[meteorite-list] Ad: Glover's Bluff Fallback Breccia for Sale!!
Hello Everyone, Background: Some 500 million years ago, a large meteorite, asteroid, or comet plunged to Earth, north of Madison, Wisconsin. The impact shattered and melted tons of area rocks, excavating a large crater. A mixture of rock, dust and glass fell back into and around the crater, forming layers thousands of meters deep, which in time has became cemented together and hardened into a polymict fallback breccia. I recently made a trip to the Glover Bluff impact crater in Wisonsin and collected several beautiful pieces of fallback breccia in both the white/yellow variety and the brick red type. I have rough sizes ranging from 1g- 50kg+ with slices and endcuts available soon. If interested please contact me off list and specify your preference for size and I will send you pictures. This is some really beautiful material and something that should be present in all collections!! I will be adding all my samples to a Picasa account over the next couple weeks as well so stay tuned! http://mars.jpl.nasa.gov/msl/news/whatsnew/index.cfm?FuseAction=ShowNewsNewsID=1349 More Meters in Curiosity's Rearview Mirror Jet Propulsion Laboratory September 17, 2012 Sol 39 through 41 (Sept. 14 - 17) were driving days for the Curiosity rover. On Sol 39, Curiosity logged 72 feet (22 meters) driven. On Sol 40, the rover drove another 121 feet (37 meters). On Sol 41, Curiosity logged 89 feet (27 meters), across the surface of Gale Crater. During this sol, for the first time, the DAN instrument was incorporated into the rover's drive sequence. After driving 33 feet (10 meters), the rover would stop and the DAN instrument would activate for two minutes. Another 10 meters driven, another DAN measurement. Total distance racked up since landing on Aug. 5 is 745 feet (227 meters). An image of the surface of Gale Crater, taken on Sol 41 by the rover's left navigation camera, is available at: http://1.usa.gov/PLqFge . Curiosity continues to be in good health. Sol 41, in Mars local mean solar time at Gale Crater, ended at 10:33 a.m. Sept. 17, PDT. __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list
[meteorite-list] Mars Rover Opportunity Update: September 6-12, 2012
http://marsrovers.jpl.nasa.gov/mission/status.html#opportunity OPPORTUNITY UPDATE: Robotic Arm Goes To Work - sols 3064-3070, Sept. 6, 2012-Sept. 12, 2012: Opportunity is continuing the in-situ (contact) science campaign at a putative location of clay minerals at the inboard edge of Cape York on the rim of Endeavour Crater. On Sol 3064 (Sept. 6, 2012), the rover collected a Microscopic Imager (MI) mosaic of the target outcrop Kirkwood, followed by the placement of the Alpha Particle X-ray Spectrometer (APXS) for integration. On Sol 3066 (Sept. 8, 2012), the rover experienced an X-band fault as Earth was below the deck of the rover. Due to seasonal geometry, time of day and rover tilt, there was a known risk that Earth might be too low on the horizon for the high-gain antenna to track. A small error in the rover's tilt knowledge resulted in the track of the Earth dropping too low at the end of the X-band pass. The rover sequences transmitted during that pass were successfully received by the rover and executed as planned. The X-band fault was cleared by real-time commands sent later on Sol 3069 (Sept. 11, 2012). On Sol 3066 (Sept. 8, 2012), Opportunity raised her robotic arm for a clear camera shot of the targets in front of the rover. Then on the next sol, the rover performed a brushing with the Rock Abrasion Tool (RAT). This was followed with another MI mosaic and then the placement of the APXS on the brushed surface. On Sol 3070 (Sept. 12, 2012), the rover then performed a 3-sided drive around the exposed fin-like outcrop to reach light-toned blocky outcrop for further in-situ investigation for putative clay minerals. As of Sol 3070 (Sept. 12, 2012), the solar array energy production was 569 watt-hours with an atmospheric opacity (Tau) of 0.689 and a solar array dust factor of 0.672. Total odometry is 21.78 miles (35,047.47 meters). __ Visit the Archives at http://www.meteoritecentral.com/mailing-list-archives.html Meteorite-list mailing list Meteorite-list@meteoritecentral.com http://six.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

Re: [meteorite-list] article - impact diamonds, Popigai Crater, Russia
Hi Frank and List, From the description in the article, the diamonds sound like carbonado types. The De Beers cartel has nothing to worry about, because that kind of diamond is not going to be in high demand on jewelry and wedding rings. However, this could radically alter the industrial diamond market. I've owned some larger carbonados and examined them under magnifications up to 1200x. They are very strange and unlike anything I have ever seen. Looking at smaller broken pieces under the same magnifications reveals an alien landscape of crevasses and jagged crystalline peaks and valleys. I don't have a polarizing setup, so I don't know what a thin section would look like. 2 questions : Has anyone ever made a thin section from such diamonds? And if so, can someone post a photo of the view in cross-polarized light?
