Rob, and the Responders,

Becoming One of The FaceBorn is an irrevocable
step. That's why they make you sign the I Agree

digital blood, but it's permanent. Unless you can
get the ghost of Daniel Webster to plead your case

You can check out, but you can never leave...
I bet you even think that when you die, you won't

So sad.

Hi All,

Apologies for the off-topic post. I'm trying to delete myself from the
Facebook Meteorite group because the number of messages/posts per day

to find a way to do so. Any suggestions?

[meteorite-list] meteorite display at the worlds oldest still working Planetarium

2011-06-14 Thread Rob Lenssen
Hello List,

A Dutch collector-friend asked me if I would be interested in lending out
some meteorites, for them to be displayed in the Eise Eisinga Planetarium in
Franeker (Netherlands).
The planetarium is reported to be the oldest still working Planetarium in
the world (build from 1774 to 1781).

It sounded like fun, and a nice opportunity to introduce people to the
world of meteorites, so I agreed to participate.

A photographic impression can be found at my website:
http://www.asteroidchippings.com/Special_topics/Eise_Eisinga_Planetarium_Fra
neker.html

I think even if without the meteorite display, the Planetarium is definitely
worth a visit when in the area.

Enjoy,

2011-06-14 Thread Count Deiro
Well done! Rob,

What you have done to advance the public's knowledge of meteorites by your
generous contributions of time and materials is commendable. The meteoritical
displays in that charming, historical planitarium wll now add a dimension to a
visit that the place didn't have before.

I had the pleasure of stopping for a snack in Franeker on an auto tour years
agoand missed the planetarium. I was ignorant of meteorites and the finer
details of the solar system at the time.

Thank you for sharing. You bring credit to IMCA by your membership. When the
discussion resumes about what IMCA and its members can do to advance our
pursuit what you have done will be an example.

Re: [meteorite-list] Facebook Meteorite group

2011-06-14 Thread Michael Gilmer
When Facebook changed their group layout and settings, it messed
everything up. In the past, you would not receive emails every time
someone posted to the group. The old groups were more like a message
board. The new format automatically subscribes each member to the
group feed, so it's now like being a member of a mailing list with no
option for a digest format.

You can turn off the emails by going into the group settings or you
can leave the group entirely.

Alot of group owners and members (of any group) have been upset by
this change and I don't blame them. It is rather annoying to suddenly
get dozens of emails without any warning.

I don't think so, and most university professors couldn't identify a meteorite
if it hit them on the head. Can't tell you how many times I get calls saying
but the geology professor says this is a meteorite. Looks like this one is
bogus too. But these local papers LOVE printing stories like this.

My friend has a real nice petrographic microscope for sale. It is made with

I have a similar hand held vintage scope and these you will find are superior

I think even if without the meteorite display, the Planetarium is definitely
worth a visit when in the area.

Facebook a waste of time...? Hundreds of millions of people now use
Facebook as their open-id to keep their online profiles consolidated and
allow one-click-login to a myriad of sites all over the web.

Facebook is worth billions upon billions of dollars, over 500 million
users on Facebook, companies make untold millions of dollars using
Facebook for their businesses, and it connects hundreds of millions of
people worldwide, has helped raise hundreds of millions dollars for causes
and charities worldwide. Facebook has helped educate the illiterate,
empower women, feed the hungry, house the homeless, fund scientific
research for countless technologies -medical and commercial. Facebook (and
Twitter) has helped propagate political revolutions of freedom through the
world, and allows like minded individuals all over the planet to
communicate unimpeded by the limits of human transportation, region,
culture, race, or the oppressions of government or religion. It connects,
it teaches, it learns, it's the new internet.

I would beg to differ on your opinion that Facebook is a waste of time.

Hi Greg,

Hematite IS a metal, so that's what I would expect to see in a hematite
nodule. Some will be completely oxidized (rusted) so that there is no more
visible metal left in them, but others will still have some metal in them.
Hematite is Iron and Oxygen (Fe2O3), so that's why it's attracted to a
magnet.

Hematite is often considered non-magnetic simply because its magnetism
can be imperceptible.

If it is highly magnetic, something other than the hematite is causing
it. Hematite is known to mix with darn near anything!

Hematite/Haematite is not a metal. It's a metal oxide as you go on to say.
Any free iron included within a hematite mass would be native iron and not
hematite.

[meteorite-list] Public Meteorite Collections? [WAS]: meteorite display at the worlds oldest still working Planetarium

2011-06-14 Thread Richard Kowalski
This post reminds me of a small project I have.
You may remember a year or so ago I created two files of larger public
meteorite collections, one for Google Earth and the other for those using GPS
devices or smartphones.

I plan on adding this location to the next update (thanks for pointing it out
Rob) and I have a few other minor locations that may be worth a stop and look
by those interested in meteorites.

I'm appealing to you, kind reader, to let me know of other public collections
or displays, however small, that you've come across in your travels, which you
think others might like to see. I'm also considering including other locations
of interest, such as the Wold Cottage pylon, if anyone is interested in such a
thing. Of course suggestions are always welcome.

