and look for the link that says "leave group" just click the link and
follow the steps its pretty easy i just left all the groups in my
facebook to test this.. which is o.k . since i stopped using facebook
a few years ago because its a waste of time.

Rob, and the Responders,

I have a similar hand held vintage scope and these you will find that these are

[meteorite-list] windowing technique

2011-06-13 Thread Doug Ross
Hello all,

I've been following this mailing list for some time, but this is my first post.
Thanks for all of the good information shared here!

As my meteorite habit grows, I've been experimenting with various home tests
and techniques, using UNWA stones. Windowing stones is my latest kick. No
power tools here, I'm just roughing them in with a diamond file, then sanding
smooth with 100 grit sandpaper, followed by 400 grit to smooth out the
scratches, and rubbing on denim to finish the job. Needless to say, my hands
are rather sore! ;-) I guess the results are not bad under the circumstances.
Here is a stone that I just polished today. I was working with a fairly flat
surface to begin with, but it was a tough onestill took me nearly two
hours. Pretty stone, I think:

http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac16/rootplayer/UNWAwindow1.jpg
http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac16/rootplayer/UNWAwindow2.jpg
http://i881.photobucket.com/albums/ac16/rootplayer/UNWAback.jpg

I welcome any suggestions or critiques on this windowing job. It would be nice
to achieve a high gloss, polished marble kind of effect. I tried wet sanding
on another stone, but that darkened the stone considerably, so now I'm only dry
sanding. Power tools would be nice, but I live in a small apartment, and any
large power tools would be out of the question. Thanks!

Oh dont worry Dean, when i get it i will send you a picture for sure..
PLUS i will compare to pieces i have from the Hupe's plus i think i
have a piece i got from you somewere also.. it just struck me as odd
today when i was walking home that he said "half stone"... i'm giving
the guy the benifit of the doubt as maybe he meant to say "half slice"
and made a typo but he is an IMCA member and this isn't the first time
i had a problem with him I am not mentioning any names as of yet
because he is well known in the community and i dont want to make
accusations against IMCA members because IMCA is such a "respectable"
organization and i have respect for IMCA and people who advertise
their logo i will not start pointing any fingers until i have the
piece in my hand I'm still waiting for it in the mail... so i will
wait this out and see what happens.

Re: [meteorite-list] NWA 001 question

2011-06-13 Thread dean bessey
NWA001 is a single stone just over a kilo. It was part of a very will mixed
group of meteorites that was sold by retired meteorite dealer Michael casper. I
cut NWA001 all up mostly into slices (Except for a 160 gram endpiece which I
believe that Adam Hupe ended up with that was once the main mass but I believe
that he cut it up and sold on ebay in pieces).
I guess theoritically some parts of that end piece could look something like a
half stone if it is flat enough but to call it a half stone seems to be
stretching it. Maybe send me a photo and I can say if such a shape is possible
to be from the original stone..
But otherwise there is no such thing as a half stone of NWA001. I still have a
third of it somewhere so the total amount in collectors hands is well under a
kilo. The biggest piece possibly remaining is the 160 something odd gram (I
cant remember exactly the size) piece that Adam once had (Or possibly still
has) and very little of it wasnt cut into slices (And from there mostly into
smaller ebay size pieces).

Re: [meteorite-list] Dawn Captures Video of Asteroid Vesta Approach

2011-06-13 Thread Sterling K. Webb

It will arrive at Vesta and insert itself in an initial
orbit on July 16, 2011. A few months will be spent
in regularizing the orbit and begin mapping, but
there will be lots of photo ops during that. Dawn will
remain at Vesta for one year, before taking off for
Ceres in July 2012, arriving at Ceres in Feb., 2015.

It's possible Dawn might go on to Pallas if enough
fuel remains, but I'm guessing Ceres will be more
than enough interesting that we won't want to leave.
Or Dawn could prove to have the Mars Rover "Spirit"!

RELEASE: 11-182

NASA SPACECRAFT CAPTURES VIDEO OF ASTEROID APPROACH

WASHINGTON -- Scientists working with NASA's Dawn spacecraft have
created a new video showing the giant asteroid Vesta as the
spacecraft approaches this unexplored world in the main asteroid
belt.

The video loops 20 images obtained for navigation purposes on June 1.
The images show a dark feature near Vesta's equator moving from left
to right across the field of view as Vesta rotates. Images also show
Vesta's jagged, irregular shape, hinting at the enormous crater known
to exist at Vesta's south pole.

