[meteorite-list] Cruising to Mars, Curiosity Awaits Final Software Load

2011-11-29 Thread Ron Baalke

http://www.spaceflightnow.com/atlas/av028/28cruise/

Cruising to Mars, Curiosity awaits final software load
BY STEPHEN CLARK
SPACEFLIGHT NOW
November 28, 2011

Saturday's launch of the Curiosity rover was just the prologue of the
$2.5 billion mission, and officials will spend the next eight months
readying for the craft's untried descent to the surface of Mars.

The rover soared into space at 10:02 a.m. EST (1502 GMT) Saturday on top
of an Atlas 5 rocket. Its mission at Mars will be to detect organic
molecules, the building blocks of life, and determine if the planet
could have ever harbored life, past or present.

Forty-four minutes later, the probe separated from the Atlas rocket's
Centaur upper stage on a trajectory to escape Earth. Officials reported
the craft was in good health.

We all recognize this is the prologue for the mission, necessary but
not sufficient, said Peter Theisinger, project manager for the Mars
Science Laboratory. We all have our work cut out for us over the next
eight-and-a-half months to prepare for the surface mission and do the
final 'I-dotting' and 'T-crossing' for [entry, descent and landing].

All the hardware necessary for the make-or-break landing went up
Saturday, but software engineers are still writing and testing
programming for Curiosity's arrival at Mars and its two-year mission on
the surface.

After entering the Martian atmosphere shielded by an ablative
carbon-based thermal protection system, Curiosity will deploy a
parachute, jettison its heat shield and will be lowered to the surface
hanging on nylong tethers underneath a rocket pack.

Six course correction thruster firings are planned through Aug. 6, 2012,
when Curiosity will reach Mars.

Controllers will uplink the final version of Curiosity's landing
software in May, followed in June by the transmission of software for
the rover's surface operations, according to Theisinger.

The rover already has software to do individual tasks, Theisinger
said. What we're adding is a level of efficiency so we can tell it to
do something and then it can execute a whole block of activities in one
go.

The in-flight delivery of software is not unusual for NASA's Mars
missions. Theisinger, who led development of the Spirit and Opportunity
rovers, said controllers uplinked operations software to those vehicles
as they cruised to the Red Planet.

Opportunity has received subsequent software upgrades since its 2004
landing, allowing the robot more autonomy and independence on drives and
scientific investigations.

NASA ordered the Curiosity team to concentrate its efforts on preparing
the spacecraft for launch this year. The rover had three weeks to blast
off to reach Mars in 2012, or else wait another two years.

With the rover safely on its way to Mars, engineers have little time to
breathe easy.

As soon as we launch, we will start what call robustness testing, where
we actually try to break the software, said Doug McCuistion, head of
NASA's Mars exploration program. We've tested the hardware enough where
we know the hardware works. The software ties it all together. We're
going to try to break it. We're going to, at a minimum, test the corners
of the envelope of where its performance limits are.

A series of week-long simulations are also planned to prepare the
Curiosity operations team for what's to come.

Linking a mock-up of the rover with the science team and control room,
officials will test command sequences, check software and verify other
procedures.

In these simulations, the science team gets to practice, for example,
how you would do triage the amount of data that's available, the amount
of power that's available and the mount of time that's available,
basically the three fundamental resources that allow us to do the
science experiments, said John Grotzinger, MSL's project scientist.

Scientists plan 10 of the simulations, called operational readiness
tests, on the voyage to Mars.

[meteorite-list] INAA Testing thoughts

2011-11-29 Thread Jim Wooddell

Hi all!

I was wondering what folks think of INAA testing of meteorites???

As I read up on such testing, many questions come to mind. The main
questions is this;
Does INAA testing truly give an accurate representation of a meteorite, when
the test samples are so small?
In other words, if you have a 50 gram specimen, the test sample will only be
something in the order of 0.1 to 0.5g.
Knowing that and looking at the make up of irons, I tend to think that much
could and would be missed.

Appreciate your thoughts!

Jim

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite?

2011-11-29 Thread MexicoDoug
Looks like this has been commented on a bit and confirmed as a -
meteorwrong - and apparently streaked reddish since it is commented
that a streak test indicated it was probably hematite. (The color
isn't mentioned, only that the streak proved it was hematite was
mentioned.)

just one comment, it would be nice to have these threads in the forum
since having to sign up on another site if the thread is started there
twists up the thread ...

here are the interior pictures:

http://www.meteoritejunction.com/download/file.php?id=1121

http://www.meteoritejunction.com/download/file.php?id=1122

Also, this stone is stranger in my opinion than that.