The latest version of the file is available in two formats:

The KMZ file for Google Earth can be found at:
http://www.lpl.arizona.edu/~kowalski/meteorites/Public_Meteorite_Collections_v2.kmz

The POI file for your Garmin GPS can be found at:
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/29100

Both files have been moderately well received, but one last question to you who
have GPS units. I build my files in the Garmin GPX format. Would those of you
who don't have a Garmin, would you be interested in the file if it were
available in a different format, such as the Tom Tom OV2?

Suggestions comments should be sent to me off list.

Thanks!

I forgot to mention I am also interested in locations such as the Turkish

Since I only have a handful of recent Meteorite mags, other locations mentioned

Hello List,

If anyone is interested, I am clearing house on my eBay store and making a

del Cielo posted with a starting bid for $75. If someone from the list is
interested, I will end the auction at $75 and throw in a small crusted endcut
.12 g Camel Donga. This is a polished endcut that looks very nice, so here's a
chance to add a piece of 4 Vesta to your collection. The Campo was prepped by
myself and is an extremely nice example of this meteorite.

If anyone from here is interested in this offer, contact me at

I also have a few other items to clear out and they can all be reviewed at my

the world (build from 1774 to 1781).

It sounded like fun, and a nice opportunity to introduce people to the
world of meteorites, so I agreed to participate.

A photographic impression can be found at my website:
http://www.asteroidchippings.com/Special_topics/Eise_Eisinga_Planetarium_Fra

I think even if without the meteorite display, the Planetarium is definitely
worth a visit when in the area.

Enjoy,

[meteorite-list] AD for the Campo

2011-06-14 Thread Warren Sansoucie

Hello List.

Thanks for all of the inquiries for the Campo. It has sold. For those
interested, I will have a new batch of similar individuals that will weight
around the same or slightly larger for around the same price to fellow METlist
subscribers. I will be sure to let all of you know first when I get them in and
complete the prep work.

Thank you to everyone for their interests.

I do have some very nice black crusted slices of Camel Donga available, just
inquire warren3...@hotmail.com

Best Wishes,

Warren Sansoucie

[meteorite-list] Ensisheim last news

2011-06-14 Thread Zelimir . Gabelica

G'day List,

It all starts in less than 3 days!
Hope this info can reach some of you who live within our time zone,
believing that the othyer significant number of our overseas guests
is about to start flying...

1) The sad news came today.
For the first time, our Grand-Maître, Jean-Marie Blosser (head of
the Guardians) has to cancel
Indeed, since this morning he is in hospital for at least one week (if
all goes well). Serious problems. I'll know more tomorrow as soon as I
visited him.

Of course, nothing is cancelled and the few of us will do it for
him, for better of for worse. (For the best, of course!)

2) We had a new proposal for a lecture, an offer we could not refuse.
Two famous scientists, namely Prof. Vishnu Reddy and Dr. Lucille Le
Corre, from Germany will visit us on Friday-Saturday. They are
primarily looking for HED Fall samples that are not too weathered.
They are trying to create a spectral database of HED samples to
analyze Dawn mission data of Vesta

The exciting title of their lecture is:
Vesta,Vestoids and HEDS: Waiting for Dawn.

You may want more on the Dawn shortcoming mission ?
Here is a short summary of their talk:

Vesta is the largest differentiated asteroid that is still mostly intact
today. NASA's Dawn mission will begin a yearlong mapping mission of Vesta
in July 2011. The talk will summarize our current understanding of Vesta based
on telescopic observations, laboratory study of HED meteorites and
compositional study of Vestoids

Want to know more about the authors ?

Vishnu Reddy is a research faculty at the Department of Space Studies,
University of North Dakota, USA, and a member of the Dawn Framing Camera
team at the Max-Planck Institute for Solar System Research, Germany. His
research interests include compositional study of asteroids and
asteroid-meteorite link.

Lucille Le Corre also works at Max Planck (Solar System Research). She
is part of the team of the instrument FC (Framing Camera) Dawn of the
NASA mission. Her specific research project concerns the study of
planetary surfaces by remote sensing leading to the analyzis of their
geology and composition.

This lecture is scheduled on Saturday, 11:00

3) 4 new brothers had to get enthroned this year: Martin Horejsi
(Pocatello, UT), Fabien Kuntz (Besançon, F) and Guy Verlooven
(Malonne, B), our other lecturer.
The fourth was our friend Erich Haiderer (Graz, A) but a couple of
days ago he cancelled his coming. He anounced he can't make it as his
4x4 landcruiser, following an attempted theft, just had a huge
differential destruction.

4) I may have some tables free after the withdrawal of Erich and Luc
Labenne, while Hobein and Ismaily, who use to have their tables
permanently reserved, desperately remain silent. Current last minutes
vagaries of every show...

5) On a more pleasent note, more than 90 people from all over the
world had reserved for the dinner party.
Note that, besides the 3 menus (poultry, beef and...vegetarian), 3
brands of beer will be served: amber, white, and a special
lemmon-based, mostly appreciated by women.
For connoisseurs, besides the traditional Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir
Meteorite cold wines, 2 specific reds are proposed: Château
Vieux Charon 1ère côte de Blaye (Bordeaux,...ho Anne ?) and Calomb
Jean Gleizes (région d'Oc).