To see the video, visit:

http://www.nasa.gov/dawn

The images were obtained by a framing camera during a 30-minute
period

and show about 30 degrees of a rotation. The pixel size in these
images is approaching the resolution of the best Hubble Space
Telescope images of Vesta.

"Like strangers in a strange land, we're looking for familiar
landmarks," said Jian-Yang Li, a Dawn participating scientist from
the University of Maryland, College Park. "The shadowy spot is one of
those - it appears to match a feature, known as 'Feature B,' from
images of Vesta taken by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope."

Before orbiting Vesta on July 16, Dawn will gently slow down to about
75 mph (120 kph). NASA is expecting to release more images on a
weekly basis, with more frequent images available once the spacecraft
begins collecting science at Vesta.

"Vesta is coming more and more into focus," said Andreas Nathues,
framing camera lead investigator, based at the Max Planck Institute
for Solar System Research, Katlenburg-Lindau, Germany. "Dawn's
framing camera is working exactly as anticipated."

The mission is managed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in
Pasadena, Calif., for the agency's Science Mission Directorate in
Washington. Dawn is a project of the directorate's Discovery Program,
managed by NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala.
UCLA is responsible for overall Dawn mission science. Orbital
Sciences Corp. of Dulles, Va., designed and built the Dawn
spacecraft. The framing cameras were developed and built under the
leadership of the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research in
Katlenburg-Lindau, Germay.

The German Aerospace Center (DLR) Institute of Planetary Research in
Berlin made significant contributions in coordination with the
Institute of Computer and Communication Network Engineering in
Braunschweig. The framing camera project is funded by the Max Planck
Society, DLR and NASA.

The video from Dawn also will air Monday afternoon on NASA
Television's Video File. For NASA TV downlink information, schedules
and links to streaming video, visit:

NASA's Curiosity Continues Mobility Checkouts
Jet Propulsion Laboratory
June 13, 2011

Spacecraft specialists at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena,
Calif., have been putting the Mars Science Laboratory rover, Curiosity,
through various tests in preparation for shipment to NASA's Kennedy
Space Center in Florida this month.

A new set of images online shows the rover maneuvering its robotic arm
and driving in JPL's Spacecraft Assembly Facility, where it was built.
The images are available at:
http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/msl/multimedia/index.html .

Assembly and testing work is on track for launch of the Mars Science
Laboratory from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Fla., during the
period from Nov. 25 to Dec. 18, 2011.

JPL, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena,
manages the mission for the NASA Science Mission Directorate,
Washington. This mission will land Curiosity on Mars in August 2012.
Researchers will use the tools on the rover to study whether the landing
region has had environmental conditions favorable for supporting
microbial life and favorable for preserving clues about whether life
existed. More information about the mission is online at:
http://marsprogram.jpl.nasa.gov/msl/ .

[meteorite-list] AD-NWA 6855 L5 IMB - Simply Shocking!

2011-06-13 Thread Gary Fujihara
Aloha,

I'd like to announce a shocking new meteorite, NWA 6855. A single 91g stone
was purchased at the Tucson Gem and Mineral show from a Moroccan dealer in
February 2011. The stone was cut to reveal its highly shocked matrix. A sample
was analyzed by Ray Pickard of the Bathurst Observatory and submitted for
classification. The stone features brecciation and shock veining along with
copious amounts of metal in blebs and rivulets. These slices were cut and
polished by Montana Meteorite Laboratory and have a mirror polish on one side,
to show off the beauty of this exceptional meteorite. All specimens come in a
quality labeled display case for protection and years of viewing pleasure,
along with a Big Kahuna Meteorites Certificate of Authenticity / ID card. Scale
cube is 1cm on each side and not included in the sale.

http://bigkahuna-meteorites.com/NWA6855.html

I will be away at the summit with limited access to email, but will respond to
emails in a chronological order when I am back on earth. Mahalo for looking
and have a great day!

[meteorite-list] Dawn Captures Video of Asteroid Vesta Approach

The images were obtained by a framing camera during a 30-minute period
and show about 30 degrees of a rotation.

Yes, I see the reference now. A bit misleading. Will see if I get any further
info out of this seller. I'm now interested in how one would prove it's shale
from that location. This meteorite was moved first by glacial transport and
again many moons later by a man trying to capitalize on its notoriety.

Yes, you read it more carefully than I did. At the end it says
"This meteorite specimen is a piece of shale collected from the
pit the Willamette meteorite was removed".

However, the opening paragraph says "Here we have for you a great
looking Willamette meteorite fragment" which seems more than
a little misleading.

I only collect nice-looking pieces anyway, so this does not tempt
