have to. Can we at least get her on moderation?
