2012-05-13 Thread Shawn Alan
Now thats some proof :) and a hammer stone I think would turn heads from the
Sutter's Mill HAMMER STONE FALL. I bet when its said and done, there will
be more of stones found on top of builds and roofs within the area the
meteorite fell because of it fragmenting in the atmosphere, only time will
tell. But for those of you that collect hammer stones or meteorite from HAMMER
STONE FALLS the Sylacauge I would say is the king of all HAMMER STONE FALLS
just for the fact two stone came from that fall, making one a hammer stone as
apposed to Sutter's Mill HAMMER STONE FALL were there has been over 60
individual stones and fragments found so far and more being documented. So in a
since the probability of a hammer stone will be alot higher than from Sylacauge
HAMMER STONE FALL.

List

There is another hammer stone but the owner   and her husband have not gone
public yet.  They will next week when she gets back home. This one embedded
itself on her shed and she has the mark to prove it. I will have them contact
Michael Gilmer and Peter J.

2012-05-13 Thread Richard Montgomery
Congrats to Robert! Having spent (still) many many days with my head down
and alert, countless hours and optimism in every condition and restricted
search ground (and non-restricted with permission from property owners) I'm
struck by the not-coincidental success that a number of experienced hunters
who have come to the strewn field have had. Look at the number of stones,
and many have been found by devotees.

Looking at the list of finds and finders, and having seen thousands of
people looking (some kid's parents and the parents themselves had horse-shoe
magnets suspended by strings as they walked along), it is amazing that
Robert's persistence turns up more that a single stoneA BIG amazing
congratulations.

Hi Jim,

In the article of your first link, you'll find the
following confusing sentence:

"It was then he learned that not only did he find the largest
piece to date, but that his find has been identified as the
main mass of the meteor."

I guess the writer wasn't clear on what was meant by "main
mass". For a fresh fall, the so-called "main mass" may
be changing on a daily basis. In the case of Sutter's Mill,
where over 99% of its meteorites will never be found, the
actual main mass of the fall is unlikely to be among the 1%.

Very amusing that someone found gold while looking for
meteorites! (I do wonder about the use of a metal detector
to find a CM meteorite -- has a single Sutter's Mill
meteorite been found using one?)

Re: [meteorite-list] Vesta & HED's

2012-05-13 Thread barrat
It is true that a few eucritic rocks are ungrouped. Ibitira is one example. It
is not surprising that basalts were erupted on a few distinct small bodies, 4.5
Ga ago...

But all the diogenites display the same D17O as the (regular) eucrites, and no
ungrouped diogenite has been identified at present. The fact that Vesta exhibits
diogenites AND eucrites is a strong argument for a link between HED and Vesta.

[meteorite-list] AD - Mifflin Fully-Crusted "Pea"

2012-05-13 Thread fallingfusion
Good Morning, and a Happy Mothers Day...

I'll make this one quick: If there is anyone in need of an elusive Mifflin
Individual stone - I have a very nice (and very fresh) "pea" / "pebble"
available. It is fully crusted, and it one of two 7.7g (..talk about lucky No.
7's) stones that was found by the great hunter, Mike Miller. Priced at $775
shipped, photos can be emailed upon request. Paypal and/or Payment Plans are
available.

Thank you...

Ryan

Re: [meteorite-list] Vesta & HED's

2012-05-13 Thread MstrEman
Keep in mind that there are now some non-Vesta originating eucrites
identified. So the pass state of knowledge holding that all HEDs were
from Vesta should be qualified with a caveat that "Most all eucrites
are from Vesta" or "with rare exception..." or "all most all..."

Re: [meteorite-list] Vesta & HED's

2012-05-13 Thread Benjamin P. Sun
Yes, but aren't the relatively few non-Vesta eucrites classified as
ungrouped achondrites or anomalous eucrites?(if not then they should
be)
So I would like to think that there is already the notion that there
may be a few rare exceptions.
