[meteorite-list] OT Dormant Volcano in Brazil
List, This may be off topic but ,check out slide number 32. It looks like one of Tom Phillips micrographs of a giant chondrule in plain polarized light. Too bad we don't get to see it with crossed nicols. In the south of Brazil there is a dormant volcano that has always captured the interest of adventure-loving people. If you are one of them but think it is too far to travel and join them or else if you see that your level of both financial and physical fitness do not allow Such adventure, then sit back, relax and watch this amazing trip inside earth. Beware, do not ever think you are one of the first stepping into this amazing inner river, pools, stalactites and stalagmites. There are traces of man being there thousands of years ago. http://cid-67758f45b7ca3b3f.office.live.com/view.aspx/%E6%96%B0%E8%BF%91%E6%94%B6%E8%97%8F%E4%BB%96%E4%BA%BAPPS/cavernoso.pps Enjoy. Hi folks, I've added a couple of new entries. An account by the Islamic explorer Ibn Batuta describes an incident involving a Turkish king in 1325. I've been unable to identify the location of this town via google or via MetBul Turkish meteorites, so I've just given it the name described in the account: http://historicfalls.com/2011/03/28/birki/ The second is two accounts of the Hatford fall in England, on 1628. [meteorite-list] Polished Butts - Toliet humor aside, what exactly are they?
Hi Folks, I have seen several references to polished butts in the Met Bulletin. For example, from this recent entry (NWA 6580) approved yesterday - Type specimens available at Cascadia include 1 piece originally 20.0 g, from which one polished thin section and one polished butt were made. Thompson holds the main mass. I did the usual Google Search (polished butt) to find out what this was, and you don't want to know what the results of that search were. Let's just say, that is has nothing to do with meteorites or thin sections. So I have to ask the List - what is a polished butt? I see no connontation of toilet humour, or scatological inference in the use of the word butt. This word has been in use for centuries in the Anglo Saxon tongue and dialects... see...(noun)Rifle Butt...the end of the shoulder stock of firearm. The (noun)Butt End...the end of lengths of rope, lumber and metal... and the phrase and word...(verb)Abutting and (noun)Abutment. A useful, descriptive, word that should be used with impunity. And I would see its appropriate use to described the remaining piece of a meteorite that has been reduced in size to a fraction of it's mass by cutting. Hi List, I agree, the word core is much better than polished butt. :) Thanks for the explanation. I had a hunch that it was related to thin-sections, but Google wouldn't give me anything useful or non-offensive. [meteorite-list] William Higgins - Mooresfort Article - Among top 10 of Royal Society Pubs
Just a note of thanks to all those metlist subscribers who downloaded my article on William Higgins and the Mooresfort meteorite that was published in the Royal Society's peer-reviewed history of science journal, Notes Records of the Royal Society. I just learned today that it was on the top ten list of the most downloaded articles in 2010 - it came in as #7 on the list. To see the announcement, go to: http://rsnr.royalsocietypublishing.org/site/misc/top_ten.xhtml If you click on the link to the article, you can obtain a free download. Because of the popularity of the top 10 articles, the Royal Society has allowed free access to them throughout the year. The complete title of the article is: William Higgins at the Dublin Society, 1810-1820: the loss of a professorship and a claim to the atomic theory The article shows just how historic the Mooresfort meteorite really is! Thanks again to everyone who helped to make the article a success.