6) Weather forecast:
Thu 16th: Max T: 28°C (80 F), sunny (20% chances rain)
Fri 17th: Max T: 24°C (75 F), sunny, light rain late afternoon
Sat 18th: Max T: 23°C (73 F), cloudy, 60% chances scattered showers
Thu 19th: Max T: 22°C (72 F), sunny, 10% chances rain
Mon 20th: Max T: 27°C (78 F), sunny, 0% chances rain

7) Call for unusual or showy NWA samples for the museum display (show
theme): pieces always wanted. But write first asap with details or
write your own label.

The display is set up on Friday.

8) Concerning museum and samples.
In a neat future, the Guradians wish to extend their museum (that so
far contains one single meteorite, though a very famous one (!!)).

A coiple of new windows will soon be set and will be ready to host
many meteorite samples so as to complete a decent display.

The guardians thought that perhaps the other enthroned
brother-guardians from all around the world might help this by
providing some extra surplus meteorite samples sleeping in their
drawers and wanting to get rid of them

Medium or long term loan or donation would be highly appreciated.
Donated samples will carry their defnite acknowledged labels with the
name of the donor mentioned for centuries to come.
Not a requirement, just a persuasive suggestion... No hurries
though, just bear in mind...

That's all folks.

Cause for the next news, you all will be the players!

Still 2 (short) nights to sleep!

My ever friendly wishes to all,

Zelimir

[meteorite-list] regarding post of NWA 001 question PLUS careless IMCA member

2011-06-14 Thread Dan Furlan
O.k. Everybody, I have spoken to the IMCA member who tried selling me
the NWA 001,  after i confirmed with Adam Hupe and Dean Bessey and
several other people who know a lot about this meteorite and i knew
for certain it was practically impossible to have a half stone of
NWA 001 that weighed 16 grams i went ahead and i confronted this IMCA
member.  It turns out that he apparently misread the label and it
was not NWA 001 but that it was NWA 010.  This is the second critical
error this IMCA member has made.  The first major error was when i
ordered a .76 gram of lunar meteorite from him.  He sent me a .23 gram
piece instead of what i had paid for and i sent it back to him for a
refund.  His excuse was that his scale might of been off, but if that
is the case then why was this item listed on ebay several times and
one of the times it actually sold which means the buyer canceled the
transaction and/or returned the item.  Then his excuse changed after i
sent him several pictures of the piece weighed on different scales of
mine as i own over 6 scales and showed him the same weight of .23
grams on each scale.  His new excuse was that he had two pieces and
mailed me the wrong piece.  So then i said o.k. no problem mail me the
right piece and then he came up with another excuse stating that he is
not sure where the bigger piece is because his son took it.  So after
i mailed him back the item for a refund is when he tried to sell me
the NWA 001 instead of the refund which i became suspicious of when he
stated it was a half stone and only after did i confront him about it
did he tell me he made a mistake in reading the label.  Two critical
errors in a row made by an IMCA member makes me wonder a lot of
things.  I have recieved several emails asking about who this person
is and it seems that all the people who are emailing already suspected
somebody and they all suspect the same person.  I do not want to give
his name in a public format because i do not want to cause any
problems for this person and maybe both times his mistake were honest
mistakes.  I have been selling and buying meteorite and meteorite
related material for many years and I have never made such critical
errors let alone twice in a row I have always been honest and double
check everything i sell to make sure problems like this don't happen.
I feel this member has behaved very carelessly and even if these
mistakes where of an honest nature i think i never want to deal with
them again.  I am sorry that this experience has made me question the
validity of IMCA logo's and i will be extra careful in the future when
buying anything from anybody i don't know whether they are an IMCA
member or not, one of the best dealers i know isn't an IMCA member and
i never had any problems with him... I hope nobody has to go through
the same experience i am going through right now just because somebody
doesn't pay close attention to what they are doing when conducting
business.  Like i said there is a small chance that fraud was involved
but even if these were honest mistakes they are unacceptable according
to my standards and the way i do business.  Rest assured anybody out
there who deals with me i would never make such mistakes and I always
take the up-most care to ensure that what you buy from me is as
described and authentic and i double check everything before i ship it
out and i think everybody who deals with meteorites should do the same
thing.

working Planetarium

Hello List,

A Dutch collector-friend asked me if I would be interested in lending out
some meteorites, for them to be displayed in the Eise Eisinga Planetarium
in

Franeker (Netherlands).
The planetarium is reported to be the oldest still working Planetarium in
the world (build from 1774 to 1781).

It sounded like fun, and a nice opportunity to introduce people to the
world of meteorites, so I agreed to participate.

A photographic impression can be found at my website:

I think even if without the meteorite display, the Planetarium is
definitely

worth a visit when in the area.

Enjoy,

I haven't read it, but it has been on my wish list at Amazon for a long time,
and every time I've noticed it, there have been hardback copies for 1 cent. I'd
say give it a try, since you can get it for essentially only the cost of
shipping.