The OP mentions it has a density of around 3.1 g/cc and says that
hematite has a density of about 2.7 g/cc, and accounts for the higher
density being caused by metal flakes distributed throughout the matrix.
Hematite is muich heavier than 2.7 g/cc, after all in broad terms, 40%
of its chemical formula is iron so one, ignoring the packing, could
guestimate the minimum density of hematite at 0.4*(8 g/cc) = 3.2 g/cc,
but given that the oxide has some weight, hematite ought to have a
density of between 4-6 g/cc (and they are around 5.2 g/cc for both
magnetite and hematite, depending on how it 'settles' together).
Probably the 2.7 g/cc referred to was for quartz terrestrial rocks, not
oxides of iron.

In any case, I wonder if anyone else has experience with metal flakes
in hematite. Hematite one of the most highly oxidized forms of iron
right up there, more than goethite, and what can result when magnetite
oxidizes further. I makes me wonder how you could have metal flakes
survive in a hematite matrix (I don't think this can happen but really
would like to know if anyone has seen this, for all I know there is a
common process that can produce this, though I can't imagine what it
would be unless someone mixed up a batch specially to do it).

Hi Mike and thanks for your opinion. I seem to see some tiny vesicles
but can't be sure; also we can't assume it's metal that's sparkling and
my thoughts are at a density of 3.2 g/mL it is possibly some sort of
basalt. Anyway, it's a very interesting meteorwrong, (assuming it's a
wrong from the streak test which may be at odds with it being basalt
...). Wonder what Randy would think about it; the rock was found in
the midwest not too far from him. It'd be a good one for his great
site. Probably can strike it down as a meteorite by thinking about the
two tone concentric heart it has with dendrites coming out (second
picture). Still puzzled...

Hi Doug and List,

Except for the grain size, it reminds me of some acapulcoites,
visually speaking. And if not for the metal flakes, it reminds me of
a very finely grained angrite.

Also, this stone is stranger in my opinion than that.

The OP mentions it has a density of around 3.1 g/cc and says that
hematite has a density of about 2.7 g/cc, and accounts for the higher
density being caused by metal flakes distributed throughout the

matrix.
Hematite is muich heavier than 2.7 g/cc, after all in broad terms,

40%

of its chemical formula is iron so one, ignoring the packing, could
guestimate the minimum density of hematite at 0.4*(8 g/cc) = 3.2 g/cc,
but given that the oxide has some weight, hematite ought to have a
density of between 4-6 g/cc (and they are around 5.2 g/cc for both
magnetite and hematite, depending on how it 'settles' together).
Probably the 2.7 g/cc referred to was for quartz terrestrial rocks,

not

oxides of iron.

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite?

2011-11-29 Thread Galactic Stone Ironworks
Hi Doug,

What is the average density of angrites? I know acapulcoites are much
more dense than this specimens, but angrites tend to be a little less
dense if I recall correctly. I don't remember the exact number though
and can't find it readily.

I've seen a few bizarre wrongs in my time. I also had a black
unclassified stone that was almost definitely a meteorite, but had a
similar-looking matrix - very black with metal flecks. It also had a
black exterior - desert varnished and wind polished, but you could
tell the original coloration of the entire stone was black (not just
the crust). I sliced that one up and sold it, and now I wish I had
kept it for classification.

I have a few wrongs right now that are dead-ringers for wind-polished
H-type chondrites, but they have no metal in the matrix, the density
is wrong, and they bleed red when cut - likely hematite.

Do you have a link to an exterior shot of the wrong you posted, or did
I overlook it?

Best regards,

MikeG

Re: [meteorite-list] Meteorite?

2011-11-29 Thread MexicoDoug

Hi Mike,

This is the old Vatican bible
( http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/bible definition #4 )
of densities of meteorites:

http://adsabs.harvard.edu/abs/1998M%26PS...33.1231C

plus, the new one which had two angrites:

http://www.lpi.usra.edu/meetings/lpsc2010/pdf/1869.pdf

...and indicates a density of 3.2 g/mL for angrites which you'll like
but I don't have a clue with what accuracy tyhe density of the unknown
was measured.

As for the outside of the rock, it was in the tread referenced in the
other forum, but here's the image direct link:

http://www.meteoritejunction.com/download/file.php?id=1119

which has curious rust-colored spots but still looks basaltish to me.

Very curious, the object

Kindest wishes
