Re: [meteorite-list] [3] West Virginia / Maryland Event
Doug, I'm in Europe now and missed this. There were a few reports from ontario so this may have been caught on the uwo fireball network. Heres a map of the ams reports: http://www.amsmeteors.org/fireball2/ams-event-map2.php?year=2011&event_id=1126 Try contacting uwo and see if they caught it. Re: [meteorite-list] [3] West Virginia / Maryland Event
(Oct 4 Event) According to Allegany County 9-1-1 officials at about 4:30 this morning folks throughout Western Maryland awoke to a sonic boom created by a meteorite that moved through the area. 12 calls were made to Allegany County 9-1-1 beginning at about 4:22 am from Frostburg to Oldtown. Callers reported hearing a loud boom and seeing a blue or green light flashing through the sky. County 9-1-1 officials from around West Virginia claimed they received calls about feeling the sonic boom from Carpendale, Capn Bridge and Wardensville. Early reports are that the meteorite may have allegedly crashed somewhere in Virginia. But Virginia Emergency Management officials say they have had no meteorite reports. NASA officials have been unable to confirm the reports at this point. -Original Message- From: MexicoDoug To: meteorite-list Sent: Sat, Oct 8, 2011 2:05 am Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] West Virginia / Maryland Event Check the line going North-east from around Petersburg WV to Chaneysville PA ... G'Day Mike and List, Way back when I way traveling I went through a few situations. Having a gun held to my head in Muscat, Oman, being held in East Germany before the wall came down, Mexican jail, etc. I now play it safe. The world is not what it used to be. The days of the Gung-ho Traveler have gone, but, maybe your trying to rejuvenate it.:-) I suppose the term that we loosely used is actually becoming fact. Meteorite madness. I'm glad to see that your home and safe and yes you should consider a book or maybe a reality show. Meteorite Farmer Adventures. Mike F wrote: "Should have known this was a disaster, but overconfident." That doesn't sound like overconfidence to me, more like meteorite fever. Just glad you got out with your skin and didn't get your face bashed in. We're all in this together, too bad you didn't have a buddy along this time but that's easy to say now, isn't it... Great job under the circumstances and lucky someone up there was looking out for you too. There must be some deep psychological reason for responses like this. Reminds me of the time I jumped off a waterfall after stupidly climbing it for absolutely no good reason except the burning desire to show I could, and did. Smitten, then the light bulb went off that just 'cause you can climb up high somewhere doesn't mean you can do it in reverse safely when currents are flying all around and rocks slick and mossy. First I started shaking, and then reality became distorted and me totally calm and calculating and if I was a paranormal type I'd say like an out of the body objective experience. You can do your best, but then there's that moment that you have to jump and pray you don't fall on any of the mostly boulders in the water below. Some people panic themselves to death, while others do this. Then, the moment that you're falling and wondering why you do some of the things you do that stays with you for a long time after. That same moment Mike described as: "Oddly it seemed like time was standing still, all this activity around me." Mike, that's not odd at all, it only confirms the authenticity of your story. A friend in Mexico who was forced to play Russian Roulette described the identical feeling to me when chance kindly determined his fate. Welcome back. My wife and I have arrived safely at home after nearly 40 hours of travel. It was a terrifying and very real experience, one I do not wish to repeat. I am sure they were about to kill me, they acted in every way that suggest they were planning to kill us and seem to have decided at last minute to just flee. I kept telling the to relax, take the money, they were all yelling in English and Swahili for me to give them the dollars. I kept telling them I had Kenyan shillings only. I had about $2500 cash me, they ripped my clothes apart and ransacked the car. They took my phones American and Kenyan, wallet, passport, backpack with meteorite, camera etc, even took my Teva sandals off my feet, one man had the gun at my head the other the machete at my throat the entire time so I could not move. One kept screaming at them to "kill him, finish it";. I must have been more calm than at any other time in my life and you all know I am not a calm person. Oddly it seemed like time was standing still, all this activity around me and yelling and I just kept telling them to relax, take the money and let us go. Suddenly all of them got in the car, me and 3 in the back and two in the front and they moved the car into the woods, brush. I was then realizing that they were likely going to kill us, why move the car after you get all the stuff? Then one guy said again to kill me and the other said no. He then threw me my passport and wallet empty of cash of course, and said "no documents" then ask me if I could drive. I said yes and he told me to drive. I tried to get out but one hit me in the head with something and told me not to get out but to go over the seats, I was then panicking and struggling to get to the front of the car, but somehow got the car started and they all ran. I drove very fast down very bad dirt trail with my two guys in the trunk screaming, after maybe a mile or so I stopped and let them out. We rushed to the Thika main police station and reported the robbery. It was foolish to go into the bush and I nearly paid with my life this time, they planned the attack for days communicating with my driver. The police are pulling all his call records so should be able to catch them. They took a lot of expensive things like my Tag Heur watch, Sony camera, I phone etc, all can be found as no one there has money for such things. Sentence for violent armed robbery here is mandatory life in prison, which the police told me would be lucky to pass 10 years before dying. [meteorite-list] Mars Impact Bench - On Beyond Erosion
Ron Baalke -- Your posts are among the reasons I enjoy this group so much! THANKS!! I was immediately fascinated by your first image (link below) and mused on the colossal forces that created a Mars impact crater 6 miles across. And that bench -- hmmm...here's a layman's take...and I invite being corrected by the group, whose passions and professions deal with these spectacular studies. On our way to Ruben's famous Holbrook Hunt we again stopped at Arizona's amazing Meteor Crater and I recall driving up over a similar "bench". Not as well developed or as obvious...and I know conditions, events and timelines were very different on the two planets, but if you relate Earth's best preserved and first proven meteor crater to the Mars crater, I am nagged by the notion that the Mars bench was a by-product of much more than erosion. The explanation I was given at the crater for that "embryonic" bench on Earth was that the heavier/more consolidated bedrock was lifted in what I'll call "splash" forces and turned upside down. Thus the layered strata was inverted...creating what must be an artifact of many impacts - the oldest and harder crusty stuff is on top on the crater rim...and our impact is geologically youthful - less that 50K years old, so solid rock erosion can't be a big factor here...but do you agree we have the makings of a bench? Earth --- Meteor Crater Slide Show: http://www.meteorcrater.com/Photo-Gallery Mars --- Ron's Link - Crater with Surrounding Bench in Sinus Meridiani: http://hirise.lpl.arizona.edu/ESP_023382_1845 On Mars, the impact seems to have given rise to a similar geology as the ancient hard-top sandstone pinnacles of Monument Valley -- good old Earth-logical erosion would add to the severity of the Mars bench over time...but only after a really good boost, eh? What a sight that would be! To see the mixture of extreme forces at the center of an impact act together to pry up the crust (possibly even set some on edge); massive quakes and hot, explosive winds would maybe sift by weight (like in a gold pan), melt solid rock (leaving an edge that didn't melt) and there might even be a draining back into the crater of melted or granulated stone (leaving a visible rim like high-tide at the beach). And I'm probably missing other integral forces that would help create a bench "on beyond erosion".
